Anconath

Anconath is a High Elf spirit found in the Crypt of Hearts, in life he was a former Battlemage and an instructor at the Agea Relle. Nerien'eth came to the erroneous conclusion that Anconath was having an affair with his wife, Alanwe. When Nerien'eth snapped and destroyed the school, he trapped Anconath's soul to have it tortured for many years.

His soul is first seen in Crypt of Hearts I in Archmaster Siniel's chamber. Anconath is being burned alive as part of his eternal torment. A vision of him speaking to Alanwe is seen in the hallway beyond the Archmaster's room, and his soul appears alongside Rulanir and Faindor after the Ilambris Twins are defeated. His soul is once again briefly captured during Nerien'eth's return in Crypt of Hearts II. He is freed after Nerien'eth is defeated, and he can be spoken to inside the room with the portal.

Crypt of Hearts I[edit]

Anconath's torment

As you approach the location Aconath's spirit is being held, you can hear him shout:

Anconath: "Make this stop, Nerieneth. I've done nothing!"

When you progress through the Crypt of Hearts, you will see a memory of an old conversation between Alanwe and Anconath:

Anconath: "Alanwe. Do you have a moment? I was hoping to speak to you about a new lesson plan. But I think I may have a more pressing issue."
Alanwe: "I wanted to speak to you, as well—what's this I hear about you teaching advanced destruction? I want the students able to defend themselves in the backwoods of Tamriel, but I don't want them learning how to fight a war—or burning the school down."
Anconath: "And yet you hired a war wizard—can this conversation wait? Your husband—"
Alanwe: "Nerien'eth? What is it?"
Anconath: "He thinks you and I are having an affair."
Alanwe: "An affair? With you?"
<Alanwe laughs.>
Anconath: "Why is that humorous?"
Alanwe: "No reason in particular."
Alanwe and Anconath

Once Ilambris-Athor and Illambris-Zaven are defeated, the freed spirits will appear and the following conversation will be heard:

Anconath: "I don't know where you found your new friends, Alanwe, but they don't seem to fear death. It's admirable."
Alanwe's Soul: "They can speak better of that than I, but they're bested my husband's minions. We owe them everything."
Faindor: "Indeed"
<He looks around to see just how many spirits are in the room.>
Faindor: "By the Empyrean Light—I didn't know Nerien'eth had tortured so many of us. That whoreson dog!"
Rulanir: "Easy, Faindor. He'll pay when the time comes, but we don't want you rushing off to die. Again."
Anconath: "Our friends killed his Daedric pets. He may come looking for us, and we need to be ready."

Speak to him before speaking to Alanwe, and he will say:

"Nerien'eth will hear from me before I leave this plane, and he won't like what I have to say.
I have an incendiary vernacular."

Speak to him after completing the quest, and he will say:

"Nerien'eth took everything from me.
And I won't rest until I take something back."

Crypt of Hearts II[edit]

If you reenter the portal in the final chamber after Alanwe has sacrificed herself, you will find all of the remaining spirits, including Anconath.

"And so the hero returns. I should have known you were the one to free us. Nerien'eth single-handedly trounced us—even as the entire school stood ready to face him.
But if someone could defeat him it would be you."
Who are you, again?
"I taught the art of magical self-defense here at the school. It should have been my place to protect the students.
I hope Nerien'eth burns in whatever afterlife he arrives at."
What happened to Alanwe?
"When Nerien'eth slayed us, he ensured our souls could not pass on, but with his defeat, our spectral lives are our own, again.
Alanwe gave hers to send that Daedric blade away."
What will you do now?
"Nerien'eth anchored our souls to this plane when he slayed us, but I am fairly certain we can find a way to pass on.
For the moment, the students are just happy to be free from torment and battle with Daedra."
