Tracing Shadows[edit]

After you agree to bring Folsi Othril's letter to her contact in Tel Huulen, you will find Master Foves in heated discussion with Naryu Virian and Master Sulis:

Master Foves: "Any delay is unacceptable! We hired the Morag Tong to deal with this problem."
Naryu Virian: "Bellow all you want. It won't change my process."
Master Foves: "Outrageous! How dare you—"
Master Sulis: "Master Foves. A word, if I may."
<Sulis and Foves will walk away to talk.>

If you talk to him before speaking to your contact:

"I cannot believe the lax state of security around here. Who allowed you to approach me? Are the sentries all asleep again?
Make no mistake, I will speak to someone about reprimanding the lot of them."

Once you have spoken with Naryu and agreed to keep assisting, Master Foves will finish his discussion with Sulis:

Master Foves: "No, Sulis, I'm out of patience. We need this finished. Now."
Master Sulis: "Master Foves, calm yourself. This solves nothing."
Master Foves: "Come Guitot. Leave the hireling to her work."
Alam Guitot: "Yes, Master Foves."
<Master Foves and Alam Guitot walk away from Master Sulis.>
Master Sulis: "Well. Unlike Foves, I am at your service should you need anything."

If you talk with him before leaving, Foves will have overheard your agreement with Naryu:

"Did I hear correctly? Did Naryu hire you to help her complete her writ? Well, just be aware. That's not coming out of the assembly treasury! Any arrangement such as that is between you and the Morag Tong."

Once you have investigated the Servant's Quarters and the Dres Encampment, Naryu will ask you to head back to Tel Huulen and update Master Sulis.

After you have given your report, Master Foves will approach and call you over:

Master Foves: "You, hireling. Follow me."
Master Foves: "Outsider, a word."

He will be interested in what you talked about with Master Sulis and will explain his current caution:

"Hireling, I hope you have a strong sense of discretion. Talking to Master Sulis like that may not be wise. I have concerns about him.
Have you and the assassin made progress?"
We're close to identifying the spy, but other than that I can't say.
"I totally understand. What some call paranoia, I call prudent caution. This spy could cause irreparable damage to the assembly, if not to House Telvanni itself.
Tell me, what did you and Master Sulis talk about just now?"
He explained the workings of the assembly and how the masters engage in special projects.
"Did he, now? How easily he lets slip confidential information to a stranger.
I know others find me grating, but I've spent my life making House Telvanni stronger. This spy threatens our stability. I need you to find them. Eliminate this threat."
Naryu and I are working on that.

After this, you can head out to the Kagouti Nests to meet with Naryu, but before you leave you can ask Master Foves a few more questions:

"I don't like this feeling of the wolves at the door. Your confidence encourages me. Thank you for talking with me.
Now I must go. I swear, my aide, Guitot is avoiding me. Just between us, he's let his grooming lapse. His odor is quite unpleasant."
You seem suspicious of Master Sulis.
"I'm suspicious of everyone. Especially my peers and rivals. You have to be, in my position.
Sulis, though. He's changed. I don't like it."
Changed how?
"He has a new urgency about him. Always wants to talk about some new idea or another. For example, Sulis mentioned our secret project, yes? He insists that we meet in person. And with a spy and possible assassin roaming this tower? Ridiculous!"
Care to tell me anything about this secret project?
"What? No, of course not. What part of the word secret are you unfamiliar with?
No, I cannot discuss our project. Sulis should never have mentioned it to begin with."
You mentioned something about your aide?
"Hmm? Oh, Alam Guitot? Yes, he's been my loyal assistant for a number of years. Maybe I've been working him too hard. Seems like he has no time to keep up his appearance. And the smell! Perhaps I should get him a room outside the servants quarters."

When you search the Kagouti Nests, you find Folsi Othril's body and two documents, the Dres Message and the Mud-Covered Letter. The former provides the true name of the spy, Alam Guitot, while the latter shows that Master Foves was complicit in this and came up with the idea to frame Master Sulis. Showing this to Naryu, she will just say her writ only covers the "Tredecim" and to meet with her at Tel Huulen.

When you arrive, Naryu will be speaking with Master Sulis while Foves, Alam Guitot, Servant Zemzo and Servant Keera-Ra are also attending.

Speaking with Master Foves before Naryu:

"I see that you and the assassin have both returned. I assume that means she'll soon conclude her business and Tel Huulen will be safe again. Well, safer, anyway.
I look forward to hearing her report."

If you choose to tell Master Sullis about Master Foves' involvement but you haven't told Master Sullis, Master Foves will say:

"Away with you! I'm a Telvanni master and I have no time for the likes of you."

When you talk to Naryu, she will give you the option to tell Master Sulis about Foves' involvement or to stick to the Writ of Execution. If you reveal the truth to Master Sulis, Foves will be unruffled by the accusation while Alam is executed:

Master Sulis: "Foves. I understand you have a spy in your employ."
Master Foves: "So now you know, Sulis. Well, good for you. That and a few coins will get you a ride on a silt strider."
Naryu Virian: "Then, this is over, Tredecim."
Master Sulis: "No use denying it. Assassin, complete your writ."
Alam Guitot: "No! Master Foves made me! I didn't have a choice! Please! I'm just a hireling! I did what I was told!"
Naryu Virian: "Time to end this, Tredecim."
<Alam tries to flee and Naryu kills him.>

If you decided to not reveal the truth, Master Foves will be unconcerned while Alam is executed:

Naryu Virian: "Master Foves, it seems your aide has been speaking out of turn."
Alam Guitot: "No! Mercy, please!"
Master Foves: "If you're certain, assassin, then do as you will."
Alam Guitot: "Please! I'm just a hireling! I did what I was told"!
<Alam turns and flees, Naryu throws a dagger and kills him at the door.>
Master Foves: "Help is so difficult to come by. Pity you had to kill one of the good ones."

After this you can speak with Master Foves once more, his dialogue will depend on your choice:

Told Sulis about Foves:
Stuck to the Writ:
"Well, looks like you certainly dug deeper than I expected. If you think this changes anything, you're sadly mistaken. I'm still a Telvanni master. This is a bump in the road, nothing more.
I do suggest you watch behind you. I have a long memory."
"Well, I guess that ties up your part in all this. You better hope you chose correctly. I would hate to have lost a fine servant for nothing."

Conclave of Fate[edit]

Master Foves can be encountered when you enter the Assembly Hall while trying to warn them about Master Shelreni Baro and her allies. If you speak with him before Magister Gothren, his greeting will depend on if you met Foves previously:

Completed Tracing Shadows and revealing his involvement:
Unknown Trigger:
Otherwise:
"I have nothing to say to you, outsider. Not only did you cost me the life of a valued servant, you set back my plans in the assembly. I will not soon forget such insults." [verification needed — dialogue might not match up with choice during quest. Lang file shows line that makes more sense if his involvement was not revealed]
"While I mourn the loss of a valued servant, I am glad that you eliminated the spy that was stalking these halls. I was hoping to finally get on with this conclave when you and Meln showed up, though.
Why is it that magisters complicate everything?"
"We were just about to finally get on with the conclave when you and Meln appeared. Why do magisters complicate even the simplest of proceedings?"

After you speak with Magister Gothren, you will need to find where Master Shelreni Baro is being held. You have the option of speaking with Master Foves for clues:

"I don't understand this necessity for debate. If it were up to me, we'd get right to the vote. Nothing anyone has to say will change my mind about Shelreni.
Now then, is Magister Meln really dead?"
Magister Meln was murdered by Master Shelreni. He needs to see her right away.
"Meln may have confused Magister Gothren, but there's no provision for a dead Telvanni participating in a conclave. It's just not done!"
Look, if we don't find Shelreni, there's no telling what may happen to you and the other masters.
"Is that a threat? Master Marena led Shelreni through the east door for making similar pronouncements only a few moments ago. If that can happen to a master, imagine what's in store for a lowly mouth like you."

He will be at the hearing of Master Shelreni but will have to flee after she caused chaos to escape.
