Respawning[edit]

Do the Highwaymen respawn after they have been killed?--Merco 14:59, 22 August 2007 (EDT)

The four highwaymen who are guaranteed to appear will not respawn. However, the other two, who have a 50% chance of appearing, will respawn. --NepheleTalk 02:10, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

Getting stopped by one[edit]

He will stop you instantly, even if you are running at full gallop on the fastest horse money can buy.

I don't agree with this statement, simply because using Prior Maborel's horse in the past, I have run right by the highwayman who lurks near Fort Ash on a scenic journey along the Black Road and he didn't have a chance to talk to me and initiate the "pay or fight" situation. He did, however, chase my horse a bit of the way down the road, although not as far as he's chased me when I was on foot in previous savegames (he's chased me all the way INTO the Priory House in Weynon Priory and was killed by the three Talos monks).

Although, I'm not entirely sure this wasn't just an isolated incident because I only recall zipping past him on horseback once, and I don't recall which patch version I was running at the time, so it may have been rectified since. --Skogul 22:38, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

He is like all NPCs that automatically initiate a conversation with you. He will move towards (or after ) you and if you are close enough to him, regardless of your speed, you will be dragged into the conversation menu. This happens in many quests (Liberation or Apprehension, The Hist, Unfriendly Competition, Find the Heir, etc), although in these instances it will occur when you enter a room, so you are generally too close to avoid conversation.
If you can avoid moving close and outrun the Highwayman, it is possible to avoid confronting him. However, if you move close enough to him (or he moves close enough to you), the game will initiate a conversation with him. --Saruuk 22:55, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
I tested it on the Fort Ash highwayman as well as a few others I knew the locations of yesterday and you're right. If I was just far away enough from their paths to get by before they could suck me into conversations, I was in the clear, but if I was in the middle or on their side of the road, they'd get me, even on a white horse. I guess I was just lucky in the past. :) --Skogul 04:34, 24 September 2007 (EDT)

No Convo[edit]

Has anyone else been stopped by these guys, and then have them just walk away from you? I noticed this happening and wanted to know if there was a reason for it. I've never payed any of them, but my infamy is well over 100, if that has anything to do with it. I almost certain my character was not a vampire at the time either. Darkle 18:38, 1 May 2008 (EDT)

It's probably your infamy. As noted here, the disposition of people with low responsibility is increased by your infamy. --Gaebrial 02:31, 8 May 2008 (EDT)
Thanks much! Darkle 22:08, 9 May 2008 (EDT)

Confrontations as a Vampire[edit]

If you are a full vampire, it is possible that the highwayman will confront you, give the standard "Get back you filthy beast" statement, and then walk away without bothering you. Yet another reason to enjoy vampires. — Unsigned comment by 71.34.136.208 (talk) at 04:28 on 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Poverty response[edit]

I understand that you can only plead poverty if you have less than 100 gold on you person. C_Garrison 12:58, 18 November 2007 (EST)

Guaranteed Highwaymen?[edit]

I believe that they will always have Fur Armor and Iron Weapons. I just encountered one at level 40, only to be met by a fur clad, iron axe wielding bandit. — Unsigned comment by 71.252.62.174 (talk) at 19:10 on 27 June 2008 (UTC)‎

No, I'm quite sure their equipment is leveled. Check the image in the article. --Saruuk 11:59, 29 June 2008 (EDT)

Friends don't take from friends[edit]

Once when i saw a Highwayman, i gave him the 100 gold, talked to him, and got his disposition high. Then i waited for a bit, walked off a bit, came back, and he ran up to me and talked to me, but he just said "Hello" and displayed the Rumor's option. So i'm guessing if its the same highwayman, and you get him to like you, he won't take from you. (I did this at the highwayman on the bridge of the suicidal troll) — Unsigned comment by Lucky the Cat Guy (talkcontribs) at 15:38 on 3 August 2008‎ (UTC)

Another Highwayman[edit]

I've come across a highwayman who isn't mentioned on this page. He's standing at the crossroads of the Yellow Road and the Unmarked road to Malada. Since this is the first time I've encountered one here, I assume he falls into the category possible Highwayman. Can someone with access to the CS check if there really is one around here, and not just one who has wandered off quite a bit in my game? Only males?[edit]

Is it confirmed that there are only male highwaymans? I remember that I've once met the female highwayman near Bruma. - ZuTheSkunk 07:13, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

no i've charmed a female khakiit bbandint and "hand over the mony or die" happend--GUM!!! 12:44, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
For those that are actually called "Highwayman", they're only male Khajiit. As GUM points out, though, there are female bandits, so that's probably what you're thinking of. Robin Hoodtalk 16:19, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Argonian[edit]

The page said that(If you have completed the Main Quest, there is a 2-3% chance (depending upon disposition) that a Highwayman will be friendly. Furthermore, if he is the first Argonian or Khajiit you have met since completing the main quest, he will always say: The bards will be busy composing songs in your honor for years to come. To think that we lived through such times!)

Why there are Argonian highwayman (Vvardfell 10:12, 16 November 2010 (UTC))

Where do they go?[edit]

I encountered the highwayman at Fort Ash, gave him money, toke it back, and befriended him. After a few minutes he walked away into the forest, but I didn`t follow him. Where does he go?~~Argonian8 9:19PM,March,10/2011

He shouldn't of gone far, there AI packages only ensure that they will speak to you when they see you, and the other to make sure he doesn't wander away. He might of seen a monster and got killed, but I have no clue what else might of happened to him. --AKB Talk Contribs Email 02:30, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Dialogue?[edit]

Between their greetings and reactions to what option is chosen during the forced conversation, highwaymen have a good bit of unique dialogue. However, it's not present on the page. Should it be included? I would gather it myself, but it could be a bit difficult to be accurate since I play on the Xbox 360. Forfeit (talk) 01:22, 6 May 2013 (GMT)
