Velas Manor (right)
Gavis Velas

The Velas clan is an ancient family of Dunmer that lives in the province of Morrowind. They are one of the thirty revered families of Vvardenfell[1] and are a sub-faction of the Great House Dres.[2] The clan are descendants of accomplished mages such as Malkur Valos and Gavis Velas.[3] The Velas Ancestral Tomb is located on a beach in Azura's Coast, between the town of Suran and the ancient stronghold Telasero.[2]

History[edit]

With the other twenty-nine ancient families of Vvardenfell, the Velas clan hid the Library of Andule, the secret repository of the Great Houses and placed a clue in their ancestral tomb.[4] Its location remained a secret for many years until Bradyn of the Library of Vivec enlisted an outlander to find the tombs and uncover it in 2E 582. They were able to find all thirty tombs and find the lost Library of Andule.[5]

An off-branch ancestor to the modern-day Velas clan was Malkur Valos, the talented son of a powerful mage who was raised by a Golden Saint in the Shivering Isles. Years later after moving back to Tamriel, he quickly became acquainted with Vanus Galerion and the Mages Guild.[3] Nadene Velas was a character in The Lusty Argonian Footman, a play that shares the same name with an inn in Lilmoth.[6]

In 2E 582, Lolethys Velas was a priestess of the Divines that regularly preached in front of the Temple of the Winds in Gonfalon Bay, the main city in the Systres Archipelago.[7] Llaalam Velas was a member of the Camonna Tong and was based in Cammonnaruhn, a fortress in the southernmost part of the Telvanni Peninsula.[8]

In 3E 427, Gavis Velas became a well-renowned mage and lived with his brother Ovis in the Godsreach district of Mournhold. While Gavis lived a humble life, Ovis liked to coast off his brother's success and take credit for his accomplishments. One day, while preaching his "power" to the masses, he chose an adventurer to demonstrate his wrath on but suffice it to say, he was quickly dealt with. Upon hearing the news of his brother's death, Gavis challenged the adventurer to a duel and hoped to avenge him. Although the battle was much more difficult, Gavis was also defeated by the adventurer.[9]

At around the same time, Ereven Velas was a bandit witchhunter and follower of Llaren Terano, a powerful sorcerer and Molag Bal worshipper who converted Rotheran in Sheogorad into a gladiatorial arena to put slaves against each other.[10] Thanelen Velas was a smith in service of the Balmora Camonna Tong and earned the rank of Tough. Thanelen was involved in an incident and died that year. It is unknown if he was killed for allegedly killing the Hlaalu noble, Ralen Hlaalo or if he died with other Camonna Tong members when Larrius Varro of Moonmoth Legion Fort orchestrated their deaths.[11]
