Silence for D seconds

Silence is the bane of all spellcasters, as you cannot cast spells while silenced. It is still possible to use potions, staves, and scrolls, however. A spell is not interrupted if the silence hits after casting is begun. Silence effects from spells can be cancelled using the Dispel effect (e.g., from a potion or scroll). It can only be cancelled through the Cure Poison effect if the Silence effect comes from a Poison.

Notes[edit]

  • This effect can be gained for spell making and enchanting via spells or achieving 75% Vampirism, which bestows the ability Reign of Terror.
  • Silence is one of the enchantments available for making a custom mage's staff (it is also found on random generic staves).
  • Silence has no magnitude, only a duration. Therefore, Weakness to Magic and Resist Magic or Weakness to Poison and Resist Poison effects respectively change the duration of a Silence effect; casting a 100% Weakness to Magic spell causes the duration of a subsequent Silence spell to be doubled. Similarly, Spell Effectiveness decreases the Silence duration.
  • Despite its name, Silence does not prevent you or NPCs from engaging in dialogue, nor does it stop them from groaning or screaming in combat. In fact, unlike other spell effects, a Silence spell itself causes NPCs to groan in pain when hit by it.
  • Silence is considered hostile, even though it causes no damage.

Alchemy Ingredients[edit]

The following alchemy ingredients can be used to create a poison of Silence:

Novice
Apprentice
Journeyman
Expert

Note: Since Vampire Dust has two varieties, it is actually possible to make a poison of Silence at Novice level using one of each type. However, one of the Vampire Dust varieties is of limited supply and some is needed for a quest, so you should be careful not to waste it all.
