Bad Dates[edit]

What happens if the meeting didn't go well? What are the other two options besides optimism to give Sunel? C Teng [talk] 21:44, 5 October 2008 (EDT)

I've played this through three times but never had it go bad yet. I've marked it as a good question for now so we know it needs answering. –RpehTCE 00:48, 6 October 2008 (EDT)

If it doesn't go well, then you do not get the bipolar blade. The quest ends, the girl you asked to meet Sunel likes you less, and Sunel himself doesn't want to talk to you. Quite a bummer.97.89.58.122 16:29, 18 December 2008 (EST)

I've taken a look at Sunel's dialogue and the accompanying scripts, and it works as follows.
The success of the date is determined by a random calculation that's determined in the same moment Sunel gets placed back into his shop after the date. This random number is between 0 and 99, and if it's over a certain number (from now on Difficulty Level), the date is successful. If it's below the Difficulty Level or they are equal, the date fails and you won't get a reward.
The Difficulty Level depends on what advice you gave Sunel before the date:
  • If you've told him to be optimistic, the Difficulty Level is 33. This means the date has a 66% chance to be successful.
  • If you've told him to be himself, the Difficulty Level is 50. This means the date has a 50% chance to be successful.
  • If you've told him to talk about his late wife, the Difficulty Level is 85. This means the date has a 15% chance to be successful.
This info is based on Sunel's dialogue and scripts, but I've taken a brief look at the other two men's options, and it seems they use the same mechanics. If anyone feels like it, they are free to add this information to the article. --81.183.145.25 14:20, 10 February 2009 (EST)
All now added to the article. Thanks! –RpehTCE 14:26, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Note that Morrowind Patch Project adds missing dialogue for the case that you talk to the suitor when the date went bad. I guess the original game just leaves you hanging dialogue-wise? --HunterZ (talk) 07:16, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

More coverage on the other men?[edit]

I think this article could benefit for having a little more coverage on the other two date options for this quest. Don't get me wrong, this article is well-written, but I find it to only give real focus to the third option, Sunel Hlas, because he gives the "best" reward. It does not cover the advice options and success calculations for Goval and Fons, as you can give them advice before the date too, not just to Sunel. I am not sure how the calculations for them work though, so I don't how to add it myself.

Granted, Sunel may still be the best choice, but I do think that if a quest has multiple solutions, all of them should be objectively covered since: A) the usefulness for a reward may be subjective (I, for one, found Goval's reward to be more useful for my character), and B) You may not always do a quest for the reward alone. For example, you may actually want to choose Fons for some reason anyway. Just a thought. Kalrot 21:47, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Agreed. I've slapped an {{Incomplete}} tag on it for now to mark it for later. Talk page posts tend to get lost after a while. rpeh •TCE 22:34, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
Personally I think the only reason you would want to do the quest is to get the BiPolar Blade. The incomplete thing is overkill, considering that the article says what happens and your reward. But those edits may have been made and they didn't remove the tag. Just someone should probably read over it as it is now and consider whether or not it needs that tag. — Unsigned comment by 68.59.234.55 (talk) on 26 February 2010
As was explained by Kalrot in his initial post, the third option is indeed the best one; but that shouldn't mean we refrain from discussing the other two in the same detail. The Incomplete Tag is correct. --SerCenKing Talk 22:55, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Sunel Hlas[edit]

Is there any reason why I do not get the 3 options with him? (Such as 'Be optimistic'.) I've talked to Marena to start, talked to Sunel about her, talked to Marena to meet him at the Winged Guar, then finally talked to Sunel to meet her. After that he says he is getting ready, and I can only select 'Goodbye'. Can't see them at the Winged Guar, and stripping didn't get Sunel to talk. — Unsigned comment by 82.34.89.211 (talk) on 22 August 2010

It takes a while for the date to start, but I don't know why you're not getting the three options. rpeh •TCE 10:36, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
I had this issue myself -- I found another FAQ that explicitly said you have to talk to Sunel about Marena twice before closing the dialog box in order to get the options to come up. If you only talk to him about her once, you won't be able to give him any advice. 209.107.217.214 13:33, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
I edited the page after the last question and corrected and expanded the information. It's now a bit clearer than it was. rpeh •TCE 13:42, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Resetting the quest[edit]

In case anyone else gets bit by the stupid random factor in this quest, I studied the game data in the construction set and found (via in-game testing) that you can completely reset it via the following commands:

set MatchMakeFons to 0
set MatchMakeGoval to 0
set MatchMakeSunel to 0
set MatchMakeSwitch to 0
setjournalindex MS_MatchMaker 0
stopscript MatchMakeFons
stopscript MatchMakeGoval
stopscript MatchMakerTimer
stopscript MatchMakeSunel

Also: The random check happens in a script that runs after 3 days. This means that if you save after setting up the date but before resting/waiting for 3 days, and then get an undesirable outcome after resting/waiting, you can reload, rest/wait, and check again until you get the desired outcome.

Worst[edit]

This quest is worst piece of sh*t I ever seen on Morrowind. I have no idea if my game is buggy or I have worst luck on Earth but to get positive outcome (after best advice to any of three men) I need around 19 save/load to get one single fu*king success... anyone know mod that will remove that randomised chance? --87.207.108.197 09:41, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
