Orcish Armor Comments

Shouls it be noted that the guards also say "Orcish armor. Strong, and ugly. Just like the people who made them." Note that I'm not sure if this is PRECISELY what they said, and I sold the armor since. Feel free to test it out. Broxigar 10:48, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

yes, they say that, feel free to add it. (Eddie The Head 10:55, 19 December 2011 (UTC))

Naked Dialogue?

I can't seem to find it on this page, I remember the guards/villagers making remarks because I had nothing on (no weapons also). Does anyone remember how it went? They were complaining like "What are you a barbarian? Put some clothes on!" Is this right?

I couldn't find any dialogue by guards for this. Its highly likely normal citizens have something.--Bwross 10:17, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
I remember people calling me a freak, or Balgruuf telling me that I was going to freeze, but guards never bothered me in any way 82.243.194.53 10:30, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

So, so, so many more to be pulled out. Is the dialogue at all extractable? There so many a few could easily be missed or not even encountered by a player. Ones I know are missing or suspect to be there:

-I definitely got one about Leather Armor, though I do not recall what it said, just something generic like, "Oh, so you like Leather Armor"

I heard one for scale armor - "That's fine scale armor you've got on there. Shiny." The whole part is in the subtitles, but the voiced part was "That's fine scale armor you've got. Shiny."

There are almost definitely none for Daedric armor, I have worn it for a long time now and no guard has commented on it. -- Deathoflaughter 8:51 PM GMT, 11th April 2012

Sections

I think that now we have too many sections in this article. For example: "Don't think you can barter with me like I'm one of those damned shopkeepers." is a generic message not affiliated with the Thieves Guild (I never joined the TG and the guards say it anyways.) --Arkhon 05:37, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm in agreement its not aesthetically pleasing and very intuitive right now. Biggest thing would be getting all the quotes of which I'd wager we maybe have ~20-30% right now.--Bwross 06:08, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Dark Brotherhood

I haven't completed 'Hail Sithis!' yet, but the guards keep saying "Psst. Hey, I know who you are. Hail Sithis!". In fact, I haven't finished Mourning Never Comes. Is it a minor bug? — Unsigned comment by 78.100.193.159 (talk) on 30 December 2011

Nah. It's a simple sign that the guard knows you're in the Brotherhood. rpeh •TCE 17:30, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

My cousin...

Sure that this does not require any prerequisite? I spent a long time without fighting my first dragon and did not encounter it before. May be random, but maybe you need to finish Dragon Rising first. --Ulkomaalainen 22:07, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

only real way to test would be to load up a new character and head to another city besides Whiterun or at the least avoid Dragonsreach.--Bwross 12:14, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

A friendly dispute

I'd like to dispute some dialog in the game. I play a 360 account. When I was starting off, I loved the two-handed weapons, but soon decided that for the same weight as a two-handed weapon, I could merely wield two one-handed weapons and cause more damage and do it faster. As I played more, I ended up sticking primarily to one-handed, leaving my two-handed skill at a mere level 22, while my one-handed rose up into the 80s before I turned back to two-handed. The supposed dialog for the two-handed weapons is:

"The gods gave you two hands, and you use them both for your weapon. I can respect that." - Yet this is the dialog I've heard constantly in my travels, keeping in mind my two-handed skill was only at level 22. I'd encounter this dialog most often when dual wielding one-handed weapons. This makes me wonder if there is a bug where the game looks at the player's hands to register if there is a weapon in it. I highly doubt this, but I'd most commonly hear the two-handed reference when actually fighting with a weapon in both hands.

This happened to me, two-handed skill around 5, but I had a bow equipped, so I guess this backs up your theory to some degree.Jazstar 22:26, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
I've never used 2H weapons, and I get this all the time. I've NEVER heard the 1H dialog. I play PC, no mods. Definitely some sort of bug.

Once I started getting my two-handed skill up more, I started hearing the dialog that is supposed to be for one-handed weapons:

"You're like me, eh? Don't fancy those clunky two-handed weapons.". - And the oddest thing is that I'd hear this most commonly from the guards who are wielding two-handed weapons. In fact, I made it a point to look at their weapon and have noted that I only ever hear a guard use this line if they are carrying a two-handed weapon. I know, because each and every time I hear a guard with a Battleaxe say this, I laugh because of the irony.

So I'm wondering if the information is messed up on the page (which I doubt...) or if there is some wacky bug that hasn't been fully explored yet where wielding two one-handed weapons registers in the game the response for the two-handed skill? 9:46 5, Jan 2012 (CST).

Since I hear the two-handed one a lot (the one-handed not at all, strangely, both well beyond the needed threshold) without equipping any weapon - I mostly have magic on my hands - I doubt that it looks at what you're carrying. But maybe somehow they got switched around? --Ulkomaalainen 19:45, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
The second dialogue appears to be used correctly in my game. My Two-handed is still 15 whereas my One-handed is above 30. It is true, however, that the guards themselves wield a Two-handed weapon when they say it. Can't speak for the first sentence Wolok gro-Barok 00:05, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Here's the info:
  • 2-Handed: 30 skill requirement no further.
  • 1-Handed: 30 skill requirement or player holds something that is a 1-handed weapon - although this may be bugged.
Only requirement is that the guard is a guard.--Bwross 11:39, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Afflicted with Lycanthrophy

There's one about bad breath referring to have eaten a corpse but I can't remember the exact wording something along the lines "What have you been eating, your breath smells awful!"

And although they have been included I just want to say that those are hilarious when you play a Khaajit: "I find your wolfish grin... unsettling." I always reply out loud: Meow! "Is that... fur? Coming out of your ears?" I always reply out loud: Duh! "Been tending your hounds? You smell like a wet dog!" I always reply out loud: No but married a werewolf.(Aela in my case)Djarknaein 22:53, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

The Best Offense is a Good Defense

I think this may be triggered by any defensive skill topping 30. I have received this comment with all my characters, despite most of them having little skill in heavy armor or blocking (I usually use magic, dual wielding, and/or light armor). Or it might be triggered by the characters armor rating (I usually get the comment later in the game when my character has higher level gear). Coronus 21:14, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

"They say Ulfric Stormcloak murdered the High King...

...with his voice! Shouted him apart!" I believe they start saying it after the player visits Greybeards. And I am pretty sure it is NOT town-specific. --Shuryard 22:16, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

No, its not town specific, and I hear it everywhere, and I haven't answered the Greybeards' summons yet. ESQuestion?EmailContribs 22:17, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Reaction to shouting in town

"Guard might get nervous, a [man/woman] approaches with [his/her] weapon drawn" - does not happen after shouting.

When the player shouts inside city walls, it is the whole dialog with the guard, not just the reaction. Should we add the whole dialog then? --Shuryard 23:44, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

I have also heard them say "Whoa, whoa whoa. Watch the magic!" after shouting in a town. Should this be added as well? Pigdestroyer232 12:49, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
That line's already listed under the Reactions to Witnessed Events section. ABCface 04:48, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Opening crates

I opened a crate and took what was inside. A guard said "What's she rummaging around in there for?" I didn't see it on the list.

This happened to me too, I looked inside a sack and I heard someone say 'What's he doing rummaging round in there?' After that I heard a reply of 'Perhaps he is looking for food?' This may not have been guards saying this, it may have been other NPC's. — Unsigned comment by 84.92.83.63 (talk) at 11:35 on 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Windhelm guards when a person is found dead

A dragon attacked Windhelm, a female guard got killed by it, and despite that, a few days later, the guards made a fuss about it and everybody was staring at me as if I had something to do with it (stupid AIs). Anyway, when this happens, they start asking you questions about the death. I didn't see them in the list. Aelyth 20:02, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

The list is not comprehensive, it's bound to be incomplete. If you can remember the exact dialogue, feel free to add it yourself. I've got a feeling that the dialogue is not unique to Windhelm guards, though. Wolok gro-Barok 20:05, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
What questions did they ask? I have only been asked questions about someone dieing twice. First in Markarth and then in Windhelm, but both of them where quest related and it was not guards who had died or dragons who had attacked. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 20:12, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Eh, I'm trying to replicate the scene again with an older save file but to no avail so far. I'll make sure I write down what they say the next time it happens. Aelyth 20:34, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
I'll type down what I remember, though, if that's of any use. They start by apostrophising you: "You there [...]"
you then have two dialogue options "I don't know what happened" or "I'm not answering any questions".
I picked "I don't know what happened" and the guard answered something like "If you find any clues, be sure to report to the captain of the guard" and then "I've got my eye on you". Aelyth 09:32, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
It's defiantly not unique to windhelm, I got the dialogue in my first few days playing skyrim -- a citizen in Dawnstar was killed by a snow troll and a guard asked me about it, unfortunately I can't remember the dialogue. (Eddie The Head 09:39, 7 February 2012 (UTC))
The dialogue goes like this: "You there. What do you know about this?" You have two dialogue options "I'm not sure what happened." and "I'm not answering any questions." Choosing the first one- guard will answer "Hmm... If you happen to recollect anything about the incident, you be sure to report to the captain of the guard. I've got my eye on you." Or if you choose the second one "Is that so? Well, perhaps a night in jail might loosen your tongue. Hmmm?" At this point you can say again "I'm not sure what happened." or "Doesn't scare me." I haven't tried the first one because I think the guard's dialogue won't be much different and you will avoid jailing, but by choosing the second one you will end up in jail. The last thing the guard will say is "Alright, you are now under arrest." Kuura 21:27, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

() I pushed off a guard from up the stairs near the Temple of Dibella down to the front of the Silver-Blood Inn, where he died (just for fun xD). There wasn't anything at first but after a one-hour wait one of the passing guards approached me to ask questions. This happened in 1.5.26.05, in Markarth and I had the quest "The Forsworn Conspiracy" but I had yet to start it, so this might be why I was threatened to imprisonment, as to get the quest running.. not sure.

(Guard:)You there. What do you know about this? (1st line:) I'm not sure what happened. (Guard:) Hmm... If you happen to recollect anything about the incident, be sure to report to the captain of the guard. (Exits Convo)(Guard:) I've got my eye on you.

(2nd line:) [I'm not answering any questions]. (Guard:) [Is that so? Well, perhaps a night in jail will loosen your tongue. Hmmm?] (Return to previous convo menu, upgrade player 2nd line with:) [Don't scare me.] (Here you can still choose the first line and be done with it but if you choose "Don't scare me":) (Guard:) [Alright, you are now under arrest.] (New menu)-> [I'd rather die than go to jail.] (OR) [Okay, I'll come quietly.]

  • Existing convo at any point, even at this point, will cause nothing, but if you choose the line to resist they'll fight you. However it apparently sticks with the guards and whenever you talk to one of them the upgraded menu will pop up.

The IMPORTANT point is that, I chose "Don't scare me" THEN "Okay, I'll come quietly." to see what happens and I was taken to Cidnha Mine, the same cell that you're taken to if you start forsworn conspiracy, except both doors in front of and behind you "Requeire Key" and there is no way you can get out since there is NO beds, I tried waiting for more than 48 hours and also I shouted at "Silver-Blood Guards" but no one came into the cell they just killed me with 3 arrows from behind the bars (Master Difficulty :D)

I also tried the "I'd rather die.." line and then sheathed and unsheathed weapon (twice) to surrender, and chose "I submit. Take me to jail."(other options were: persuade, bribe with Thieves Guild influence, and pay 100 bounty off) and this, surprisingly DID get the forsworn quest running. I'm guessing this adds to bug complexion and difficulties with the quest. — Unsigned comment by 91.99.13.122 (talk) at 15:04 on 7 June 2012

Respawn

Do guards respawn? I wanted to get my murder count up without killing of people who I may later need for quests, so I started killing guards who I assumed would respawn. The ones who stand outside towns seem to respawn, however the ones inside the big towns don't. Now, when I go to Markarth and Whiterun there are no guards at all! Will they ever come back? — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 16:13, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I couldn't control the beast within and went on my own werewolf rampage 20 levels after the first, it takes a while, but the guards do come back, the named npc are a different story.--Br3admax 16:20, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Diplomatic Immunity Comments

A guard said to me 'Word is Elenwen's furious. Big party at the Thalmor Embassy, and one of the guests went someplace they shouldn't. Caused quite a commotion.' Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Confirmed. I've heard this comment in Solitude right after finishing Diplomatic Immunity. I'd add it to the table but I'm not sure if that is the exact wording (it sounds right). GrogGrogGrog 18:30, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
I just heard one say "If I'd been on guard at the Thalmor Embassy, wouldn't no one be disturbing that party." Again in Solitude. GrogGrogGrog 04:15, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

About the Guard dialogue

Is it confirmed that the comments made by guards about race, specifically 'Stay out of trouble, lizard' and 'What do you want... cat?' are used only by Stormcloak-sympathetic Guards? LtGt72 22:15, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

It is now. :) Just checked in the Creation Kit and both lines are Stormcloak-only. Robin Hoodtalk 07:54, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Guard armor post civil war

I took the imperial side all the way through the civil war line and am now "collecting" the guard armies from each hold. The problem is they've been replaced by imperial soldiers. Where do I find them now? — Unsigned comment by 68.187.47.22 (talk) at 00:45 on 21 March 2012 (UTC)

You can check the guards' barracks or the dungeon, I found a few pieces in their whenever I've looked, you might get lucky. The only guaranteed way to find them (besides spawning them in) though is to get the armor before the civil war progresses. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 00:45, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Some Info

"No matter what else happens, the guards will always be grateful for everything you've done." I remember never heard this when my character was thane of Whiterun and Solitude. I only heard this after finishing the Main Quest. I even heard this with Falkreath guard be4 my character was the thane of Falkreath, but only after finishing the Main Quest. So I think it is Main Quest related - everything you've done to save the world.

"Takes a fair bit of strength to carry a greatsword like that. But can you use it?" Heard this when you carry a greatsword at low level, possibly below level 20, even if your two-handed skill is 50+.

"One of the guards said he saw a mage appear out of thin air. Claimed it was one of those Psijic monks. Man's been hitting the skooma, I say." You only need to complete Under Saarthal to hear this.

All of the Guard dialogue

Okay, after going through CSList, I found all of the dialogue for Guards. It's listed below, directly copy-and-pasted:

All added to the page!

This is all of the dialogue for this faction, which all guards are a part of. Look up the formid in between the <a> tags if you want to look up the conditions, but I think for many of them when they say the dialogue is self-evident. Also, I can't tell you just from looking at this whether or not the guards will say this in game. This is a long list, and I'll help go through it, but there's no way I can go through all of this by myself. • JATalk 14:58, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Nevermind, looks like I can do it all by myself. • JATalk 19:12, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Weird dialogue

When I'm visiting Falkreath, one of the guards at the gate will greet me by saying, umm, not very guard-ish stuff, like "Just my luck, stuck in the sticks with this crazy old woman." Once he was talking about a song and that he grew up by hearing it. So far it has been the same guard who's been saying those. However, I'm wondering that is this a bug of some kind or just a very, very rare dialogue? Kuura 21:47, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Both lines of dialogue are Falkreath-specific. The second line of dialogue goes,
"I grew up hearing songs about Eyldi the Bear! She wrestled a storm out of the sky!".
It's rather uncommon to hear the city-specific dialogue, but it does happen; for example, anyone who's been in Whiterun for more than five minutes has probably heard the line, "Need a blade? You should talk to Adrianne, at the forge." Falkreath has only those two lines as city-specific, making hearing either of them a rather rare occurrence. • JATalk 19:18, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Filling in some gaps

"Jarl's been looking for someone who ain't superstitious though. Be lookin' for a fool if you ask me."

this dialog was used by the guards in Morthal when they directed you to the Jarl to start the quest Laid to Rest.

"The Empire didn't think we could take the Reach, but here we are." Liberating the Reach for the Stormcloaks will generate this dialog.

Maybe this could help with some gaps in the tables.

Guard dialogue missing?

How much of the dialogue is missing? I Have never heard a guard comment on things such as my Thaneship or the nighttime.

The Kid And the Guard

I walked into some NPC's house- making sure they were not for any quests- and killed them. then a kid walks in to my surprise and says what any kid says. But then he says something after that that disturbs me greatly. Tell me if you have experienced this or not, or if it's even meant to be dialog.

Kid: Ah! Dead body!

Guard: Such a shame.

Kid: Can I eat it?

Guard: No lollygaggin'

I'm not even putting this up for humor, I'm serious. If anyone knows why the kid said that, please tell me. — Unsigned comment by 76.183.241.163 (talk) at 00:45 on 15 July 2012

I've just searched the dialogue entries in CSList, and there's nothing related to any of the first three lines anywhere. The last line is standard guard dialogue. If you're playing the PC version, it might be something from a mod. If you're playing on XBox or PS, this shouldn't be anywhere in the game. ABCface 01:30, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
I am sure that I have heard kids say "Ah! Dead body!" on my PS3. Pigdestroyer232 14:04, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
I've just done another search, and found this:
  • The child Eirid plays a "game" with Assur, and will say to the player "Eirid and I are playing Hunt the Elf. It's my job to find the Elf, and kill it dead."
  • Runa Fair-Shield in Honorhall Orphanage says "Grelod is dead! Aventus did it! Ha ha ha ha ha!" after completing the related quest.
  • Samuel says "Hooray! Grelod the Kind is dead at last! We're saved!" (same scenario)
  • Francois Beaufort says "I can't believe it! Grelod is dead! She's really dead!"
  • Hroar says "Someone has killed Grelod! Ha ha ha ha ha!" or " Whoa! They killed Grelod! Ha ha ha ha ha!"
Those are the only child-related dialogue lines I can find with the word "dead" (two of which don't even include that particular word). Then there's:
  • There's a world interaction you can witness which includes the line "You can take it over my dead body!"
So, unless the spelling in the game is off, or unless there's different wording, I can't find this in game-data anywhere. If you hear/see it again, can you post exactly what it says, word-for-word, spelled exactly as it is in-game? ABCface 14:25, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
I hear "Ah! Dead body!" and "Such a shame." alot, its what they say when they see a dead body. "No lollygaggin'" is just generic dialogue. Im not sure about "Can I eat it?" I don't recall hearing that one before, but it was unlikely to have been caused by the dead body, unless it was related to a mod perhaps. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 14:38, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
I think the game-data in the cslist is not exhaustive, because (like Kimi mentioned above) I have heard "Ah! Dead body!" and "Such a shame." lots of times before. I just had a random encounter with a thief in Riverwood, trying to break into a house. After I killed him, one of the children walked up and said "Ah! Dead body!" and runs off. As for the second dialogue, it is for adult NPCs when they see a dead body—I heard this plenty of times too. As for the third dialogue... well... I got no clue. Oh, and if it makes any difference, I am playing on PC with v1.6 without mods. ~ Psylocke 15:28, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Actually Psylocke, if anything CSList is more extensive than the Creation Kit, because it includes all of the in-game data, including the data that wasn't included in the final game. It also includes it in a convenient database format, and every entry is indexed by many, many parameters, so you can quickly search and find what you're looking for (and then some). Just because ABCface didn't find it doesn't mean it's the fault of CSList.
CSList fanboyism aside, I believe that ABCface was only listing phrases that children say. I did, however, find some of the lines in question:
  • 000a9b65: "Agh, dead body!" (only spoken by children).
  • 000a9b69: "Such a shame." (can be spoken by any civilian or guard)
The line "Can I eat it?", as we've determined, is from a mod, because it doesn't exist anywhere in the game. • JAT 19:19, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

() Apparently I just suck at searching CSList. :P Thanks for finding these, Jak! ABCface 20:27, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

I am not so sure that the "Can I eat it?" phrase is from a mod. I encountered that phrase (or a very similar line) in my game once and I have not modded my game at all. It was in Riverwood. One of the children made the comment in the aftermath of an altercation resulting from an accidental chicken death (before guards so no surrender possible). I thought the comment was over the corpse of the chicken rather than the surrounding bodies so it sounded strange but not disturbing.
Why it cannot be easily found in the CSlist would appear to be related to idiosyncrasies of the search function. When I searched dialogue for "eat" I came up with less than 50 entries. I checked through them all but they were unrelated so I tried searching "eat it." Theoretically this should not have turned up any results that the previous search had not already found but it did. The two new entries lead me to a conversation that had several other uses of "eat" which also had not been turned up in the initial search. I do not know why the search function behaved that way but it may be to soon to dismiss the phrase as not being in the game. Coronus 03:12, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
I think you're right about the searching thing. I noticed that one of the four Grelod-related comments by children didn't come up in my dialogue search of "dead" but the two others with the word did. I figured it was just a fluke, but if you experienced the same thing, I guess that's not the case. -ABCface 03:17, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Huh, well what do you know. I just tried out your example Coronus, and found the same issue. Interestingly, as far as I can tell, any of them that begin with 0x0001 are correctly listed on both searches, yet any that begin with 0x0002 or 0x0003 (and so on) aren't. • JAT 07:10, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
