The Forgotten Hero is an individual whose adventures are told by a moth priest named Kellen. The hero was captured by a Dremora, Reive, and managed to escape with a fellow captive, a Blade named Tyr during the Great War. They discovered that Lord Naarifin tried to bring about a prophecy known as the Culling, for which he intended to sacrifice all of the Imperial City's inhabitants. With the help of Tyr's friend Laaneth and a smuggler named Swims-At-Night, they found the Emperor, who tasked them with infiltrating the Thalmor-controlled Imperial City and discovering how the Thalmor were predicting the Legion's actions. The four of them discovered that Naarifin had been using the Orb of Vaermina to scry on the Legion's actions, though Naarifin caught them and had Rieve hold Tyr hostage, forcing the hero to choose between Tyr's life or the orb. The hero's choice is not known, but Rieve was killed in the ensuing battle. After a failed assassination attempt left the emperor too wounded to ride into battle himself, the hero disguised themself in the Emperor's armor, and led an attack on the Imperial City to defeat Naarifin.[1]

The Forgotten Hero also played a role in the fall of the Dark Brotherhood during 4E 188. The hero was recruited by a man named Uther Nere, who asked them to infiltrate the Dark Brotherhood and kill the listener, Alisanne Dupre, under the guise of avenging his family, who Uther claimed were killed by the Dark Brotherhood. In reality, Alisanne was his daughter, who he wanted dead as the sole witness to his murder of his wife, Alisanne's mother. The hero aided the citizens of Wayrest, captured a traitor in the Falkreath Sanctuary, and was present when Alisanne was killed in Bravil. It is unconfirmed whether the hero decided to continue aiding Uther in killing Alisanne, or turn against him in an attempt to protect Alisanne after learning the truth.[2]

In 4E 201, the Forgotten Hero was recruited by Swims-At-Night to locate Barilzar's Mazed Band. They raced against a gang of rival treasure hunters, led by Aldora the Daring and hired by a disguised Mecinar, a former apprentice of Sotha Sil. After finding the band, the pair was ambushed by the treasure hunters and Swims-At-Night was transported with them into the Clockwork City. The hero enlisted the help of Laaneth, uncovered a rogue sorcerer in the College of Winterhold, and the two of them were transported to the Clockwork City by Alfe Fyr. Here, the hero met a group of Sotha Sil's worshippers led by Galyn the Shelterer, and uncovered Mecinar's plans to achieve godhood with Sotha Sil's reconstruction of Lorkhan's Heart. Attempting to stop Mecinar, the hero obtained replicas of Wraithguard, Sunder, and Keening created by Sotha Sil. During their battle with Mecinar, the hero used these tools to either harness the power of the Heart for themself, thus preserving the city & the worshippers but being destroyed in the process; or destroyed the Heart, removing Mecinar's powers but destroying the Heart & city in the process, forcing the worshippers to attempt to relocate. Though it is unknown which of these accounts is true, it is known that Mecinar was stopped either way.[3]

Notes[edit]

  • The Forgotten Hero may have wielded the Goldbrand at the Battle of the Red Ring while impersonating Emperor Titus Mede II. This led to a pervasive rumor that Titus II wielded it at the battle, although this has never been officially confirmed by the Imperial government.[4][5]
