Mantling vs. Harnessing[edit]
The term 'mantling' here is sorely misused. In the few sources we have which use the term, it roughly means to assume the office of a divine figure. Examples:
"You want to take on the Dark Mane's mantle?" - Dialogue with Shazah
"You now hold the mantle of madness, and Jyggalag is free to roam the voids of Oblivion once more. I will take my leave, and you will remain here, mortal. Mortal...? King? God? It seems uncertain. This Realm is yours. Perhaps you will grow to your station. Fare thee well, Sheogorath, Prince of Madness." - Jyggalag's dialogue
"I am a Vestige, all that remains of a mortal from your world who 'mantled' Sheogorath during an event in a previous time. As a fragment, my memory of the event is … fragmentary. I am hazy on the entire concept of 'mantling,' but it had something to do with Lord Sheogorath, myself, and this Jyggalag of whom you speak." - Chamberlain Haskill Answers Your Questions
It is inappropriate to use the term in the context of what the player does in ESO. Abnur Tharn makes it clear that you are not becoming Akatosh or taking his place as the God of Time, you are merely brandishing a piece of his power through his artifact, the Amulet of Kings. Evidence:
"Only if we use it here on Nirn. But if we were to travel to Coldharbour, we might be able to harness its power. Imbue you with divine agency enough to challenge the Daedric Prince."
"We've already been over this. You need an infusion of divine power to even consider challenging a Daedric Prince."
"The Amulet of Kings is a relic of Akatosh, the Dragon God of Time. His powers embody the qualities of perseverance and invincibility, while promoting the virtues of duty, service, and obedience. Make of that what you will."
"Divines of Tamriel! With this vessel of your power, the Amulet of Kings, I call upon your strength!"
"Let this noble sacrifice be a testament to our desire to set things right and restore balance to the Mundus!"
"Your champion stands ready! Accept this offering and imbue this vestige with your glory! Let the will of Molag Bal be denied!"
You aren't becoming divine, you are being imbued with divine power in a temporary boost. Saying the Vestige "mantled" Akatosh is complete conjecture. Mindtrait0r (talk) 22:30, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
- Go on ahead and change it: I don't think it would be a very controversial edit. It seems like an instance where the term was used without much thought for the definition. --MolagBallet (talk) 01:06, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
