The first time you approach him, you may hear him say: "Lord Hollowjack stalks the land. Are there any brave souls willing to stop him?". Speak with him to find out what is going on: "I need your help! The Daedric Lord Hollowjack seeks new prey to add to his larder!" What's the matter? "Hollowjack, Daedric Lord of Fear, has manifested his power in Nirn this Witches Festival. Lord Hollowjack feeds on the terror he inspires in mortals, crippling them. Lives are at stake, my friend. He's claimed at least three Haunted that I know of." Haunted? "The Haunted are mortals overcome by fear. Hollowjack lured them to Detritus, terrorized them, and released them back into the world. Unless someone does something, they're doomed. As a priest of Stendarr, God of Mercy, I implore you to help!" I'll help. Tell me what to do. "There are three Haunted who need your help. I'll mark where to find them on your map. They're in this world, but their spirits are tormented in Detritus. This amulet will allow you to journey there to help them, and let me communicate with you, too."

After completing the quest for the first time, he will instead greet you with: "My friend! Lord Hollowjack's strength is growing once again!" Talk with him about this newest attack: "I need your help! The Daedric Lord Hollowjack seeks new prey to add to his larder!" What's going on? "It's as I feared. Our defeat of Lord Hollowjack was only temporary. He's gathered his strength once again and will come for us if we don't act quickly!" What needs to be done? "Enter Detritus once more and defeat Lord Hollowjack. Disperse his power for a time, until the Witches Festival ends. Prepare yourself and your allies to confront him again!" I'll face Lord Hollowjack again. "Be careful, Lord Hollowjack is very powerful. I'd join you, but my fears would just strengthen him."

You will be given Maxien's Amulet and mark down the locations of the Haunted that you have to assist. You can take the chance to ask him questions about Lord Hollowjack and himself:

Who are you?

"I'm Maxien Roudille, a priest of Stendarr. I'm aware of the threat Lord Hollowjack presents to the people of Nirn during the Witches Festival. We must protect those targeted by the Daedric Lord of Fear."

How did you learn of this?

"I've been aware of Lord Hollowjack's power for a long time now. I know when he casts his victims back into our world."

Tell me more about Lord Hollowjack. / Tell me about Hollowjack.

"He's the Daedric Lord of Mortal Fears. He rules from the demiplane of Detritus. During the Witches Festival his power reaches into our world, where he works his terrors on the vulnerable. He drives people mad with fear."

Tell me about Detritus.

"Detritus? It's a ghastly place, a half-world filled with horrors. Lord Hollowjack sups on the fears of mortals there. During this time of year, portals open between that demiplane and this, and he works his dark desires on the living."

While helping the Haunted, Priest Maxien will communicate with you via the amulet and assists you by opening portals and giving advice. You can complete them in any order:

While helping Thalien

After speaking with Thalien in Grahtwood about her current situation, there will be a loud noise and portal opens nearby:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "I opened a portal to Detritus. Enter and seek the flamequench bloom!"

Traversing the through the firey Seat of Detritus, Maxien will comment as you reach the Flamequench Bloom:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "You're close to the flamequench bloom. I can feel it. Don't stop now!"

While helping Gatzug

After you talk with Gatzug in Stormhaven, a portal to the Seat of Detritus will open nearby:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "I opened a path. Cleanse the Haunted's axe. But beware. Detritus eventually claims all who enter the realm."

As you move through the nightmarish copy of Wrothgar, Priest Maxien will comment:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "This Haunted needs your help! You must cleanse his weapon!"

While helping Farvyn Rolas

Once you have spoken with Farvyn Rolas in Deshaan:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "Travel to Detritus and face this Haunted's fear!"

As you move through the twisted version of a Dark Elf crypt, Priest Maxien will comment:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "Detritus can be a horrifying place. The very air is filled with fear. Keep going!"

Depending on the order you assist the Haunted, Priest Maxien will comment after you speak a Haunted once you have returned from Detritus:

First Haunted:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "You've saved this Haunted, but there are others who need your help."

Second Haunted:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "You did well, braving the realm of Detritus. One Haunted still needs your help."

Speaking with the Haunted after helping them, you can ask how they first arrived in Detritus. None of them can recall why, but all three vaguely remember being given a task and an item to help them complete it. Once you have helped all three of them, you can return to Priest Maxien in Olyve's Brewery.

He will be shocked at your state when you arrive:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "I can feel the fear on you, but you're alive? How?"

Talking with him, you quickly learn that the priest was not entirely truthful about the situation. He himself is one of Hollowjack's Haunted and had made a deal with the Daedra Lord to free himself from torment. You were to be the latest victim, but your lack of terror makes Priest Maxien urge you to challenge Lord Hollowjack:

"This doesn't make sense. You radiate the primal fear of Detritus, but it hasn't driven you mad?
Wait, what happened with the Haunted?"

I freed the Haunted of their fears, just as you asked.

"Thank you. I wasn't sure it was possible. Clearly you're stronger than I thought. We will need that strength for what comes next. You and I are both in grave danger."

What are you talking about?

"I'm sorry to have done this to you, but I must confess. I'm a priest of Stendarr, but I'm also Lord Hollowjack's first victim—his eldest Haunted.
Lord Hollowjack dined on my terror for ages. Then, one day, he offered me a deal."

What was the deal?

"Release from my torment if I would send bold heroes for him to corrupt. I agreed. I needed to break the cycle. The amulet I gave you marks his prey. I carry one, too. It primes his victims to become one of his Haunted."

And I was to be his latest victim?

"I know I was wrong, but I hoped to find a champion to challenge Lord Hollowjack. You can save all of us. Quickly, now, gather allies and return to Detritus to confront him! I'll stay in contact with you using the amulet.
Wait! Do you feel that?"

Feel what?

The room will begin to shake and a large red portal will appear nearby. You then hear Lord Hollowjack speak to you via the amulet:

Lord Hollowjack: "I'll take great pleasure snuffing out the hope you've rekindled in my Haunted. I'll be there soon to drag every last one of you back to Detritus—for all eternity!"

Priest Maxien Roudille: "He spoke through our amulets! Soon he'll gather enough strength to come for us!"

If you speak with Priest Maxien afterwards, he will say:

"Be careful, Lord Hollowjack is very powerful. I'd join you, but my fears would just strengthen him."

Entering the Seat of Detritus, you will find yourself in a large circular room. At this far end, you will see the three Haunted you helped bound and helpless. They will then be executed by the Pumpkin Spectre servants as you approach and Lord Hollow Jack mocks you.

There will be multiple versions of this:

Lord Hollowjack: "My Haunted can never escape. You have failed them!"

<The three Haunted die and their bodies disolve.>

Priest Maxien Roudille: "They are illusions! Don't be shaken by them!"

Lord Hollowjack: "They all come back to me. You've failed! Give up now!"

Priest Maxien Roudille: "They're not real! Your eyes can't be trusted in his realm!"

After you defeat Lord Hollowjack the first time, Priest Maxien will call you back:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "Well done! Return to me!"

Once you have returned from Detritus, you can talk to Priest Maxien Roudille to complete the quest:

"You did it! Hollowjack's physical form has been dispersed. He can't be killed for good, but if you continue to defeat his corporeal form until the festival ends, the veil will strengthen and confine him to Detritus."

So Lord Hollowjack will return?

"Unfortunately yes. Daedra can't be slain by mortal hands. He will return, but he can't harm us or anyone else until he regains his strength. When he does return, we'll need heroes like you once more."

After the quest, he will apologize for deceiving you by trying to use you as a way to escape from the curse:

"We are safe, my friend. For now."

I think you owe me a better explanation.

"I do. I'm sorry. The shame I feel goes beyond mere words. When you are trapped as long as I was, you will make any excuse, justify any injustice, for a promise of escape."

That isn't good enough.

"I know. No words will ever make this right. I can only hope that my actions to atone for what I did, not just to the Haunted you rescued, but to you, will some day be enough."

I might have done the same in your shoes.

"I pray you never have to find out. I've missed so much in the time I was gone. The Witchmothers have given me shelter for now, to teach me about what I've lost. And perhaps this poor old priest can find forgiveness someday."

Combat Dialogue

When Lord Hollowjack loses certain percentages of his health, he will become invulnerable and will search for his foes. If he hears or sees you, he will rush over and kill you.

Priest Maxien will warn you when this stage is about to start and suggests you crouch to hide from Lord Hollowjack:

Priest Maxien Roudille: "Crouch! You must stay hidden for now!"

Priest Maxien Roudille: "Crouch! He must not hear or see you!"

Priest Maxien Roudille: "Crouch! He's too powerful like this!"
