Location[edit]

Completely by random, I ran into Aldurin raising Viinturuth from the ground. It is just shy of the lake itself, on the north/east side where the river truly begins, and about 40% of the way from Anga's Mill to Bronze Water Cave, and maybe 30% of the way from the Mill to Forsaken Cave. Coming from Anga's Mill up the path, you will first see a tipped-over cart to your left on the path, and the river has a small waterfall. (If I counted right, it is the third waterfall up from the mill.) As you start to crest that rise, glance to your right and you'll see the stones surrounding the mound.

I killed him pretty quickly so I didn't notice if he was speaking. Typical dragon loot. Am level 45 and haven't completed the main quest yet. Oshaugm 23:44, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Does it speak at all? I killed him (not sure first or second time) and he turned into a pile of ash, so I figured he had been reanimated. 71.132.198.190 06:08, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Turned Invisible[edit]

Completely at random, without seeing Viinthuruth resurrected, he attacked me just northwest of Agna's mill and as soon as I attack back with spells, he went invisble, COMPLETELY and stayed that way even after death and did not give a dragon soul. O_O I have a texture replacement for all dragons but his happened to my brother too and he has no mods at all, and is a warrior instead of a mage like me o_O WEIRD AND ANNOYING!

Sorry for any typos, my iPod is crap. (first time ever saying.... ANYTHING on here.) --69.24.219.139 17:26, 3 January 2012 (UTC)ZenZen

I just had this happen to me, too - though on the Xbox 360. On my way to kill Ennodius Papius for the Dark Brotherhood, I fast-traveled to Bronze Water Cave (from Dawnstar), heard a dragon roaring and went to investigate. I never even saw Viinturuth in the first place - I just heard the roar and was suddenly bombarded with frost magic coming from nowhere. I too hadn't seen Alduin resurrect him. I didn't use magic at all, only a Fine Ancient Nord Greatsword.
This is my first post here as well. This was such a strange thing to happen. Invisible dragons are the last thing we need! — Unsigned comment by JMN17 (talkcontribs) at 17:20 on 8 January 2012
I've had this invisible glitch, too. However it's slightly different as I'm 90% certain I'd already killed Viinturuth - when I went past there, Alduin resurrected a dragon (never caught the name, but it's scripted to be Viinturuth, right?) which spawned normally with its normal skin. Next time I go past, I'm attacked by an invisible dragon, with his name - the only thing I can see is the blood decals. I've uploaded a picture here. You can just see the outline of his head. --80.2.150.91 18:25, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
I have just experienced same glitch though I have noticed the first time I killed him was after Alduin ressurected him. However, I did not see how he regained his flesh as he was already as normal dragon and his burial tomb was not altered at all. After defeating invisible respawned Viinturuth I noticed his burial tomb became empty, as if he really was ressurected from it. So, I think if after defeating his for the first time his burial tomb is not altered then expect his ghost to attack :) — Unsigned comment by 5.251.235.30 (talk) at 12:02 on 10 May 2014 (GMT)

Crash Landing[edit]

I just had a different kind of glitch, or at least something strange happened. When I was fighting this dragon, he was refusing to land (typical cowardly dragon), so I was taking him down with thunderbolts. But when he still had almost half of his life left, he came in for a crash landing, as if dead. I stopped attacking and waited to see what would happen, and sure enough he was still alive and was about to get up after playing dead for a second, so I finished him off.

I don't know if this is a bug or if some dragons are meant to crash if you hurt them enough? - Jurosem — Unsigned comment by 80.167.163.237 (talk) at 21:27 on 17 January 2012

Friendly??[edit]

I had a glitch where I seen him get resurrected by Alduin and he was friendly... He landed on one side of the river, attacked some wolves and just stared at me, doing nothing. After I ran away from him (because I couldn't hit him) I went back and found him not an enemy, but friendly. When I walked up to him, he just looked at me and sat there. I had also interrupted the resurrection and he was a skeletal dragon. This was on the Xbox and I am a Level 21. Lucien LachanceDB 00:13, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Friendly and Invincible[edit]

Went to kill Ennodius Papius for the Dark Brotherhood (as did somebody else who posted above), after killing him I minimized the window to adjust computer settings. The game collapsed on its own and when I restarted it, I tried to fast travel to White Run. Quickly the error message "no traveling with enemies by blah blah" came up so I headed West randomly to get away from this "enemy" whomever it was. Sure enough, heard a dragon, checked the skies, kept running West and found Viintruth hanging out killing some wolves. Tried to kill him, and succeeded in reducing all his health, but he stayed put and didn't die. He didn't attack back once.

What a strange glitch.— Unsigned comment by 173.171.206.109 (talk) at 02:47 on February 8, 2012

Interrupted Also But He Spoke?[edit]

I ran into Alduin summoning him so I nailed Alduin with level 3 Mark of Death. He flew around a bit and tried to continue the resurrection, so I used level 2 Call Storm with Mark of Death and then level 3 Firebreath and he just flew off for good. Viinturuth was partially sticking out of the ground, but only his spine was visible. I couldn't talk to him, but if hit with shouts he'd take damage and say something like "Speak if you have aught to say worth the listening." I reloaded and let the ritual complete and he was hostile immediately. After killing him he gave me a Dragonsoul. With him stuck in the mound, it seems perma glitched with swirling light coming out of it as if a dragon will burst forth momentarily. If I spammed the ground with dmg shouts he dies and gives me a soul which shoots out of the ground, but the skeleton isn't lootable. The lights coming out of the mound stayed until I fast traveled to Windhelm and traveled back. Alduin sure is gutless for being "THE WORLD EATER" what gives...Greyslayer 02:29, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like a one-off bug that probably occurred due to freak timing of your various shouts. Also, the game doesn't entirely reset on reload in some ways (we're still trying to pinpoint what all's affected), so it may have worked better if you'd quit the game entirely and reloaded that or a slightly earlier save. Name[edit]

Viin Tu Ruth is not translated on the page. Tu means Hammer and Ruth means Rage or Curses. Has anyone found a translation for Viin? Could it be a corruption of Viing (Wing)?-- 99.59.195.47 14:23, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

On Skyrim:Dragon is stated that the translation of Viinturuth is "Shine Hammer Runner". I think that the translator extract that from Viintaas 'Shining' as i haven't found any sources of Viin used alone. — Unsigned comment by Araglad (talkcontribs) at 18:38 on 28 May 2012
The translation is "Shine Hammer Rage" from Alduins dialogue. I'll add it to the page Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 16:40, 5 January 2013 (GMT)

Multi-dragon occurence[edit]

I had just fast-traveled to Bronze Water Cave (it just happened to be the fastest way to my destination) When I heard a dragon roar and looked up. Seeing a dragon, I pulled out my bow, and ran towards the lake to get a better look. Once I had a clear view, I saw the most terrifying sight I could imagine... THREE dragons. I fought and killed an Ancient Dragon, then turned my attention to Viinturuth. By the time I was done, there was no sign of the 3rd dragon. After reading this page, I concluded the 3rd dragon was actually Alduin, but even 2 dragons at once is a challenge. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Shadowrose6663 05:42, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

I've fought an Ancient Dragon and a Frost Dragon at the same time, and while running like hell making a tactical retreat I managed to attract a third Ancient Dragon. So, multi-dragon occurrences are definitely possible. That third dragon could've been Alduin, but it's not certain. • JATalk 18:57, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
I too ran into multiple dragons in this section, my second dragon was a frost dragon that I mistook for Aluding. I realized it was a frost dragon after defeating the first, Vinnturuth.--Boredgod 07:35, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

2 Viinturuths and invisible?[edit]

I was heading to some town - forgot name to do a task for the DB. I then saw Alduin resurrecting Viinturuth. There was nothing wrong this time and I managed to kill Viinturuth. Then again - I was sent to do another quest or contract for the DB. It involved in a place near Irkngthand. I was walking along - then I noticed a dragon. I went to investigate as everyone else would. I noticed there was no dragon - but a red dot indicating that there is an enemy? My follower started to shoot fireballs at nothing, then a name showed up. It was Viinturuth again? Viinturuth was invisible - although he would turn visible for about a second every 5 seconds or so. I had my follower defeat him alone since I couldn't see it.

Is this a glitch? Or is it just Alduin resurrecting him again after I killed him. But Alduin was never sighted near where Viinturuth was. The invisible part is clearly a bug/glitch though. — Unsigned comment by 71.119.200.217 (talk) at 01:34 on 24 July 2012‎

Buggy Alduin raised a glitchy Viinturuth[edit]

I saw a dragon in the distance from the windhelm bridge after activating Clear Skys. So I headed over to the mill where I saw the Dragon flying. It was only until I came closer did I hear the Dragon speak, and realized that it's Alduin. Alduin was somewhat stuck and kept dissapearing then reappearing and kept diving for the spot. Once I got close enough Viinturuth was raised. Alduin flew off but Viinturuth stayed behind and began ignoring me to go fight some Ice Wraith. But then he stopped fighting the Ice Wraith and instead took to flying around, not once landing or using a breath attack. It was so annoying as I don't have DragonRend but in the end I don't think that shout would of mattered. You see, after annoyingly missing 90% of my lighting bolts as I slowly wittled down the dragon's health, I finally 'Killed' him. He's now a 'dead' dragon flying in circles around me and not once has he crash landed...--67.185.108.121 06:18, 1 February 2013 (GMT)

Reloaded an earlier save and it fixed Viinturuth...however Alduin was still casting "Sliid Tiid Vok" at an empty burial mound.--67.185.108.121 06:27, 1 February 2013 (GMT)

Viinturuth in Windhelm[edit]

I was going to talk to Ulfric in Windhelm to make the peace treaty so I could capture Odahviing. Once I got into Windhelm, I heard a dragon roar and saw fire shooting off from behind Candlehearth Hall. Needless to say, I was very confused. I ran over there, but nothing was there and the ground was still on fire. Walking around closer to the Palace of the Kings, the search Viinturuth prompt came up floating in midair. He had dragon bones and gold on him and everything except he was invisible and I've already killed him before. — Unsigned comment by 71.15.43.29 (talk) at 19:29 on 12 May 2013 (GMT)

Sounds like a one-off glitch, though somewhat similar to the more common dragons falling from the sky bug. Unless this is something that is reported by other players, it's probably just a unique occurrence and not notable enough for the article. — ABCface 14:03, 10 June 2013 (GMT)
As of like right now, I can confirm its not a one-off glitch. I had just taken Windhelm and Tullius was giving his speech, when Viinturuth's corpse just suddenly manifested off to the side of the imperial troops. flopping around on the ground, dead but with its eyes open. I took a picture! Viinturuth. I have more but that was the funniest. I don't have any idea what caused it though. It wasn't like that when I went into the palace, I know that. 74.134.235.157 03:55, 26 July 2013 (GMT)
I also found Viinturuth in Windhelm. I had defeated him relatively recently but he resurrected in Windhelm with a very small amount of health. After he died (again)I was not able to absorb his soul. But he did have six dragon bones and six dragon scales, which I had not seen before. Unlike these other instances, though, I hadn't even begun the Imperial/Stormcloak storyline. 198.228.201.165 09:11, 2 August 2013 (GMT) Tal Rico
Hmm, it is interesting that this has happened to multiple players. None of you mentioned in your post, but what platforms did this happen on? It would be useful to know more details. — ABCface 13:29, 2 August 2013 (GMT)
This happened to me. I had recently stumbled upon Viin's resurrection and promptly killed him. Seemed to go fine, although his burial mound was still showing no change from the original buried setting. A few hours (at most a few game days) later I was in Windhelm for a thief guild job at Candlehearth. After the theft I left the hall to fell the tell-tale dragon vibration and noticed a red enemy indicator. I ran around the hall to where it was and saw nothing. Heard a few dragon sounds and his name was displayed. The gaurds were attacking and they killed it very quickly. After that I walked to where he was and I could loot his invisible body, he had bones and scales and a bit of gold, kinda low for what I usually get from dragons at my level (was 89 or 90 at the time.) No soul. This was on the ps3 edition that has all the dlc included. Last I checked it was the most recent update, but I haven't had a Internet connection to check in the last 4-5 months (currently Nov. 2016.)Otakuman706 (talk) 22:33, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Shout nearby?[edit]

Is there a shout nearby Viinturuth? i killed him and had a look around only to find a chest. — Unsigned comment by 99.224.86.202 (talk) at 01:31 on 14 June 2013

No, there is no word wall here. The closest word wall is at Mount Anthor, which is farther north. — ABCface 02:28, 14 June 2013 (GMT)

Viinturuth fails to resurrect[edit]

When I approach Viinturuth's barrow, Alduin casts Flesh Against Time on the mound; but Viinturuth fails to resurrect. Alduin then flies off, anti-climacticly, leaving the mound bare and unopened. Is there any way to fix this? It happens consistently. Elen Sila (talk) 02:27, 10 April 2015 (GMT)

When you writes it happens consistently, do you mean you reload and it happens each time you reload, or do you come back later, and it happens again? —MortenOSlash (talk) 04:37, 10 April 2015 (GMT)
I approached the hill. Alduin cast Flesh Against Time and then flew off without Viinturuth resurrecting. I tried reloading a save from before he cast the shout; but every single time I loaded the save and approached the mound, when Alduin would cast the shout, Viinturuth would consistently fail to resurrect.
Every single time I passed by that mound thereafter— I don't fast-travel— the mound was still completely covered-up and unopened, with one of Viinturuth's spine bones sticking out through the top of it. Then, on probably the third or fourth time I passed by the mound, dozens of hours of gameplay after I had first seen Alduin there, after I got several hundred yards away from it, I heard a dragon sound, turned around, and saw Viinturuth flying around over the mound. He had spawned in, literally days after he was supposed to have been resurrected. Elen Sila (talk) 04:38, 27 April 2015 (GMT)
Something like this has happened to me too, including the spine bone sticking out, though I managed to get close enough to attack Alduin before he broke of. I would say it could indicate the aborted resurrection could be scripted. Can anyone check this? —MortenOSlash (talk) 06:14, 27 April 2015 (GMT)

Not leveling[edit]

I have encountered three of these named dragons that are supposed to match my level, and yet they have all been level 10. I have Deadly Dragons and Diverse Dragons Col. 3 installed as mods, Deadly dragons makes dragons harder, not easier. Is the dragon's level dictated by a Papyrus Script, and what could cause it to not run? I am level 77.

FMPhoenixHawk (talk) 23:52, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

Dragon rend worked, but not Bend Will shout[edit]

Skyrim SE Xbox One no mods.

Level 92, high elf Ultmer mage with many enchanted items, skills with 100 level, but not all perks.

The dragon when hit with Bend Will shout had the diagnostic message "Dragon resisted your voice" displayed in the top left hand corner of the screen. I did not have equipped any of the Miraak gear to have its effects, but these were in my inventory.

He could have been friendly since I don't think that he attacked me, but I ended up killing him anyway.

A legendary dragon was also flying around nearby him. The legendary dragon did respond to both dragon rend and to bend will shouts. I had just finished blind sighted quest and was coming out of the bronze water cave (or whatever it is called) that opens out onto that small partially frozen shallow lake. Once I was riding on the legendary dragon, I fast traveled back to Irkngthand, I saw that my horse had been killed by a bear still growling nearby the horse's corps. 216.58.27.151 07:14, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Because my horse was killed I reloaded a prior save then went to Irkngthand by a different route on foot without my horse. I encountered this same dragon prior to the "blind sighted" quest rather than afterward as related above, but didn't realize it was the same dragon.
I shouted at it with Bend Will shout, but this time the dragon reacted properly by asking me to climb aboard his back.
At the moment I cannot fathom what would make the difference from the prior case above other than there was not another dragon around and I had encountered him earlier in the daytime than the prior meeting, and I had not completed blind sighted mission? This time the dragon was unfriendly and was using frost breath against me. 216.58.27.151 09:06, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
