High King Durac was betrayed by his advisor Virmaril

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

When you reach the entrance of Skyreach Catacombs you will see Crusader Dalamar who warns you about the darkness infesting the catacombs and the awakened dead. He was hoping to consecrate the catacombs by himself, but could not manage it alone. When you ask him what could be behind this disturbance, he mentions a legend about an Elven necromancer Virmaril. Although Dalamar thought this was a mere myth, he admits that inside the catacombs he heard a voice beckoning him deeper into the cave and that could indeed be Virmaril himself.

Enter the catacombs and make your way forward, defeating numerous Scaled Court zombies and skeletons that roam in the area. The door to the Lower Catacombs is straight ahead, however it is locked so you need to find a way to open it before proceeding. There are two encounters you need to clear in order to open the door—the Fallen Kings and the Gravelord. The Fallen Kings is an even-type fight located in the northernmost room. You will first need to defeat eight fallen Nedic kings and then fight High King Durac while the previous fallen kings will reappear (in weakened form) to assist him. The second boss needed to open the door is Gravelord, a powerful bone colossus that can be found in the southernmost room.

The door to the lower part of the Catacombs will now be open. Enter it and make your way through a gauntlet of skeletons and Nedic spirits. Deeper inside the catacombs you will find the door to the Tomb of the Dead Watchers. Another fight waits you there as you need to defeat three watchers—Armok, Garalan and Shavmar—to be able to continue forward.

You will finally arrive at the gate to Virmaril's prison. The gate is warded by souls and can be opened after you defeat numerous spirits, charging the nearby soul gems. Once this event is over, the door to Virmaril unlocks by itself.

Virmaril is a lich assisted by several Wraiths during the fight. Watch out for his Soul Cage ability which can kill you very quickly. The Wraiths will cast Winter's Reach which can also be deadly if coupled with other damage.

When Virmaril is defeated, return to Crusader Dalamar to inform him of Virmaril's defeat and collect your reward. Dalamar concludes that although Virmaril has been defeated he should stay at the catacombs in case something disturbs the peace at Skyreach Catacombs in the future.

Notes[edit]

  • The Fallen Kings cannot be targeted with attacks until they have fully completed their rising animation, despite them appearing targetable during the process.
  • None of the Fallen Kings, with exception of Durac, have a chance of dropping loot when slain.
  • The chest that appears after slaying the three watchers can contain gear from sets outside of Craglorn.

Bugs[edit]

  • Virmaril the Betrayer's dialogue upon entering the Cavern of Lost Souls has no audio to match the subtitles. ?

* Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the game and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
