Public Domain

Can an admin alter the Mediawiki:Licenses page so that new images with the Public Domain license use the full name template ({{Public Domain}}) instead of the shortcut PD (I have just moved the template page). Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 02:20, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Not an admin, but patrollers can edit the MediaWiki namespace, so I changed it. It appears to be working. —Dillonn241 (talk) 05:35, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

MediaWiki Upgrade

It's been too long since we've upgraded MW so I've started working on getting a few updates installed in the next few months.

  • Dev Wiki installed at (content3:/home/uesp/dev/www/w/)
  • Dev Wiki updated to 1.24 (extensions not all updated yet).
  • My notes on the upgrade and encountered issues with solutions is at User:Daveh/Wiki_Upgrade_1.24.
  • I'll be not skipping any MW updates and doing them consecutively (i.e., 1.24, 1.25, 1.26, etc...). Ran into way too many problems by trying to skip a few last time.
  • On the server side we're fine up to MW 1.27 and then we'll have to start updating PHP, MySQL and Apache.
  • Aiming for minimal downtime on the wiki (ideally 0 downtime and minimal read-only time). The dev wiki took 4 hours to do the database upgrade from 1.23 to 1.24.

Right now the dev wiki running 1.24 looks fine after a few issues fixed but I'd like people to test it for at least a week to find any other obvious issues before considering pushing it to the live wiki. This gives me time to figure out the best way of upgrading the live wiki. -- Daveh (talk) 16:30, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

A bit slow, but I got it. Looks like they undid all of their damage. —Dillonn241 (talk) 04:00, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
Yeah I verified each one was reverted correctly, with no lost content. Thank you. --Xyzzy Talk 05:23, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Inappropriate Username

User:UESP has been created, and made an edit apparently linking to a Discord server. Unless this account belongs to the site, it shouldn't be allowed due to the possibility of confusion or abuse. Echo (talk) 23:40, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

I blocked the user, because the edit looks a lot like a scam to steal in-game gold from unaware users. --Ilaro (talk) 23:45, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
Might need to ban it here in case they try others, and indefinitely ban the account, or rename it and then ban it. It's a simple copy-paste job, just use the example from 18th July there and the rename log. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:20, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Looking into it. Will update in a few minutes. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:31, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
It doesn't appear to have been a staff member, so the user is now blocked and the name has been added to the title blacklist. While there have been a few users with variants of "UESP" in their names before, only Ruesp (owner of the Russian UESP) has had any significant number of edits; the rest had one or no edits, so I don't see adding the name to the blacklist as any kind of hardship. If anyone wants such a name in the future, admins can always create an account for the person in question. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:44, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

MediaWiki Upgrade 1.24

Just a heads up that I'm planning on upgrading the site's MediaWiki from 1.23 to 1.24 this Friday (Sept 28) at around 10am EST. The upgrade on the dev server was pretty straightforward with only a few changes required so the live upgrade should hopefully be as simple. There should be no site down-time or read-only time unless something goes wrong. Look here for updates when it starts and finishes. -- Daveh (talk) 00:22, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

It looks like we successfully made it to 1.24.6 at some point. Amusingly, one of the very first things I tried, entering a page in the Search box, failed. (<sigh> The things that don't happen or don't get noticed before going live...! lol) I'm just waking up, but if Dave's not already on it by that point, I'll try to look into it once I'm a bit more awake.
Also, if there's anything else that anyone notices not working, please post here or in #wiki_discussion on Discord and either Dave or I will look into it. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:17, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
I'm rebuilding the search index which "should" fix search but its slow going...might take a good day to complete. Other than that the only other issue brought up is the default thumbnail size is bigger. -- Daveh (talk) 18:31, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

Known Issues

I will update these as information becomes available, and anyone else is welcome to update these as needed. Resolved issues should be struck out. Please describe new issues above this section.

  • Default thumbnail size is bigger: this is known and expected. MW 1.24 changed the default from 180px to 300px. This was done due to overwhelming user preferences for 300px. (See Phabricator Task T69703 for details.)
  • Slow page loads: seems to have resolved by itself. Probably just post-upgrade server load.
  • Slow page edits: seems to have resolved by itself. Probably just post-upgrade server load.
  • Preferences don't show: something to do with UespCustomCode. Disabled the custom menu temporarily and preferences work again for now. Dillon is looking into it.
  • Search doesn't work properly: As per Preferences, UespCustomCode is the problem here. Disabled menu for now. This changes the appearance of the search, but at least it works. Dillon is looking into it. Tried code from Dillon, but it didn't work. Left the code additions in SiteSpecialSearch.php, but menu is disabled again in SiteCustomCode.php.
  • WantedPages doesn't show up.
  • The three above issues appear to be all due to the deprecated "array syntax" for $wgSpecialPages. Changing these to the class format fixes them.
  • Old Code (1.23)
  • SiteCustomCode.php
    $aSpecialPages['Preferences'] = array('SpecialPage', 'Preferences', , true, 'efSiteSpecialPreferences', $dir . 'SiteSpecialPreferences.php');
  • SiteSpecialPreferences.php
    function efSiteSpecialPreferences($par) {
         global $wgRequest;
         $form = new SitePreferencesForm( $wgRequest );
  • New Code (1.24)
  • SiteCustomCode.php
    $aSpecialPages['Preferences'] = 'SitePreferencesForm';
  • SiteSpecialPreferences.php
    function __construct( ) {
         global $wgRequest;
         $request = $wgRequest;
  • Edit page notice not appearing: looks like it is trying to grab it from the wrong namespace (related to UespCustomCode?). Is this fixed? I couldn't find any issues.
  • Appears to have been a temporary issue that hasn't shown up since the initial update.
  • Search Popup Not Working:
  • Modify line 130 in /resources/src/mediawiki/mediawiki.searchSuggest.js to include custom namespaces:
    namespace: '0|102|104|106|108|110|112|114|116|118|120|122|124|126|128|130|132|134|136|138|140|142|144|146|148|150',
  • <code>-tagged text now has a border around it: almost certainly some minor change in the CSS/LESS files. Might actually be something we want to keep, though it makes template documentation look a bit odd. That could be fixed by changes to the {{Parameters}} template itself, though.
  • UespVector skin is broken: looks like it's not loading CSS at all, or maybe a significant portion is broken/rewritten. Haven't looked into it beyond the visual display at this point.
  • ESO map and build editor can't save/edit builds.
  • Was due to Memcached being disabled in the config on dev and not uncommented when moved to live. Fixed.
Many times I get some weirdly broken CSS. I've looked into it and it seems like sometimes I get a page generated by "MediaWiki 1.23.11" while others I get a page generated by "MediaWiki 1.24.6". It always gets fixed when I refresh using Ctrl+R. So either you have two different versions of MW behind a load balancer, or your HTTP caching system is broken. -- 23:53, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

2018 Fan Gift

It's that time of the year again to start thinking about what we want to do for a UESP editor/fan gift (last year was calendars, the year before a map poster). A few ideas to get started:

  • Calendar (very popular but we did this last year)
  • Poster (using fan art or screenshots)
  • Deck of Playing Cards (with UESP logo and/or fan art, suggested by AKB)
  • Drink Mug/Stein/Tumbler (with UESP logo and/or fan art, suggested by AKB)

Feel free to comment on these or suggest your own. -- Daveh (talk) 16:33, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

I really like the playing cards idea! Playing cards with TES characters sounds a lot of fun. --Ilaro (talk) 17:52, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
After messaging everyone on our Discord, some more ideas came forward, and people commented on the existing ones.
  • Calendar gained some positive comments.
  • The drink mug/stein/tumbler idea was received very well.
  • I believe the cards were the most popular of the original suggestions.
Some new ones that I saw:
  • Pin badges (with the UESP logo or art)
  • Socks (with the UESP logo or art)
  • Plush animals were very popular, but I believe that one might be too tricky to get done.
I think socks or pin badges would be the more reasonable of those three new ones. My current order of preference would be calendar, pin, deck of cards, socks, and drink holder. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 21:49, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
I'm in the market for a new mousepad. How about a UESP logo mousepad? One, it would be cool to have something UESP always with my tech in my laptop bad, and two, if I was **sent** a mousepad I wouldn't have to spend money on one. ;) -damon  talkcontribs 23:35, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
This is me nudging you guys to get your voices heard! Again, I think the best options are calendar (we know how to organize and do this one already), pin (minimum complications), deck of cards (we'd need to design a deck of cards within the time frame remaining, so more challenging), socks (probably doable, but socks wear down!), drink holder (comparatively very expensive and hard to ship so we'd be able to do less). --AKB Talk Cont Mail 06:21, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
I quite like the idea of a little pin - I'd wear that thing everywhere :) (Assuming that it is not negated by the weight issue.) Timeoin (talk) 06:56, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
I'm a mug collector myself, so that would be my first choice. Apart from that, I have no real preference. Robin Hood  (talk) 07:24, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
If I wasnt worried about how a mug would travel (or cost) to get over here to upside-down land, that would be my vote as well. Timeoin (talk) 09:00, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
I like the idea of a pack of cards; if time is too short, a badge/pin would probably be my second choice. --Enodoc (talk) 11:50, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
Mug, calendar, pin badge - my top three. I know we did calendar, but I really liked it and would love a new one hanging above my desk :D Tib (talk) 12:28, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

() One might say a calendar gives more, as it is an artwork in itself in addition to showing of good artworks, but only visitors may see it. A discreet pin, on the other hand, might be worn on suits and certain types of dresses on all kinds of occasions. I might leave it off if I were invited to His Majesty the King's gala, but I would wear it at work and private occasions, both informal and formal. Especially if I suspect other gamers might attend. —MortenOSlash (talk) 07:19, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Some great ideas and a few comments. Most of the cost limitations right now are related to shipping items. For example the calendar shipping cost was about 75% of the total cost last year. So easier to ship items are definitely better. We can do larger/heavier items but the number of items we can send out will be reduced.
  • Calendar -- Love this idea as it engages our fans to submit screenshots and shipping is relatively straightforward.
  • Cards/Pins -- Good idea and looks like not too much more difficult/expensive to ship compared to calendars.
  • Mug -- Probably too large for a general fan gift. We can consider this for a limited admin/editor gift perhaps.
  • Plush Animals -- Possible but a much longer lead time, probably a very high minimum order (500-1000) and difficult to avoid the ES trademark/copyright.
We should try to finalize a decision soon so we can get started on everything needed to get them out before Christmas as much as possible. If anyone happens to have any ideas regarding reducing our shipping costs let me know. Most gifts last year were sent internationally which skyrockets the shipping cost, especially for packages. The volume we do seems much too small to use any sort of shipping company or merchandise shipper. -- Daveh (talk) 17:48, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
It must be remembered that the UESP fan gift serves three purposes. Firstly, it's a reward to UESP wiki editors and other staff. Secondly, it's given away in drawings and raffles on UESP social media. Thirdly, it's sent out to Bethesda, Zenimax, and presumably now Spankypants (developer of ES: Legends) to remind them that UESP exists and that they should use us as a reference.
Any reasonable gift is good for existing fans. UESP wiki editors aren't going to forget that the wiki exists. However, for Strangers From The Outside (i.e. random social media readers and game developers), we want the gift to be useful in some way and ideally an item which is used every day, so that they are constantly reminded of the existence of UESP. This made the calendar absolutely amazing, as office decor for offices and cubicles in the game developers' studios and as study/bedroom/living room decor in people's houses.
I liked the calendar very much but I'm not sure if we want to offer a calendar every year, because that will get boring fast. I'm all for pins (ideally, enamel metal pins rather than just printed button badges), but they aren't great as a gift for the game studios. We might need to consider something else for them, e.g. Christmas cards signed by as many staff members as possible. (Each person signs a piece of paper and scans it in, or photographs it. Then someone collects and collates the digital versions of the signatures. I've done this before and it isn't too horrendous an undertaking, unless the photographs have shadows.)
I am strongly against plush animals unless they are Elder Scrolls relevant. I love my cuddly toys, but the last thing I need is a cheap teddy bear wearing a crappy t-shirt with a UESP logo printed on it. If someone was able to design a plushie Molag Bal or something, and get that produced, it would be THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER. But we'd definitely fall foul of copyright then.
The deck of cards idea is brilliant, though ONLY if every card has a unique picture on the front. (Again, I'm rather opposed to the idea of a cheap pack of cards which is printed out with the UESP logo on the back.) However, collecting 52 artworks or screenshots of the appropriate size is a large enough undertaking that we would probably need to start now for NEXT year.
In summary, my first vote is for metal pins with Christmas cards signed by as many UESP staff as possible. Second vote would be a mug if we can figure out the cost of sending them (remember, decent mugs are breakable). Third vote would be a calendar. I think the required lead time on a pack of cards is several months and we don't have the time for it this year, but it would be great to start collecting screenshots soon for next year. baratron (talk) 06:50, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

We need to make a decision by Friday, so to get our overall favorite chosen, we're going to have a quick vote. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 22:23, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Calendar. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 22:23, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Calendar looks to be the best logistically, so I vote we have a Calendar again this year. - KriHavok (talk) 22:36, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
  • As much as I"d love to see plushies, that seems prohibitively expensive. My vote goes to Pins/Cards. Echo (talk) 22:42, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
  • I love the idea of a stein, albeit it an expensive venture, I think the idea is wonderfully novel! --FireAcolyte (talk) 22:58, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Assuming that this is not Admin-only (I don't think it is. If it is though, please feel free to revert). I'd vote for a little metal badge thingy if not prohibitive by cost. Timeoin (talk) 00:06, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
  • In the interest of novelty I think pins/playing cards would be my vote. Contraptions (talk) 00:22, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Gift Details

Lots of great ideas here but it looks like pins wins for this year. Keep the other ideas on hold for next Christmas or other events.

To confirm some of the details:

  1. Type of Pin
  1. Lapel Pin (a "pin badge"?,
  2. Button Pin (
I assume people were talking about the first option. Buttons are a little cheaper but not significantly and I would prefer a nice lapel/badge pin.
  1. Logo -- I assume the main site logo or variation thereof (the one in the upper left corner of the desktop site).
  2. Attachment Type -- Lapel pins usually come with a butterfly clutch (a pinch type attachment) but a safety pin like a button pin has might be more convienient.
  3. Size --- Typically offered in the 0.75 - 1.5" range. Not a huge difference in price so will probably go with the 1 - 1.25" size.
  4. Quantity -- Based on the cost and typical minimum order I think we can do 250.
  5. Shipping -- Can be shipped as a "large" envelope in a bubble mailer (half the cost as the calendars).
  6. Extras -- Thinking about including some free stickers of some sort.

Would like to nail down the specifics this week so I can source providers and get the order in by next week. -- Daveh (talk) 18:20, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Lapel pin sounds good to me. The best attachment type probably depends on size - if a safety pin attachment will work on the size we're going for, that would be my preference, otherwise a butterfly clutch will be fine. --Enodoc (talk) 19:21, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
Looking into the lapel pin types more it looks like there are two basic types we could make. The first is a photo printed pin with a metal back/border (silver or gold colored) that would use the logo as it is (pink lines would be the metal border).
The second type would be a simpler type with metal borders (any black line) separating color filled areas. It has to be a simpler design with a few colors and even as it is might lose some detail in the edges and make the text a little more bold.

I would go with the first option with a silver colored metal but am open to suggestions. -- Daveh (talk) 00:41, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

First option seems best. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 18:05, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

I've ordered the pins and the estimated arrival is around 2 weeks. I ordered x250 of the 1.25" with a stainless metal backing/border which should look roughly like the below image.

Once they are in I'll take some pictures and post them. In the meantime people can start thinking about how we're going to distribute them (contests/events, developers, ES fans/sites, etc...). -- Daveh (talk) 21:55, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

The pins have arrived and they look great!

UESP Pin (2018 Fan Gift).jpg

Distribution will be similar to the last few years of fan gifts:

  • Wiki admins, forums admins/mods, ESO guild leaders all get one (contact me if you aren't sure whether you qualify or not).
  • I'll be running a random draw for many pins open to anyone like last year (a drawing for everyone and drawing for wiki editors separately). Contest form is available at
  • Social media, forums, ESO guild leaders can contact me for the number of pins they would like to give away or for their own contests.
  • We'll be giving some away to ES devs and community leaders (contact me if you have a suggestion).
  • Mailing form for the pin is available at

There are 250 pins so distribution numbers will be similar to last year. I also have +50 maps from 2 years ago I can include as prizes if people want them. -- Daveh (talk) 17:16, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

For ES devs/fan sites I'm currently thinking about:
  • 5 for ESO (sent to Jessica).
  • 5 for Bethesda (sent to Matt).
  • 5 for Legends developer (do we have any contacts there?).
  • ESO sub-reddit moderators
  •  ?
More suggestions on ES fan sites/people we can send to are wanted. Ideally people we interact with and are currently active in the ES community. -- Daveh (talk) 18:23, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
I shouldn't have any issue organizing events to giveaway 50 or even more. I'd love to know what the guild leaders would like, though. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 00:15, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Main Page/News Layout Notes

I'm in the process of tweaking the mobile layout to be a little better which includes that for the UESP app which is getting to a releasable state in the near future. For the main page and news I've made a few changes to make them display better on narrow screens.

For the main page I've added an empty div with some styles after the main logo and before the text blurb to prevent the text from becoming too narrow on the right side.

For the news there's a few general layout guide to prevent the images in the news article from looking out of place in narrow screens:

  • Place the image after the title and before the <div>
  • Add the empty div the styles below to prevent narrow text columns.
  • Add a {{NewLine}} at the end of each news article with an image to prevent short news articles or long images from confusing the display.

So a basic news article would look something like:

=== Title ===
<div style="display: table; height: 0; width: 12em;"></div>

If anyone has more suggestions for mobile style tweaks on the main page or any other page let me know. You can always preview the mobile display by going to and resizing your browser window to be narrower. -- Daveh (talk) 17:41, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

We should probably put the styles into the site CSS so that we can readily change styles between the mobile version and the desktop version. (I added a class some time ago, so maybe just tweak that...?) A simple template might also be beneficial just to standardize everything and make any future changes a one-stop change, rather than having to worry about going over all historical entries. Robin Hood  (talk) 02:04, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
Will have to play with it to see how a CSS only solution will work. I think the {{NewLine}} effect could be easily added to the news div but unsure about the empty div to prevent narrow text columns. Could possibly use ::before or ::after CSS pseudo-elements but don't know if this will work the same as the empty divs in the locations they are in. Its probably possible but have to figure out exactly how. -- Daveh (talk) 18:11, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

I had the idea to get the following extension installed: Tabber. This would allow us to cycle between different content without clicking links. For example, we could make an infobox like they used on this wiki where you can click on the tabs to show the different variants of the same item, or it can be used to switch between dialogue trees in branching quest lines, or probably many other possible usages. Thoughts? --Ilaro (talk) 11:01, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

A couple of things that should be taken into account (and I don't really have much knowledge about this kind of stuff), but I am not sure if the Tabber is compatible with the mobile skin. Also, I am not sure if we have the right mediawiki/PHP update. If that's not the case, we might need to look for something else or wait until the wiki is updated to the required versions. --Ilaro (talk) 11:10, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
Agreed in theory, as it is a very useful extension that I have used elsewhere. However, it requires MediaWiki 1.25+ and PHP 5.6+, and we're currently only on 1.24.6 and 5.3.3, so we'll need to wait until the next upgrade before we can install it here. I'm not sure if it works in MobileFrontend, but if it doesn't, what will happen instead is each tab would be displayed one after the other on the page. --Enodoc (talk) 19:26, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
