Mehrunes Dagon

Mehrunes Dagon is the Daedric Prince of Destruction, Revolution, and Ambition. He rules over the Oblivion realm of the Deadlands.

High Kinlady Estre is a vassal of his, and offers up her soul to him following the Veiled Heritance's repeated defeats, in exchange for Daedric reinforcements. Under his command, she has desecrated Torinaan, pillaged Dawnbreak, and led an invasion of Firsthold, where she is defeated in The Refuge of Dread of the Deadlands.

A cult of his worshipers led by Razor Master Erthas led an attack on the settlement of Whisper Grove, where it has now become the City of Ash. Following Erthras' death, he puts an end to the invasion in exchange for Gilraen, who becomes the wielder of the Mehrunes Razor. Her husband Fingaenion later hires the Undaunted to travel into the Knives of Discord region of the Deadlands in City of Ash II.

He later appears as the overarching primary antagonist of the Gates of Oblivion story arc.

An aspect of Mehrunes Dagon communes with the Veiled Queen

High Kinlady Estre will appear in a vision inside Torinaan, where you may witness the scene where she makes a pact with Mehrunes Dagon:

High Kinlady Estre: "Lord Dagon, my family has been ever faithful. Now, in my hour of need, I request your aid."
Lord Dagon: "Your plot's exposed. Your supporters, crushed. And you come crawling to your Lord. What do you have left to offer me?"
High Kinlady Estre: "Anything! Everything! I offer my very soul if it means I have power! The power to rule."
Lord Dagon: "So be it. I imbue you with a taste of my true power. Corrupt the shrines in Torinaan. Then, move on to Firsthold…"

Razor's Edge[edit]

After you complete the quest, Mehrunes Dagon speaks to Gilraen:

Mehrunes Dagon: "I'm beside myself. You truly believe you've won. I didn't expect your little friends there could kill Erthas. But I stand corrected. All this trouble because of one Bosmeri woman. You are Gilraen, of the Whisper Grove, are you not?"
Gilraen: "I am.
Gilraen: Are you … Mehrunes Dagon?"
Mehrunes Dagon: "It was you who rallied this peasant village to contend with me. Fascinating that a mortal could be so troublesome.
Mehrunes Dagon: "I need a replacement for your Erthas. Come. Meet with me, and I will close this Oblivion gate, spare your people."
Gilraen: "I think … I think I have little choice. Tell the others to get as far away from here as they can."

She runs into the gate, and it closes behind her.

Blackwood Prologue[edit]

The Emperor's Secret[edit]

While on the trail for information on Emperor Leovic and his "Four Ambitions", you will be sent to an Imperial Cache Annex hidden in the Imperial City's sewers. Further in the annex, you will find ritual notes showing that Doombringer Eshil is there performing a ritual to commune with Mehrunes Dagon. As you approach the Shrine of Dagon, you can overhear a conversation between the Doombringer and the Daedric Prince.

Doombringer Eshil: "Mehrunes Dagon, show me where to find your Four Ambitions!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "Step through the portal and prove your worth to the lord of fire and flood!"
Doombringer Eshil: "To walk upon the sacred sands of the Deadlands? You honor me, Lord Dagon!"
Eveli Sharp-Arrow: "That cracked acorn is stepping into Oblivion?"
Eveli Sharp-Arrow: "Look, behind the statue! A portal! Come on!"

Following him through the portal, you will find yourself in part of the Deadlands. While making your way to the center of the area, you can overhear parts of the conversation between Dagon and Eshil.

Mehrunes Dagon: "I gave the mortals everything they requested, and yet we come to this."
Doombringer Eshil: "Your acolyte, the leader of our order. He sent me to find the Four Ambitions, Lord Dagon."

Continuing down the path, you hear more:

Doombringer Eshil: "The leader of the Waking Flame sent me to finish what the Black Drake started."
Mehrunes Dagon: "I have invested a significant amount of effort into the Four Ambitions."
Mehrunes Dagon: "And yet the Ambitions have been misplaced and the bargain struck remains unfulfilled."
Doombringer Eshil: "Then command me, Lord Dagon! I shall do whatever you ask!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "You want my Ambitions? Then prove your worth and destroy the intruders!"

After you have defeated Doombringer Eshil and the titan Qrazgoth, Mehrunes Dagon will speak to you through his statue:

<A portal is formed in front of the statue.>
Mehrunes Dagon: "You bested my follower, mortals, so I shall permit you to leave my realm with your lives. Step through the portal and begone!"

A Battle of Silk and Flame[edit]

In Doomvault Porcixid, you will find Dagon's forces and Mephala's Spiderkith fighting over daedric device which is installed deep within the vault. At the behest Khud af-Hadajja, you need to find and destory it so neither side gets it. When you do destroy it, you will hear Dagon's voice, and he is furious with you:

Mehrunes Dagon: "Argh! You will pay a high price for this insult, mortal!"

Escape the Doomvault and complete the quest.

Weapons of Destruction[edit]

An inevitable future

While helping Destron and Calia with their vision quest in The Ashen Forest. When they reach the Obelisk of Inevitability, a portal will appear which leads you to the White Gold Tower Throne Room. The Ruby Throne and surroundings will be rubble as Emperor Vandacia waits for you to approach him, Mehrunes Dagon can be seen smiling happily down at the scene through a hole in the wall.

Speaking with Vandacia, he explains that this is the inevitable future—you faced him and lost, while he won and brought Dagon to Nirn.

Pyre of Ambition[edit]

After your trip to the Deadlands, you will learn from Governor Keshu that the Waking Flame forces have been gathering outside Gideon. Keshu will have a plan to move the Ambitions to the more defensible Fort Redmane, so they can both protect the Ambitions and prevent the city from being caught in the battle. After you have gathered your allies and reached the Redmane, the Waking Flame attack will soon begin. You will have to find and protect the Ambitions as they fight their way through the inner bailey. Everything will be going well until you encounter Vandacia.

The high priest will be calmly standing on the battlement, and addresses Sombren:

Councilor Vandacia: "Sombren, you're only delaying the inevitable."
Sombren: "Monster! Because of you, our parents are dead!"
Councilor Vandacia: "They were the chosen of Mehrunes Dagon, rewarded beyond their station."
<Destron walks out in front on the group.>
Destron: "I'm going to kill you, Vandacia!"
Calia: "Destron, no!"
Councilor Vandacia: "Who shall I sacrifice first? Perhaps the sister …?"
Destron: "You leave Calia alone, you bastard!"
<Destron throws a lightning bolt at Vandacia who is unphased. Vandacia's red magic grips Destron and he is pulled helplessly towards Vandacia.>
Calia: "Destron!"
Councilor Vandacia: "You are an Ambition, boy. Let me help you fulfill your purpose!"
<Destron then bursts into red energy as a beam of light surrounds Vandacia. Calia falls to her knees.>
Calia: "No!"
Councilor Vandacia: "Lord Dagon, I return to you the power of this Ambition! Let the realms merge so you may walk among us!"
<The light intensifies until Mehrunes Dagon appears towering over the fort. The sky will have changed to show that the local area is now merging with Oblivion.>
Sombren: "The sky! And Mehrunes Dagon! How is he here?"
Mehrunes Dagon: "This is my opposition? How easily I shall crush them!"
<Mehrunes Dagon then dismisses the group and turns away. Sombren and Calia run into the keep.>
Sombren: "Into the keep! Quickly!"
Councilor Vandacia: "The worlds are merging, Sombren! There is no escape. When you tire of running, I will be waiting in the courtyard."
<Vandacia teleports away.>

Once you head into the keep, you can listen to Sombren's plan to use the Mysterium Xarxes to weaken Vandacia. You will then have to fight your way to the coutyard. All the while, the keep will crumble around you as Mehrunes Dagon takes a stroll, taunting the defenders as goes:

Mehrunes Dagon: "The mortals call this a fortress? Its very stone crumbles in my presence."
Mehrunes Dagon: "Pathetic! Are those arrows or fleabites?"
Mehrunes Dagon: "Run, little maggots! Flee from the God of Destruction!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "Tremble before me as your realm becomes mine!"

When you reach the courtyard, Dagon can be seen in the background destroying things. Midway through your fight with Vandacia, he will appeal to Dagon to give him more power. When Vandacia is dead, Dagon's link to the world is severed. The Daedric Prince will then approach the wall and then address the Ambitions and you:

Mehrunes Dagon: "You defeated my high priest, mortals? That was … unexpected."
Mehrunes Dagon: "And before he completed the merging. That is unfortunate."
<Mehrunes Dagon stretches out his hand towards the Ambitions.>
Mehrunes Dagon: "Though this realm slips from my grasp, your fate is inevitable. You will join me or die, Ambitions. It is why you were created."
<Dagon's body dissolves into red light and the sky becomes normal again. Calia falls to her knees.>
Sombren: "We did it. We stopped Vandacia from merging the realms and opening the way for Mehrunes Dagon."
Calia: "But my brother … Destron is still dead …."
<Sombren approaches Calia and kneels beside her.>
Sombren: "I failed Destron, but I won't fail you."

Xarxes Crucible

Once Nokvroz is defeated:

The Anchorite: "We did it! Now to deal with the Perfected Cataclyst."
The Anchorite: "We need to destroy the cataclyst so they can't create anymore of those abominable Incarnates!"
The Anchorite: "We actually did it! I wasn't sure you'd come for me, but I'm glad you did."
The Anchorite: "Wait. Do you feel that? Something's coming. Oh … oh no!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "Nokvroz underestimated you. You are indeed powerful … for mortals."
Mehrunes Dagon: "Ah, I remember you, little one. Moricar's whelp. I have plans for you."
Mehrunes Dagon: "Your companions, however, are a momentary nuisance. I shall destroy them."
Rynkyus: "Fall back! We cannot fight Mehrunes Dagon!"
Lyranth: "Hang on, I'll get us out of here!"

Enter the gate into Destruction's Solace and suddenly your comrades start vanishing one-by-one in puff of smoke:

Mehrunes Dagon: "Did you expect to battle my legions? Foolish mortals. I have already won."
Eveli Sharp-Arrow: "Hey! What's happening?"
Eveli Sharp-Arrow: "Run!"

On the Solace Keep Battlements you'll hear Dagon taunting you:

Mehrunes Dagon: "You are insects. Less than insects! With the power of the Ambitions, soon Nirn shall be mine!"
Rynkyus: "Get down! Stay low!"

Dagon swipes his axe at your comrades:

Mehrunes Dagon: "Soon the pact will be fulfilled. My victory is inevitable."
Mehrunes Dagon: "What was freely given has been nurtured and will be freely returned!"

In The Lava Court, you'll hear Dagon instructing Sombren on opening a portal to Nirn:

Mehrunes Dagon: "Sombren, when I begin the merging, I will need the power of the Ambitions to complete it."
Mehrunes Dagon: "Sombren, open the portal to Nirn!"

Sombren's portal opens:

Mehrunes Dagon: "Forward, my warriors! The way to the mortal realm is clear!"
Sombren: "Yes, Lord Dagon! Your will is my command!"

Sombren's portal takes you to Sundercliff where he plans on giving his powers to Dagon. Dagon spots your pathetic solo attempt to stop him:

Mehrunes Dagon: "This is your great plan, Champion? Throwing pebbles? I will teach you true destruction."
Mehrunes Dagon: "Ah, there you are. The doomed leader of this pathetic rebellion. Tell me, are your people prepared for your death?"

The Anchorite then appears to distract him:

The Anchorite: "Dagon! I'm the one you want, right? Come and get me!"
The Anchorite: "Go! I'll keep Dagon busy!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "Mairead. Have you come to fulfill your purpose?"

The Anchorite will then engage him causing him to spew various taunts (he'll use these taunts throughout several stages of the battle):

  • Mehrunes Dagon: "I am the Lord of Fire and Flood!"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Feel my fury!"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "I will savor your dying breaths!"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Insolent pests! You will fall!"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Your world is mine, mortals."
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Your destruction is inevitable."

Later, The Anchorite will join you again:

Mehrunes Dagon: "There you are. So this is where you choose to die."

As the battle progresses, the same sequence of events happen over and over with random lines.

When The Anchorite has you wield the egonymic, Dagon will stumble back:

  • Mehrunes Dagon: "No!"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Pitiful mortal!"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "You dare strike me?"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "You will pay for that!"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "You dare?"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Arrogant vermin!"
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Aargh!"

Sombren will become overwhelmed and in need of Dagon's help:

  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Arise, Sombren. I still have use of you."
  • Mehrunes Dagon: "Ambition! There is still work to be done."

When you start to feel overwhelmed, Eveli joins the fray and distracts the Prince:

Eveli Sharp-Arrow: "Oy! Over here you giant mudcrab!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "Eveli Sharp-Arrow. You will be a thorn in my side no longer."
Eveli Sharp-Arrow: "Open fire!"

Later, Lyranth joins the fight:

Lyranth: "Fear not, little mortal. I am here."
Mehrunes Dagon: "Dremora. Why do you oppose me?"
Lyranth: "Most impressive Prince Dagon."
Mehrunes Dagon: "Insolent pests! You will fall!"
Lyranth: "Now!"
Lyranth: "Is this all the Prince of Destruction can do?"

Then Rynkyus joins you:

Mehrunes Dagon: "I will be free!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "Do you think you've won? That you could triumph over me? Fools! You have only seen a fraction of my power!"
Rynkyus: "We stand with you, Champion!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "If you wish to die together, so be it."
Mehrunes Dagon: "Insolent pests! You will fall!"

Once again, things seem impossible:

Eveli Sharp-Arrow: "We can't keep this up! It's too much!"
Lyranth: "Anchorite! It is time! Call forth the final piece of the Egonymic!"
The Anchorite: "Hold on while I summon the power!"
The Anchorite: "The egonymic can hurt Dagon! Use it now!"
Mehrunes Dagon: "This cannot be! Curse you, mortal! I am absolute! I am inevitable! No! No!"

Mehrunes Dagon dematerializes.
