Nelhilda

Nelhilda is a Nord patron of the Everfull Flagon and the daughter of Bernt. She actively tries to resist the Special Blend mead's power and she and her late husband Gamirth were working on a plan to free everyone. She has some skill in alchemy and before the curse hit their village, she was training to become a healer.

After she and her neighbors have been released from their curse, Nelhilda can be found at the inn in the Hollow City. During the Final Assault she will be one of those who have volunteered to help.

Special Blend[edit]

After speaking with Bernt, Nelhilda can be found upstairs near the beds. When you speak with her she will recognize that you are new.

"You're not one of the regulars here at the Flagon."
Your father sent me to help you.
"I can do this. I can resist the mead. For my Gamirth.
Father sent you? Good, I can use the help. The mead is enchanted. It muddles our minds and clouds our memories. But I may have found a way to purify the mead and stop the cravings it inspires."
What can I do?

Showing her the letter will allow her to show more details on the situation:

"I need a rare magical flower, Kyne's Tear, to make a potion. Unfortunately, the flowers are invisible. You need a Kyne runestone to see them. There may be a runestone at the nearby abandoned shrine."
I found this letter. I think it's for you.
"I knew Gamirth was gone, but … this makes it so much more final.
He worked so tirelessly to find a way to end this enchantment. I'm determined to finish what we started."
Why are you all here in Coldharbour?
"Gamirth believed it had something to do with a Daedric Prince and a bad bargain. If that's true, we never figured out who struck the deal.
All I'm certain of is that the mead is delicious and it never runs out. And drinking it has cost us our souls."
Do you just stay within the tavern?
"Yes. We stay inside and drink. We have no souls. We were afraid to die in this godforsaken place. Nords without souls aren't welcome in Sovngarde, you know.
The Thane does what he can to keep us happy, usually by opening another cask of mead."
You have no souls?
"Not a one in the whole place. Some of us shrivel up and turn into the creatures outside. Others run off to die, like my Gamirth did. The rest of us drink.
I abstain from the mead for a while, try to remember the old days. Then the craving returns."
You and your father seem less drunk than the others.
"I've been fighting the craving, trying to find a way to break the spell. I want to save my father and the villagers, if I can.
As for my father—he was always a strong man. The mead never seemed to affect him the way it got to the rest of us."
How do I find Kyne's Tears again?
"The flowers grow around the trees near the lake, but they only reveal themselves to someone who carries a runestone of Kyne.
There's a deserted shrine to Kyne not far from here. You should be able to find a runestone there."

Speaking to her again, she's trying to resist the mead:

"I could sure use a mead right about now, but I need to keep a clear head. Otherwise we'll never break this enchantment."

Once you have collected the flowers, you can return to Nelhilda.

"You came back. I was afraid I'd imagined our earlier discussion.
My mind plays tricks on me. Especially when the craving gets really bad."
I found the flowers you asked for.
Nelhilda brews the Purifying Potion
"I wasn't sure any of the flowers survived the trip here. Coldharbour is a dead place and Kyne is concerned with living things. If you found the flowers, maybe she hasn't abandoned us.
I'll make the purifying potion now."
Here you go.

With the flowers in hand, Nelhilda will head over to the nearby alchemy set.

Nelhilda: "I hope I remember the recipe correctly. It's been so long since I've tried to do anything more complicated than downing a mug of mead in one gulp."
<She brews the potion.>
Nelhilda: "One more thing … there! That should do it!"
Nelhilda: "Take the potion and pour it into the three casks. I … need … some mead!"

After making the potion, Nelhilda will give in to the cravings and head downstairs to one of the casks.

"I try so hard to resist, but sometimes it's too much. It was easier when Gamirth was here to help me."

If you speak with her after pouring the potion into the casks, she will no longer remember working with you previously.

"You're not one of the Flagon regulars."

When you speak with Bernt afterwards he will admit the curse is his fault and will ask you to find some belongings to help rally the people. When you get back you will learn that the Thane lashed out at Bernt and the patrons stopped him. The Thane will reveal himself to be the Daedra behind the original bargain before disappearing. When you go upstairs to speak with Bernt, Nelhilda will be at his side.

"That so-called Thane threatened me for tampering with the casks.
My father pushed him away from me and that dreadful … creature … he knocked my father down. I was afraid he might kill him."
Are you all right?
"I'm fine. I need a drink and I miss Gamirth terribly, but otherwise I'm fine. Just a little shaken up.
Gamirth always said that there was something strange about that Thane. I'm just glad my father wasn't injured."

Once you deal with Fellrig and free the patrons' souls, you can return to the Everfull Flagon. Nelhilda will be remembering things more clearly.

"My mind is clearing, I remember more and more. I was studying to be a healer once."

When you speak with Bernt, you will convince him to tell his daughter the truth. She will not take it well.

"How can I ever forgive you for this? I never want to see you again!"
Bernt the Brittle: "Nelhilda, please come here."
Nelhilda: "What is it, father?"
Bernt the Brittle: "I need to get this off my chest. I made the deal that doomed us. I made the bargain with the Daedric Prince."
Nelhilda: "Father! Why would you do such a thing? I lost my love to this cursed place because you weren't selling enough mead?"
Nelhilda: "How can I ever forgive you for this? I never want to see you again!"
<Nelhilda runs down the stairs.>
Bernt the Brittle: "Nelhilda was the only thing that kept me sane in this dread place. What will I do now?"
<Bernt follows his daughter and goes downstairs.>
Bernt the Brittle: "I beg of you, daughter. Try to forgive me. What I did was a foolish mistake. I never imagined anyone else would be at risk."
Nelhilda: "I don't know what to do. I'm so angry at him … and yet … my father is all I have left."

You can then speak with her and help her make a decision.

"Look what my father's selfishness has cost us! How could he have been so foolish?"
Do you think you can forgive your father?
"That's asking a lot of me.
My father always seemed more … aware. I sometimes wondered if he knew more than he let on. But to have caused all of this suffering? My poor Gamirth!"
You need to forgive Bernt. He's the only family you have left.
"I know. I keep thinking about how kind he could be. Always helping others. He did something terribly foolish, but I know he is not a bad man.
I'll try to forgive him. But I do wish we could leave this place."
The Hollow City is safe. You should go there.
"We will go to the Hollow City. Some of the villagers may decide to stay here, where it's familiar, but that will be their choice.
I grieve for the lost, but it's not in a Nord's nature to just give up. Thank you for helping us."
Bernt needs to be punished. He can remain here.
"Yes, he can stay here in his precious tavern. Atone for his sins in solitude. I don't think I can ever forgive him.
I keep thinking of Gamirth. That note you gave me broke my heart. I … I want to leave this place."
Go to the Hollow City with anyone who wants to leave. You'll be safe there.
"I'll lead any villagers that wish to join me to the Hollow City. A few may decide to remain here, where it's familiar, but that's up to them.
I don't know if I'll ever forgive my father. He can remain here and help anyone who wanders in."

If you have her to try to forgive him and before you turn in the quest, she will alternatively say:

"I may never understand why he did it, but I'll try to forgive my father for what he's done."
The Hollow City is safe. You should go there. (Leads to quest completion dialogue)

If you have her not forgive him and before you turn in the quest, she will alternatively say:

"I won't forgive my father for this. I can't!"
Take the others to the Hollow City. You'll be safe there. (Leads to quest completion dialogue)

If you convince her to try and forgive him, the following will happen:

Nelhilda: "I think I can forgive you, father, though it may take time. For now, it's best if we leave this place."
Bernt the Brittle: "Oh, my dear girl. I will do everything in my power to make this up to you and to the others."
Nelhilda: "Listen, everyone! We're going to the Hollow City! Join us! We're Nords and we can handle whatever Coldharbour throws our way!"
Nelhilda: "Come, father. We need to make plans to travel to the Hollow City."

If you talk to her she will mention that they will start moving out soon.

"I love my father, despite the mistakes he's made. We'll gather what we can and start out for the Hollow City shortly."

However, if you decided that her father should pay, this will happen instead.

Nelhilda: "I keep thinking of Gamirth and what happened to him. I don't think I can forgive you, father, but I'll try not to hate you."
Bernt the Brittle: "No, Nelhilda, please! What will we do? What will we do?"
Nelhilda: "Listen, everyone! I am going to the Hollow City. We will be safer there. It is time for most of us to leave this cursed tavern."
Nelhilda: "You can stay here, father. In your precious tavern. Think about what your success has cost you and remember all that you have lost."

Bernt will turn to the bar and speak to no one in particular:

Bernt the Brittle: "Maybe one day Nelhilda will find it in her heart to forgive me. I'll stay here and wait. Help anyone who happens by. And drink. There's always drink."

Nehlhilda will run upstairs. If you follow her and speak to her, she'll only say:

"My father can rot here, for all I care! We'll gather what we can and head for the Hollow City shortly."

The Citadel Must Fall[edit]

Nelhilda will have come to the Endless Stair with some Everfull Patrons to fight daedra and can be found near the portal.

"This is so exciting! I sat around in a drunken stupor for so long, it feels so good to be finally doing something!
Of course, we are going up against Molag Bal. Maybe I picked the wrong day to stop drinking."

The Final Assault[edit]

After you have been briefed for the mission, you can ask Nelhilda what she and her people can do.

"A drunk Nord is worth a dozen of these sober milk-drinkers. Imagine how valuable a sober Nord can be.
I haven't been in a good brawl in a long time. I'm looking forward to it!"
You and your people are willing to fight for us?
"We're ready to give those Daedra the beatings they so richly deserve! Kyne only knows how long we were stuck in that tavern. We might be a little rusty, but we're strong and willing to fight.
My people will help. I promise you that."
I appreciate the help.
Nelhilda during the Final Assault
"It will be good to get some blood on our knuckles again. We've been lazy for too damn long.
Just tell us where and when and leave the rest to me!"

As you fight your way to the Reinforcement Portal, she may show up, leading some Everfull Patrons into battle. Her hair will be tied up and she will have donned armor.

Nelhilda: "Let's show them how we fight back in Skyrim, my friends!"

Once the particular group of Daedra are dead, she will lead her friends away.

Dialogue[edit]

After you free the patrons from their curse you can find Nehilda in the Shining Star in the City.

"Good to see you again, friend!"
Everyone made it here all right?
"The trip was not without its perils, but everyone watched out for each other.
The Groundskeeper told us we could settle here, in the Shining Star Inn. Rather nice place, don't you think?"

The dialogue will then diverge depending on the choice involving Bernt. If you asked her to try and forgive him:

It is nice. Did your father come with you?
"Yes. He gets tired easily, but we keep an eye on him.
I'm glad you told me to try to forgive him. He made a dreadful mistake. I can tell he grieves at the suffering he caused. At heart, he's a good man."
Did you tell the other patrons what really happened?
"No. I thought about it. I'm glad he was honest with me. The others would just get angry at him, and what purpose would that serve?
Everyone just accepts that some strange curse befell us and that you came along and broke it."

If she left him at the Everfull Flagon:

It is nice. Did your father stay at the Everfull Flagon?
"Indeed he did. A couple of others remained behind as well. They didn't want to risk the journey.
I've tried to temper my anger at my father, for causing so much pain. But I can't find it in my heart to forgive him. Not yet."
Did you tell the other patrons what really happened?
"I did. I felt they were owed an explanation for the lost years and lost lives. So Bernt would not really be welcome here, even if I do find it in my heart to forgive him."

Notes[edit]
