Data Collection[edit]

I summoned Vulthuryol at L48. It took 6 shots, all from sneak w/3x perk + 1 critical hit in addition to the sneak bonus, with 189 pts of base damage (Bow + Arrow) and +17 shock damage, + 2 Lingering Damage poisons at 22 pts for 10 sec + 2 damage poisons w/117 damage. 4745 total damage out on that kill. 24.156.216.144 07:26, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Carlotta Valentia and I killed him, then I used console commands to resurrect him and make him a potential follower. He just sat there until I tried to move him to the courtyard by disable/moveto/enable. Then he took to flight and began burning up the falmer and servants in the upper tiers of the Hall of Rumination. =) He's continuing to fly around and roar now, so not sure if he'll stay after cell reset. Will test. --Tiger8u2 01:26, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Article image is too dark.[edit]

The picture of Vulthuryol in the article is too dark, I think. I have a brighter picture of him, but I don't know what the regulations are on image size here and I also don't know how to upload an image to the talk page... If anyone else with more know-how can get a brighter picture of him and add it to the article, that'd be nice. 75.33.138.18 11:04, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

That'd be great; my version is rubbish. For the image size, it should be square (Y by Y pixels). Jpegs are the preferred format, but I'd say pngs are fine as well. To replace the current image, you'll need to create an account and then upload at this link. If your image is in a different format you won't be able to replace it, but try to use the same file name when uploading (e.g., SR-creature-Vulthuryol.png). --Legoless 17:12, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah a better pic would be great. Just hard to get one due to how dark Blackreach is! Lord Eydvar 20:45, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

the nidhogg?[edit]

This may be a reference to the Nidhogg in Norse mythology, as he was a dragon living underneath the earth. Athathar 16:49, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Alduin is the reference to Nidhogg. --Lee 95 20:56, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure about this[edit]

But isn't Alduin resurrecting the Dragons? If so, how has he been able to resurrect Vulthuryol inside Blackreach? I actually haven't played through the whole story yet, so I'm sorry if I am wrong about this, also, I wish you wouldn't spoil the game for me if you do answer this. — Unsigned comment by 82.215.218.155 (talk) at 23:41 on 24 December 2011

Maybe he never died in the first place. --Legoless 23:47, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, he probably never died, since there's no burial site in Blackreach. 82.243.194.53 13:01, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
I assume he somehow got trapped in blackreach before the Dragon War in which case he probably never died. As far as I could see, there are no openings for Alduin to get in or Vulthuryol to get out so ressurection is a long shot at best. I figure he shows up the way he does cause he's probably lonely after all that time and decided to check out whoever knew his language. 69.251.52.20 12:21, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
This is entirely speculation, of course, but there might be another explanation. The Dwemer were all about taming the divine or the immortal and harnessing its power into their machines, and they appeared to be very intolerant of sharing their living space with others, much less a dragon. It's conceivable that the Dwemer might have sealed Vulthuryol, or at least his power, into the artifical sun over the fortress. It would make sense considering Vulthruyol's presence underground, the Dwemer track record for dealing with other species, the energies they harnessed in their technology and the need for a Dragon Shout to cause him to appear.24.116.188.107 06:21, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
The Wizard did it!58.7.154.157 16:34, 25 September 2012 (GMT)
You may well be correct here, since Neloth goes on and on about how fascinating it would be to trap a dragon and use it as an experimental subject. Great minds think alike, and all that. I was a little surprised that the game didn't have you go dragon-hunting for him. 174.6.51.17 02:14, 22 January 2014 (GMT)

Flame or Frost[edit]

Is Vulthuryol set as either a Flame or Frost Dragon, or is it random? Which does he use? --Debatra 23:45, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

I already saw him using Frost in one of my playthrough, and Fire in the last one. In fact, aside Paarthurnax and Alduin, I think every dragon in the game can shout either Frost or Fire 82.243.194.53 10:07, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Flying[edit]

Is anyone else having a problem with Vulthuryol landing over to the side of the Silent City and refusing to fly? It's happened to me both times I've "fought" him. He'll fly around for about a minute breathing fire on falmer and then land and refuse to go anywhere else no matter what I do. Any ideas for a possible fix? It's not a huge problem, but it sucks that I go into Blackreach for an awesome indoors dragon fight and end up repetitively bashing a fire breathing rock in the face. — Unsigned comment by 138.47.100.199 (talk) at 23:41 on 6 February 2012

He's not supposed to fly, he's been trapped down there for a long time. Nothing to fix. 72.194.115.180 11:36, 26 February 2014 (GMT)

Post-Death Note[edit]

Don't you get a note from a stranger as a result of killing him inside Blackreach? Probably should go up on the page. — Unsigned comment by 66.112.165.151 (talk) at 03:20 on 7 March 2012

Since you have to shout to release him, the normal "Letter from a Friend" rules apply. Aliana 05:04, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Not showing up?[edit]

I think I cleared Blackreach before shouting Unrelenting Force on the orange orb, but no dragon showed up? I tried shouting from under and also up there by the throne and even on top of the orb down, but nothing happened! I'm level 30... 71.132.198.190 06:42, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Found it. Probably because there were no enemies at all, it never flew or shouted, and sat quietly outside the city wall waiting for me... 71.132.198.190 06:55, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Quest-related?[edit]

I wouldn't have known Vulthuryol was down here at all, let alone how to summon him, if I hadn't been browsing the wiki entry for Blackreach. Is he a quest-related "boss" or something? SonGoharotto 15:12, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Nope. Many people summoned him by accident the first time, but that's about it. Otherwise there's no way to know he's down there. Elakyn 15:29, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
I guess now I have to travel Skyrim, shouting at every big glowing thing I see. SonGoharotto 18:17, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Soulless dragon?[edit]

When I killed Vulthuryol his soul wasn't slained by Dragonborn, is that a bug or this dragon is soulless? — Unsigned comment by Tashy (talkcontribs) at 04:52 on 20 February 2013‎

Bug. — Unsigned comment by 86.20.216.148 (talk) at 11:00 on 28 February 2013

Location[edit]

Does he appear from somewhere or when summoned, does he appear out of thin air? Dragon Guard (talk) 14:27, 26 July 2013 (GMT)

Is it possible get dragonsoul from Vulthuryol without main quest?[edit]

I think he is only dragon can consume soul without take main quest.

Using draugr who using shout or dead thrall of ulfric might possible.

For example, get dead thrall of draugr, go to blackreach, then attack them for shout at me.

Does anybody try this?~~

You cannot thrall a draugr, and you cannot kill Ulfric without doing part of the main quest first. --185.39.64.128 01:24, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
