Ship[edit]

does the ship go away after the quest is done, or can one return to it later

it makes a tempting house, if it stays there and the containers are safe — Unsigned comment by 108.203.0.208 (talk) at 10:22 on 27 November 2011

Yes, the ship will always be there and the enemies don't respond but i wouldn't leave my things there. — Unsigned comment by Templar s0ldier (talkcontribs) at 03:14 on 28 November 2011
I'll test some of the containers if it hasn't been done yet. -Melleh17 00:37, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
The discussion you're responding to is five months old, but to save you the trouble of unnecessary testing, Katariah is listed in the category for safe locations, which means it does not respawn. ABCface 03:40, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Stormcloak courier bug[edit]

Ok, this isn't serious, but has this happened to anyone else? I'm pretty sure everyone has at some point has seen couriers fighting random creatures. When I breached the ship, all of the sudden, a stormcloak courier just entered the top part of the ship and suddenly attacked the imperial staff, that is until she died while severely damaging some sailors. Anyone seen this happening as well? — Unsigned comment by 69.111.12.142 (talk) at 07:14 on 26 December 2011

I had a guard follow me in. He was trying to arrest me however when the imperials attacked me the guard defended me ... well until they killed him! Kimi the Elf 07:02, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
Yes, a stormcloak courier had followed me in who I met near the cell rooms, though before I could talk to him a Penitus Oculatus agent killed him, and the courier didn't respond to the outbreak of violence.--HardAdriano1 14:07, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Loot isn't constant[edit]

I was on the ship looking for the ebony weapon and the glass battleaxe, only in my game the weapons were both iron. This was during the quest on the first runthrough, therefore should the items be removed from the extras bit? I feel it can be misleading people into looking for said items. — Unsigned comment by 86.180.46.34 (talk) at 16:40 on 29 November 2011

I had a glass weapon (mace?) in a locked weapon case in the Emperor's quarters. Bootstomp 07:32, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
The chests in the area would be level-dependant, I have edited the article to reflect this. Rhoan 21:20, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
I only found imperial and iron weapons on board, and I'm level 58. Even the above mentioned display case contained an iron mace...— Unsigned comment by 91.137.244.132 (talk) at 09:18 on 1 March 2012

Skyrim politics[edit]

Amaund Motierre said "you have served the empire and indeed Tamriel in ways you couldn't imagine", so what's his purpose, benevolent or malignant? — Unsigned comment by 220.255.1.41 (talk) at 10:21 on 1 December 2011

Well, I guess that's kind of something you have to figure out on your own. Motierre can mean that killing a weakened emperor can give way to a hopefully new and powerful one, which means he was sort of leading a "coup". Probably his intentions were to successfully replace Mede, one who would avoid conflict with the Thalmor, with a more powerful one that can overcome the dominion. I'd say neither good or evil, but he's probably the kind of guy (as well as other people) who's fed up with how Mede is unwilling to fight the Thalmor and their laws and how he is unable to control his empire. — Unsigned comment by 69.111.12.142 (talk) at 07:24 on 26 December 2011

Consequences[edit]

Are there are any long term repercussions/differences in the outcome based on whether you complete or ignore the two optional objectives:
a) Leaving Maro alive
b) Killing Mottieri

I would've thought killing you employer would be bad for the brotherhood's reputation. --94.76.168.253 22:22, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't believe there are any repercussions either way. --Gage (talkcontribs) 06:10, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
If you're worried about reputation, just kill Rexus too. Dead men tell no tales! Unless you use Reanimate Corpse. — Unsigned comment by 108.15.69.247 (talk) at 01:40 on 21 December 2011

() You will be unable to complete the companions line if you kill Maro before the Companions 'Hired Muscle' quest. Feb 2012 — Unsigned comment by 72.179.23.149 (talk) at 03:19 on 5 February 2012

To clarify the above statement... The Hired Muscle quest assigns a radiant target, so the person you are supposed to brawl is somewhat random. There are many NPCs who may be targeted, and Maro is only one of many. If the target you are given in Hired Muscle is already dead, you can simply reload to a save before taking the contract, and take one from another Companion leader instead. You don't have to completely fail the Companions questline. Alphabetface 13:41, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Can we change this description?[edit]

This quest description shows up on any page that references this one with a quest link template, and it mega spoiled the entire Dark Brotherhood quest line for me. Chris3145 05:12, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

I have to support changing the description. It's a really big spoiler that ruins the whole thing. Big things like that just work better as a surprise. Although I would of course understand if it has to stay, seeing how that is what the mission is. Eric SnowmaneQuestions?Send an Email 05:17, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Bit late, but I've changed the description. TBH, it's pretty obvious what's coming if you pay attention during the quest line, but I agree this was a little bit too much. rpeh •TCE 06:48, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I was still at the very beginning of the DB, and hadn't seen gotten any story yet when I saw that description. Thanks for the change. Chris3145 07:14, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Moved for discussion[edit]

  • There are some instances when random NPCs, mainly guards and Imperial/Stormcloak couriers, wander into the ship's haul, resulting a brief conflict between the NPC with the ship's inhabitants.

Seeing how the Katiarah is a good ways out into the water, I am curious how a random NPC can stray so far out of the way as to find there way onto His Majesty's ship, so I have pulled this from the page to be looked at. ESTEC 05:56, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Emperor's HP and Execution animation.[edit]

Does the Emperor have around 1 point of health or is he always around level 1? I was able to kill him with an iron dagger, wearing nothing to boost damage. My 1H skill is at 65, but the iron dagger's damage for me is at 5 and I have no perks in 1H. I was not in sneak mode either.

Also, speaking of which, when I kill him with the iron dagger, I go into a execution scene where I apparently stab him in the back. I said apparently because I move my hand like I'm going to stab him, but the knife never makes contact. I don't even finish the animation, my character just goes back to normal. The Emperor still does the animation as normal however. Nothinglord 22:12, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Gold reward in Volunruud not consistent[edit]

I've seen reports of people only receiving 5000 gold in the urn rather than the 20,000 you are supposed to get. And when I just completed the mission there was only 55 gold there. The dialog with Nazir after retrieving the reward still seemed to think I'd received the full 20,000. It listed 20,000, 10,000 (lie), and 5,000 (lie). I did already have over 20,000 gold in my inventory from selling potions and enchanted daggers. Could the quest adjust the amount of gold received based on your current inventory? 96.18.236.52 17:38, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

My character was carrying in excess of 300k gold when she went to collect - a meagre 100g! Hard to decide whether Amaund had had the lsast laugh or she was truly happy she had killed him ... stuwade 86.174.138.1 11:43, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
The page also mentions that there will be a chest containing levelled loot. The chest for me was empty but the Urn did have the full 20,000. — Unsigned comment by 90.220.29.46 (talk) on 20 March 2012
It's possible that the urn not containing enough gold was a bug that was fixed, or maybe an NPC is stealing it? As for the chest, I've checked in the Creation Kit, and if you're really unlucky, it's possible that there'll be as little as 20 gold in it. I'm puzzled by the statement that it was empty, but perhaps whatever's causing the gold to disappear in the urn for some people is also causing it to disappear in the chest. Robin Hoodtalk 09:13, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I had the urn contain the 20,000 Gold, but the chest next to it only have 14 gold, which goes against the 20 gold minimum stated on the page. 24.185.144.24 07:30, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Still happening (urn had only 100g), so not fixed yet. — Unsigned comment by 90.149.175.0 (talk) on 11 September 2013

Dead sailor and guard[edit]

I had a dead sailor and dead guard spawn in their beds in the ship. The same room had another sailor drinking mead, I was quite confused though it didn't affect the quest in any way for me. I'm on PC. --Demian (talk) 17:47, 12 April 2013 (GMT)

Same thing happened for me. On 360 with all patches/DLC. Ivan the Vandal (talk) 00:13, 22 April 2013 (GMT)

a possible plot hole[edit]

      • SPOILER ALERT***

I've noticed one major plot hole with Skyrim. I have liberated Skyrim from the imperial oppression a few months back, but it wasn't until this past week when I picked it on the Dark Brotherhood questline. I'm doing Hail Sithis (the final quest o the DB line), but I was wondering....if Skyrim is freed from Imperial oppression, why would the Emperor still need to pay an official visit? Frithewlf (talk) 21:10, 6 July 2014 (GMT)

He comes to attend Vittoria's funeral. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:28, 6 July 2014 (GMT)
Hmmm, never thought of it, she died months ago so it completely skipped my mind Frithewlf (talk) 00:00, 7 July 2014 (GMT)

Killing the Emperor optional?[edit]

Is possible to not kill the emperor and say he's dead? I thought it could be possible since the guy who wanted him dead can be killed. Cjesseg (talk) 19:10, 11 July 2014 (GMT)

No, you cannot leave the room until the emperor is dead. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:22, 11 July 2014 (GMT)
I was able to leave though. I thought I wouldn't be able to but I left. Cjesseg (talk) 19:30, 11 July 2014 (GMT)
Well there is no dialogue option to lie about killing him. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:35, 11 July 2014 (GMT)
Ok thank you. Cjesseg (talk) 21:30, 11 July 2014 (GMT)

Worth Mentioning[edit]

Is this note really Worth mentioning "If you try an unsuccessful pickpocket on the Emperor, he will attack you and you will gain a bounty in Haafingar." I'm pretty sure most NPC's can eventuly go hostile over low disposition from unseccesful pickocket attempts. Dunehelm (talk) 04:55, 18 August 2014 (GMT)

I agree with you and have removed it from the page. •WoahBro►talk 05:06, 18 August 2014 (GMT)
Wow you guys and girls at this wiki are fast. Thats gotta be a record. Dunehelm (talk) 05:08, 18 August 2014 (GMT)

Reference to first Oblivion assassination?[edit]

Did anyone else notice that Skyrim's last official Dark Brotherhood quest line assassination takes place on a boat, in quarters similar to where your first official Oblivion assassination for the Dark Brotherhood takes place? It may or may not have been intentional, but it seems like it may be a reference to that quest to me. — Unsigned comment by 65.185.145.37 (talk) at 02:13 on 21 March 2015 (GMT)

Emperor's Spawn Location[edit]

It seems there's a bug with the Emperor's spawn location. Twice for me now he's spawned outside his door, and not gone back in even with the key in his inventory. I talked to the Emperor, and after the dialogue I opened and closed the door, and saw him make the animation like he was trying to get back in the room too, but he stayed outside it. I've noticed this bug in the officially patched version of the game and with unofficial patches too.

24.198.97.123 00:36, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Did this prevent the completion of the quest? Either way it is a bug, but the seriousness of it needs clarified. I have never experienced this but I've only done this quest about 5 times. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 17:40, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
