Foresters Attacking Each Other[edit]

I once saw two Foresters killing eachother for no appearant reason. Anyone experienced the same thing? — Unsigned comment by 82.182.205.89 (talk) at 18:49 on 25 July 2007 (UTC)

It happens all the time. If, for instance, they were both shooting at the same creature and one accidentally hit the other, they will start attacking each other. It's a well-known problem with the AI. --RpehTalk 07:54, 26 July 2007 (EDT)
That's what I first thought. But the two foresters near Applewatch ALWAYS fight. I'm not sure about this but I noticed that whenever I summon creatures to attack random deer in the wilderness and a guard sees it, he attacks my creature right away. So I think a guard is supposed to attack/arrest anyone who attacks deer. But at the same time, as foresters they are supposed to hunt deer. Since most the time there's only one guy he gets away with it, but here since two of them are nearby they start attacking each other for assaulting the deer. --Sundaroct131088 14:27, 18 August 2007 (EDT)
There is something glitchy about the AI here. I did various tests spawning Foresters and deer (and had a standard Imperial Legion guy on horseback ride by in the middle of the fun and join in). First, attacking a deer is not actually a crime. My character could attack and kill a deer in front of any type of guardsperson, and I received no bounty for the attack. Second, all the legionnaires would happily coexist as long as there weren't any living deer in the area.
But when I spawned a deer in the vicinity, things would always got ugly. The moment a forester would see the deer and start running after it, any other legionnaires would start attacking the forester. This would happen even before the forester had a chance to pull out his bow: he definitely had not fired any arrows at anyone, and definitely had not accidentally hit any NPCs. It is seems to just be the forester's AI status (i.e., switching to attack mode) that is triggering the reaction from other guardspeople.
I can't see any obvious explanation for this AI glitch. There is no reason for any legionnaires to automatically ally themselves with deer (none of the disposition modifiers for any of the relevant factions apply to the creature faction or the prey faction, which are the two factions for deer). So I'm guessing it is just a programmed reaction any time a guardsperson sees someone go into attack mode: the guardsperson always has to go after someone involved in the attack. I can't speculate what all the factors are that influence the guardsperson's decision about whom to help and whom to attack. But in this case the deer always seems to be selected as the victim and the forester as the aggressor, presumably because the deer is fleeing and has never tried to retaliate. --NepheleTalk 21:46, 26 August 2007 (EDT)
This reminds me of another strange glitch, and I wonder if they're connected. Edla Dark-Heart, one of the Marksman trainers, has a habit of going hunting for horses. She will even attack horses in the stables around Bruma, which makes it somewhat dangerous to park your horse there when you visit. Now, the mounted guardsmen are by default always allied with their horses, which makes sense, of course. But if you consider that horses and deer share a common faction in that they are both considered "prey" (at least for people like Edla), it may be that it is not the guards that are going out to defend the hapless deer, but their horses, and the guards of course will attack anything their horse sees as threatening, since they are allied with the horse. --TheRealLurlock Talk 00:05, 27 August 2007 (EDT)
Just try summoning something instead of attacking the deer yourself. The guard should attack your summon immediately. I've had this happen so many times. Also sometimes if you follow legion soldiers and summon creatures or bring along a Mage Apprentice/DB Murderer to help them beat the enemies they encounter, there's a chance that the soldier will attack your ally after killing the enemy. Like you said this has something to do with the "attack mode". The only character unaffected by this glitch is the player. --Sundaroct131088 08:03, 27 August 2007 (EDT)

Foresters[edit]

Do they respawn after dying? --Merco 07:49, 21 October 2007 (EDT)

Yes - after the usual three days or so. --RpehTCE 08:12, 21 October 2007 (EDT)

Fire Arrows?[edit]

I once saw a Forester shooting fire arrows. Has anybody else seen this? --TheOtherZack70.0.169.164 15:39, 9 September 2008 (EDT)

I'm afraid you're mistaken - they only have steel arrows. It must have been an optical illusion. –RpehTCE 01:31, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
It may have been an enchanted bow, if his original bow (Fine Steel Bow) broke or if it was knocked out of his hands, he may have picked up a fallen enemy's bow or something. Icko 11:06, 7 December 2008 (EST)

Assault[edit]

I killed one of these mistaking it for a bandit, but I didn't get a bounty for the attack or the murder. Is this always the case? Using most recent PC version with unofficial patch. Sorlac 05:32, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

You probably were too far away from civilization to get a bounty. It's a Teddy Lich! 02:21, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Were you sneaking, or did you kill him in one hit? Foresters are considered gaurds, so unless you killed him before he could react, or you have a small bug/glitch, they can report and administer punishment for a crime even in the middle of nowhere. -Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs) 02:40, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Text mistake[edit]

I noticed a small mistake in the subtitles. The forester said: "But it looks like you can take care of yourself in the wild.", the subtitles left out the word "care". — Unsigned comment by 83.81.45.132 (talk) at 11:27 on 27 September 2010 (UTC)

The actual text is "I don't see many wanderers out here in the wild. But you look like you can take of yourself." if someone wants to add it as a bug. rpeh •TCE 14:05, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

New forester?[edit]

I found another forester east of Haunted Mine. Is this the forester mentioned by being "deep in Blackwood, far to the east of Nocturnal?" If so, that wouldnt be a very good description. — Unsigned comment by C0rTeZ48 (talkcontribs) at 11:37 on 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Purpose of Foresters[edit]

I do have to wonder, what is the purpose of these guys? Do they work in the Legion as hunters? This seems like a strange job to have as part of the Legion. - UnknownUsername (talk) 15:26, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

Since they hunt deer, perhaps their purpose is to get meat for the cities to live from. At least I think this is their intention. Beyond that, perhaps also a bit of a task of keeping part of the wilderness rather 'safe'. C0rTeZ48 (talk) 23:31, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
They have a multitude of jobs, whereas Forester is their title and fails to describe them all. The duties seem to be routine patrols, guarding inns, scouting and monitoring Daedric cults(shrines), hunting, and by extension of the Legion probably have administrative duties like tax collection, relaying information, and generally "doing the right thing" when the situation calls for it. Gameplay-wise, I would surmise they are immersion-boosters and an extension of the bounty mechanic. Since guards and the context of crime would otherwise be limited to cities, it presents crime-related challenges and gameplay when you are not expecting it, which might be dangerous as a low-level Gray Fox. One with a bounty might also be fooled into speaking to them, causing their own capture or fight to the death(we've all done it).--CazadorDeLobo (talk) 03:36, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
