Lore:Hushed
Contents
The Hushed are the remnants of mortals who have been consumed by Daedric knowledge in the realm of Apocrypha.[1] The realm is haunted by the ghosts of mortals forever searching for knowledge.[2] Most Hushed ignore mortals who encounter them. Hermaeus Mora uses these creatures to guard locations he wishes to keep private,[3] such as the Infinite Panopticon, where they wander the halls as guardians of sorts.[4][5] It is advised to not interfere with the Hushed as they attend their duties, and that they may turn on unsuspecting mortals with no warning at all.[3]
Mora resides "everywhere and nowhere" but takes glee in tormenting mortals from his realm in Oblivion. Apocrypha is "incomprehensible" to mortals who have been lured into its unseen and unspeakable depths. It is said that this is partially because laws of the mortal world hold no power in Apocrypha.[6] Most mortals who gain access to the secrets within Apocrypha are driven insane by unending revelations.[2] However, those who successfully journey through Apocrypha are known to discover powerful knowledge.[6]
Creation[edit]
Mortals who come to Apocrypha, hoping to learn forbidden knowledge unintended for them, risk their very minds in doing so. When a mortal learns a secret too great for their intellect to contain, the mind's contents are displaced. All memories, ambitions, and desires they had in their life before Apocrypha are gradually lost, and only the thirst to know more drives the mortal to delve deeper into forbidden knowledge. They cast aside their very self in the pursuit of more secrets, in a phenomenon known as the Hush, and those who succumb to it are known as the Hushed.[1]
