Anuriel

Anuriel is a Wood Elf and the steward to Jarl Laila Law-Giver of Riften. She is usually found at the Jarl's side in Mistveil Keep and will sleep from midnight to 8am in her bedroom just beyond the doorway to the inner part of the Keep. She is the girlfriend of Unmid Snow-Shod, and you can overhear a conversation between the two about sneaking out for a "training" session. Should the Imperial Legion take control of Riften and have Jarl Laila replaced, Anuriel will be exiled to the Palace of the Kings.

Once the Jarl grants you permission, Anuriel can sell you a house called Honeyside in the city for 8,000 gold. In order to get permission you must complete the quest Supply and Demand.

If you side with the Imperial Legion in the civil war, you will be sent by Legate Rikke to find material you could use to attempt to blackmail her to obtain information that could assist in the Imperial takeover of the Rift. In the process, it is discovered that Anuriel is actually a Thieves Guild infiltrator put in place by Maven Black-Briar to manipulate Jarl Laila into defending Maven's interests and keep her blind to the activity of the Thieves Guild.

Anuriel wears a set of fine clothes and a pair of fine boots. She is equipped with a leveled dagger which can be up to elven quality, and carries a selection of upper-class loot and gold.

Dialogue[edit]

Her greetings:

"Welcome to Mistveil Keep. I'm Jarl Laila's steward, Anuriel."
"As Riften's Steward I'm afraid I can provide only limited assistance, but speak your mind."
"If you're here to report any instances of corruption, be confident that we're handling these rumors accordingly."

Greetings when exiled:

"I'm afraid my days as the steward of Riften has come to an end."
"The Imperials now control Riften and have placed Maven Black-Briar on the Jarl's throne."
"Perhaps the Stormcloaks might rally to take back Riften one day. Only time will tell."

When spoken to:

What do you do around here?
"As steward, I serve as an intermediary between the Jarl and her subjects. I also handle the less important and day-to-day policies that effect daily life in Riften. Lately I've had my hands full suppressing these ridiculous accusations of corruption in the keep."
What are the rumors of corruption you mentioned?
"There are those that believe the Jarl does nothing for this city... that it's corrupt and run by the Black-Briar family. I can assure you that this is entirely false. We are fully in control of everything."
Tell me about the Thieves Guild.
"I'd hardly call them a Guild. More like unorganized rabble. In fact, I wouldn't say they were a threat at all. No, our resources should be spent on preparations for invasion."

Her goodbye:

"You're welcome in Riften as long as you continue to obey our laws."

Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]

Compelling Tribute[edit]

"Not here. Come with me. Stay close and the guards will leave you alone."

She will lead you back into her room:

"I suppose you're here to extort something from me? Is that it? Well, what is it you want?"
You rebels are doing a fine job destroying yourselves. Soldiers running errands?
"So. You're an Imperial spy... Interesting... I have no strong love for the Stormcloaks but I can't say I'm all that fond of the Empire, either. This war of yours makes it difficult for a resourceful woman to advance her interests. Perhaps we can find a way for both of us to prosper from this unfortunate discovery?"
What if this letter were made public?
"It would ruin me. I have a good thing going here. The Jarl benefits from my more creative arrangements as well, though it'd be impossible for her to admit that. Laila is a simple and traditional woman. Which makes it easy to manipulate her, but impossible to regain her graces once offended. Look. Perhaps we could come to some kind of agreement?"

Either option leads to:

What kind of agreement did you have in mind?
"What if I told you about a large shipment of gold and weapons?"
Go on, I'm listening.
"Oh, no. I'm no fool. You'll learn what you need to know once we've come to an agreement."
How much are we talking about?
"Enough to make a significant difference in the war."
And what about something for me, right now? (Persuade)
"Well I... I suppose I'm not much left a choice in the matter, am I? Very well. I trust a hefty purse of septims will suffice?"
All right, it's a deal. Where can I find this shipment?
"They're taking it by wagon to Windhelm. If you hurry, you'll catch them before they get far. It'll be a fairly slow moving caravan. The shipment is quite heavy, and guarded by many men. Now, let's pretend we never had this discussion."

Conversations[edit]

Unmid may discuss the jarl's safety with Anuriel:

Unmid: "Anuriel, would you please stop declaring that the city is safe for the Jarl to roam? You and I both know that isn't true."
Anuriel: "I would never knowingly place Laila in danger, you know that too. Why do you always question my judgment? You don't trust me."
Unmid: "I trust you, I'm just concerned about her safety. That's all. Don't be angry with me."
Anuriel: "I'm not angry with you. Tell you what, lover. Meet me in my chambers later and we can discuss the situation in private."

Anuriel can also be seen talking with Unmid about a "combat training" session. However, she will sound unusually seductive:

Anuriel: "Unmid, my sweet. Are we still meeting later for... combat training?"
Unmid: "Of course. Your training isn't complete yet."
Anuriel: "I look forward to it then."

Laila can regularly be seen discussing court matters with her steward Anuriel:

Laila: "Anuriel, a word please."
Anuriel: "Yes, my lady?"
Laila: "It's been brought to my attention that the poison known as skooma may be present in our city. What do you know of this?"
Anuriel: "I believe it to be a falsehood perpetrated by the Empire in order to weaken the citizen's [sic] confidence in your ability to rule."
Laila: "Excellent, then they'll [sic] be no need to devote any resources to stopping it. Thank you, Anuriel. That will be all."
Anuriel: "My lady, Maven Black-Briar has sent word that she requires your seal in order to expand her shipments into Morrowind."
Laila: "But of course! Tell her she'll have it. Maven is one of the few people I can trust and I'd be delighted to give her my blessing."
Anuriel: "Yes, my lady. I will pass the good news on to her."

Unused Dialogue[edit]

  • Anuriel was supposed to tell you about the Black-Briar family when asked; however, the conditions for the topic will never be met, so her praise will never be heard:
Tell me about the Black-Briar family.
"Maven Black-Briar is the owner of the largest and most profitable business in all Skyrim, the Black-Briar Meadery. We're pleased to have her in Riften. She brings stability, opportunities for employment and strategic value to our city."

Notes[edit]

  • Even though Anuriel is a Thieves Guild infiltrator planted by Maven Black-Briar, if the Imperials win the war, she will be exiled to the Palace of the Kings instead of moving to The Ragged Flagon.
