Skill Boosts[edit]

  • There are a couple places where you can raise your skills by watching two combatants fight.
  • Some quest rewards and easter eggs also provide skill boosts.

Is there a page where all this quests and places listed? --Den 03:29, 14 September 2006 (EDT)

There is now. Probably incomplete, though. --TheRealLurlock 11:25, 14 September 2006 (EDT)

Max Level[edit]

Just as an interesting note: I managed a permanent Blade of 103 by not doing the Origin of the Gray Prince quest until I was already a Master of Blade. Not that it helps at all, but it's a fun conversation piece. Korvac 16:52, 5 November 2006 (EST)

Using the console, you can get a Max (skill and player) level of 255, if at any point it goes up, it will reset to 1, you can then eather normally train that skill or use the console again to increase the skill. The console command (for skills) is: advskill <skill> <# of increases>. and you dont need the < >, its just to tell you whats there. the console command (for player level) is: advlevel <level>. you can also do this for attributes except the console command is: setav <attribute> <# of attribute>, same with player level and skill, they can only go up to 255, if they go over 255, they will reset. and you can fortify your attributes and skill over 255, but dont get anyskill increases. xXPATEXx ````

That's odd, I got one of 136, by saving all my skill books, and it has an effect on my damage done.. -Anonymous — Unsigned comment by 74.248.201.231 (talk) on 9 October 2008
You have a mod installed that alters the levelling system, am I right? -Xmlninja 19:09, 9 October 2008 (EDT)
Must have. Skill books don't have any effect once your skills reach level 100 either. –RpehTCE 01:27, 10 October 2008 (EDT)
Sorry, I meant 116(20 0f it was items), but I'm not using any mods as I have the 360 version. I used the herma mora book, and all the blade skill books I could find, and some quest rewards. - Anonymous — Unsigned comment by 74.248.201.231 (talk) on 10 October 2008
That sounds more like it. +10 from Hermaeus Mora, +3 from the Gray Prince, +2 from the Scales of PJ... but I dunno where you're getting the last point. Do tell! –RpehTCE 14:27, 10 October 2008 (EDT)
I just checked my skills page, says I got 2 from Night Mother's Blessing, 3 from Grey price training. The other must have been from reading a skill book like Fire and Darkness. - Anonymous — Unsigned comment by 74.248.201.231 (talk) on 10 October 2008
I feel like an idiot, reason I do more damage is that my weapons are at 125% condition, not ridiculous blade score. -Anonymous — Unsigned comment by 74.248.201.231 (talk) on 10 October 2008
Ah! That's okay. It happens to all of us at some point :) –RpehTCE 16:18, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

Multiple Skill-point Losses[edit]

It seems that when you have a really high bounty (like from killing an innocent), the loss of skill points for staying in jail is more than just one. I lost 10 (no, that's not a typo) skill points for killing someone and then staying in jail. I can't be 100% sure that a high bounty was the cause of the multiple skill-point losses, though. Can anybody else confirm for certain that that's what causes it? --Robin Hood 20:06, 13 May 2007 (EDT)

It's the high bounty. Skill points affected = Bounty / 100 (with a max of 10) as far as I can tell. It IS one point per day spent as the article states, but the length of your sentence is increased by your bounty. --Deathbane27 20:33, 13 May 2007 (EDT)

Is it possible to gain extra levels by intentionally having a skill nerfed in this manner? Say one of my main skills is decresed by 10. Couldn't i go out and practice it to level up? I'll test it once i get my character up to his max level, but 'til then, can anyone else provide some insight? -Scxe

I've never done that, but given that your skill is 'permanently' lowered (as opposed to being lowered by a drain/damage effect that can be removed), I would imagine that this would work. --Gaebrial 03:50, 22 February 2008 (EST)

Removing Enchantments[edit]

Okay I know this may not be the right place but I just found Fin-Gleam and I already enchanted my Raistlin Majere character's Red Silk Robes and Red Silk Hood and I want to remove the enchantments. Is that even possible? 70.49.204.73 00:01, 10 January 2008 (EST)

Sorry, no. You could always give yourself another copy of the unenchanted item by using the console if you're on the PC. –RpehTCE 05:14, 10 January 2008 (EST)

Quickly Raise Your Alchemy[edit]

to quickly raise alchemy duplicate rat meat and bread and make detect life i went from 60-100 in 10 minutes — Unsigned comment by Bobjim (talkcontribs)

It's easier just to make potions from food, as they are easy to get hold of.-Volthawk 07:44, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Vampire skills[edit]

After I became a vampire on my Kahjiit character, I noticed that I was now a master in sneak. I don't think that I was before. I'm pretty sure I was an expert. Now it reads that I am a master in sneak. Does this mean that while a vampire my sneak won't skill up anymore and that skills gained by vampirism are considered base skills and not magical effects, or was I actually a master before vampirism? I'm a bit confused on this. I plan on curing my vampirism eventually, but I don't want the sneaking in the dark brotherhood quests to go to waste and since I'm on 360 I can't ever become a vampire again. I'm not really sure what to do. --Mole126Talk 19:55, 04 March 2008 (EST)

If you are still trying to figure this out, you should check the article on Free Skill Boosts. Yes, the vampirism skill boosts effectively change your base statistics. Without curing your vampirism you can feed, which will reduce the skill boosts to +5. Otherwise, you need to wait until you cure your vampirism. --NepheleTalk 01:31, 20 April 2008 (EDT)

Governing?[edit]

I have had oblivion for the most part of a year, and I STILL cant figure out what a governed skill means. Thanks, Jetty78.145.89.208 05:46, 8 December 2008 (EST)

Idk[edit]

all my strength and willpower skills were at 100 but there down to the 20's and i cant level them back up should i jus glitch them or is there a right way?????????????? — Unsigned comment by 70.115.232.10 (talk) at 10:45 on 29 April 2009

I have the same problem my strength skill was 97 and a guy with a sword that had a enchantment to drain strength hit me with it and now its 23 and i don't know how to raise it any more. WHAT SHOULD I DO !!!!!!!!!!!!! — Unsigned comment by 216.170.197.48 (talk) at 05:12 on 18 June 2010
If it was a Drain Skill effect, and you're not in combat at the moment, often waiting it out is easiest; otherwise, use Dispel. If it's a Damage Attribute effect, use Restore Attribute. Finally, if you're more famous than infamous, you can go to a chapel in any city and activate the altar and it will heal everything.
On another note, this type of question is probably better asked, and will get faster responses, in a chatroom or forum. Robin Hoodtalk 15:40, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Drain Skill training[edit]

can you drain a master skill just before reading a skill book in order to get the skill boost, just like with trainers, or not? — Unsigned comment by 87.115.162.85 (talk) on 13 June 2009

Not. --Timenn < talk > 16:21, 13 June 2009 (EDT)

Save some time[edit]

i found that while increasing any magic based skill, if you hold block with some kind of wepon or your fists drawn you can cast spells quicker... you simply cast the spell repeatedly while doing this... i think it just cuts the animation so that the spell can be activated again. the time difference may not seem like much at start, but when you need to level up 80 levels in illusion restoration destruction etc... it is a great glitch. and this does work on the 360, since even though you cannot repeatedly cast spells, it does hovever stop the spell animation short. — Unsigned comment by 72.197.42.119 (talk) on 5 August 2009

We know, thanks. It's already described here. –rpehTCE 07:39, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

The spell is even faster if not cast on ones own self173.14.21.221 22:09, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

NPC compliments[edit]

What determines which 70+-point skills are complimented by NPCs? I assumed it was random, but despite having Master in 12 skills and Expert in 5, NPCs nowadays seem to only compliment my Sneak and Restoration prowess (and have NEVER complimented me about any other magic skill, or Light Armor, or Hand-to-Hand, or Security)...is there any determining factor besides just the skill level? Shashakiro 00:05, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Sounds like a Construction Set answer, but from what I have seen, it seems that at each encounter the dialogue options are chosen by random. So each time you walk up to them, the check on the dialogue chooses the Sneak etc. However, I don't know why it would be only those two. –Elliot talk 00:20, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Mysterious fist...[edit]

Sorry if this is glaringly obvious and I'm missing something, but what does the fist mean in the Skills menu? For example, on some of them (say for example the Strength skill was highlighted) you'd get the little slidy menu saying you're at Journeyman or whatever and what Strength means, but in the bottom right-hand corner of this sometimes there's a little fist with a number by it, like 2 or 5 or something. What does this mean? Spikelovesmetal 12:52, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

It shows you the amount of damage you will do when you attack with your fists (Hand-to-hand). --Gaebrial 08:30, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Ahh, that makes a lot more sense, thanks! Spikelovesmetal 10:24, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Upgrading player bug[edit]

Hello. After completing Thieves, Dark brotherhood and Fighters guild quests, after being a Vampire and successful curing, my skills has been silently reset or something like that! While player has all master skills and high attributes, he has the same skills like a little girl. For example: before that quests i was able to kill bandit from silent mode for one arrow, but now after first shot only small amount of his HP decreaseas and i need minimum 5 arrows to kill him! Another example: Before that bug i was able to beat the bandit with akaviri daikatana for ~4 strokes or for ~2 big strokes (when holding mouse button), but now i can kill him only after ~15 hard strokes or after ~30 normal strokes! I tried to use console commands to upgrade level, attributes and skills of my player to 255, but there's still that "weak skills" bug. What can be the problems?

P.S: That thing looks like appeared after turning into vampire.

Whoops, this looks like was because of high player level! Wierd leveling.

Hey, some skills are boosted by the Vamprisism, like Illusion. But I'm not too sure about reseting the whole skill, try using this console command: advskill <skill name> <qty>. You don't need the <>, I was just telling you what goes there. Reply if it Doesn't work.PATE KNUCKLEHEAD 14:48, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Negative Skills[edit]

It is possible to have skills in the negative, I got the diseise tunnal cough and by sneak became -3.--Arch-Mage Matt 00:51, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm 99% sure your skills fall to 0 and that's it. --SerCenKing Talk 08:55, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Stealth Page[edit]

There are special pages for combat and magic, but not for stealth. Is there a reason for this? I know most of the stealth tips are on the Sneak skill page, but it's not the only page about staying out of sight. Maybe we could link to the detection formula or the burglary page. I know this isn't a big deal, but it's still an imbalanced presentation of specialization. Pardon my perfectionism. --Zander490 19:06, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Relative Usefulness[edit]

Would a section denoting the best skills be appropriate? Basically, Id mean something like: "Alteration Almost Totally Makes Acrobatics, Light Armor, Heavy Armor and Security useless." "Illusion Renders Speechcraft fully pointless, almost fully replaces Sneak in most situations, removes cumbersome torches, and can paralyze to essentially win most fights instantly." "Destruction trumps Blade, Blunt, Marksman and Hand-to-Hand, due to versitility, no repair cost, and Mana regenerates while weapon health/charges do not."

I ask this because whenever I go to make a new character, I really want to make something unique but..."Illusion, Alteration, Blade, Destruction, Mysticism, Restoration, Marksman" seems to be by far the most efficient way to play. Sneak can substitute Destruction if you want toe critical bonus too. Almsot every other skill seems completely impractical because of some huge glaring negative.

Alchemy is the most obvious problem as a major skill, for instance. 74.128.56.194 00:29, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

No matter how you say it, it always comes down to personal opinion. There are no better skills, as it is entirely how you play the game. --DKong27 Talk Cont 01:11, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Absolutely agree with DKong27. For instance, I typically play a stealth-based character using Marksman and Sneak, so I'd disagree with almost everything you wrote. It's all about preference, and that's why we keep opinions off articles. rpeh •TCE 10:03, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

How many points are needed to increase a skill once?[edit]

I've noticed, all around the site, that certain actions can increase your skills by X number of points. Is there a way to determine how many of these points are needed for a single skill increase? (i.e. How many potions would need to be created for my Alchemy skill to go from, say, 93 to 94)? Schiffy (talk) 19:52, 14 September 2012 (GMT)

You may want to look at this page. It goes into great detail regarding this. — ABCface 19:57, 14 September 2012 (GMT)
