Question[edit]

"Bound Weapons can only be unequipped under certain circumstances involving the use of Runestones."

I'm not sure I understand this comment... even using a runestone bound weapon, you can always hit the unequip button, and it just goes away. What is meant by only "certain circumstances"? --Nephele 16:34, 9 August 2006 (EDT)

I think it means "unequipped without disappearing". Under normal circumstances, unequipping makes it disappear, but it's possible to keep bound weapons in your inventory by hitting one of the Runestones that gives you bound weapons while currently holding one of your own. I think it may also be possible to keep one by repairing or enchanting it. (This is similar to a bug in Morrowind, where if you enchanted a piece of apparel to give you a permanent bound item, and used it until it broke, you could end up with extra bound items that you can't get rid of.) --TheRealLurlock 19:20, 9 August 2006 (EDT)

Never tried enchanting, repairing works. Repair the weapon, drop it, unequip or wait for the spell to expire: you'll have a permanent item on the ground, 0 weight. Note that bound sword is a claymore and it has a base damage of 29, i.e. higher than any other vanilla weapons, including Umbra sword. Daedric claymore has a base damage of 26, maybe the higher bound sword damage is a developer's mistake, maybe not.

About its length of summon[edit]

Looking at the spell, i realize that it actually onlys lasts for 15 seconds. That's not exactly very long is it? I thought it would only disappear once you unequip it? So are bound weapons really worth it? — Unsigned comment by 76.17.35.80 (talk)

Permanent Bound Items[edit]

You can keep bound weapons or armor forever by casting a damage weapon/armor spell on yourself, repairing the weapon fully, and then dropping it. Wait for the timer to run out and pick it up again it weight Zero and will say Bound Item

Hi, I did the permanent bound items expliot, but putting them in containers seems to cause a problem. It brings up the old items dissapearing from containers..but I only have like 5 items in there and they start to dissapear from the list. Naturally taking them all out, I confirmed that they are still there, just invisible. Anyone else have this problem, anything to fix it?— Unsigned comment by Piercethetruth (talkcontribs)
This is a glitch in vanilla Oblivion, and doesn't just affect bound weapons. When you look inside containers (including corpses), some items are sometimes not visible, while other items appear twice. As you mention, doing a 'take all' confirms that the items are actually there, and in the correct number. I don't think there is anyway of fixing it, short of BethSoft fixing the underlying code.--Gaebrial 04:09, 8 November 2007 (EST)
oh really? i just encountered another glitch this time isntead of bound weapons its the weapons from summons that you can disintegrate and pick up and keep permanently, when i store those weapons they "dissapear" but once again doing a take all confirms that its still there. and i only have approximately 15 items in this chest. it would seem that the glitch for dissapearing items in containers happens even with few items if it ivolves glitched items that the game does not intent you to have. can anyone confirm?
lots of pages here talk about getting the unofficial oblivion patch to fix these problems bethesda left out. is it safe to download and have most of the users on this site used it? i have a 360 so not sure if that affects anything. getting kinda tired of some of these glitches cause its such a great game. thanks for any comments. --Piercethetruth 01:18, 13 November 2007 (EST)

Equivalent Weapons[edit]

I guess I don't understand your edit, Varka. Is the equivalent weapon supposed to be the weapon that looks the same as the bound, or does the same damage? Because you linked to the Daedric Warhammer in the Bound Sword row, but that doesn't seem right. If I am missing something here, tell me so I don't look stupid. Figgy 02:11, 23 May 2008 (EDT)

Yeah, I'm also finding it a bit strange. A warhammer is not equivalent to a claymore. And the difference is far more substantial than just the speed difference that is noted under the table. For example, one is a blunt weapon and the other is a blade weapon, meaning that very few characters will have similar in-game damage from the two weapons. I realize that because the bound claymore does more damage than any basic claymore, there is no equivalent basic claymore. However, I don't think that switching weapon types helps readers to understand that connection.
It seems to me that the new column is liable to confuse readers rather than help readers, in which case I'm not sure it should remain in the article. If anything, just a column providing the damage done by the "true" daedric weapon should be able to provide the key information with far less potential for confusion. --NepheleTalk 17:32, 23 May 2008 (EDT)

Save Crash[edit]

  • Saving the game while a bound weapon is equipped can cause the game to crash. This does not apply if the permanent bound item glitch has been applied to the weapon.
I've moved this because after testing a save/load cycle with each of the possible bound items and not had a crash, I think it was a one-off rather than a general problem. If anybody else has the problem, I'd love to hear about it. –RpehTCE 15:44, 28 January 2009 (EST)
Haven't experienced this myself, but I'm not a big user of bound weapons. The problem could occur when saving just as the bound weapon spell is about to expire, or is expiring, and Oblivion gets confused (doesn't take much...) about what weapon the player has equipped. --Gaebrial 05:06, 29 January 2009 (EST)

I have just experienced this glitch. I had a bound dagger and bound gauntlets equipped from an alter, when the enchantment time ran out the game tried to re-equip my sword and gauntlets and crashed. I was able to repeat this multiple times. To fix it I threw my gauntlets and sword on the ground, let the enchantment time run out, then re-equipped my items. 207.118.153.52 03:31, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Fatigue[edit]

They still fatigue you (just checked in game) but not as much as other weapons. –rpehTCE 08:28, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Bound Weapons[edit]

This has turned into a discussion. Moving here until finally resolved.

  • If the player creates a spell to summon two or more bound weapons the ones that are not equipped can be dropped and a permanent, weightless bound weapon is created. This does not seem to work for all weapons though.
  • Verified for at least the PC!
  • The spell mentioned is very possible to create, but it should be noted that it is not possible to create a spell that will grant you a permanent bound axe. To create such a spell, you'll need at least two different summon weapon spells that you are already able to cast.
  • Creating the spell is, thankfully, easy enough. Simply make a spell using both (or more) of these summon effects. The game will read the summon spells in alphabetical order, and implement them as such. The first weapon that is summoned with the spell, will block you from equipping the second, and thus show up in your inventory as unequipped. After that, you simply need to drop the weapon on the ground, and allow (or force by sheathing your weapon) the spell to expire.
  • Note: Because the game implements spell effects in alphabetical order, and the first weapon to be summoned will block the other weapon(s) from being able to equip, it is not possible to create a spell that will allow you to summon a permanent bound axe.
Doesn't work for me on a vanilla PC version. I'll try other tweaks but talk pages are the place to discuss content, not the articles themselves. –rpehTCE 17:57, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Bound Sword most powerful in game?[edit]

I always believed that Umbra and Shadowrend were the most powerful swords in the game. They both have a damage rating of 33 when repaired to 125% and you have 100 strength and blade. However, I just summoned a bound sword and repaired it to 125% and it now has a damage rating of 35. Assuming this is not some kind of glitch then woludn't that mean that a bound sword is the best sword in the game. Im playing on the Xbox360. 79.97.40.245 21:13, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Umbra and Shadowrend are the most powerful one-handed swords in the game. The Bound Sword is a two-handed sword and it does indeed have a higher damage rating at the cost of not being able to use a shield. Masterlocksmith 13:13, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Permanent Bound Axe[edit]

It is possible to create a permanent bound axe. Summon a bound axe and use it in battle so it gets damaged, then repair the ax back to 100 health, then you can drop the axe. Bind Weapon to Target NPC[edit]

The documentation (PS3) mentions the weapon os bound to the “target” and that a bound weapon displaces any other equipped weapon. One usually thinks of a bound weapon as being only for the player, but this suggests an intriguing trick. Could one bind a weapon, say a bow, to an NPC using a spell. If that character has no arrows, would they then be unable to attack for the duration of the spell?
