Gwinas

Gwinas is a Wood Elf noble staying at The Tiber Septim Hotel in the Imperial City's Talos Plaza District. He has a profound interest in the Commentaries on the Mysterium Xarxes. He has traveled all the way from Valenwood, in search of the four rare books. You will encounter him when you reach the related quest's stage 40, where he will be the book collector that has the third volume of The Mythic Dawn Commentaries on special order in the First Edition bookstore.

He will make his appearance in the bookstore (and in the game) the moment you have spoken to the owner, Phintias. After you have convinced him to hand over the book, he will go back to the hotel and stay there. He will sleep in his room every night between 10pm and 6am, and then wander around the hotel lobby all day long, only interrupted by his breakfast between 8am and 10am and dinner between 6pm and 8pm, both of which he will take seated in one of the chairs in the lobby.

He wields a steel dagger and wears a pair of gold trimmed shoes along with the rare red silk robes. He's also in possession of a random piece of jewelry, a note, and a considerable amount of gold.

Dialogue[edit]

Greetings[edit]

If spoken to while on his way to pick up his book from Phintias, Gwinas will refuse to speak to you and will grow increasingly irate if you continue to greet him:

"I'm sorry, but I'm late for an appointment. I've no time to talk now." (-10 disposition towards player)

"You must not have heard me the first time. Good day!" (-10 disposition towards player)

"Are you deaf? Leave me alone!" (-1 disposition towards player on every subsequent attempt)

Conversation with Phintias[edit]

Once Gwinas arrives at First Edition, he will speak with Phintias:

Gwinas: "I'm here for my book. Mankar Camoran's "Commentaries," Volume Three."

If you have not obtained the book from Phintias, he will hand it over:

Phintias: "Ah, of course. Here you go. Keep us in mind for any future needs!"
Gwinas: "Thank you, thank you! I can't tell you how long I've been looking for this book!" (+20 disposition towards Phintias)

However, if you have purchased or stolen the book from Phintias, Gwinas will be less pleased and will leave the store empty-handed:

Phintias: "Ah, about that. You see ... I don't have it any more. Terribly sorry. A full refund, of course..."
Gwinas: "You can be sure I won't be back! I've never been treated so shabbily in all my life! Good day, sir!" (-20 disposition towards Phintias)

Commentaries, Volume Three[edit]

If spoken to about the book prior to his arrival at First Edition: "I'm sorry, do I know you? I have a copy waiting for me at a bookstore, but it is not for sale. I've waited a long time to get that book."[verification needed — can this line be heard in-game?]

If Gwinas has obtained the book: "Have you been following me? Leave me alone! That book is mine!"

I want to buy it from you. Reply A1
Just give me the book and I'll leave. Reply A2
Tell me about the Mythic Dawn cult. Reply A3

If you have obtained the book from Phintias: "I don't want to talk about it. I'm still very angry at Phintias. He promised me he would get one for me. I came all the way from Valenwood for it!"

Player Response Result
Phintias sold me Volume 3. Reply A6
I stole Volume 3 from Phintias. Reply A7
I'm looking for Volume 4. Reply A8

Once Gwinas has told you how to obtain Volume Four: "I told you, I'm done with those books. I'm sorry I ever got mixed up with those maniacs!"

Reply A1[edit]

"It isn't for sale. You'll have to find a copy somewhere else."

Tell me about the Mythic Dawn cult. Reply A3

Reply B1[edit]

"Very well. I can see you're familiar with Mankar Camoran's "Commentaries." I know that daedric cults are not quite the thing socially, but that's just foolish prejudice and superstition. For the adventurous, open-minded thinker, daedric worship holds many rewards."

Player Response Result
They killed the Emperor, you fool! Reply B4

Reply B2[edit]

If Gwinas has obtained the book: "I beg your pardon? You presume to tell me about daedric cults?"

If you already have the book: "Oh, really? You think the Mythic Dawn is the first daedric cult I've encountered?"

In either case, he will continue: "I'll have you know that I've visited the Shrine of Sheogorath during the Festival of the Mad! I've spoken with Hermaeus Mora beneath the full moons! I've..."

Player Response Result
They killed the Emperor, you fool! Reply B4

Reply B4[edit]

"What?! The Mythic Dawn were the ones...? You have to believe me! I truly had no idea. I mean, I knew they were a daedric cult. Mankar Camoran's views on Mehrunes Dagon are fascinating, revolutionary even... But to murder the Emperor... Mara preserve us!"

Player Response Result
You'd better give me that book. Reply C1
You'd better tell me what you know. Reply C3

Reply C1[edit]

"Yes. Of course! I don't want anyone to think I had anything to do with their insane plots! Here. Volume 3 is yours. What you do with it is your business."

Player Response Result
I need the fourth book as well. Reply C2

Reply C3[edit]

"Yes. Of course! Anything to help. I really know very little. They contacted me. I suppose they learned that I was looking for the third and fourth volumes. I've never actually met any of them, I swear!"

Player Response Result
I need the fourth book as well. Reply C2

Reply C2[edit]

"You can only get Volume 4 directly from a member of the Mythic Dawn. I had set up a meeting with the Sponsor, as he called himself. Here, take this note they gave me. It tells you where to go. I don't want anything else to do with the Mythic Dawn."

He will then hand over the Note to Gwinas and the quest will be updated.

Notes[edit]

  • Gwinas has some dialogue that could only be heard in the spectator section of the Chorrol Arena, but since this location was cut from the final game it remains unused: "Why do I come to the Arena? Honestly? I love the way the combatants move. It's like an... an erotic dance. The bodies, the sweat, the... oh. I, um..."
