Velyn Harbor (also called Port Velyn)[1] is a large coastal town near the Strid River estuary in the province of Valenwood. The town is Malabal Tor's main port[2][3] and was built by the Altmer.[4] Towns such as Velyn Harbor provided an opportunity for a cultural exchange between the Altmer and the local Bosmer, like how much Bosmeri swordsmanship had been refined from Altmer influence and access to materials.[5]

Layout and Geography[edit]

2nd Era map of Velyn Harbor

Velyn Harbor is located on the northwesternmost point of Valenwood, on the Broken Coast region where it is adjacent to the Gold Coast in Cyrodiil. The town is built into the eponymous Velyn Bay, a cove riddled with islands sprawled across it to the north. The central marketplace and downtown are on the small western peninsula on the coast, the residential district and town hall are inland to the east, and the docks are north on the rocky islands. Velyn Harbor's southern gate goes straight into the Greenshade region while the eastern gate is the gateway into the greater Malabal Tor region.[6]

Velyn Harbor's central hub, the marketplace is centered around the smithy. The road to Greenshade goes around one large building to the south and goes uphill through a large gate. The wayshrine is off this beaten path, on a stone foundation while the area in front of the gate provides open spaces for encampments.[6]

East of the marketplace, across the river, is the residential district, a raised hill area with a fountain in the center. Paved roads run along the base of the hill, going north to the docks and going south toward the eastern gate. The town hall is on the northeast corner of the district. Connected to the residential district via another bridge is the Velyn Harbor docks.[6] The docks are built on two islands, one where the warehouses are and the other with the sole lighthouse.[6] The warehouses here contain the settlement's food supply.[7]

History[edit]

Finoriell of Velyn Harbor

When Velyn Harbor was founded is unknown, however, it was already an established settlement by the time Falinesti had disappeared[11] sometime around 2E 382 and 432.[12] At that time, it was a small encampment[11] but the settlement eventually grew into an active port.[6] Other Altmer colonies on Valenwood, such as Haven[13] and Marbruk were also built sometime in the Second Era.[14] The people of Velyn Harbor often traded with Redguard merchants and grew to call them Ra Gada as a sign of respect.[7]

Sometime in the mid-Second Era, a local Bosmer named Finoriell was revealed to be the Green Lady rather later than customary. She performed her handfasting ceremony with the then Silvenar, Edhelorn.[15] After years of traveling around the world, in 2E 580, Princess Ayrenn of the Summerset Isles arrived in Port Velyn and embarked to Firsthold where she would reclaim her birthright as Queen.[1] Not long after her arrival, however, the town was attacked by Maormer pirates. A contingent of Bosmer scouts accompanied by Treethane Serenarth was able to defeat them and save the town.[4]

In 2E 582, after the new Silvenar Indaenir was announced, preparations for the Handfasting ceremony between him and the new Green Lady, Gwaering were put into motion. Velyn Harbor began to make preparations for their arrival while the Fists of Thalmor stationed in town, led by Captain Cularalda, were ordered by the Queen to escort them to their city of Silvenar out east as their honor guard. Another contingent of the Fists was supposed to reach the Velyn Harbor by sea but before they arrived, the town was besieged by a combined force of the Drublog Clan of Wood Orcs, who entered from the wilderness and Redguard pirates called the Ra Gada, who made landfall before them.[7][16]

A retaliation coordinated between Lieutenant Ehran and Sergeant Linaarie of the Fists was set into motion while the Captain hid from battle. An Agent of the Aldmeri Dominion assisted Ehran in his plan to create a civilian militia and retake the town. While the Agent rescued civilians from the Trade Hall and Mages Guild, the Lieutenant went out to find the captain in the docks and secure the residential district for a runner to warn the rest of the region. The Agent was later able to clear the way for the runner, but the Lieutenant charged ahead of them and was fatally wounded by Chief Makhug, leader of the Drublog raiders.[17]

The Agent killed the chieftain and the Ra Gada captain in the lighthouse, all the while, Sergeant Linaarie found the Captain cowering from the conflict. While Velyn Harbor was saved and its people began to rebuild, the Fists of Thalmor arrested Captain Cularalda for her failure to protect the town.[18] Gwaering, the Green Lady arrived not long afterward and met with the Agent. While she took time to meet with the locals, she sent them to the nearest Wood Orc settlement, Dra'bul to learn more about their current alignments.[19]

Known Rulers[edit]

Velyn Harbor Town Hall

Even though the Altmer use the historical title of "Canonreeve" for their equivalent of a town leader or county administrator,[20] Velyn Harbor uses the common Tamrielic title of "mayor".[21][22] The Key to Velyn Harbor is a hollow brass key that can be played like a fife.[23]
