Jakarn in his cell
A man named Jakarn was thrown into the Grave, a prison below Headman Bhosek's Palace. Apparently the headman of the town accused him of stealing a valuable gem.

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Enter and escape The Grave with Jakarn.
  2. Meet up with Jakarn at the mine.
  3. Retrieve the gem.
  4. Speak with Moglurkgul.
  5. Find Jakarn again in Port Hunding.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Captain Kaleen has offered you a cut of the take from her next contract if you recruit some help. She mentions three crewmember options, one being Jakarn. The problem is, Jakarn has been thrown into The Grave in Port Hunding for stealing a gem. You have found him and freed him from his cell, but he will have to return the stolen gem in order to be able to join your crew.

Helping Jakarn Escape[edit]

Open his cell door and follow him back to the entrance of the Grave. He'll stop you from exiting the way you came in because of Irien and some guards, so go to the room to the east of the entrance and exit via the ladder. Once outside, talk to Jakarn again and he'll ask you to help him get a gem back from the goblins at Bhosek's abandoned mine. Jakarn has little respect for the Goblins; when asked why he gave something valuable to them, he responds:

"I figure, if you want something kept safe, give it to the Goblins.
They'll watch it for free, they're too stupid to trade it, and they'll kill anyone who tries to take it.

Jakarn pressures you into helping him:

"Here's the thing. You went through a lot of trouble to free me, right? There's no way you'll let me get eaten by Goblins. So you, my good friend, will follow me to their mine. Yeah?"

Head north on the path and, when Jakarn disappears, go through Dogeater Goblin Camp and up to the entrance of the mine. He will be waiting for you outside the mine entrance. Upon entering the mine, he tells you that the Goblins store everything on the upper level. Then he disappears into a cloud of smoke.

As you make your way through the mine, there is a large cavern with Goblins, which you can either engage or sneak around by going to the left. After this, go to the west up a slope and you'll see Jakarn standing at the top, outside another door. He will again disappear in a cloud of smoke, taunting you about keeping up with him and about him having more kills than you. Follow the path up and go through the door; you'll come out on a raised walkway.

Gornog Guarding the Gem

Steal Back the Gem[edit]

At the end of this path, talk to Jakarn and he'll tell you that the gem is through the next door in the Goblin Mine. He tells you to go through the door and he will kill the Goblins on the scaffolding while you grab the Gem. He says it's in a chest on the floor. He says that, after stealing the gem, he wants you to go through the passage on the far side of the mine and meet him outside. If something goes wrong and you don't see him outside the mine, he says you should regroup with him at the tavern in town.

When you go through the door to the mine, it opens into a huge room. Some Durzogs are in here, along with the goblin leader, Gornog, who is guarding the gem in a chest straight ahead. Defeat him and open the chest to find a giant red gemstone. Turn around and go southeast, exiting out of the mine to Stros M'Kai on the top of a cliff. If you jump far enough out, you can land in the water without taking damage; or you can climb down.

Speak with Moglurkgul[edit]

Moglurkgul

To the west, an Orc named Moglurkgul will want to talk to you, so speak to her. She will ask if you saw a "scummy Breton" and you ask what his name is.

"Jakarn. He's a liar and a thief. He stole the gem from Headman Bhosek.
Now, if the gem came back, Bhosek might let him live. Can you help me, or not?"

You can answer this one of two ways:

Haven't seen him.
"Now that's just too bad. If you do run into him again, tell him that if we catch him, he's dead."
Well, I did find this gem ….
"I knew you were a smart one. Smarter than Jakarn. You just saved his life.
If you see him again, tell him to leave this island and never come back."

Regroup with Jakarn[edit]

The Screaming Mermaid Tavern

Now go to Port Hunding and find the Screaming Mermaid Tavern. You'll find Irien outside, crying. Talk to her to find out that Jakarn cheated on her and is inside the tavern right now with another girl.

"I overheard him telling a Redguard girl he'd whisk her off to Sentinel. That he was a ship captain. She swooned like a fool. Like I did."

Entering the inn, you'll find Jakarn to the left of the entrance, by the innkeeper. He's leaning against the wall, arrogantly flipping a coin. Your conversation will depend on what was done with the gem:

Handed over the Gem:
Kept the Gem:
"Glad to see you made it out."
I met Moglurkgul outside the cave. She's got the gem now.
"Well that's a shame. Still, getting Moglurkgul off my trail is a good trade. She's relentless.
I'll be honest. I'm just a little hurt. But since you saved my life, we'll call it even."
"Hey there, glad to see you made it out."
Here's the gem you stole.
"Hey, now. The headman stole it first. And you brought it back to me, didn't you?
Thanks, good-looking."

You tell Jakarn he owes you for freeing him and that Captain Kaleen needs his help. He tells you he'll join the crew and gives you Jakarn's Machete and some gold as a reward.

Notes[edit]

  • Despite Jakarn mentioning he unlocked the door of the Goblin Mine, the first area of the mine (but not the second) can be freely accessed before starting this quest.
