Dwynnen is the capital of the eponymous region in the Iliac Bay region of southern High Rock.[1] The city has been around since at least the late First Era and has served as the capital ever since.[1][2]
Layout and Geography[edit]
Dwynnen is a walled city[1][2] but its precise location is unclear.[Note 1] Some sources suggest that the city is located inland in deep woodland country, near the border toward Urvaius,[1] but others place it on the Iliac Bay coast.[3][4] The land is typically verdant all year long, that is until the winter comes along and brings snowfall[3] and sleet.[4] Even though it is the barony's knightly order, the Order of the Raven did not have a garrison in Dwynnen city.[1]

History[edit]
When or where Dwynnen was founded is unclear,[Note 1] though its appearance in the historical fiction, 2920, The Last Year of the First Era suggests it was active at this point. One of its most well-known residents was Cassyr Whitley, who is remembered for his service in the Four-Score War for Vivec. In 1E 2920, Lady Corda, a Redguard initiate from Hegathe was brought across the Iliac Bay to Dwynnen, where people witnessed her procession before she left for the Imperial City.[2]
In 3E 253, a date largely agreed upon by archivists,[5] the Nightmare Host, an undead army in service of the Camoran Usurper traveled north to the Iliac Bay and conquered Dwynnen.[6] The lich that led them took residence in Castle Wightmoor and ruled over Dwynnen's people. According to legend, on the 5th of Sun's Dawn, Othrok emerged from the wilderness with an army of men and animals, blessed by the gods, and defeated the Nightmare Host in the Battle of Wightmoor, thus liberating Dwynnen.[5]
Since then, the barony expanded south to the Bay coast and went to all-out war with the Camoran Usurper. The invader's armies had finally reached the Iliac Bay in 3E 267 and the Battle of Firewaves commenced.[5] The capital of Dwynnen was directly affected in the battle. Refugees from as far south as southern Hammerfell traveled north and sought safety in the city. As the city was besieged, hazardous smoke and fire filled the streets, and the seaport was set ablaze. Othrok's guards and warriors searched the city for survivors and guided them to Castle Wightmoor.[3] Othrok and his allied regions were able to defeat the Camoran Usurper that year. Othrok's liberation of Dwynnen is celebrated on the anniversary as Othroktide.[5]
By the late Third Era, the Barony of Dwynnen hosted the School of Julianos. In 3E 417, when the Miracle of Peace occurred, the Dwynnen region was annexed by the Kingdom of Wayrest, at the time ruled jointly by King Eadwyre and Queen Barenziah.[7]
