Valds debt useless quest?[edit]

Xbox original release version at level 40 and never having gone near Mercer's house before the quest, i went through the trouble of finding the quill for Maven Black-Briar in order to let Vlad live, but upon going to speak to him to tell him he was released from his debt, he was already hostile and attacked me instead of talking to me as described in this quest page...just me or is this a factor for anyone else? EaglesDerbyUK 20:13, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

This is mentioned on Vald's page. It should probably be added to the quest page aswell. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 20:25, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Vlad's Only Angry[edit]

So, for The Pursuit I used roof hopping to get in the house, after pickpocketing the key from Vlad (didn't get caught). At various times he was aware of me and hostile (due to all the shouting), but never attacked me, and I lost him by crouching before entering the house.

Previously, before working my way into the house, I followed the (Optional) talk to Vex, and ended up with the 'Talk to Maven' Misc Quest on my list. I completed The Pursuit without using it and wanted to clear it off, so I talked to Maven. She sent me to the lake, I found the Quill, brought it back, and she gave me the note/book* 'Vlad's Debt'. I want to give it to Vlad, but he only seems to be hostile. I've used Calm on him, and he'll switch to not-hostile, but he doesn't have any dialog menu options. Is this a limitation of Calm, or have I messed it all up by taking the key and finishing the Pursuit, I wonder?

I suppose I don't really care because there isn't actually a Quest entry for giving the book to Vlad, so it's fallen off my Misc section, and the book isn't a quest item, so I can drop it. I may just end up getting him killed via town guard. But it'd be nice to resolve it at least half-way the way it was supposed to be done.

(*aside: the note/book 'Vlad's Debt' appears as a redish-brown covered book in inventory, and opens as such (to one page), but when dropped it appears as a folded piece of paper a la recipes and other common short notes.) 12th 09:36, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

The quest is only available during the first part of The Pursuit. Once it is complete, all things related will disappear, unless you have picked up any of the items. And once you cross into the area guarded by Vlad around the house, he becomes hostile. You can only speak to him by leaving the garden and then before you try to speak to him again by the gate, you need to cast a Calm spell on him or he will turn hostile when you attempt to 'talk' to him. I successfully gave Vald the Free from Debt Note. The best thing to do is finish finding the Quill, then bring the note to him without opening the back gate. Do not go to the gate before finding the Quill and getting the note. (He will be hostile if you do) When bringing the note to him, wait by the gate and wait for him to walk over to the gate. Then talk to him, hand him the note and he will open the gate and leave.--141.157.184.133 23:40, 27 July 2012 (UTC)bepease2269

Where does he go?[edit]

I was wondering what happens to Vald after you free him from his debt. Does he end up anywhere or does he just disappear from the game? --141.157.184.133 23:42, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Acquiring the Quill early?[edit]

I recently created a new character and I happened to be swimming around Lake Honrich looking for fish for my hatchery, and I thought I'd grab the Quill early, since I'm in the middle of the Thieves' Guild questline anyway. I looked everywhere for the rowboat, which I have been to a few times before with other characters, but I can't find it. Is it possible that it doesn't show up until the quest is activated? --Negativeiamacapsicle (talk) 03:44, 16 September 2012 (GMT)

Yeah, it only appears when this quest is activated. I've tried before too but it doesn't show up before it. AyaHawkeye (talk) 15:14, 6 March 2013 (GMT)

Vald actually disappears from the game...[edit]

After successfully erasing Vald's debt with Maven and giving Vald his book/note stating this fact, I followed him to one of the gates of Riften whereupon he disappears from the game. — Unsigned comment by 174.52.127.52 (talk) at 00:39 on 3 June 2013

That is correct. He disappears from the game. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 01:12, 11 June 2013 (GMT)

Hostile Vald Bug[edit]

After a bit of experimentation, it seems that Vald goes hostile if you go to the wrong gate. If you go to the side gate (next to the Chapel of Mara), he always turns hostile - at least in the one save I have to test it with. If you go to the back gate, he comes over and is unfriendly but does not actually attack. Could other people test this and see if that's the answer to the problem? baratron (talk) 20:57, 12 June 2013 (GMT)

I see three gates. The back gate is owned by him as is the upper side gate (if you start above the temple steps/by its entrance), but the lower side gate (if you start under the temple steps) is completely unowned. I do not know if this is relevant. Vely►t►e 21:17, 12 June 2013 (GMT)
Yep, I ignored the upper side gate since I stood there for ages and he never seemed to see me. It's the lower side gate that makes him turn hostile (in that one save). baratron (talk) 22:38, 12 June 2013 (GMT)
Confirmed on Xbox 360. The gate that does not require a key to open does not turn Vald hostile. I am referring to the expert level locked gate. The two near the temple require a key and the lower one definitely turns Vald hostile. 68.200.221.151 00:57, 17 November 2013 (GMT)

No Glitch[edit]

I killed Vlad earlier in the game and was able to retrieve the quill, obtain the vlads debt note from Maven and it was not marked as an essential quest item nor did it add a quest entry to my journal. I was able to sell the paper to a merchant (for 0).

→I did this also. Once I gave the quill to Maven, the quest line disappeared and I just dropped the note right on the floor in front of her. --Janbrook4 (talk) 14:15, 16 January 2014 (GMT)

bug: talking to Maven to Locate the Quill not shown on map?[edit]

"Locate the Quill of Gemination under Lake Honrich" showed as a quest in my Journal, but if I pressed the key to show it on my map, no quest marker appeared. I went on to do lots of other things. Today (months later) I happened upon Maven in Riften and she had lots of new (bold) dialog about the Quill and its location, just as the Detailed Walkthrough says, that I definitely had never heard. After that there was still no quest marker on the map but I just swam out to the lake and looked around until I found the sunken boat.

It's probably intentional that the quest marker doesn't show while you're looking for Vald's boat – not much of a search if Skyrim shows its location :-) . But it seems until you finish talking to Maven and she tells you about Vald's boat, the quest marker should appear at her location, i.e. separate the "Talk to Maven about Vald" stage from "Locate the Quill". What might have happened is I had another quest going with Maven and I didn't go through all the dialog options available with her at the time, or maybe I had this quest turned off. If I hadn't bumped into Maven I would have eventually figured out to talk to her by reading UESP, thanks!

Miscellaneous quests can be a bit buggy like this if you have too many of them active, it starts picking at random which ones it will work for and which it will not. I'm pretty sure there's no marker for searching the lake, and as there is only one entry per miscellaneous quest in the log, there wouldn't be a marker because you don't have "Talk to Maven". Looking at the scripts, it should only complete that step once you have fully completed talking to Maven about the debt (the update is linked to the last dialogue screen). Did you happen to look for the boat before you talked to Maven "again"? Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 15:09, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for replying. I didn't intentionally look for Vald's boat before I unexpectedly saw the dialog items from Maven, though I must have swum around for the Goldenglow Estates quest. I have at least one other Miscellaneous Quest at the moment (Verulanus IIRC?) which doesn't show a map marker when I activate it, and some others with minor glitches that I overcame thanks to this site. -- Skierpage (talk) 21:57, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
