Bug? Stuck Before 3/3[edit]
I finished A Daedra's Best Friend and Ill Met By Moonlight, returned Runil's journal, saved Valdr and killed a giant for bounty quest, but the number of people I assisted was still 2/3. I am not sure it is bug or some of the above quests don't count. I couldn't do Hert quest because I did Dark brotherhood quest first. Mathies wouldn't take my wheat. No one else gave me any quest. Luckily, I found a post online about dropping armor and it worked. Tekla took the glass shield I dropped and it counted toward the assist quest. (ZekunD 00:55, 26 December 2011 (UTC))
- also did Valdr Hunting Party quest, returned Runil's Journal, Ill Met By Moonlight and bounty (killing a dragon) at falkreath and only got 2/3. Quimoniz 01:05, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

- I also finished A Daedra's Best Friend, Ill Met By Moonlight, Runil's journal, Valdr's hunting party, cabbage for the farmer, and the Jarl's requests but still haven't been able to get it. Nobody picks up stuff I drop, either. This is on PS3. — Unsigned comment by 71.224.121.2 (talk) at 22:42 on 14 January 2012

- I'm having the exact same issue. Other than the initial "kill the bandit leader" request from the Jarl (after getting him the mead), and selling cabbage to Mathies, none of the other quests or miscellaneous objectives for that region are counting towards the 3/3 goal. I'm stuck on 2/3 now and I'm convinced this is a bug. --109.175.185.11 17:18, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

- I ran into a similar issue, also playing on PS3. I completed both A Daedra's Best Friend and Ill Met By Moonlight, but my quest journal still shows 0/3 for assisting the people of Falkreath. I started the first one prior to asking about being made a thane, but I started the second after that. Cappo 21:17, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

(←) Regarding difficulties completing Thane of Falkreath requirements. I was also experiencing the "stuck at 2/3" for the Falkreath Thane mission. I completed all the major quests for Falkreath, plus several of the Bounty and miscellaneous side missions. I only received credit for the first two (sold some cabbage, and retrieved a journal), but no matter how many other missions I did, nothing counted toward helping the people of Falkreath Hold. It was suggested that I drop some armor and allow someone to have it, but no matter what I dropped, it went completely unacknowledged by citizens and guards. Finally, thanks to some helpful advice found online, I chopped and sold firewood to Hert (thankfully she was alive). This act successfully completed the requirements for Thane of Falkreath.

- Yeah bounties don't always seem to be counted, I've had this happen in several holds. As for Falkreath the 3 I know usually work are selling vegetables, stealing the note for Dengeir, and bring the Ashes to Runil. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 09:24, 18 September 2012 (GMT)

- Ok, I have a slightly different problem, in that I had just completed the Jarl's task and he offered to make me Thane if I help the people of the hold. We'll 2 dragons came by and before I knew it and killed almost everyone important. I really didn't notice because their bodies we're behind buildings and under bushes. I went off and did some other quests and by the time I came back to Falkreath, I couldn't re-set the game far enough back to make all of them alive again. The farmer (Mathies) is dead, Lod is dead, Runil is Dead, the shop owner (Stodil?) is dead. I can't complete the Daedric quest because Lod can't tell me to find the dog. Dengeir doesn't ask me to steal the letter, so he must know Lod is dead. I've chopped the wood for Hert, and dropped the shield and even killed a dragon for a bounty, but for the life of me can't figure out how to help someone to get 3/3, still stuck on 2/3. I did Ill Met By Moonlight and rescued Valdr hunting party. It's bad enough I can't complete the Daedric quest lines, but I don't think I can become Thane either? Does anyone have any suggestions for triggering another quest so I can complete the Thane quest. Do any one the expansion packs add new people or quests int he Falkreath area? Thanks. Hard to image they wouldn't make Lod or others un-kill-able until after their quest had been triggered.

(←) A Daedra's Best Friend, Ill Met By Moonlight, saving Valdr and bounty quests do not add to the Falkreath thane quest. (Bounty quests don't affect disposition. You need quests that affect disposition.) This quest is hard to complete at all if Runil is dead, unless you have Investor. The fastest way to do it without Investor is to sell cabbages (or something else) to Mathies, deliver Berit's Ashes to Runil, and chop wood for Hert. No combat needed, presto Thane. --Morrolan (talk) 13:22, 6 September 2013 (GMT)
- Thanks, selling one potato plant to Mathies did it for me. The only gripe is that the misc. "Help people of Falkreath 2/3" quest failed to point the quest marker to Mathies.--Lmstearn (talk) 02:36, 7 February 2014 (GMT)

- I had the issue of 2/3 I had done the Daedra mission, delivered the urn, killed the Warewolf, and two or three others. - By Daedra mission I assume you mean A Daedra's Best Friend, as Ill Met By Moonlight is also a Daedric quest. Neither affect this quest in the slightest. Delivering the urn is Thadgeir's Delivery quest, and selling Mathies his potatoes is Gather Wheat. Those two are two of the three you need, so I guess you probably did one of the others (probably Chop Wood, maybe Some Light Theft). --Morrolan (talk) 15:59, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Problems with becoming Thane Related to the Rare Gifts Misc. quests[edit]
Apparently the questline is tied up with the "Rare Gifts" quests. I had one of these miscellaneous quests in my log - specifically, the one requiring me to deliver a copy of the book "The Mirror" to Aldis in Solitude. Naturally, I had no reason to believe that this quest would mess with anything, but Siddgeir's Black-Briar Mead variation of the Rare Gifts quest is necessary to earn Thaneship in Falkreath, and since it is not possible to have more than one of the quest variants in your log, it's possible for this to get in the way. It took some research before I found the problem, so it might not be a bad idea to add something in that mentions this, along with a quick link to the Rare Gifts article so players can resolve any issues quickly.86.175.42.208 18:24, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- (It appears the above paragraph was deleted - I haven't reverted it in an effort to spite, I'm just doing so to ask why it was removed - it seems relevant enough to me. I've signed it this time, on the off-chance that was the issue.) — Unsigned comment by 86.175.42.208 (talk) on 4 January

- Confirming that "Rare Gifts" quests do in fact stall Falkreath Jarl from offering you the quest. I had a quest to "Bring one Song of the Alchemists to Lami" in Solitude and could not get Jarl Siddgeir to offer me his quest until I had cleared it. (←) Yes, this is correct. However if you have Hearthfire installed, then you get a note from the Jarl of Falkreath by courier at level 9 which lets you skip Rare Gifts for Siddgeir. Otherwise you can always join the Stormcloaks; conquering Falkreath for them installs Dengeir, who doesn't need Rare Gifts or a bandit favor to let you start the Falkreath thane quest. --Morrolan (talk) 13:25, 6 September 2013 (GMT)
Twice a Thane[edit]
I completed this quest while Siddgeir was Jarl. Later, after completing Rescue from Fort Neugrad, I returned to find Dengeir had taken over as Jarl, and he offered me the thaneship all over again, straight away. As a result, I have two Blades of Falkreath, one notably better than the other as it's a levelled reward. Peterguard 19:20, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- You can do this for every single minor hold plus the Reach and Whiterun (although Whiterun gives an axe and a blade from the different jarls). --Morrolan (talk) 13:25, 6 September 2013 (GMT)
Siddgeir not offering Thaneship[edit]
I have brought him his Black-Briar Mead and have cleared out the Bandits he wanted killed, and he doesn't offer any dialogue option to become Thane of Falkreath. I have done additional quests in Falkreath in attempt to force him forward, to no avail. Are there any reasons Siddgeir would be refusing to offer the dialogue option to become Thane of Falkreath? Possibly the death of his Housecarl during the Dark Brotherhood quest line? Completion of the Civil War in favor of the Imperial Legion? 70.28.245.100 12:19, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- I had this problem too. I'm pretty sure it's from killing the Housecarl - people seem to get stuck in a "Foe" relationship with you if you've killed someone they're close to (even if they don't see you, so I consider it a bug). I was able to become Thane after correcting my relationship with him: player.setrelationshiprank 00019822 2. Though I don't remember if I ever delivered the mead for him, so you might try setting it to 0 or 1 instead of 2 and see if you can work your way up (by doing bounties, etc.). --VSim 04:43, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
No option to become thane.[edit]
I have talked to the jarl sid or whatever his name was and he only has two dialogue options, one is to ask how long or how he became jarl or something and the other asks if his inexperience is a problem. Since then i have done the two daedric missions and some bounties and he still has no dialogue telling me how to became thane. Can someone please tell me if this is a bug or something? 217.137.157.197 22:59, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

- This happened to me as well, I waited a month ingame and the option appeared. My best guess is that the radiant quest to kill a bandit leader had no viable targets because I'd already cleared all the dungeons on his list, when I went back after playing around in Markarth for a month he sent me to Embershard Mine, always the first location I go because it's at the start of the game. Odd[edit]
I just started my fourth playthrough of skyrim ( after I bought the new dlc's ). Oddly enough, I just reached Whiterun and just as I was going to enter the Bannered Mare, a courier stops me and gives me a note from the Jarl Siddgeir, offering me the title of Thane for helping his people. I was playing on Xbox one. According to what I’ve read here, the first quest is to fetch the jarl some mead (to become a thane), but instead of that quest, I’ve received the quest to kill the bandit leader at the mine. I come back, but vampires start to attack the town (note that I have dawnguard and hearthfire installed) I accidentally hit a guard while fighting the vampires, and after giving some money (to fill my debt) Serena (the vampire follower in dawnguard) is still attacked. I fast travel away to do some other quest (Serana did not follow) but after I come back to falkreath, Serana is not being attacked by the guards, but there are some (3) dead bodies on the ground (not made up). I go inside but the jarl and everybody inside the building are still aggressive. I go outside (they’re still following, and then I decided to reload the save when I came to the town). I decide to let Serana stay outside waiting, I still get attacked while being inside (note that I have first engaged in a conversation with the jarl before they start turning hostile and complete the quest. At this point the jarl names me the thane of falkreath.). I go outside and try to *turn off* my weapon and I pay my debt (again). They stop attacking me but I have to pay debt again. After that, I go talk to the jarls protectors/people in the building (every one of them) but none of them give me the option to buy land which I wanted to do. Am I supposed to help the citizens or is this just a bug? I think it is a bug but I really would like to know how to buy land without going to the save way back when I was trying to kill the vampire. Thank you for reading this long story. (Date: July 4th 2020) (by unknown)
Diplomatic immunity quest speech[edit]
I recently installed the Hearthfire dlc. I got the letter from a courier (The courier was wearing no clothes) when I traveled to Falkreath because thats the faction that I got, the Jarl is always sleeping. and when I do talk to him his speech options are from diplomatic immunity and I tried killing him and reloading but nothing happened. Ill try and reload an earlier save and see what happens. If anyone can help me that would be nice — Unsigned comment by 24.8.152.35 (talk) at 00:09 on 6 August 2013
Bug moved from page[edit]
- The favor counter can get stuck before reaching 3/3, regardless of which quests you do.
- This can be fixed by selling cabbages to Mathies.
I think this bug is there because the previous page listed a lot of quests that don't actually advance the assist citizens objective at all. I've removed them all. If there's another bug with the assist citizens objective, someone post it here and we can reexamine this bug.
The bug workaround suggests doing Gather Wheat for Mathies, which is one of the few favor quests in Falkreath that actually works properly, and is now listed in the table. --Morrolan (talk) 16:27, 8 September 2013 (GMT)
Bypas for Dark Brotherhood quest preventing becoming Thane/Buying property.[edit]
A way around the Dark Brotherhood quest "Contract: Kill Helvard" preventing you from purchasing Lakeview Manor and becoming Thane of Falkreach. If someone could clean this up, add quotations and references and make it look spiffy, that would be great.
For the PC version only, using "Player.setrelationshiprank 00019822 4" (For Jarl Siddgeir - Would have to get the id reference for Jarl Dengeir of Stuhn if you havn't chosen a side or sided with Stormcloaks) Using this will change the disposition of the Jarl to friendly with you, opening up once again being able to become Thane and being able to purchase the plot of land.
I can't even talk to anyone I am suppose to assist to become a thane.[edit]
I killed the bandits, was offered and purchased property and built Lake-view Manor. I asked the Jarl (the younger one) if there was anything else could help him with and he told me he would like to appoint me Thane but I needed to assist the people of his hold. I went to the saw mill and the only dialogue option was if I wanted to buy wood. I went to the older former Jarl and he just keep repeating the same line about his past time as Jarl, being replaced etc. I can't even locate Lod nor the people from the farm. It seems I can't locate anyone to assist. Any suggestions? — Unsigned comment by 24.205.98.74 (talk) at 19:13 on 6 December 2013

Cannot become Thane, tried everything, please help[edit]
I own Skryrim Legendary Edition on the PS3 and really want to become Thane of Falkreath so I can purchase Lakeview Manor. The bug first began where I got a letter after installing Hearthfire telling me to speak to the Jarl of Falkreath to buy land relatively early in the game. I ignored it, completed "A Dadera's best friend" and some other quests around the hold, but did not speak to the Jarl about the letter, Thaneship or Land. I then liberated the hold for the Stormcloaks, so Dengeir is now Jarl. However there are only two options when speaking to him (and none of them involve Thansehip or land) and his steward only yields information about herself and some radiant quests when asked about. Sometimes when I walk away from Dengeir he says "I'll be Jarl again someday, I swear!" I completed the quest to steal the letter when he was not Jarl. If you need to know for some reason, the radiant quests in the log are: Two of the Thieves Guild "Jobs" Steal the Dragons Breath mead for Olda in Dragon Bridge, Find a copy of the Last Scabbard of Akrash for Ghorza, Steal the Statue of Dibella in Markarth Temple. I have not killed Helvard, or any of his court. I haven't done anything to piss him off either, and completed Ill met By Moonlight. I have done more than 3 favors for the people of Falkreath. Is he not recongnising is status? Any help, anything, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Farenthor (talk) 00:04, 23 February 2014 (GMT)Farenthor

(←) I just looked in the Creation Kit and here's some more detail, just for completeness. Not only is it random, but you also have to trigger every other "quest" in this section that has to do with dropping things (or fail to drop the required item within a certain timeframe). So if it's currently waiting for you to drop a weapon, let's say, you can drop as many armours as you like and the quest won't trigger. You'd have to drop a weapon or wait until it stops wanting you to drop a weapon—then hope that it randomly decides it wants you to drop a piece of armour next. Most of the so-called quests in this section will only reset after 12-48 hours (depending on the quest), so deliberately getting someone to take some armour would very likely take quite a bit of time unless you're extremely lucky. – Robin Hood (talk) 03:42, 19 May 2014 (GMT)
-
- So, does that imply that I should also drop other things (weapons, clothes) to try to maximise the chances?101.168.170.152 02:06, 20 May 2014 (GMT)
- That would improve your chances, yes. Go through the list and see what needs to be dropped to satisfy each of the drop-based quests. Then just drop all of them at once and see if anything happens. Also, wait after each successful drop and then re-try. In theory, you should trigger a new drop quest after either 12 or 48 hours. Good luck! – Robin Hood (talk) 13:54, 20 May 2014 (GMT)

- This is an aspect of stewards. Whenever you ask a follower to be a steward, you always dismiss your current follower. Usually the follower you've just made steward is your current follower because that's the only way to get them to your house, but with Hearthfire housecarls they'll go to your house on their own. You can also have this happen with married followers (you ask your spouse to be a steward, and your current follower starts wandering off). --Morrolan (talk) 15:51, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

I went to Siddgeir to become thane of Falkreath. I've helped people and all. I went to kill the bandit and after that I forgot about being thane and I did the Stormcloaks quest. I went back to Falkreath and noticed that Dengeir is the new jarl. I was able to purchase the land but i'm not yet the thane?? — Unsigned comment by 203.87.147.34 (talk) at 16:42 on 14 April 2015
- That's right. When you completed the quest to put Dengeir on the throne, you gained the right to buy land there as well. If you want to become thane, well, look at this quest page, but you start it by saying "What can I do for you, my jarl?" to him. --Morrolan (talk) 15:52, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
STILL NO LAKEVIEW[edit]
My problem is I AM the thane of Falkreath. I did this quest first before anything I was lvl 8. I became lvl 9 right after the quests were done. I am thane. But when I talk to his steward she only has two options. I can't purchase anything. I haven't gotten the letter yet. Should I just wait for the letter? I was under the impression that it automatically updated like you already read it. I've done this on TWO characters and still no option to buy after I'm thane? My quests were: steal lods letter Deliver ashes Retrieve the journal
All of these I got from people in the inn. (Also helpful hint, don't go to riftin for the mead, but it from the innkeeper in falkreath)
Can anyone help me? Anyone else have this issue?— Unsigned comment by Jinyxx (talk • contribs) at 18:20 on 11 August 2015
- If you check out Skyrim talk:Lakeview Manor, you'll see that you're not the only person to have this bug. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like anyone has found a solution. Or maybe I didn't spend enough time digging through the page to find one, that's a possibility too hahaha. •WoahBro►talk 19:28, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
Lakeview (yes),thaneship (technically) Rayya and Blade of Falkreath (not really)[edit]
So in this playtrough I have become thane but neither the blade nor my housecarl were given to me. — Unsigned comment by 37.6.211.120 (talk) at 14:35 on 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- Are you sure you're thane? Even without Hearthfire, you should get the Blade of Falkreath. You don't need to be Thane to build Lakeview Manor, you just need to befriend the jarl, which is to say you need to complete the prerequisite quest to starting the thane quest. --Morrolan (talk) 20:53, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
Being Thane of Falkreath?[edit]
Being Thane of Falkreath, is the best but why can't I build a home near it, do I sleep in the Inns or do I sleep near the fallen house near the Inn????? — Unsigned comment by 205.200.228.172 (talk) at 19:25 on 10 September 2015 (UTC)
Minor Detail With Selling Crops to Mattheis[edit]
Thaneship page correctly states that you can Help the People of Falkreath by selling wheat to Matthies at Corpselight Farm, but implies that you must sell him wheat only. Actually, you can satisfy his part of the quest by selling him any crop item, including cabbages and potatoes. Haven't tried leeks, but I bet they'd work, too. I'd just as soon hang onto my wheat to make healing potions with, thankyouverymuch. — Unsigned comment by 107.134.154.186 (talk) at 16:58 on 15 September 2017
- Its an unfortunate situation as the quest for gathering crops of any kind is called "Gather Wheat". In fact you can't even sell wheat to Mathies, only cabbage, potatoes, and gourds. The quest page holds the correct information for all the people you can sell to. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 17:49, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

so, during my quest, to become a thane of falkreath, when i went to go talk to Mathies, and he gave me the quest Ill Met By Moonlight, will that count as becoming a thane if i go do and complete the quest?--Jetcold0 (talk) 01:47, 17 December 2019 (GMT)
- No, but you can Gather Wheat for Mathies, and that does count. --Enodoc (talk) 22:29, 17 December 2019 (GMT)
Still have to talk to the Jarl but he alread made me Thane[edit]
I already did the Civil War quest (Stormcloak) and I go to Falkreath to finish up this sidequest. I instantly get the "Help three people" quest. Well, I already helped 2 people, though I don't know how for one. The other was the dog. Anyway, I help one more person find their journel and I go back. I have the blade of Falkreath and I'm thane but the maid is the steward and I still have the side quest to talk to the Jarl. What do I do?
P.S.
This is on the PS3. Yes, I know, I'm way behind on getting a PS4, but I will soon.

When the Blade of Falkreath is determined[edit]
When does the game decide what random version of the Blade of Falkreath you will receive? I tested this with the Unofficial Patch installed, which I don't believe affects this, but should be mentioned since it does fix a bug with the Blade of the Rift. For Falkreath, it seems to decide the weapon when you first arrive in Falkreath. I don't know what the loading radius is. My testing method was to run to Bjorlam at the Whiterun carriage straight out of Helgen, save, then travel to Falkreath via carriage, then save again. Every attempt starting from the second save yielded the same random weapon, while different weapons could result loading from the first. For anyone hoping to manipulate what weapon you receive, this is frustratingly early. Also bear in mind that if you did first arrive in Falkreath at a late level hoping for a better version, you would miss the level 9 cutoff for Siddgeir's Rare Gifts quest, which also affects which version of the letter you will receive notifying you of the option to buy land. --Olaus (talk) 04:13, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
