Young Wasps are small Giant Wasps. They are spawned by the Giant Wasp's "Inject Larva" ability, which causes several eggs to appear on your character's back. These then hatch, causing two hostile Young Wasps to appear.
Occasionally, a friendly Young Wasp follower will spawn instead, which will help you fight enemies and follow you around for a few minutes, before stopping to stay behind, disappearing, or suddenly turning hostile.
