Quest ID[edit]

What is the Id for this quest? — Unsigned comment by Necrosin (talkcontribs) at 01:34 on 20 November 2011 (UTC)

It is DA06. I've readded it to the page. Thanks for pointing that out. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 01:34, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Refusing Yamarz[edit]

What happens if you refuse to fight the giant for Yamaraz? I chose the other option and forgot to make a save to check the alternate. — Unsigned comment by Bwross (talkcontribs) at 15:56 on 20 November 2011 (UTC)

He dies against the giant in one hit. If you tell him to do it himself, and the giant dies while Yamarz is still alive, he defaults to the "I have to kill you so no one will find out" scenario. I even told him to fight the giant then opened up the console and put in 223f7.kill 3bc27" (or this specific giant gets killed by Chief Yamarz), and he still acted as if I had killed the giant for him. There seems to be no way to have the chief survive or not betray you.69.214.46.27 20:40, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

The Orcs Attack Me[edit]

I don't know why but every time I drop off the daedra heart and troll fat the orcs attack me when I follow Atub. Babytoke 00:25, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm not positive, but it may be because you aren't considered blood-kin among them, causing them to attack you when you attempt to enter the settlement (which may be a bug when regarding this quest). I'd try doing the miscellaneous quest at Dushnikh Yal, then come back and hand in the ingredients again. If you've already completed that, then it's a bug and I'm not sure what to do. Sorry. --Dragon1300 00:32, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Not sure if its related but when I did the quests the orcs decided to kill one of the orcs? are they suppose to randomly kill each other? — Unsigned comment by 80.192.230.46 (talk) at 10:57 on 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Had the same issue, tried several things but they finally stopped when I let them chase me to the orc tomb by the Dwemer ruin, and a dragon attacked there (a Sanguine Dragon added by Diverse Dragons Collection). Once I'd killed the dragon, for some reason they went to attacking my horse and I decided to let them, since I had over 100k gold and could easily buy another, they attacked it til it stumbled and then bam, no more hostility, quest went by without a hitch.

Bugs[edit]

So I'm on 360 and Malacath's dialogue at Giant's Grove seems to be bugged. If I kill both the Giant and Yamarz Malacath says the Giants killed Yamarz and I killed the Giant, the reverse if I let Yamarz get killed by the Giant first. — Unsigned comment by 71.198.52.172 (talk) at 00:12 on 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Referring to Shasowmere being dead after the quest: I also found my horse lying dead, but I found a damaged Frostbite Spider near it. Just to mention. — Unsigned comment by 109.125.122.188 (talk) at 08:09 on 21 December 2011 (UTC)
I am on the PS3 and after I killed the second giant, Yarmaz attacked Lydia (the housecarl) and then me. Very irritating. Went outside and back in - Yamarz is nowhere to be seen! — Unsigned comment by 86.29.225.221 (talk) at 00:15 on 16 February 2012 (UTC)

missing volendrung[edit]

No. Its gone will need console command to get it back from everything I've seen.--Bwross 04:25, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
when i get back there the second time, another giant attack largashbur. is this due to me not taking volendrung the first time?--120.165.2.20 04:21, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Badly bugged[edit]

Well i arrived at the stronghold, I was an orc. The gates were locked and there was no one there, no giant no nothing. I used the alternate entrance, and everyone was in the longhouse. I spoke to the shaman and she said they would never forget what I've done for them, but I have done nothing, im on 360 any ideas Emzi43 12:43, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Do you meet the level requirements? The gate is locked and the camp is empty until you reach level 9 //MrL 23:03, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Im also having the above problem and can't use the setstage command to fix as i haven't began the quest - David — Unsigned comment by 86.170.78.227 (talk) at 18:42 on 12 May 2012
The giant attack only triggers after you've been given the main quest to go to High Hrothgar for the first time. If you use a mod that delays the main storyline you will have to activate the main quest and reach that point. If you go before that you will find no one outside. If force your way inside the village, all the NPCs will be inside the longhouse and getting inside will make them hostile(or after you get out) thus making the quest unobtainable. My advice is not to enter the village before either the giant attacks or you find the corpses outside. 24.139.111.144 18:57, 22 October 2012 (GMT)

I've not returned the Dragonstone yet. No mods just 1170: It's about 6AM, Largashbur was unlocked and under attack. Despatched giant to be recycled and for my efforts told to go away by Ugor. Atub was not present but was standing looking down on us from the Darklight tower plateau. At ~ 7:35am Atub vanished, only to appear from the western side of the longhouse. Where everything returned to the script. I don't have the CK so I can't verify this but I suspect Atub is scheduled to stand on the plateau at night, (I've seen and spoken to Atub there on other run throughs), hence others reporting the NPCs absence. Addressing Atub having Northwatch captain's key. For Atub to go to and down from the plateau, theye would need the Darklight tower key, a simple mistake to make, and as it's not really used, wouldn't be picked up.

Orcs kill Yamarz[edit]

I left Yamarz outside of the cave and went in and cleared it (and killed the giant). When I went back to the camp Yamarz wasn't there. I waited an hour and when he got back to the camp the orcs began attacking him. Is this a bug or does Yamarz's faction change after you kill the giant? BrenMan 94 05:31, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't know for certain, but that sounds correct. • JATalk 05:39, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Moved[edit]

Spoken to orcs outside gate. They had killed giant already. Didnt fint Atub. Since then all arcs located inside main building and unable to find Atub. Tried some relevant advice above with no change. Killed subsiquent giants outside gate but no change. No quest entry in quest logs. - aditional - I decided to get the ingredients anyway. Upon returning a dragon attacked and Atub alone was present and helped me fight the dragon. Speaking to her after killing the dragon proceded the quest as expected. Ugor is dead on arrival and I can't find atub[edit]

So I killed the giant attacking largashbur, then found ugor's body...nobody in the courtyard and although there were four or five people in the longhouse, atub is nowhere to be found...help! — Unsigned comment by 2.120.213.75 (talk) at 12:55 on 24 May 2012

Apparently, Ugor dying is quite a common occurrence, but it shouldn't affect how the quest progresses, as Atub will still speak to you normally. If she isn't around, I'd recommend either fast travelling away and then returning, or re-loading your last save before Urog is killed. Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 13:19, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
At least twice, I found Ugor dead after defeating the giant(s), and Atub was up on the guard tower on the right side of the entrance gate. She did not come looking for me, I had to find her. I spoke to her and could start the quest that way. --JR (talk) 04:40, 2 October 2012 (GMT)

A slightly different bug to what other people appear to be having.[edit]

After making our way through the cave and exiting to the Grove, Yamarz disappears and cannot be found (and so never asks me to kill the giant myself); the quest arrow locates him somewhere to the east (although it appears to be south on the world map) and player.moveto puts me in an endless gray space, like high school. I can kill the giant myself, take the hammer, and get given the goal to return to the stronghold - but the "Protect Yamarz" goal is still active in the journal. It appears that I can end the quest this way, with the orcs acting as though the giants killed him, so I guess all I'm missing is the satisfaction of seeing him die & whatever loot is on his body...

Reloading didn't stop this from happening, and neither did exiting to the Grove before or after he did. 124.168.71.29 00:09, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

also, now I think of it - Atub was not actually at the stronghold when I returned with the ingredients prior to this part of the mission, but the arrow showed her SE near the old tower where you find Illia - the quest marker seemed to indicate she was inside, so I entered, cleared the tower and emerged at the top, only to find that she'd moved back to the stronghold. Returning to the stronghold put me at the point where I had to watch the ritual, although I never gave her the ingredients (they vanished from my inventory anyway).
basically this quest is so broken I am amazed it functions at all, for anyone... 124.168.71.29 07:17, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Help?[edit]

ok so I was being a jerk and killed all the orcs befor I knew they had quest.. Will they ever return? --24.217.162.56 05:55, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

It appears that the chief, Yamarz, is essential (unkillable), but Atub is not, and she also will never respawn. Therefore, I think the quest cannot be completed if you killed Atub. --Xyzzy Talk 15:33, 23 September 2012 (GMT)

Angry goats - moved from article[edit]

There may be two goats that appear as hostile on your compass at the beginning of this quest. Although they do not attack, you will remain "in combat" until you kill them or move a sufficient distance away. It is possible that they are allied with the giant assaulting Largashbur.

I am moving this "bug" to the talk page because it seems highly unlikely that the game would mistakenly spawn two hostile goats at the start of this quest. What is much more likely is that a randomly encountered spriggan had turned two commonly encountered goats hostile. I have experienced the exact same thing just east of Riften. Two hunters killed the spriggan, but the hostile goats lingered in the area. They never attacked me, but showed on my radar as nearby enemies until I hunted them down. I have also seen similar incidents elsewhere around Skyrim where I encountered random normally-passive animals that showed as hostile. Usually they have the green glow that indicates spriggan influence, but it can be subtle sometimes. --Xyzzy Talk 17:53, 23 September 2012 (GMT)

I have observed these (at least) two goats a couple of times when fighting an attacking giant outside Largashbur. They never participated in the fighting. Once I tried to fight them, but they ran away as soon as I approached them, so after running like a fool around the forest a bit I gave up and did not bother. I never came close enough to be sure if there would have been any subtle green glow to them. They remained showing as nearby enemies as long as they were close enough. As there seem to be more than one having observed this, and one of them (me) have twice, I believe there might be reason to investigate a bit further before the bug is dismissed finally.
Can a giant activate a spell similar to the spriggans? —MortenOSlash (talk) 19:16, 23 September 2012 (GMT)
Using the CSList I can see both giants and goats are part of the Creature Faction (0x00000013). Would that give the goats an incentive to side with the giant in a conflict, though they are to afraid of the player to actually join the fight? —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:40, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
Hmmm. If you look at the Assistance stat for EncGoatWild, it says that the goat will help allies. Having the two creatures in the same faction is done mainly to prevent them from attacking each other. I'm not sure if that would make the goat and giant allies, though. I've never had a goat come to the rescue of a giant before (just thinking about that makes me chuckle), but it's not outside of the realm of possibilities. I still think that a nearby spriggan is the most likely cause of this.
Either way, I wouldn't consider this a bug, but instead a random chance based on normal game mechanics. --Xyzzy Talk 20:33, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
I checked this out once, there was a group of three goats far to the left of the gate (is that North? can't remember). The three goats were hostile, but kept running away. I used all forms of detect life and they were the only living creatures, and I thoroughly searched the area where they had been and no spriggan. Golden SilenceBreak the Silence 20:51, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
Not a bug as such, not for this particular quest, anyway, but maybe a note? And maybe an entry under glitches, as it seems to be a general unintended consequence, only rare, as goats and giants rarely meet other places? —MortenOSlash (talk) 21:15, 24 September 2012 (GMT)

() How about a note on the Animals page? --Xyzzy Talk 02:29, 25 September 2012 (GMT)

Yes. That might be an even better place, as it is not a glitch in itself, rather a possibly unintended side effect of the factions assigned for goats. —MortenOSlash (talk) 19:18, 15 October 2012 (GMT)
Ok. I reworded the note on the Animals page that mentions the spriggan influence. Feel free to tweak it as you see fit. --Xyzzy Talk 04:55, 16 October 2012 (GMT)
So giants have the Call of the Wild ability too? —MortenOSlash (talk) 05:17, 16 October 2012 (GMT)
No they do not. I am unable to find any data on CSList that would indicate that goats would turn hostile due to a hostile giant in the area, unless you count the theoretical link that we discussed above, and that would require some sort of verification before being added to the article. Probably the best way to test this is to attack a giant, then use console commands to create a goat, or lead the angry giant to an area with some naturally-occuring goats. --Xyzzy Talk 13:54, 16 October 2012 (GMT)
That is beyond my ability, I am afraid. It could have been really fun trying, though. Herds of angry goats running away in all directions. —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:35, 16 October 2012 (GMT)

() I finally got around to testing this. I traveled to Talking Stone camp, and used the console command player.placeatme 2ebe2 10 to spawn 10 wild goats before and after pissing off the giant. None of the unnaturally-spawned goats turned hostile to me, and the giant started attacking the goats! There appears to be no inherit alliance between giants and goats. BTW, there is something especially awe-inspring in seeing a giant send a goat disappearing into the distance with a swing of his club. Tiger Woods, eat your heart out! --Xyzzy Talk 02:28, 23 October 2012 (GMT)

Falsifying a hypothesis is an equal goal to confirming. Sounds quite fun the way it turned out! —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:44, 23 October 2012 (GMT)

Quest Initiation[edit]

I'm not sure that this quest is prompted by dialogue from Riften guards, as described on the page. I have not been able to get any relevant conversation from a Riften guard, and it is not mentioned on the guard dialogue page. Does anyone recall being pointed to this quest in some other way besides stumbling upon the location? --JR (talk) 04:23, 7 October 2012 (GMT)

I do, but I'm afraid I can't remember the specifics, only that the location was added to my map by a Riften guard. 98.204.42.6 21:17, 7 November 2013 (GMT)
I've looked around, and so far, I haven't been able to find anything Riften-specific. The only thing I can see that would point you towards Largashbur at all is if you're in any of Dushnikh Yal, Mor Khazgur, Narzulbur, or Largashbur, the guards may comment on those four being the "great strongholds". That dialogue adds map markers for all four to your map.
If anybody can remember any of the dialogue that led them to Largashbur, even just a couple of words, that would be helpful. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:42, 7 November 2013 (GMT)
I have checked the game files via the CK. None of the riften guards have any dialogue related to this quest, and there are no quest related dialogue where you may hear a rumour about troubles in Largashbur. If you right click DA04 (the quest) and select "use info", you can see all the related quest dialogue. Nothing would have set the quest stage to "10" which is where you would get the "investigat the rumours" quest objective other than quest dialogue by Largashbur NPCs. Perhpas it was originally planned for the Dragonborn to hear a rumour in Riften, but that was cut from the final game, because there is no evidence that any such dialogue exists or is linked to the quest in the game files. 119.17.50.150 09:27, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the double-check. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:37, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
I met the same problem. My solution is to use console commands to start this quest. First input player.setlevel 9. Then use the incPCS command repeatedly to upgrade my skills until my level ups, for example input player.incpcs sneak repeatedly. After upgrading my level to 10 by this way, I successfully started this quest. This way also works on Daedric Quests Boethiah's Calling and The Break of Dawn.180.165.3.64 15:45, 12 November 2019 (GMT)

Just use the dismay shout on the giant before he hits the orcs — Unsigned comment by 67.240.73.137 (talk) at 04:19 on 17 March 2013 (GMT)
I looked in the editor and no, the orcs aren't set to respawn. However, they're unnamed for a reason. They're expected to die and probably aren't used by anyone or anything else. Xander9009 (talk) 14:49, 13 May 2013 (GMT)
I realize this is old, but I sympathize with the perverse drive to save even useless NPCs. The dismay shout counts as an attack and will probably get named orcs mad at you; Slow Time and a Paralysis spell or paralysis-poisoned arrow is a better choice. Then run in and beat on the giant while he's immobilized. Now you can enjoy several useless unnamed Orc NPCs wandering around Largashbur forever. :) 98.204.42.6 21:21, 7 November 2013 (GMT)

Flying Corpse[edit]

Has anyone else had the oddity with Yamarz that when the giant kills him, his corpse flies insanely high into the sky before falling back down to the ground (and not necessarily within reach)? This just happened to me, and in testing, it's happened maybe about one out of every three times. It's possible there's some mod or the USKP causing the oddity, and I think I remember reading something about flying corpses somewhere else, but I can't find anything. Robin Hood  (talk) 10:29, 5 March 2014 (GMT)

I do not think this is specific to Yamarz. I did not experience what I call "The Flying Corpse" effect specifically with Yamarz, but I have seen other NPCs fly nearly straight up into the air and seemingly disappear. It happens whether the death blow comes from other NPCs or my own characters at times. Sometimes, I have a hard time finding the body. Best guess is that it is completely non-NPC/character-specific clipping/physics/game mechanic glitch (which may be documented somewhere). Also, giants hit really hard, much like werewolves (see the goats flying comment above). This may be one of the "works as intended" situations...1NUY4SH4 (talk) 08:01, 7 March 2014 (GMT)
I definitely think this falls outside of "as intended". If it were intentional, you'd expect there to be significant variation, like sometimes just flying a little, sometimes flying more, but there was no in-between here—either Yamarz fell to the ground as you'd expect, or he flew straight up like a missile. Thanks for confirming that it's not just him, though. I thought I'd read of other things like this happening, but this is the first time it's happened to me. Option Re-appears on Atub's Dialogue[edit]

After stage 110 and when talking to Atub, the dialogue "I have returned with Shagrol's hammer" re-appears on the menu after it has been answered. Bug or feature?- in that clicking the option again, one can then select the other description to how Yamarz died, only to find out that Malacath's response is the same.--Lmstearn (talk) 12:30, 9 March 2014 (GMT)

stubborn Atub[edit]

I brought the troll fat and daedra heart to Atub, and the proper dialogue occurred, but she just stands there. she won't go to the longhouse (I walked into the longhouse by myself to see if she'd follow, she didn't). she keeps saying that the ritual requires concentration or whatever, but she hasn't started it. the only reason I wanted to do this quest was for the achievement you get when you obtain all the Daedric artifacts, and I'll be somewhat pissed if I can't.

on that subject, am I correct in assuming you don't need to collect all of them in the same playthrough? the attempt I mention above is in a playthrough where I got 12 of them, but I've recently started a new modded playthrough in which I was planning on avoiding the Daedric princes altogether, but if I can get the achievement across multiple playthroughs I might try this quest in the new game and see if Atub acts any differently. - 173.212.101.126 01:55, 17 May 2014 (GMT)

No orcs[edit]

Okay, so i'm on 360 and i went to Largashbur to do the quest for Volendrung. I remember from a previous character. They're fighting a giant and you have to help them in order to gain entrence. Well, i arrived to the gate, and no giant and no Atub. So i go over the gateside on the mountain. And i enter the longhouse to see where the hell everyone is at, and they're all in the longhouse... i waited hours to see if they'd exit, so they didn't. I tried stealing something and having them chase me outside since it wont let me aquire the quest inside. I get outside, i pay the tole, and they continue attacking me. I have NO idea what to do and it's really angering me. I'm a level 3 Orc. — Unsigned comment by 68.118.45.143 (talk) at 09:18 on 4 March 2015 (GMT)

I believe the quest should not be available until you are level 9, so I think you will have to level up a bit first. —MortenOSlash (talk) 19:30, 5 March 2015 (GMT)

A New Issue with this trek[edit]

I am at a loss with my issue. When I arrived at the cave, Yamarz was there but all he kept saying was "Let's get this over with". I went into the cave (already cleared) and killed a couple of giants (and checked the chests) but it had no impact. And of course I already found the hammer but have no idea where it is (I am deep into the game). Any workarounds to help? I even tried killing him outside the cave but he keeps coming back to life.

I've gone back to a previous Save so he still tolerates me lol.

Thanks,

Collecting Volendrung is not necessary for the Oblivion Walker achievement/trophy.[edit]

So I just completed this quest as the last in my run to get the trophy for the SE on PS4 - as soon as I completed the quest, I received a notification about the trophy even though the hammer was still sitting on the alter. Seems that there is no requirement to actually possess this item to count towards the artifacts; possibly this is case with other artifacts? - Syko Conor (talk) 00:21, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

That's true, but its the only artifact that this applies to (also applies to all systems and versions of the game). Any further replies should go on the same topic on the Artifacts page. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 01:28, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

Ugor disappeared, leaving Atub bugged[edit]

I had a variation of the Ugor problem, despite having the Unofficial Patch. After the giant attack, Ugor was nowhere to be found, and her scene with Atub didn't happen. Atub could still be talked to (starting the quest) and given the items, but then, she didn't go on to perform the ritual and stayed on the guard tower instead, apparently still waiting for Ugor to talk to her.

prid 00019E1B and moveto player made Ugor appear, the dialogue between her and Atub played and everything went on correctly. --Ethruvisil (talk) 23:47, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

When Yamarz Killed the Giant[edit]

I would have expected this to have been absolutely prevented by the game (by making the giant essential until either Yamarz was dead or I agreed to kill it for him), but when I told Yamarz to do his duty, he actually managed to kill the giant (the giant seemed to be bugged, and never attacked him). When I went up to him afterwards, Yamarz gave me the first line of dialogue as if I had killed the giant for him, then immediately dropped dead. Malacath told me "you took care of him and the giants", and my dialogue with Atub later was "he asked me to kill the giant and then attacked me". Clearly, the game was never meant to handle this outcome, and decided to treat it as if I had killed the giant, since that is the only way the giant is supposed to end up dead - and, since Yamarz was still alive when the giant died, clearly he must have asked me to kill it for him and I obliged. I just can't explain why he dropped dead instead of attacking me.--Shahrazad the Listener (talk) 17:36, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

Completing the quest with Chief Yamarz alive[edit]

You can complete the quest peacefully with Chief Yamarz alive.

1. Kill the Giant on entering Giant's Grove without talking to Yamarz while the marker is still with him.
Do not talk to him before killing the Giant.
2. Exit Giant's Grove without talking to Yamarz.
Do not get close to him when you try to exit the area otherwise the conversation with him will start forcefully and he will be hostile.
3. Go back to Largashbur and complete the quest.
Chief Yamarz will soon come back to the tribe by walk and stay in the longhouse.
Only one of the objectives "Protect Yamarz" will not be complete but the quest itself will be complete. — Unsigned comment by 128.106.244.229 (talk) at 11:08 on 29 March 2021 (UTC)
Does this cause Yamarz to remain peaceful, as opposed to the method mentioned in the Notes? --Ethruvisil (talk) 18:27, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
Yes. Once you get past the step 2, you've almost succeeded.
As long as he doesn't talk to you, he will not be hostile.
So you have to use jump when you exit the area and try not to get close to Yamarz.
He will stay where he is until the quest is complete.
The governorship will be given to Gularzob peacefully. — Unsigned comment by 128.106.244.229 (talk) at 07:01 on 7 April 2021 (UTC)
That's not what I was asking about. Will he remain peaceful after returning to the Longhouse? --Ethruvisil (talk) 19:12, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
Yes. When he comes back to the tribe, nobody attacks him. He will return to the Longhouse as if nothing happened.
This method does not give Yamarz a chance to turn hostile by skipping some objectives. — Unsigned comment by 128.106.244.229 (talk) at 02:36 on 12 April 2021 (UTC)
To further explain step 2 above, you'll have to jump up the mountain side to bypass/avoid Yamarz as he stops right on the path leading out of the grove if you defeat the Giant by yourself. His auto talk range is very wide and sneak/invisibility won't work past him. It is confirmed that Yamarz will be peaceful and still thinks he is Chief. The other NPCs will not turn hostile towards him.FalloutIII 2013 (talk) 15:29, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
