Ashalmimilkalai is a ruined Daedric temple found in Vvardenfell, an island in the province of Morrowind. Situated in the coastal swamps of the Bitter Coast, it is an old temple dedicated to the Daedric Prince of Destruction, Mehrunes Dagon, one of the Four Corners of the House of Troubles.

History[edit]

Circa 2E 582, a Dunmer noble by the name of Rilos Lenith was evicted from his home in Narsis in the Deshaan region of Morrowind's mainland. Down on his luck, he made his way to the island of Vvardenfell to Ashalmimilkala with his pack guar.[1] Though the entrance to the ruins had been sealed off with rubble, he began squatting outside the ruins with other occupants who could be observed praying to Dagon.[2] That same year, the Vestige visited the site and recovered a skyshard that had fallen to the ruins from Aetherius.[3]

Circa 3E 427, the ancient Altmer Carecalmo, who had served Uriel Septim V and would later be implicated in aiding Jagar Tharn's impersonation of Uriel Septim VII, dwelled within Ashalmimilkala as the shrine's priest. Having long sought to slay him, the Imperial Cult sent an agent by the name of Dro'farahn Stiff-Neck to carry out his execution. However, he met his end while trying to complete this task. Angered and armed with the powerful Scroll of Fiercely Roasting, his apprentice Urjorad tracked him down to the ruins of Ashalmimilkala, but he was promptly outmatched and killed by Carecalmo and his bodyguard. The Imperial Cult sent another agent to recover the scroll and kill Carecalmo, but at the same time, Dagon's cultist had angered another force to be reckoned with.[4] As the Dark Brotherhood attempted to gain a foothold within the island of Vvardenfell, they negotiated with cultists of Mehrunes Dagon so they could be sheltered by them in their occupied Daedric ruins throughout Vvardenfell. Eno Hlaalu, grandmaster of the Morag Tong, took notice and began ordering an assassin to wipe out the strongholds of the Brotherhood. Eno heard about Carecalmo's influence with the cult of Mehrunes Dagon and ordered the agent to offer an ultimatum to the Altmer to stop providing refuge for the Brotherhood. However, the cultist attacked the agent of Mephala for daring to command him.[5] With two groups desiring for Carecalmo to be stopped, the cleansing of the shrine of cultists was inevitable. The Belt of Sanguine Martial Craft, one of the Threads of the Webspinner (artifacts associated with both Sanguine and Mephala), was recovered from Carecalmo's corpse and given to Eno Hlaalu for safe keeping.[6]
