Admin Bot
As things stand now, none of our bots has admin permissions. For the most part, we haven't needed them, although even as things stand, all of our bots have slightly higher permissions than the default for bots, two of which are for specific jobs. The only one of particular note is the ability to protect pages and edit them, which HoodBot uses to run automated page protection for our various archives, main game pages, and so forth. The more negligible rights all our bots have are:
- View a deleted page's history (but not the text). The ESO NPC creator uses that to detect NPCs that have previously been created and deleted so it doesn't try to create them again.
- Title blacklist override. This just allows all our bots to override the title blacklist when creating a page, much as they ignore CAPTCHA checks.
- In the past, we've temporarily granted HoodBot admin permissions so it could bulk-change infinite IP blocks. (Note: technically, it was still on HotnBOThered's account, but it was the very beginnings of HoodBot that were running behind the scenes, since HnB had no ability to manage blocks at all.)
Since we keep having these needs intermittently, and since HoodBot seems to be the only one using them, I'd like to request that HoodBot be granted permanent admin rights, or if not full admin rights then at least a significant subsection of those rights. It probably shouldn't be patrolling edits or blocking users, for example, but that's a simple question of whether to give the bot full admin powers with the understanding it won't do certain things, which is much easier, or whether to create a whole new rights list for it, which is safer in the event that a bot job goes rogue or the bot account is hacked. Full disclosure: the ability to mass delete last night's faulty bot run would be really handy right now, which is why I'm thinking of it, but I intend to delete those files manually since bots don't currently have deletion rights. If people are okay with giving HoodBot admin rights, I'd suggest that we remove page protection abilities for non-admin bots at the very least, and probably viewing the deleted revision history can go too, since it's such a specific use case.

Password reset ten years later?
Hi, I’m C Teng, and I haven’t logged in since 2012. I’d like to edit again, but I’m not sure it was even possible to connect email to an account when I created it in 2008, so I can’t do a regular password reset. However, I recently regained access to my Wikia/Fandom account, and I’ve just put a message on my user page there that should hopefully be sufficient evidence that I am indeed who I say I am. (If not, no biggie—I made most of my edits here as a dumbass 13-year-old, so no great loss if I have to make a new account. But I thought I’d ask.) Thanks. 208.125.39.195 23:01, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
- You actually do have an e-mail associated with the account, but it's a domain I haven't seen anyone use in a very long time, so even though the domain still exists AFAIK, I wouldn't be surprised if you no longer have access to that account. Regardless, your edits on Wikia are sufficient for me to believe that you're you. If you can e-mail me from the e-mail address you want to associate with your account, I can set that up and then you should be able to do a standard reset from there. – Robin Hood (talk) 03:07, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

- Just to follow up on this, I still haven't heard from you. If you tried to send something, it may have gotten caught by my spam filter. If you changed your mind and decided to start a new account, that's fine too. Just let me know what's up. Thanks! – Robin Hood (talk) 14:44, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- My bad, kept forgetting to check back here! Awesome, thank you! I'll send that email to you right now. And wow, you must be referring to my AOL Instant Messenger email address, lol. That's really old, jeez. 208.125.39.195 00:23, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, wow. Never thought I'd regain access to that ancient AOL account, but I just tried the first password I ever made, the one I created in 2006 at age 11—and it worked! C Teng is back, on UESP and AOL. Exciting times. Glad you mentioned it was set up under a weird domain, because I never would've guessed I still had anything linked to AOL in 2012, lol. Thanks for the help! C Teng (talk) 01:13, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Kill Rollback Gadget
For admins who sometimes click on "rollback" accidentally, there's now a gadget to allow you to disable the button. You still have the right and the text will still display (albeit faded), but the button won't work. Of course, should a spammer strike, you can disable the gadget to re-enable rollback at any time. This is an insanely primitive gadget, so let me know if you come across any cases of it not working. Oh and only those who have rollback rights will see the gadget. – Robin Hood (talk) 01:43, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Requesting Lore:Hero be protected or an IP be blocked
Hello, there have been numerous edits done on Lore:Hero by one IP that repeatedly change the pronouns of heroes. Tyrvarion and I have tried stopping these edits via undos, talk page, and warning, but they persist. If they could be blocked or the page could be protected to prevent this, that would be much appreciated. Mindtrait0r (talk) 15:24, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- This is the same IP range as has been making all the tendentious edits to Lore:Shezarr and all those other pages. I blocked the entire range for a year, and just to add a little extra protection, I also protected the page for a month. – Robin Hood (talk) 16:08, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
Contributor Behavior Policy
Hoping this is the right place to post this - apologies if it's not.
Earlier today I finished an in-game (Elder Scrolls Online) conversation with one of my guilds' members who was very enthusiastic about the UESP project and was trying to get involved/spent a lot of time editing/contributing information to help update. All of her work was then deleted by another contributor with minimal explanation (she sincerely didn't understand), she was scolded, and apparently he then sent her a nasty email which unsurprisingly turned her off to our whole organization in general and now she really dislikes UESP. When I viewed this "aggressor's" edits out of curiosity, his editing comments do look rather patronizing.
The reason I'm bringing this is up is frankly not asking for intervention regarding someone else's personal drama that happened in the past, but more to ask about how UESP goes about policing such interactions / behavior, if at all, or what standards/screening/vetting processes there are in place, if any, in lieu, prior to user engagement. Of course we are all volunteers and all enterprises have their fair share of jerks, but such interactions of course have implications for future benefaction, I don't think it unreasonable to expect minimal decorum when interacting with others, and it was, in the least, a disappointing story to hear - certainly not a great look for "us."
Thanks for your consideration (and patience as I am *still* learning how to navigate the wiki). eslofe (talk) 02:18, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi eslofe, there are certainly guidelines, etiquettes and policies in place for these kind of behavior. People should act kind, assume good faith and try to reach a consensus on talk pages. If someone doesn't adhere to these standards or when something can't be resolved due conflict between the two parties, it should be notified to a (neutral) admin or even DaveH (UESP's founder). Please do this, otherwise we won't be aware of this behavior, especially if something happens off-wiki in context of the wiki (like how you mentioned nasty emails). The admin will try to sort out the problem and take action where necessary. If you have any other questions, I'm happy to help!
- I've no idea what happened in this specific case, and if your guild member wants, I can try to review it? It's no problem if the user wants to stay anonymous. You can reach me on my email listed on the wiki or my discord Ilaro#6607. --Ilaro (talk) 22:17, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
-
- Bah, Ilaro beat me to it! Most of my reply duplicates his, so the only thing I'll add is to your question about processes in place prior to user engagement. While there are the various policies, procedures, and guidelines that Ilaro mentioned, the wiki is generally free for anyone to edit. We only get involved if something goes wrong. Someone undoing another's edit can sometimes be a case of something going wrong, and it's not always obvious at a glance. No single person—not even Dave—gets to decide what content is or isn't appropriate for the wiki. If someone undoes an edit wholesale, especially a large/complex one, it's best to ask another wiki editor or even an entire Discord channel (#wiki-discussion, usually) for a second opinion. – Robin Hood (talk) 22:41, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

ESO Online Pages Needing Cleanup
It seeems like just about every page for ESO Online (1,125 total) is flagged as needing cleanup for Update 36. How is this flag applied, how can it be cleared, and are we going to see it come back now that Update 37 is released? Fiwiji (talk) 15:55, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
- I'd like to know how it can be cleared too. I've seen it on the armor pages, I know how to update them, I'd *like* to, but cannot figure out how to do clear it. Oath2order (talk) 18:17, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
-
- After confirming that the page's data is accurate to Update 37, removing the {{Online Update}} template at the top of the page will clear the tag. Mindtrait0r (talk) 20:16, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

(←) The {{Online Update}} template is a reminder to editors to update the information on the page whenever a new patch comes out. Once that's been done, for anything except skills or item sets, you should add/change to the template to indicate that everything's up to date and that the message doesn't need to be displayed. So, for example, if you've just updated an NPC for patch 37, you would use: {{Online Update|update=37}} and the message will disappear. For skills and item sets, the bot updates those and handles the update procedure automatically, so there's no need to update those, but you should ping me on Discord to remind me that it needs to be done. I usually wait a day or two after a new patch drops, just to be sure that we actually have up-to-date information in the ESO viewer, which is where the bot takes its data from. Also, just so you understand what you're looking at, the bot uses a behind-the-scenes method of mass updating version numbers across all pages of a specific type (so far, skills and item sets), so on those pages, you shouldn't see any update parameters; if you do, they can be removed.
While removing the template will certainly remove the message, it's also removing the entire reminder for all future updates, so you no longer know at a glance whether the page has been updated or not. So don't do that. On the contrary, if you see a page that reasonably should be updated every version but doesn't have that template, please add it. Since I don't play the game, I have no idea what types of pages that might encompass, but I would guess that probably NPCs would be one broad category, and maybe quests. Places probably don't need one, since I imagine those tend to be fairly static, and even if there are slight changes on occasion, they're probably not major unless they're patch-related. Then again, I would've said that about item sets as well and we see major changes to those often enough, so don't take my word for it. The frequent ESO editors can give better guidance here than I can.
Related to this, whenever a new patch comes out, you should also update Online:Patch to use the new version number, as I just did here. Anyone can (and should) do this. That will trigger a whole new wave of message boxes to appear so that people know that things need updating. Do not adjust the version numbers in the botitemset or botskills parameters. As their name implies, those are the behind-the-scenes numbers that the bot uses to indicate when it's updated those things. – Robin Hood (talk) 17:19, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- Skills and sets were showing the Update 36 cleanup header until today, when they switched to Update 37. Did the bot to clean them up not get run since November when Update 36 came out? Fiwiji (talk) 21:28, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
-
- They changed because I updated the patch number earlier when I posted the above message. Right now, for the bot-updated stuff, only skills should still be displaying the note, and those will go away shortly, as I'm just doing a few last things and then I'll be running the skills bot job. Also, from the looks of things, the bot never got ran after update 36, which is why it was still saying that things needed to be updated. Typically, that's a combination of me forgetting and nobody reminding me. :) – Robin Hood (talk) 00:09, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
-
-
- Skills have a summary paragraph below the in-game description. This paragraph appears to be generated manually, as I've found several that were a couple updates out of date. There are several skills/morphs in this update that are getting significant reworks, which means their summaries will be out of sync with their descriptions again. Is there a way to flag pages where the bot updates the description so users know the summary needs to be looked at, and then a way to clear the flag when the summary is verified/corrected? Fiwiji (talk) 12:12, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- In theory, the bot's results page should show you the significant (description) changes and the trivial ones where only the numbers changed, but I recently rewrote that and it looks as though it's currently spitting out all changes as non-trivial and no change at all as trivial. I'll have a look at that later today and I think I should be able to update the list so it's accurate, but the existing list can probably get you started. I think I'll also move it to a dedicated page as well because as it is, it tends to get obliterated pretty quickly by other jobs, so you end up having to comb through the results history sometimes just to find those results.
-
-
-
-
-
- There's currently no tag/untag mechanism, but we can either add a category/template to any page that gets a description update, or we can extend the existing system a little so that if the bot makes a description change, it alters the page Online Update template to read something like {{Online Update|textupdate=needed}}, then the person who updates it can simply remove the textupdate= portion once it's been updated. Either is easy for the bot, so it's just a question of what would be easiest and most intuitive for editors. – Robin Hood (talk) 14:38, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
-
-
- The bot results have now been updated correctly. I haven't moved them to a new page yet, though. That'll come next time we do a full run. – Robin Hood (talk) 04:45, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Modifying the {{Online Update}} template would require it to be added to all Skill pages instead of handled invisibly as it is now. If an editor accidentally deleting the template from the page would cause problems for the bot, then a unique {{TextUpdateNeeded}} template might be a better approach. Another consideration is that, even for trivial updates, there will likely be a patch note documenting the change that should get added to the page. Fiwiji (talk) 21:02, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Username change!
Hi! Wondering if I could get a username change—I went by "C Teng" back in my Wikia days, but I'd prefer it be changed to "Will-B", to match my Wikipedia (and real-life) name. Thanks! (No rush, obvs.) —Will (C Teng) [talk] 21:06, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

Sidebar tools capitalization
This is super minor of course, but I noticed that every link in the sidebar is in title case except for a few in the toolbox: "Related changes", "Page information", "Cite this page", and "View user groups". Personally I dislike the UESPWiki:Spelling policy of capitalizing every word in titles and headings (I much prefer the Wikipedia approach of universal sentence case), but if we're gonna do it, we might as well be consistent about it. I can't seem to find the MediaWiki page for those links, though—MediaWiki:Sidebar just has "TOOLBOX". —Will • B [talk] 21:54, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
- This is actually harder than it looks and it brings up a larger question as to what should be capitalized and what shouldn't. In the sidebar, the ones with mixed case are drawing from system names, which use the Wikimedia policy of mixed case, and those have to be updated by finding the relevant system message and updating it—it's not just a matter of changing a single page. Then, if you do that, maybe Special Pages should also be done. But then, if you do that, maybe all our custom extensions should also be updated. And on and on it goes....
- Back in the dawn of time, I'm pretty sure all those system links were title case too, but Wikimedia made the switch, where we never did, so that's why there's the discrepancy. Personally, I'd be for switching to mixed case for most pages outside of gamespace. Inside gamespace, I can see that causing a lot of confusion, since it gets into the issue of what's a proper noun and what isn't. Is Unmarked Cave actually called "Unmarked Cave" by the locals or is it just a cave that's not marked on any maps (except yours, apparently). Depending on which one is true, the capitalization will differ. My personal take would be that any marked places in the game, any NPC names, etc., should all use the in-game capitalization, which is almost always title case. But then that wraps back around to the vast majority of pages using title case, in which case the mixed case pages, like "Main quest", start to look like oddballs, so there would have to be a discussion around that.
- This is why nobody's ever changed them. 😉 – Robin Hood (talk) 17:42, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
-
- Sounds like a whole can of worms! Well, maybe someday. And yeah I can see how the in-game capitalizations make it more confusing than for other types of wikis. Since video game interfaces often like to capitalize just about everything. Caused me plenty of distress back in my RuneScape Wiki days. —Will • B [talk] 01:18, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
-
-
- Yeah, it's definitely a can of worms and the more you look into it, the deeper the can goes. I hadn't really given it much thought, but you may have a point that switching away from sentence case and overriding the MediaWiki defaults to be title case might be the best choice. At least then, the numbers of changes are going to be relatively limited...or at least I think they would. I'm a little busy at the moment, but maybe one of the other patrollers or admins will have the time/willpower to look at it. Anyone looking for a project? – Robin Hood (talk) 02:26, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Delete account
Hello i want my account data removed please (username, contributions, etc) Gazorpo (talk) 13:13, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, MediaWiki doesn't have that ability. What we can do, however, is to randomize your name and password so that nobody can access it. You can also remove any personal information from your preferences. In your case, we can also delete your sandbox, which seems to be where you've done most of your work. There's nothing we can do about your historical contributions to other pages on the wiki, however, and anyone viewing them could trace your new account name to them quite easily, so randomizing the name doesn't actually serve much purpose in the end. Please understand, it's not that we're unwilling, it's that we're unable. If you'd like to have your name and/or password randomized, please let us know and we'll be happy to do that. – Robin Hood (talk) 14:51, 25 March 2023 (UTC)

ESO Necrom PTS Release (Update 38)
-- Daveh (talk) 16:13, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Graph Extension Disabled
The Wikimedia Foundation released an announcement earlier today saying that the Graph extension had several significant security vulnerabilities and recommending that anyone using it disable the extension immediately. For tonight, I've gone ahead and done exactly that, but in the "simple" way that's going to leave raw <graph>
tags showing anywhere that there used to be actual graphs. Undoubtedly, this will mess with the formatting of any affected pages. Tomorrow, I'll create a fake extension to put in its place so that the graph tags can be hidden and categories created, similar to what WMF themselves are doing. For anyone who's interested, the announcement and bug report thread are here, though the technical details are hidden from public view and access to those threads is tightly restricted. – Robin Hood (talk) 05:05, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- Update: the replacement extension is in place. For now, any use of
<graph>
will be replaced by a blank and categorized into Category:Pages with disabled graphs (the same category name as MediaWiki defaults to). We can change that behaviour fairly easily if desired, like displaying a link to an explanation or a link to the category.
- We should also consider whether we want to continue including graphs at all. They do add value to the pages they're on, and I know Dcsg put in a lot of work on them, but my concern is that once Graph is fixed, it'll probably only be fixed for more recent versions of MediaWiki, which means it may take quite a bit of work to get it working again. Right now, graphs are only used in Blades and Legends space, so I'm wondering if we want to tear the band-aid off while it's still early. On the other hand, there may be other places we could put it to use, in which case I don't want to suggest removing it unnecessarily. – Robin Hood (talk) 01:03, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Username change (2)
Hello, I would like to change my username to Nilwendil if it's possible. Thank you for your help. — Unsigned comment by Doctor Gradus (talk • contribs) at 08:39 on 23 April 2023 (UTC)
- Done! I didn't notice it until too late, but if an account has no edits, you can just create a new account and abandon the old one. There's typically little point in moving an account with no prior edits. – Robin Hood (talk) 19:45, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
I removed an advertisement at Category talk:Lore-People-Nede. Not sure what action usually follows, so figured I'd leave it here. Mindtrait0r (talk) 23:04, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
Series of new pages
A whole bunch of pages were just created under the Talk: namespace which I haven't seen before. They seem to be the product of a mistake by the user who created them and should be moved to the Skyrim Mod: space or deleted outright to be consolidated to a single page. - Thanks Robin! I'd do it myself (I've done far more repetitive edits before), but... eh.... I don't have the best track record with page moves. Maybe a skill for a later date, but for now and with so many, better leave it to the machines. Much obliged. Mindtrait0r (talk) 00:04, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

MediaWiki Upgrade to 1.30
The wiki will be upgraded to 1.30 this Wednesday, 5 July at 9AM EST. While there is no expected downtime there is a database upgrade that will take 10-20 minutes and might impact edits (and possibly views). Look here for updates in the upgrade progress. Notes on the upgrade can be found at User:Daveh/Wiki_Upgrade_1.30. Post any upgrade related issues in this topic below. -- Daveh (talk) 15:16, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

- Noticing an issue with the {{Card}} template popup not displaying correctly when hovered over: example. —Legoless (talk) 14:50, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
-
- This seems to be only for certain cards. If I hover over those on the doc page, they work fine. – Robin Hood (talk) 15:01, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- That card's popup image does not exist. I reran the popup image creation script to update all images from the card database. I don't see the "Death Scythe" card there however and its not in the card database (https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Special:LegendsCardData). If someone updates the card database with the missing card I can rerun the script to generate the popup images. -- Daveh (talk) 21:38, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

- The download links are not displaying properly for DF:Unofficial_Daggerfall_FAQ, MW:Plugins and MW:Propylon_Chamber; they're showing up as [{{{url}}} ]. Salamangkero (talk) 15:30, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

- This is a MetaTemplate bug, possibly related to the #save problem I was mentioning in Discord. I'm looking into it. – Robin Hood (talk) 16:32, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Fixed. If things still show up incorrectly, you'll probably have to purge the page and/or any pages it gets data from. For those following the technical details, I'll also be posting about it in the Discord technical channel in a minute. – Robin Hood (talk) 04:49, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, <3 . I seem to have lost access to all my UESPEditor builds I have made because of that change - is it possible for me to regain access to them? Inb4: if not possible - then okay, I'll manage. The change itself is more important to me than access to these builds. Thanks again
- I didn't realize that we have to do that manually currently, but the site owner has fixed that now as well. Let us know if you have any further issues. – Robin Hood (talk) 15:13, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Affiliation Request
Hello, my name is Korra II. I'm a founding admin of the Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki (MDFW). I'm a long-time reader, selcom contributor. I wanted to reach out regarding affiliation with my wiki.
Our goal is to be the one-stop shop for Mystery Dungeon. The Mystery Dungeon Library of Alexandria, if you will. We document lore, merch, anime shorts, manga, guidebooks, novellas, character lore, series history, early prototype content, interviews, and more. I've gone as far as to purchase the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer Pachinko machine to be the only site on the internet that properly documents it. While there are only a few of us, we're extremely passionate about our franchise. I've shut down, partnered with, or absorbed 8 different Mystery Dungeon wikis and a discord server to build this wiki, 4 of which were on Fand0m. That being said, I believe the only real way to deal with the Fand0m problem is through word of mouth and indie's supporting each other.
I'm unable to link to our affiliates, SEO and social media analytics or home page. However, there's only one MDFW, so we shouldn't be difficult to find. Thank you for your time and consideration. <3

- Thanks for the request! While a little outside our typical content we love to support other independent wikis so I've added it to our Affiliates page! -- Daveh (talk) 15:52, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
-
- Thank you, it genuinely means a lot. The UESP helped me get into Oblivion when I was struggling to understand it, and you guys are a large part of why I became a wiki editor. <3 Korra II A Royal (talk) 03:40, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
UESP 2024 Christmas Gifts
It's that time of year again and we're giving away 2024 Calendars and a set of four 9x12 posters to select groups of UESP staff and editors.
-
- Any admin/officer on any platform (wiki, forum, discord, ESO builds, etc...).
- All wiki editors with more than 100 edits in 2023 (you can check here).
You can submit your mailing address here.
Depending on how many extra posters/calendars we have left over we may loosen that last requirement a bit in the future. Thanks to everyone for a great 2023 and looking forward to another amazing year! -- Daveh (talk) 14:45, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Name change request
Please could I have my username changed from Presto to Jinks? That'll match the name of the Discord account I've still got access to, and hopefully stop pings to the one I don't! Thank you. - Presto (talk) 18:33, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
