When an NPC reanimated with Dead Thrall (using the spell or the Staff of Worms) is loaded, sometimes they will regenerate their initial armor if they were naked. In some cases this can be used to duplicate rare or otherwise unique equipment. Weapons are not regenerated in this way, and it only works with their initial equipment, not anything you provide after.
