Julianos (Tarot Card)
Julianos says: Know the truth. Observe the law. When in doubt, seek wisdom from the wise.Ten Commands: Nine Divines

Julianos, Aedric God of Wisdom and Logic, is one of the Cyrodilic Divines, governing the realms of literature, law, history, and contradiction. He is usually associated with magic, and thus is often revered by wizards. Jhunal, the Nordic father of language and mathematics, fell out of favor in the Nordic pantheon, after which he became Julianos of the Divines. Monastic orders founded by Tiber Septim and dedicated to Julianos are the keepers of the Elder Scrolls.[1][2] He is particularly venerated among many Imperials and Bretons,[3] but he also sees worship among the Forebear Redguards.[4] As a Divine, he represents the virtue of learning, scholarship, and justice. His domains include sorcery, alchemy and enchantment.[1] He is said to "incant the Damned Equation".[5] His symbol is a triangle.

Worship[edit]

Imperial depiction of Julianos

Julianos created the Shield of the Crusader for Pelinal Whitestrake, to help him defeat Umaril the Unfeathered.[6] A chapel is dedicated to his worship in Skingrad.[7] There is also a Chantry of Julianos in the Imperial City.[8]

The ancient Nords worshipped Jhunal, who was associated with the totem of the Owl.[9][10] Alessia fused the Nordic and Elven Pantheons together for her new empire, creating the aspect of Julianos.[11] While certain aspects of the Alessian reforms remain controversial in some parts of Skyrim, there is little controversy regarding the role of Julianos.[citation needed]

In the Iliac Bay, temples dedicated to him are known as Schools of Julianos.[12] As their name implies, these temples are considered educational institutions.[13][14] They are believed to have spread the term "magicka" to describe the "power associated with performing magic".[15] Julianos is the patron deity of the regions of Lainlyn, Daenia, Abibon-Gora, Dwynnen, Tulune and Satakalaam.[16]

After imperialization and the loss of independence, some Reachmen embraced the worship of the Eight Divines, including Julianos, believing that certain aspects of their traditional practices were best left in the past.[17][18][19]

Planet[edit]

The planet Julianos, sometimes called JHUNAL, is one of the Dominion Planets in the skies of Mundus, and according to the Warrior-Poet, Vivec, is one of the eight worlds known to the Dwemer. Julianos marks the eye of the Mage constellation. Stendarr is Julianos' satellite and is orbiting around it. As with all astral bodies bodies seen in the skies above Nirn and their corresponding deities, the planet Julianos is believed to be the plane of the god Julianos as well as the god himself, as seen from the mortal plane. It is said to actually be a different plane of existence in its own right, infinite in size and mass, with its appearance as a sphere being only a visual phenomenon caused by mortal mental stress.

Notes[edit]

  • The wine "Julianos Firebelly" can be made with Sacred Lotus Seeds and Lady's Smock Leaves.[20]
  • Grateful mentor idols are carved by followers of Julianos to show their respect to the teacher that made the biggest impression on the student.[21]
  • Those who visit the Wayshrines of Julianos in Cyrodiil receive blessings enhancing their intelligence and magicka.[22]
  • Julianos is named after Julian Lefay. Ted Peterson, who is the namesake of Sheogorath, explained that Julian was the more "logical" of the two of them and "always in his own head", while Peterson was the one coming up with crazy ideas..[UOL 1][UOL 2]
