Of Knights and Knaves[edit]

As you approach him in Gonfalon Bay you will overhear a conversation taking place between the Dockmaster and some nobles:

Dockmaster Arnauld: "My dockhands are watching for your cargo, Lady Arabelle. They know it's precious."
Lord Bacaro Volorus: "There was a storm off the coast. Perhaps it delayed the ships."
Lady Arabelle Davaux: "Forgive me if I do the job you hired me for, Lord Bacaro. You there, might we speak?"

Before you speak to Lady Arabelle:

"Can't say that I see much point in asking around High Isle. I'm no investigator, but isn't this the one place that we know Lady Arabelle's ships aren't?"

After you speak with Lady Arabelle and start the quest, you can opt to speak with Dockmaster Arnauld before you leave:

"I'm a dockmaster, not a bloody mage. What does the lady expect me to do if her ships never made it to the docks in the first place?"
You don't seem very concerned about these missing ships.
"Should I be? Lady Arabelle suspects some sort of foul play, but not on my docks! Not a chance. Gonfalon Bay is safe—everyone knows that. Trouble comes from the mainland, not from here.
Of course, the waters to the northeast can be treacherous."
Treacherous? How so?
"The closer you get to Amenos, the more unpredictable the currents become. And storms constantly barrage the coast. Not to mention Sea Elf pirates.
A good captain knows these things. None of that would keep Lady Arabelle's ships from reaching port."
Lord Bacaro mentioned a powerful storm.
"Like I said, storms close to Amenos aren't that unusual. I doubt the ships we're waiting for would have sailed that far north.
Just in case, I sent people to look for signs of wreckage in the Shallows. I really don't expect them to find any, though."

At the end of the quest, you find out that he sold out the captains of the three alliance ships to the Ascendant Order.

Deadly Investigations[edit]

When you go to his home near the docks, you will find Ascendant Order thugs hanging around and his home ransack. From the clues you find, you learn that although he was compensated by the Ascendant Order, he was able to get on their bad side after demanding more gold for his betrayal.

Jakarn later informs you that the Ascendant Order has captured Arnauld for becoming a liability to their cause. You will make your way through the Dufort Shipyards and you'll find the treacherous shipmaster all tied up inside a ship's hold:

Dockmaster Arnauld: "No more. Please!"
Jakarn: "I'll watch the door."

Hearing him out:

"You. You were at the docks with Lady Arabelle. I thought the Ascendant Magus has returned. He didn't need tools to torture me. Not with his magic.
The pain, the fire. It was inside my skin! Get me out of here, please!"
You accepted bribes from the Ascendant Order. You got yourself into this.
"You're right. I let the gold blind me! But look, I knew nothing about special cargo, or important passengers, or Amenos, or any of it.
Even Lady Arabelle said the ships were just carrying supplies vital to Lord Bacaro's conference."
Tell me everything you know.
"I gave the Ascendant Magus a list of names. Folks he could trust to keep quiet. Muscle to collect the goods when the ships ran aground.
But it was all a sham. They captured the captains, then gave orders to kill anyone else who washed ashore!"
Do you know who the Ascendant Magus really is?
"Are you serious? He didn't trust me. I never got a real name or saw his face. But he's rich, I can tell you that much.
Like, nobility rich. Royal rich. You can smell it on them, you know? All the perfumes and soaps and fancy clothes."
You mentioned Amenos. What about it?
"It's an island to the north. A jungle rock where they send prisoners to disappear. The Magus gave orders to look for someone on Amenos. Whoever he's searching for, he moved his knights from the Shallows to there.
That's all I know! Cut me free!"
I'll cut you free. Get out of here. Now. (Frees Arnauld)
Dockmaster Arnauld: "Thank you. I'll find a way to make up for this. I swear it!"
Jakarn: "Nice work! I wouldn't have been so merciful, but at least we know more than we did. I'll see you back at the manor."
You deserve whatever they have planned for you. (Leaves Arnauld to his fate)
Dockmaster Arnauld: "No. I don't deserve this. Jakarn, please! Turn me in if you must, but don't leave me here!"
Jakarn: "Well done. We got what we need and you're leaving the dockmaster to his fate he deserves. I'll see you back at the manor."

Speaking to him if you choose not to release him, he will beg:

"You won't really leave me here, will you?
Tell Jakarn I can work to make this right with Lady Arabelle! I'll serve her for life if I have to!"

If Jakarn was the last contact to meet, and if you choose to not free him:

"I'm a dockmaster, not a bloody mage. What does the lady expect me to do if her ships never made it to the docks in the first place?"
