question[edit]

do guards respawn? — Unsigned comment by Bori85 (talkcontribs) on 17 February 2008

Yes. They will respawn after the usual three days - as long as you aren't too close to their starting point (in the same cell). –RpehTCE 12:31, 16 February 2008 (EST)

Images[edit]

I think this page would be greatly benefited by images of each type of guard, as neither this page nor the page devoted to the guard armor have any pictures of either. Chunk of Ham 18:44, 19 January 2009 (EST)

Health[edit]

How much health does a normal guard have? — Unsigned comment by 68.41.145.24 (talk) on 29 May 2009

If it was simply a matter of a few numbers, it would already be on the page. Unfortunately, since guards are leveled NPCs, their health changes every time they level up, depending on a various factors and on their Attributes, which also level up. So really, it would come out as a huge and complex equation; which you are free to calculate if you wish. --SerCenKing Talk 12:21, 29 May 2009 (EDT)

Imperial Watch Civil War[edit]

I was walking in the Temple District of the Imperial City, and a Mythic Dawn cultist ran out of her house and started attacking people. The Imperial Watch arrived and dispatched her, but then they started fighting amongst themselves! There's now several Imperial Watchmen killing each other, and a few innocent civilians even died in the crossfire. Ongar the World-Weary 02:22, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

This happens all the time. If one soldier accidentally hits another they can end up fighting. Also happens with foresters. –rpehTCE 07:10, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

This has been bugging me.[edit]

The armor worn by the Palace Guards and Guard Captains, why cant you take it off them, and is there any way at all to obtain it? — Unsigned comment by 67.167.229.227 (talk) on 14 September 2009

No you can't obtain them (without the use of mods). The armor pieces are set as Unplayable internally, meaning they are invisible in inventories (and thus you can't take them). --Timenn-<talk> 12:52, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Ah, thanks :), too bad though, they are pretty cool. — Unsigned comment by 67.167.229.227 (talk) on 18 September 2009

Glitch (not really but idk what to call it)[edit]

It is impossible to head shot a guard. Even up close you without them moving and you aim at the top of the guards head, it shows the arrow hits mid chest level. If done to a shop keeper or another npc it its them in the head and kills them instantly. — Unsigned comment by Forkorpl8 (talkcontribs) on 20 December 2009

This happens with all NPCs if it's not the kill shot, meaning only the kill shot will show up on the head. I think it's because it would be stupid for a character with 5 arrows in his head to be walking around ;) --Nacht 06:39, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Corpse Checking[edit]

What is the purpose of the corpse checking animation that most guards do? When they kneel down next to a body. --DKong27 Talk 14:19, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Just an extra animation to make them seem more guard-like. Some citizens also do it, for example, Alessia Ottus. --Arch-Mage MattTalk 15:38, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Glitch or what?[edit]

In the city of Anvil, I broke into the castle for stealing. I was caught by a guard, so I ran to the balcony, I jumped down into the sea and I managed to leave behind the guards. I reached with my own bare foot (no fast-travel) the Valley View Camp, in the Imperial Reserve. I slept there, and, at 3.00 AM I was woke up by an Anvil Guard (!!!) who told me I was under arrest. I had to kill him. I ran away to Nayon Camp (very very far away, in the Nibenay) and there I didn't have any surprises. My question is: how did a single Anvil Guard managed to follow me? Did he stalked me :)? --195.60.143.253 22:27, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

What is the effect of their spell?[edit]

I usually don't see guards casting spells, but I have seen it happen a few times. The only guard I can confirm that cast a spell on me was a Cheydinhal guard and it may have been the essential one that guards that one dude's house. I was behind the houses with only that guard, nobody else was around, and I didn't continue to get hurt once he was dead (or possibly unconscious, I forget). He did the spell-casting animation and it made red rings glow around me. I think it may have been damage fatigue because I fell down from it (went flying actually). What was the spell?— Unsigned comment by 98.28.159.122 (talk) on 4 August 2010

Skingrad Guard dialogue[edit]

I've been to Skingrad before with my character but never spoken to the guards. The first time I spoke to the Skingrad Guard he referred to me as a stranger, asked me to be polite and keep my weapon sheathed. I'm sure he also referred to Dion. I can't remember the exact dialogue but wondered if it was anything to do with Skingrad specifically. I know that Dion seeks you out when you ask around about Glarthir but I've yet to run in to either of them. HWx 15:35, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

I believe the one you're referring to is this: "You're new here in Skingrad? Fine. I'll make sure the captain knows we have a stranger in town. Please keep your weapons sheathed, and use your best manners. We're a bit suspicious of strangers here. Don't give us anything to be suspicious about, will you, please?" Guards Are Not Respawning?[edit]

Hey, I know the first question was if guards respawn, but the guards on my save are not. It's the weirdest thing; The guards used to respawn, but then i went on a huge killing rampage with the Cowl of Nocturnal on. The rampage was really huge. I went to every city and killed as many guards as could before they stopped coming. I even went into the barracks and killed everyone. But now it sucks becuase I want to kill people but I dont want to kill citizens because they could be a shopkeeper or whatever. And This type of thing has happened before, but usually i can just go far away from the city and wait about three days. I've waited about twenty days this time and they still haven't respawned. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you fix it. — Unsigned comment by Spokaneskater (talkcontribs) at 22:04 on 4 December 2010

Just shows you the consequences of rampaging across Cyrodiil. Next time don't go on sprees. Kinvalor75 10:42, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Rumor[edit]

I was in the market district and was bored. So I started hitting people with fireballs. I got arrested, of course, and went back to the market district after I spent time in jail. And two imperial watch men were talking. One of them said, "Did you see that argonian here the other day, blasting fireballs at everyone?" Btw my character was an argonian. Is this a coincidence or does a guard say it when it happens? For example if you were a breton casting frost balls would a guard say that too?— Unsigned comment by 74.82.64.36 (talk) at 21:21 on 31 October 2011

That's a coincidence, and just part of their possible dialogue when talking to eachother. Though it's nice to see Oblivion AI getting it coincidentally right at times! Wolok gro-Barok 21:42, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Leyawiin Oblivion Gate[edit]

Shouldn't the Dead Respawning Leyawiin Guard be put under glitches? Because he starts off as dead but he respawns and lives again. — Unsigned comment by 121.215.144.64 (talk) at 12:13 on 1 February 2012

I think you're supposed to assume that the guard has been replaced by someone else...someone who just happens to look a lot like the dead guy. Since all guards do this, I don't see it as being a glitch. Robin Hoodtalk 05:34, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Strange guard in Leyawiin[edit]

One of the Guards in Leyawiin is very weird: He stands around one position, cannot move, even when killed and reanimated, he has a deformed face that never moves, and he dies with one hit. I've encountered him with more than one character, so this isn't a one-time deal. Has anyone else experienced this? Bauglir100 21:39, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

If you give me his exact location, I can check in-game and in the CS if you want. Robin Hoodtalk 02:52, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
He usually stands outside the Leyawiin Oblivion Gate, but he has appeared near the entrance of the Guard's barracks, and at the Eastern gates of the city. He is also completely unarmed for some reason. Bauglir100 04:33, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
He's appeared for me too, but he is able to move, it's just his face doesn't move at all in response when the player starts dialogue with him. He's generated always (as far as I know) when the Allies for Bruma quest begins, and can be found outside the Leyawiin gates, and sometimes around the Oblivion gate that has opened up as a result of the related quest. I haven't attempted killing him though Helenaannevalentine 04:57, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, he can move from one cell to the other, but he can't walk around or fight. At least this happens for me. Bauglir100 05:26, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
It is weird, cause maybe the cause of why he's 'deformed' in such a way, is because he may be the guard specified that is dead around the Oblivion Gate. But I never came across any dead city guards around that Oblivion Gate (I've only come across the dead horse), so maybe he somehow respawned, and this is the cause of the 'deformation'. But then if he was supposedly meant to be dead, why would he have the standard Guard dialogue if he's the guard that's intended to be dead found here? Helenaannevalentine 05:49, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Your theory's bang on, Helena. He's supposed to be the dead guard lying outside the gate, but something's causing him to become one of the living dead. Looking in the Construction Set, he's set to Respawn, so initially I thought that on its own might be doing it, but it looks like there's something more to it than that, because I tried waiting the usual three days and he never reappeared. He appears to have been entirely disabled in one game I loaded, yet he appears in a later game. My best guess at this point is that there's some script that's reenabling him at a later part of the main quest. He also has what looks to be a standard guard AI package, so the behaviour Bauglir's seeing where he moves from one location to the other but then just stands there makes perfect sense—he's "patrolling" and what not, just like any other guard...or at least he's doing the best his dead body can do. ;) The odd-looking face is the same in the Construction Set—I suspect that was a deliberate design since he was dead. Robin Hoodtalk 07:21, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
I had a feeling it had something to do with it, the moment I saw the topic above mine. Before that, I thought that one particular guard just had a mesh problem or something. I think that this deserves a mention on the article: not only is the initially dead guard respawning, but he's respawning...wrong. What do you think? Bauglir100 14:44, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, it makes sense to me to add it in a Bugs section. In most cases, Bugs sections are done as second-level headers (== Bugs ==) for the entire page, but in this instance, I'd make it a third-level header under Leyawiin. I've just composed a rather lengthy e-mail and am feeling a bit brain-dead, not to mention it was your observation in the first place, so at the risk of sounding lazy, I'm quite content at this point to let you add the info. ;) Robin Hoodtalk 23:44, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Please can we get an image of this guard in question? Dragon Guard  (talk) 22:03, 2 January 2015 (GMT)

Guard Dialogue[edit]

==Unique Dialogue==

===Greetings===

  • "Well met, citizen. I see few new faces these days, it seems. With the Emperor's murder, a darkness has fallen upon all of Cyrodiil. "
  • "Speak quickly! I have no time for mindless blather!"
  • "I welcome a friendly face in these dark times. How can I be of assistance?"
  • "When I speak to someone like you -- a noble citizen of the Empire -- it reminds me what I'm fighting for. I salute you!"
  • "Make it fast, dreg! What little patience I have is wearing thin...."
  • "I did not join the Imperial Legion to engage in small talk with rabble like you. If you have something to say, say it."
  • "Hello, citizen. I hope you're faring well in these difficult times."
  • "Hail, citizen. I speak for the Emperor. Or... at least I did..."
  • "Greetings, magister! How can I be of service?"
  • "Hail, Good Mage! Welcome to the Arcane University! Is there anything I can help you with?"
  • "Pfft. If you weren't authorized to be here I'd conjure up an Atronach to freeze your blood cold. Watch your step."
  • "This humble Legion soldier is at your service. How can I help a fellow citizen of the Empire?"
  • "I don't see many wanderers out here in the wild. But you look like you can take care of yourself."
  • "By the gods, the snow's coming down! What brings you out here in the cold, citizen?"
  • "Well now, I didn't expect to see anyone else foolish enough to venture out here in the rain! How do you fare, citizen?"
  • "Any citizen who takes the time to talk to a member of the Legion is okay in my book. With all that's happened, it's good to know we're appreciated. "
  • "State your business, citizen."
  • "You have a death wish, citizen? Put that weapon away. Now." (If your weapon is drawn)
  • "Mind telling me why you're sneakin' about? I don't think I have to tell you what the Legion thinks of thieves, now do I?"
  • "You. I've seen your kind before. You've got blood on your hands. Keep your blade sheathed, you murdering bastard, or I'll put you down myself." (If you've murdered someone)
  • "Bet you think you're somethin' huh? You call yourself a citizen of the Empire? No respect for order, no respect for law. You make me sick." (High Infamy)
  • "Ah, it's good to see you, citizen! Oh yes, I know who you are. You've become something of a legend in these parts!" (High Fame)

  • "Hail, citizen! It's not often I see another rider out here on the roads. Times being what they are."

  • "Please make it quick, citizen. My patrol awaits, and a Legion steed can't keep still for very long..."
  • "Trouble?"

  • "You're out late sir."

  • "The Mythic Dawn murdered the Emperor and led those damn Daedra right into the heart of the Empire! They'll pay for their treachery! "
  • "The Kvatch Oblivion Gate has been closed! Don't you understand what that means? We can beat the bastards!"
  • "It's true what everyone's saying -- Kvatch is lost. The Daedra, they swarmed in.... The Town Guard never had a chance."
  • "Bruma has been saved! It's true! Let's see how the Daedra do without their big Siege Machine, or their so-called "Great Gate"! Ha ha ha ha ha!*
  • "Don't you even care what's happening? Bruma has been saved! The Great Gate has been closed! There is hope for us all, whether you like it or not.*
  • "The Emperor's heir lives! The bloodline is unbroken! Long live Martin Septim!*
  • "The tide is turning, my friend. Bruma has been saved, and Martin Septim has claimed his birthright! Soon, all of Oblivion will tremble in fear!*
  • "The tide is turning. Bruma has been saved, and Martin Septim has claimed his birthright! It's time for every citizen to do their part... even you.*
  • "It's over, citizen. The crisis has ended. But at what cost? We are an Empire without an Emperor. The future is uncertain, at best.*
  • "Have you not heard? The Oblivion crisis has ended! Martin Septim gave his own life to destroy the Daedra horde! We are victorious!*
  • "The Emperor is dead, and so are his heirs. We're a Legion without a leader. The Blades were trusted with our Lord's protection... and they failed.*
  • "Truth is, the Legion doesn't know who was behind the Emperor's murder. We've already ruled out the Dark Brotherhood. So is this something... worse?*
  • "Emperors have been assassinated before, but this time... I don't know. It's different. Can't you feel it? A shadow has fallen across all of Tamriel.*

  • "You dare oppose the might of the Imperial Legion?"
  • "Remember the Emperor!"
  • Note: Until it is sorted - It will go on the talk page - Just for now.

If guards were to meet legion foresters, they would attack each other, also, palace guards armor can't be looted — Unsigned comment by Cantbeonforums (talkcontribs) at 12:33 on 13 February 2021
