Game freeze[edit]
When I use the Saarthal amulet and cast a spell at the door, the game freezes when the door shatters. Is there a fix to this? Toadofsteel 02:53, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
- I was able to get past it by not looking at the door as my spell it it - try using a fireball or similar then looking at the floor very quickly. — Unsigned comment by 129.174.190.37 (talk) at 05:53 on 15 November 2011
- I fixed this by adjusting the graphics quality. I was playing on Medium but when I switched to high or low, I was able to cast the spell without the game crashing. --Pin-Pin-Ire 13:09, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- I had the same problem, but only the second and third time. The first time, I used lightning bolt, but only from one hand, and that went just fine, but the second and third time, I dual-charged the spell, an the game froze just as the lightning hit the wall. I have graphics set to ultra. Jyggorath 21:20, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Bug?[edit]
When I enter the room behind the wall you break, everything turns white and this wierd person appears, and no one does anything. It's just the three of us in that room and no one is moving, I can't leave the room, and if I try to talk to anyone it says they're busy. I've stood here for a half an hour(hoping the game will just jump to it) and reloaded several times (tried entering the chamber different ways, not entering at all, exiting to Skyrim, etc.) and nothing is working. Help?[edit]
I moved the help petition from the table in the page itself to here. Someone wrote there: "Anyone know how to find the Arch Mage? have completed everything I can think of with Tolfdir but unable to find Arch Mage back at the college. please help" — Unsigned comment by Moinante (talk • contribs) at 19:49 on 24 November 2011 (UTC)
- Try looking in his quarters, or in the Hall of Elements. I'm pretty sure the quest pointer points to him, so if it does, follow that. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 19:49, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Value of returning rings?[edit]
After clearing the dungeon, before leaving I returned to Arneil and said this is all I could find. The 3 rings of health were removed, he made a snide comment... That was that. Is there any reward or benifit to actualy retunring the rings to him? Or disadvantage to keeping them? — Unsigned comment by 124.149.57.134 (talk) at 08:34 on 26 November 2011
- I have returned those rings to Arniel Gane. And before that, I noticed that these rings were not quest items. I could trade them with my follower. So I guess there may be some side effects later on. Just like those akaviri swords you returned to Baurus in Oblivion. 223.18.171.39 17:43, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
- I cannot find him either....the quest pointer does point.. but after following it countless times with no results, it appears to me as if he is on the roof or something. Cannot proceed. (ustfdes-1/19/12) — Unsigned comment by 68.228.47.241 (talk) at 03:08 on 20 January 2012
- I was actually wondering this myself, perhaps Gane doesn't return to the college until you return the rings? There doesn't seem to be much benefit to giving him the rings from what I can see presently, since he gives you nothing, no quest prompts you to return them and everyone is more focused on other things anyway. Bushwhacker 03:17, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
- I looked it up in the CK, it seems to look if you have at least one of the rings in your inventory, and then removes three of these rings. I couldn't see anything else attached to this. (So it would be best to drop two rings, turn the last one to Arniel, and then pick them up again.) SarthesArai (talk) 22:56, 4 January 2013 (GMT)

I guess the rings are randomly placed? Because I can't seem to get to the 3rd ring. I've used tcl and am literally on the marker but there's no pick up icon. 50.0.25.231 07:50, 19 December 2012 (GMT)
- There is no real benefit to giving Gane the rings. They have a fortify health effect; if you keep them, you can disenchant, use or sell them. The rings are not randomly placed, they are in the same spot every time, but you can bump into them and knock them around on the floor. --Morrolan (talk) 02:49, 3 August 2013 (GMT)
Frozen Pillars[edit]
Help! - I'm having the same problem. Looks like it's a bug. Edit: found a solution. try leaving the area through the door that you came from, them come back to the pillars.Ashadycharacter 06:06, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
- This can also occur on the second puzzle, as I found last night (PS3). There is NO workaround possible as you can't leave the area; you can go back to excavation which does nothing but not leave the dungeon as a gate (also unopenable) prevents this. Tried deleting game data and reinstalling, but it's a bug saved within the save game file. You have to restore to a save outside the dungeon and cross your fingers (untested as of yet as my last save was 6 hours prior to entering) --Hunneis 17:01, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- I solved this issue, playing the 360 version, by leaving the room to the excavation sight and then reequipping the saarthal amulet saving the game and re entering. Not sure if this will have the same effect on the PC or PS3 versions but once you clear that point just be sure to keep the amulet equipped and you shouldn't have this problem again in this dungeon — Unsigned comment by 71.38.110.23 (talk) at 00:01 on 20 August 2013

First Puzzle does not solve[edit]
Having a tad of a problem with the first puzzle. Following the instructions did not help (would've figured that out myself), trying "opposites" did not work, after that I left and reentered, wouldn't open, then I tried all possible 81 combinations (wearing the Saarthal amulet which I previously unequipped just in case), to no avail - it's just darts. The way back of course is locked, too. And that after I literally spent hours of fighting the high level Draugr in this dungeon. Anyone else encountered this? --Ulkomaalainen 01:19, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
- As an addendum: After continuing (via tcl and moveto player for my companion Mjoll), the second one worked just fine. --Ulkomaalainen 01:41, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

- I got the same thing, it won't work. What's the combination of pillars you need to solve it? I'm getting a bit tired of these darts, would appreciate some help/clarification. Thanks — Unsigned comment by 97.83.6.47 (talk) at 02:08 on 16 December 2011

- At least you can train your restauration skin. As I said, for me there was no combination that could solve it. The "normal" solution (from the article) would have been setting them to the symbols behind the pillars. I wasn't able to continue without the console though - if I would've been on a console, I would have needed an old save. --Ulkomaalainen 03:58, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- A possible follow-up bug: Tolfdir never returns to the College in my game but stays in Saarthal's final chamber. Getting him to go to Winterhold via console just lets him start his journey off to Saarthal again. --Ulkomaalainen 11:06, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- I retract that follow-up bug, after reading the history of Tolfdir's page, I am sure that wrong information has been entered there, thus irritating me. --Ulkomaalainen 11:34, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Bug: Raising Jyrik[edit]
In order for the quest to continue on after you've killed Jyrik, he must be dead, obviously. If you raise him, Tolfdir will not give the speech option that allows the quest to progress (Sending you back to the Archmage) until Jyrik is dead again. Make sure you do anything with that Draugr's body afterward. Also, if you do raise him again, be warned that when he dies, he explodes in flame all over again. I just wanted to see if you guys had a similar issue so we can place this on the list of bugs for the quest as well as Jyrik's page. --Sprocketz 11:34, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- Had simmilar experience: I raised Jyrik as an undead and then talked to Tolfdir, the quest topic wasn't available. After killing my raised Jyrik, it appeared (the death of Jyrik is a contidion for this line to appear, checked in the CK). But unlike Sprocketz's version, my Jyrik simply disintegrated as he should after reanimation. SarthesArai (talk) 22:56, 4 January 2013 (GMT)
How to initiate a quest[edit]
I don't know about editorial policy at UESP Wiki, but shouldn't a quest walkthrough include how to initiate the quest? I came here because I'm already on the Forbidden Legend quest, and can't get into Saarthal to complete it. After reading this page I understand I need to do the Under Saarthal quest to get in, but I don't know how to start the quest.--MS — Unsigned comment by 88.246.218.187 (talk) at 09:04 on 24 February 2012 (UTC)
- If you take a look at the top of this quest page you'll notice a prerequisite quest listed that links you to that quest page. One of the reasons that this quest appears not to include how to initiate it is because it is not a random quest. Under saarthal is part of the mages guild quest line. To jump on top of the next question; yes you must join the mages guild if you want to complete forbidden legend as it is the only way to gain access to saarthal. You will encounter a level dependent Draugr[edit]
Having recently bought the game on sale, I joined this site after I was having problems figuring out the Alchemy game mechanics.
Well, now I'm completely stuck Under Saarthal! I've only been to Riverwood and Whiterun, then everybody was telling me to go to the College. I've become mere level 10 inside this dungeon (2 of those levels were in alchemy). Yet this first puzzle (easily solved) led to a shout-ing Draugr Scourge. That page says those are for player level 21....
Good old Faendal I met at level 1 is completely helpless.
Another description of this part of the quest says "aggressive draugr deathlord who can easily disarm you with his shout." For me, it's even worse!
(There's a duplicate description on the Skyrim:Saarthal page. Perhaps these duplicates could be merged?)
I tried not to read these pages until I'd done them, but this seems insolvable. The game just loops back to the same save as I die repeatedly. I'm going back to my save in the circular room and leaving without entering Saarthal. But that means I cannot complete either quest, or advance at the College.
Would it be OK to mention the closing grate and extremely high level second half of this quest? Does this qualify as a bug?
--DayDreamer 02:13, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- After extensive discussion elsewhere (Skyrim Quest/Place Organization), all nicely re-written by Nephele (talk · contribs · email).
--DayDreamer 00:49, 24 March 2012 (UTC)- I met the Draugr Scourge as well as a lv. 11, and it seems like the only workaround is to equip fire (sparks suck), and run in circles: up the stairs, down the other, up the stairs, and down again. Since the Scourge is slower than you are, just wait at one end of a staircase. When he shows up, throw fire at him until he gets close, then go up/down the other staircase and repeat. As an added bonus, the Unrelenting Force shout it uses can't turn corners and therefore cannot hit you. This strategy worked for me. — Unsigned comment by 180.156.103.113 (talk) on 5 May 2012
- If you run into a high level draugr at the split level room after the first puzzle you can get behind the coffin on the upper level and the Draugr will not beable to get to you. This allows you to fire on it without risking death. However after a couple hits they may flee through the doors and you'll need to move forward a bit to draw them back out. Repeat these steps to kill them with relative ease. Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 04:40, 15 November 2012 (GMT)
Unable to leave Saarthal Excavation[edit]
When Tolfdir tells me to return to College Winterhold, I go all the way back to the saarthal excavation place, and find myself in the coffin room, trapped. The gate seems to have no switch to open it again...help? — Unsigned comment by 180.156.103.113 (talk) at 04:11 on 6 May 2012
- If you are on the PC you could use the console command tcl(toggle collision) to pass through the wall.If you are on the PS3 or Xbox than I don't know what you can do.--Skyrimplayer 16:23, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

- I'm a bit late on this one, but for anyone who has this problem in the future: On Xbox and PS3 you can phase through walls and gates using a wooden bowl/plate/platter and Whirlwind Sprint. Just drop the plate, grab it, and push it against the wall. Walk forward until you begin to clip into the plate. Then use Whirlwind Sprint. This can take a few tries but it's better than having to reload a previous save. video demonstration [1] 173.73.23.140 03:33, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

- You have to go back to the room where the huge sphere is, and then there's a door behind it. Follow the corridor for a few metres, and you'll get to a word wall teaching you the shout "Ice Form", and a chest. There's also another door a bit to the left, and that will let you get into the Saarthal Excavation203.218.26.112 01:24, 17 May 2013 (GMT)

Dremora Lord picking up the Staff of Jyric Gaulderson[edit]
I've had this happen to me today. I've never seen the summoned Dremora Lords picking up weapons from the environment before, but during this battle in particular it seems that since Jyric is invulnerable during the first part of the battle, it causes the Dremora to seek out other weapons nearby, and whatever they happen to pick up dissapears right along with them when they're killed/banished. Should this be noted under the bugs section? Rhonijin 17:21, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Tolfdir bug[edit]
I, Tolfdir, and the other student arrive at saarthal. I try to talk to Tolfdir to unlock the door and it just says he is busy. - You could try that, but I believe all the students should be there. Return to the college and see if all students have moved from the practice session. The Silencer speaksTalk 22:09, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Tolfdir Saarthal Bug/Annoyance.[edit]
Tolfdir never arrived at Saarthal when I began this quest to gain access. Only the female trainee showed up, while the other two male trainees remain back in the Hall. (This says the female can take care of herself, while the men were scared.)
What I discovered is this is NOT a bug as much as NPC action/reaction in the game.
Tolfdir has a chance to get "lost" due to conflict with other creatures in the game and even stuck "off the path," unable to return for days on his own. If you allow him to walk alone, he will run around and defend himself from the creatures of the game world. So if you choose to fast travel, you run the chance of losing him like this. Walk with him if it's not too late.
The quickest solution to this is to kill the female NPC that did make it to Saarthal, which automatically starts you on a quest to "Rejoin" the College and immediately places an indicator as to where Tolfdir is at. When you find him, you will have to talk to him and pay a fine in order for the College to forgive you, but you are only half done.
For my game, I found him on a high directly unreachable ledge, so I had to elevate behind him and jump off some cliffs to reach him. I then had to Shout (Force) him slowly off the ledges and slide him back down to a walkable path, and then he continued his walk to Saarthal.
NOTE: FORCE him off the cliff/ledge. Don't bother damage attacking him, he will just remain on the ledge and cast.
If anyone else knows how/where to post this, feel free.
Hope this helps.

- Repeatedly fast-traveling back to Saarthal or waiting by the door there is something I've used in the past in this particular situation. Just keep on doing it, eventually his position gets reset and he goes to where he's supposed to be. --Morrolan (talk) 12:45, 10 April 2013 (GMT)

Toldfir's dialogue during the fight[edit]
It's kind to hard to hear / read his lines because Jyrik is near the player and he keeps shouting. I could only understand "Keep him occupied!", even though I redid the fight a few times.--201.15.138.79 23:51, 17 October 2012 (GMT)
- I think it's "Keep it busy. I'll try to drain some of its power!" (000ea5e6) and then "There! Now attack it!" (000ea5e5). All of the quest dialogue can be found here if someone wants to actually go through it all to find what else is said by Tolfdir at that particular time. — ABCface◥ 00:37, 18 October 2012 (GMT)
Arch Mage doesn't give next quest[edit]

Show patience[edit]
It is best to walk with him to saarthal as he may otherwise get lost but you should also let him enter first because he will take off again. You can atleast see his marker. Verified three times and each time went to Whiterun and back. The third time I tried to catch upto him but was unsuccessful evenwith fast traveling. I assume he was running full speed. — Unsigned comment by 24.57.73.23 (talk) at 22:56 on 26 January 2013
Multiple Amulets[edit]
This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered. |
At the start of this quest I had some average generic amulet on, and I equipped Saarthal Amulet to break through the wall, and later equipped Gauldur Amulet Fragment when I found it. And awhile after completion I noticed I had all 3 amulets on. I can equip a new amulet, but I have no idea how it is determined which of the currently equipped amulets gets removed. I cant equip more than 3, and removing an amulet lowers that to 2, or both for the standard 1. I play on PS3 with all DLC and 1.9 update. I want to know if this is one of those "rare issues" talked about in the patch notes, or if it is repeatable. And if so maybe it should be added to the bugs section. 68.117.132.68 09:38, 16 April 2013 (GMT)
- My suggestion at this time would simply be to try and repeat the glitch. To determine whether or not it was a unique situation or whether it is repeatable. If you do, try and see if multiple combinations are possible and if so, which combinations end up triggering the glitch. If it indeed deserves a mention on a bug list somewhere it is relevant to have as much information on it as possible. -Kharay (talk) 11:51, 16 April 2013 (GMT)
placeatme vs. moveto[edit]
One of the console workarounds listed mentions using "placeatme" to bring Tolfdir to the player's location. However, doesn't placeatme make a "duplicate" of Tolfdir and moveto would be a better choice of command to avoid possible issues? (I had the issue and used moveto.) --Freso (talk) 08:13, 1 July 2013 (GMT)
- You are correct in that using "placeatme" spawns a copy of Tolfdir. In fact, "placeatme" is NOT recommended for named NPCs, and "moveto" is a more viable alternative. I will update the work around accordingly. --Nocte|Chat|Look 03:29, 3 August 2013 (GMT)
Wrath of Tolfdir[edit]
I was happily cruising through Sarthal, made my way to Jyric, and slapped him down as soon as Tolfdir did his thing with the orb. Things got interesting after that, as Tolfdir, by reasons unknown, decided that my follower (Serana, non-vampire) deserved to die, and started to rain balls of fire upon her. Since both of them are essential, and none of them were hostile towards me, I just tried to calm them down, but both insisted that they were "busy". Reloaded the game to the spot right before Jyric awakens, and then suddenly everyone got along just fine. Well, except Jyric, obviously. First time that I've ever seen two followers have a private showdown, and I have no clue why it happened. Just remember particularly well to save before entering the final chamber. — Unsigned comment by 2013 213.113.181.233 (talk) at 09:01 on 28 November
- This has nothing at all to do with Jyric or with Saarthal. It is a known issue with Serana. See here for more details. — Daric✐ 11:11, 6 June 2014 (GMT)
New Bug?[edit]
I was playing a fresh game on an xbox 360. I started the quest with Tolfdir outside of Saarthal, but before he went inside I also bought a spell from him and then sold a book to him. I was able to enter the ruins, but I noticed that he didn't enter with me after a minute or so of looking around. I ran back outside, didn't see, him, went back in, didn't see him. My active quest was still on Bleak Falls Barrow, so I switched it to Under Saarthal. I had to run outside and chase Tolfdir down- he was all the way by where Cicero was with the broken down wagon by the time I caught up with him. [That's near Loreius Farm -Amsuko] And he just kept walking! Attempts to talk to him were moot: he was "busy". The dark elf classmate was with him. Really weird! I'm going back to Saarthal, maybe he will magically reappear if I try looking for the amulet etc. EDIT: didn't go back to Saarthal, chased down Tolfdir to try one last time to talk with him. He was fighting a wolf, and after the wolf was killed I could trigger his dialogue to let me help whats his face look for items. Still, really weird, right? — Unsigned comment by 68.49.10.20 (talk) at 23:33 on 6 September 2014
- I had a similar problem. I met Tolfdir at the ruin (fast traveled). Talked to him and said "I'm ready". He walked inside and I followed. Once inside, I didn't see him in front of me, although I had clicked on the doors soon after him. I explored around, couldn't find him. Used quest marker "Follow Tolfdir" to find out he is outside of Saarthal. He is outside, halfway to Whiterun! Like the person above, he's near Loreius Farm Map Location
Is this is related to the fact that he runs off fighting enemies - then finds new enemies to run after?Note that in my instance: He WAS waiting at Saarthal like he's supposed to be. There were no enemies around at the time and everyone acted normal. I DID talk to him (this progresses the quest to a new stage) and he DID unlock and at least disappear before my eyes at the door to Saarthal. I assume this means he must have gone inside and then turned around and left just as I went inside? I didn't have the correct quest marker on at the time and it was very dark, so I can't be sure if he was inside for awhile or not. (Xbox 360, 1.9.31.0.8 patch? It's hard to read on Xbox/TV) Amsuko (talk) 21:56, 21 May 2015 (GMT)- UPDATE: He is somehow SPAWNING near WHITERUN instead of appearing inside Saarthal (in my case). Then he proceeds to walk all the way to Saarthal. If I...(1) Reload the autosave that occurs right after entering Saarthal (remember that he had entered before me) (2) Quickly turn on the correct quest marker. (3) Immediately go back outside (4) Tolfdir will be somewhere near Whiterun (too far to have "manually" traveled there since I last saw him seconds ago). I never tried traveling to him. I just watched his quest marker. (5) He then travels "manually" back to Saarthal. I did this a couple of times, each time he was near Whitehall. The longer I stood around the closer he got to Saarthal. (6) Eventually I waited 24 hrs. When the wait ended, I immediately heard Saarthal's door make the open/closing sound behind me. I quickly entered Saarthal, and he was walking down the hall as if he had just entered. At this point I didn't bother re-testing anymore. This is about where he spawns: Map. Saarthal Xbox 360[edit]
Games freezes as I enter room with jyrik tried reloading several times even started new game same problem. Any advice?
Ruins of Saarthal[edit]
I was following the first questline for the Mages College. I had just picked up the amulet of Saarthal and destroyed the wall. Upon entering the next room when the Psijic monk should have appeared my game hard crashed without warning. It immediately closed. Anyone know a fix? Even a fix that allows me to progress the quest through the command prompt would be great.
Tolfdit/Jyrik glitch[edit]
When I go through Saarthal and get to Jyrik, he remains invincible. Tolfdir runs and gets the staff, but doesn't talk. He just goes to his regular walking, non-aggressive animation, and follows me around, instead of closing the Eye. Resetting, waiting, or shouting at Tolfdir do nothing, and attacking adds a bounty, and talking just says he's busy.
Fast traveling fixed "no one showed" problem[edit]
After receiving the quest, I went ahead of Tolfdir and took a roundabout way to Saarthal. My goal was to hit some ore veins along the way, so I took my time getting there. When I arrived, no one was there. I stood near the marker and used Wait several times for an hour each. On one of those wait periods, a dragon flew overhead, but he never got close enough for me to engage. Given the notes on this quest, it's possible the dragon was distracted by Tolfdir's company and went to harass them instead.
I waited another 12 hours or so, but no one ever showed. I walked back to Winterhold using the path that runs behind Jarl's Longhouse and checked in at the college. A few of the students were there, but no Tolfdir. After reading about the solutions here, I figured I'd go back to Saarthal and use the console commands to summon Tolfdir. I fast traveled back to Saarthal, and lo and behold, there he was, waiting for me.
I'm not sure if this information needs to be integrated into the page in any way, but I thought I'd report my experience in case someone else has the same problem. — Unsigned comment by JaylanSpellsword (talk • contribs) at 00:35 on 13 November 2016 (UTC)
- This might just be a coincidence (for example, perhaps you had not waited long enough and fast traveling made them appear). I may test this at some point if I get the bug; and if anyone else gets the bug and this fixes it, it can probably be added to the page. AlphaAbsol (talk) 04:21, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

- You could be right. I suspect the dragon I attracted by Waiting might have spotted Tolfdir's party and attacked. That might have caused them to get stuck somewhere along the way. In total, I waited about 24 hours, so I'd be surprised if I didn't wait long enough. Also, I followed the marked path back to Winterhold and didn't see anyone along the way. It's anyone's guess as to what really happened, but since fast travel fixed the bug for me, I thought I'd share the experience. JaylanSpellsword (talk) 13:15, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
Making Jyrik vulnerable if Orb deactivation doesn't trigger[edit]
I've been having a heck of a time with this quest - a bunch of things just never activate, probably due to mod issues I haven't successfully debugged yet. I was able to work through nearly all of them right up to the fight with Jyrik, but even when I got Tolfdir to start attacking the orb and telling me to attack Jyrik, Jyrik remained invulnerable.
To remove Jyrik's invulnerability on PC, open the console, click on Jyrik, and type setghost 0. This will enable you to attack and damage him.
