MediaWiki Upgrade to 1.28

The wiki upgrade to 1.28 is tentatively scheduled for this Wednesday, 9 Feb 2021 sometime in the morning EST. The dev wiki has been running 1.28 for a few months now for testing. Look for more updates here and on Discord. -- Daveh (talk) 20:33, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

I've just gone over the list of changes between 1.27 and 1.28 and virtually everything is internal, so I don't expect users to notice much difference between the two. That said, MediaWiki's fond of deprecating/removing things, so I suspect we'll have the usual round of tools that break because they were using some really old code. Overall, though, I expect this one to go more smoothly than many of our other upgrades (he said, completely jinxing it). Robin Hood(talk) 23:53, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Upgrade

  • Stopping Job Runner -- We have to upgrade ElasticSearch for this upgrade so I'm stopping the job runner until that is completed. -- Daveh (talk) 14:19, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Database Upgraded -- Daveh (talk) 16:01, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Done --- All services should be back up and working under 1.28. -- Daveh (talk) 16:03, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Issues

  • Syntax Highlighter Plugin Not Working -- I couldn't get the syntax highlighter plugin working with ElasticSearch so it is currently disabled. -- Daveh (talk) 16:04, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Class 'Symfony\\Component\\Process\\ProcessBuilder -- Had to run composer install in extensions/SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi/ (assuming that fixed it). -- Daveh (talk) 16:27, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Pages Not Displayed Correctly -- The cause is unclear, but some pages temporarily lost access to some of the MetaTemplate data. This caused empty entries or template code like {{{cat}}} to be displayed. Purging the page fixes the problem. Robin Hood(talk) 17:35, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Working As Intended

  • Preferences Updated -- At some point (perhaps after viewing your preferences?), they may be automatically updated to use the Enhanced Editing Toolbar as well as enabling a few editing wizards. I believe this is intentional. The settings can be disabled by going into your preferences and unchecking the relevant items on the Editing tab. Robin Hood(talk) 17:59, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Page Protection Requested

For the past few days, an anonymous editor has repeatedly added erroneous information to the Oblivion:Under Leveling page. After the second edit, I politely explained to the user why their edit was incorrect with regards to the vanilla game and the likely source of the erroneous information, but the user apparently ignored both my post and my request to start a talk page topic before editing the page again, requiring yet another revert. Given 3RR, I believe at least Semi-Protection for the page would be appropriate at this point to prevent the incorrect information being added yet again. Thanks for your time! — Wolfborn(Howl) 01:52, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

I have semi-protected the page for one month. —Legoless (talk) 08:35, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Instagram

Our Instagram has grown considerably, to the point I'd like it listed on our sidebar. The link should be [1] and the displayed text should be "Instagram". A favicon similar to the previous ones should be uploaded and place next to the link in the same fashion. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 16:36, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Another maintenance task will be to update File:Sidebar.png once this is done. —Legoless (talk) 17:12, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

MetaTemplate Tracking Categories

As some of you are already aware, MediaWiki 1.35 and beyond have changed the default parser—the part of MediaWiki that turns what you type when editing into what you see when viewing. The new parser works on a fundamentally different principle and would break almost every page on the wiki if we ever went through with the upgrade. We're not alone in this; several other wikis have mentioned that they're facing similar issues and some extension designers have also complained that the new parser will break their extension in whole or in part. In our case, the vast majority of the issues arise from MetaTemplate, an extension developed by Nephele back in 2009.

While it seems likely that we'll have to upgrade no further than 1.34 in the short to medium term, it's possible that we'll have to abandon MetaTemplate in the long term. To that end, I've created a number of what are called "tracking categories"—categories maintained by the software itself rather than by users—so we know exactly what will break and what won't, categorized based on features that are likely be broken or salvageable as a group. You can find the parent category at MetaTemplate. The categories are already being populated as people edit pages, but I'll be triggering a forced update of all pages on the wiki some time soon. I expect some of the categories will number in the tens of thousands of pages by the time they're fully up to date, while other features are not widely used, so there will be less of an impact.

Those of you who have hidden categories enabled will be able to see which pages will be hit and in which ways. For those who don't but want to see the new categories, you can toggle them on by going into your preferences, then at the bottom, select the "Show hidden categories" check box and save. MediaWiki Upgrade 1.29

On the morning of 26 July I'll be upgrading the wiki to 1.29. There should be no service interruption but I will have to stop the search index updater for a bit so new/updated articles won't appear in the search during this time. -- Daveh (talk) 13:33, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

Request to change UESP username (2)

Hello! Just coming back after a long hiatus and was hoping to get my name changed to that of my main ES and online presence. If possible I would like to have it changed to 'Kaebus' . I believe I must have had that name in the past as when I search for the name by user it redirects to my current user page, if this is an issue that will cause the change to not be possible, do let me know. Thanks! — Cassian talk﴿ 18:28, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Done! I didn't know what would happen in this case myself, so I was curious to try. Apart from having to move your User and User talk pages manually (because the previous ones already existed) it went as expected. Robin Hood(talk) 02:55, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

That's done too. I don't know if it'll help, but later this afternoon, I'll go through my usual mass-spam checks and see if there are any range blocks possible to hopefully limit this sudden influx a little. Robin Hood(talk) 18:27, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
I blocked a bunch of IP ranges earlier, but none of them covered any of the above addresses. If IP addresses don't cover it, I'll keep an eye out for any patterns in the posts and we can block them via the abuse filter instead. Robin Hood(talk) 00:16, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

ESO Map Custom World Tiles

Thal-J brought up the idea of using his Accurate World Map add-on for the tiles in the ESO map. See below for the examples:

On one hand the accurate map is more detailed and looks better but on the other hand isn't "official". Was thinking we could add a toggle like we do the Skyrim Map for Day/Night tilesets but wanted to get other people's feedback on it. -- Daveh (talk) 14:37, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

I think as a toggle it is fine. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 14:47, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
A toggle sounds good. The fanmade maps are fantastic but it will confuse visitors if the default is not as the maps appear in-game. —Legoless (talk) 14:55, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Affiliation with the forked Independent Fallout Wiki

Greetings all!

I'm a community ambassador and editor for the newly established Independent Fallout Wiki. I've joined here today to discuss the potential of becoming affiliates with you folks. I can briefly tell you what an Affiliate means.

Affiliates are wikis or websites that do the following:

  • On your end, you add a new page, (I.E. UESP: Affiliates, Fallout Wiki: Affiliates) which would contain a small blurb about the site that's listed and vice versa for our side. In this case, on your end it would be the Independent Fallout Wiki and on our end, it would UESP!
  • On your end, a navbox or template would be added to the Main Page + any other pages where you find it might be appropriate and vice versa on our end. You can see an example of this on doomwiki.org, who have already partnered with us! This grants easy access to the sites, since their on the main page!
  • On both of our ends, we link back to each other on articles that relate more to UESP and vice versa with Fallout Wiki. We do have some minor Elder Scrolls Creation Club content, which we can link back to you guys.

And that's pretty much all there is to it! And plus, being able to just, be affiliates with a wiki such as UESP would be a big step for us in getting us recognized! We hope that you all can consider this prospect! :)

You can check our wiki at fallout.wiki.

C0NN1E (talk) 15:21, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

I have already had some communication with this team, and their wiki looks very well done, I welcome anything that allows independent wikis such as the UESP to help maintain that independence. I would like to see us affiliate with other independent wikis too as too many are being eaten up by Fandom. I fully support this proposal. Imperialbattlespire (talk) 15:36, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
Just a more general question but is this a remnant of the original The Vault Wiki that was later hosted on Gamepedia? It's a shame Gamepedia got merged into Fandom's monopoly, I always hoped we could partner with The Vault again. The editors and users of Wikia are never bad themselves, it's Fandom's inhuman tactics that make it hard to stay there. The Rim of the Sky (talk) 17:32, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
No, we're former editors from Nukapedia, not the Vault, though they merged a while ago. Our lead admin, Kate, was a former bureaucrat over at Nukapedia and she decided to form an independent fork, following a ban from Fandom due to some wiki drama early this year (Nukapedia keeps blaming Kate for a lot of issues for some reason). Things have been really smooth so far and I'm happy with the direction things are going. We'd love to work with you guys. C0NN1E (talk) 17:40, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
I've talked a bit with you and your community on Discord and I can say that you made quite a positive impression on me for this potential partnership. I think it's still important that we figure out what it would exactly entail, but it is a first step to integrate different Bethesda communities with each other (which is something we might seriously consider due to our project with the Starfield wiki). --Ilaro (talk) 20:59, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

Odd Edits on Shezzar and Lorkhan-adjacent Pages

There's been some odd edits on the Shezzar page and Lorkhan-Adjacent pages by various IPs which might be the same person. It has even gone far enough that citations are being edited from the original text to include things not said on the original citation to support their claims (example) I am unsure Shezzar and Lorkhan's etc full range of citations, but could not find references to statements of titles like "God of Mankind" and "Father of Mankind". Seeing as how citations are being edited to support claims, I doubt that the rest edits made on the article are accurate and do not have enough time to check their other references to see if the other claims are accurate, or if any other citations have been edited to support claims. Zebendal (talk) 21:22, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

I neglected to post an update on this at the time, but earlier, I semi-protected Shezzar for a week. I didn't notice any other recent problematic edits, but if there are any, please let us know and I or one of the other admins will protect or (range-)block as needed. Being lorephobic, I leave it to others to decide what information is worth keeping and what's not. AKB went through everything we could find from any of those IP ranges earlier, so hopefully the only stuff left will be things that are either debateable or outright supported by lore. He also mentioned that Lore:Nede may take a bit of untangling. Robin Hood(talk) 02:45, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
Alright thank you for the update! - Zebendal (talk) 02:47, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
The IP editor went right back to editing after the page protection, but on Lore:Shor this time, which I took to mean that they were well aware their edits weren't inappropriate, so I didn't go through the normal warn-then-block procedure. Since they've been changing IPs fairly regularly, I gave them a one-week range block on the address range they're using most and left a note on the talk page of the last IP they edited from. There's a second range that a small handful of their edits have come from which I haven't blocked for the moment, but we can if need be. I try to avoid blocking too much, though, since the wider the block, the more likely it is that a legitimate IP editor will get caught by it. Robin Hood(talk) 04:28, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
I had placed a warning earlier on the 14th on one of the IP's talk pages. —Legoless (talk) 12:08, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
It is happening again.Zebendal (talk) 09:34, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
I've blocked the range for a month, and in case they circumvent that (they've been seen from other ranges on occasion) or they start at it again as soon as the block expires, I also semi-protected the two pages they edited for three months. We can take additional actions as needed. Robin Hood(talk) 10:19, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
The editor has returned, at this point lock Shezzar from being edited by IPs. We did it for the Naemon page, we can also do it for this page.Zebendal (talk) 15:01, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

Lock Fishing and Fishing (activity) pages

That page tends to attract vandals that keep editing the number 69 to others. Its been through many reverts combined. Please lock it for registered users only. - Zebendal (talk) 00:35, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

I'm not opposed to the idea—we've done it for a short period in the past—but at least based on today's posts, it seems like people just aren't reading the notes at the end of the line. For now, I've added the link to the HTML note as well...I even considered splitting it into 6<!--(note)-->9 so you almost had to read the note in between. I thought that might be pushing it, though. Let's see how it goes and if things are still problematic in the future, we can permanently semi-protect the page. Robin Hood(talk) 05:36, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
