Grimkell was a powerful Atmoran sorcerer in the Merethic Era. As a member of Ysgramor's Five Hundred Companions,[1] he took part in the Return, driving the Snow Elves from Skyrim.[2][3] He searched for the hidden path to Sovngarde, the Nordic afterlife, betraying his fellow Companions in an attempt to create one for himself.[1]

History[edit]

The standing stones of Brodir Grove, created by Grimkell's magic.

Grimkell was among the Five Hundred Companions of Atmora rallied by Ysgramor after the Night of Tears. He took part in the cleansing of the Snow Elves from Skyrim. Sometime after the Return, Grimkell, along with four Companions, Nikulas, Hunroor, Erlendr, and Ulfgar, travelled to the island of Solstheim in search of the path to Sovngarde. Although the group felt they were getting close to an answer, Grimkell decided to betray them and create a portal to Sovngarde himself.[1]

Grimkell set up an ambush for the four at Brodir Grove, assailing them with powerful magic. His magic connected with all four of his former allies, turning all but Ulfgar into stone. Despite being hit with the spell, Ulfgar retained his human form, becoming a living stone - however, this was not Grimkell's intention. Ultimately, Ulfgar was able to kill Grimkell. Having been granted immortality by Grimkell's spell, Ulfgar would spend several thousand years wandering Tamriel in search of the path to Sovngarde, unsuccessfully.[1] It would not be until 3E 427 that, with the help of an adventurer, Ulfgar would find the path to the afterlife, dying in the process and adding a fourth stone to Brodir Grove.[4][5]
