Greymoor Keep, also referred to simply as Greymoor, is an ancient and massive castle that is found in the subterranean cavern of Blackreach and is situated directly under the city of Solitude. The keep is built in the typical vampiric style, and has existed for millennia.

History[edit]

The origins of Greymoor Keep are as mysterious as its inhabitants. It predates the arrival of the Dwarves who built their underground cities in the caverns, and certain legends hold that the very first vampires in existence lay the stones used to build it. The keep and the clan within were ruled by Lady Essenia, also known as the Blood Queen, a vampire alchemist who was known for the vile experiments she conducted, some of which were performed on other vampires. At some point, the keep came under assault from the Falmer in an event the vampires came to call the 'Blind-Blight Siege'.

Between 1E 1029 and 2E 582, the Vampire Lord Rada al-Saran arrived at Greymoor Keep after the Gray Host was defeated by the forces of Empress Hestra at the Bangkorai Garrison, condemning them to Coldharbour as per the agreement struck between King Styriche and Molag Bal. By this time, Essenia had been twisted by 'the simple axioms of ruled and ruler', but acquiesced her rule in favor of alchemical pursuits. Rada al-Saran then set about putting into motion his millennia-long plan to resurrect his fallen kin and return them from Coldharbour.

Rada al-Saran made Greymoor Keep his main staging ground during his assault on Western Skyrim, with the fortress being the main consolidation of his power.
