Vulnerability to Magic[edit]

Disembodied Potema is invulnerable to any form of Destructive Magic ( I tried all sorts of spells on her and no effect it all went through her ) — Unsigned comment by 24.87.43.180 (talk) at 09:32 on 24 November 2011

Potema's remain is vulnerable to Destruction Magic, but her form as pure ghost(when she calls draugrs) is not. — Unsigned comment by MagnusHelvetti (talkcontribs) at 00:56 on 3 December 2011

Quest will not initiate.[edit]

No sign of the courier long after completing "The Man Who Cried Wolf". How long does it take before this quest will trigger. I have been back and forth between Solitude and Whiterun many times and even waited for 24 hours at a time on several occasions. The courier won't show. — Unsigned comment by 96.255.133.245 (talk) at 20:18 on 27 November 2011

won't initiate for me too, no currier even when manually set to stage 10 Sanguin 16:12, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
The courier came only exactly after I leveled up! I tried everything, nothing worked (even with console) but as soon i leveled up (in whiterun) and waited an hour, the courier came. Though the quest only starts officially after you talked to firebeard about the letter, reading the letter itself doesn't initiate it. And the courier must have given it to you, pickpocketing the letter or additem won't trigger the speechoption with falk. --88.72.19.147 08:11, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Courier appears when you're at least level 10 and have leveled up after "The Man Who Cried Wolf" - I checked (after restarting). StTheo 03:24, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
Wont initate for me too - maybe because i´m lvl 53..
is there a way to start the quest with cheat commands? tried with setstage but cant figure it out. thanks ::::— Unsigned comment by 178.24.196.167 (talk) at 09:28 on 27 December 2011
I think this may be a bug. I leveled from 64 to 65 after completing "The Man Who Cried Wolf" and the courier is not showing up to start this quest. I tried both setstage at 0 and getstage for the quest and nothing happened. If any others with characters above the soft level cap of 50 can confirm the same problem I'll make an appropriate edit to the article. --DagmarH 00:37, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
The courier showed up for me after I leveled a second time. The first time I leveled it was on the same day I finished "The Man Who Cried Wolf" so perhaps you have to have at least a day go by and you have to level afterwards.--DagmarH 03:43, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

() Is there any way to use the console to initiate the quest (courier event) for characters who are already at level 81? I tried levelling up using the console (4 levels above 81 = 85) but still no courier. — Unsigned comment by 86.98.41.126 (talk) at 12:11 on 6 February 2012 (UTC)

You should be able to use the console to change your level and then level up so that the quest is started. This is just theory of course, however the console command to do this would be Player.setlevel value where value is the number of your desired level. Thuraya Salaris 12:11, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
You need to get a normal level up to trigger this quest. Using the advlevel on the console to increase your level doesn't work (setlevel probably doesn't work either, but I didn't test). If you are already level 81 and on the PC, you can use the setlevel command mentioned above to set your level to 1 (or up to around 25 if you don't want to get multiple level ups). Your experience is preserved, so at level 1, the leftover experience you have after getting to level 81 and maxing all skills is enough to level up a few times. If you don't want to keep the extra stats, save before you do this, count how many level ups you get, then use setav on health, stamina or magicka to reduce it by the corresponding amount. Don't use forceav or modav, or your stat will display a green/red number (I think, not sure. I know setav will definitely leave your stat looking legit). After that, just use setlevel again to set your level back to 81. You'll be missing that leftover experience, and I think there's no way to give you that experience back directly with the console. You'd need to decrease a skill then level the skill up again to give you experience.--201.1.31.88 17:29, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
The courier triggered after I leveled "second" time after I finished the man who cried wolf (Finished first part at lv57, and I am lv59 for now, takes years...). — Unsigned comment by Templarphoenix (talkcontribs) at 06:43 on 2 March 2012
Hi! My way to solve this:
  1. Type in console player.setlevel 35
  2. After you're being promt to level up don't level up - keep it that way
  3. Type in console resetquest MS06Start
  4. Type in console setstage MS06Start 250 — Unsigned comment by 89.178.211.56 (talk) at 02:18 on 9 March 2012
I don't think you need to resetquest MS06Start and setstage MS06Start 250.
You need to levelup in Solitude when you're above level 10. --Lampuiho 17:05, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
The quest isn't starting for me either. I did "The Man Who Cried Wolf" quite a while ago, leveled up several times since then (and at least two times in solitude), but the quest is not triggering. I am at level 69. Couriers do work since I can receive the word wall letters. Is there any way to kick-start the quest via console? (preferably from the beginning) Ytsejam91 19:56, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
I am having the same difficulty. I did the preliminary quest at least 25 levels ago and haven't gotten the letter for the next quest. I leveled up my alteration and illusion in solitude to level myself up from 51 to 52. Before doing that I did resetquest ms06start and setstage ms06start 250. No luck. A fix for this would be really nice...--Redwaller66 September 17th, 2013. — Unsigned comment by 98.124.25.86 (talk)
Since you seem to be on PC, try the Unofficial Patch, as the article says. It fixed the problem for me when USKP 1.3.1 came out. --Ytsejam91 (talk) 10:39, 1 October 2013 (GMT)

() The instructions given by Lampuiho are backwards. You need to levelup away from Solitude. Staying in Solitude forever prevents the letter from coming. --Morrolan (talk) 14:27, 1 October 2013 (GMT)

I had the same problems during my second playthrough using v1.9.32.0.8 and USKP 2.0.4a, in the first playthrough there were no problems with this quest by the way. I had done the previous quest many weeks (real-time) ago, but this quest didn't initiate. At first I thought it was because the way I've played with my character this time, but in the end I became very skeptical and after reading the bugs section of the quest page I knew there was something wrong. The approach that worked for me was:
  1. Entering an interior cell in an open settlement
  2. Typing resetquest ms06start (strangely it was already at stage 250 when I checked it with getstage ms06start)
  3. Typing setqueststage ms06start 250
  4. Going outside (the quest stage of ms06 was immediately set to 5, setting it manually didn't work since it always remained at 0 while inside)
  5. Typing setqueststage ms06 10 to speed up the delivery
  6. Going inside again
When I went outside again the courier was already there waiting to deliver the letter.--PLRDLF (talk) 09:02, 27 August 2014 (GMT)
This also happened to me on PS3. Was ready to and wanted to level up in Destruction so Solitude seemed perfect. I waited a full day there and no courier. Found this page, backed up to the save when I was leaving Heljarchen, leveled in Windhelm instead and immediately upon leaving the castle was approached by the courier. Thanks so much!! — Unsigned comment by Crusador (talkcontribs) at 18:32 on 20 January 2017 (UTC)

() I solved the problem by temporary disabling the Unofficial Patch, then level up out of Solitude, like at Dragon Bridge or overworld. The courier then comes up on cities and villages as usual, but again not at Solitude. — Unsigned comment by 93.34.225.41 (talk) at 11:04 on 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Crash to desktop bug[edit]

I found a constant crash to desktop bug, during the potema boss fight, as soon as you beat the army of undead she summons a ball of light that travels to the door. As soon as it reaches the door my game crashes out 100% repeatable bug. Reloaded the game multiple times with different settings. Disabled all mods, tried windowed mode, tried lowest graphics settings, verified cache etc. Game just crashes when she hits the door. Doesn't seem to be any fix for this, bit of a gamebreaker. Running Skyrim 1.3. Anyone found a fix for this? — Unsigned comment by 77.100.66.23 (talk) at 12:04 on 11 December 2011

Fixed: Queen uses Yarl03 clothing, any mods that alter the mesh of this clothing will crash the game when she tries to spawn. — Unsigned comment by 77.100.66.23 (talk) at 21:52 on 19 December 2011
Confirmed - bug still present in v1.4.20 - would NEVER have thought to remove the fine clothing mod - thanks a million - and yes please add to the bug section -- stuwade 86.171.10.111 19:29, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Just thought I'd mention that I get the same problem. I'll try removing the relevant clothing replacer and see if that fixes it. Two questions remain: First, why does modifying this mesh cause a CTD on this quest? Second, is it worth mentioning in the 'Bugs' section? --Gaebrial 07:33, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
CONFIRMED (again) - I experienced the same CTD problem. I removed the yarlclothes03 directory (\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data\meshes\clothes\yarlclothes03) and placed it on my desktop, then reloaded the game and finished the quest without any CTD, then moved the directory back to its original location. () This bug has been removed from the article, and will continue to be removed from the article, because at UESPWiki, we do not document bugs that are the result of installing 3rd-party mods. The reason for this is that there are a huge number of these mods, and more coming out each day, and trying to document each and every time that they conflict with official game code would result in incredibly long Bugs sections in the articles. --Xyzzy Talk 21:47, 3 March 2014 (GMT)

Why in the world would you want to remove something like "mods that modify Yarl03 clothing may make the game crash" from the bugs section. That would save a lot of people a lot of problems. I'm going to add it to the main page again and trust you've gained some perspective during the last few years.— Unsigned comment by 69.91.86.67 (talk) at 05:18 on 7 January 2017
I have to agree, here. You don't have to track a bunch of mods on the wiki, all you need to say in the bugs section is "Any modification of yarlclothes03 may cause a CTD when Potema and/or Elesif spawns."174.28.86.89 03:50, 7 October 2019 (GMT)

Returning to Falk first/ Not returning Potema's remains[edit]

I was able to return to Falk and recieve the gold and SoS without giving Potema's remains to Steyr after defeating her. The quest is still active with the proper objective still needing completion. Is there any downside if I just keep her remains? — Unsigned comment by 75.50.119.62 (talk) at 01:12 on 23 December 2011

By not completing the quest, you can never buy a house a solitude. by not being able to buy a house in Solitude, you will never be able to find all 24 stones of Barenziah on xbox or ps3 (PC you can just console code one up), as one of them is in the house that you can buy in Solitude. 99.229.81.49YLCC23 22:29, 2 January 2013
That's not really true. There is at least one key that, without a unofficial patch, opens one of the back doors of the house in solitude, meaning on 360 and ps3 you can still complete the barenziah quest. Jeancey (talk) 22:34, 2 January 2013 (GMT)
Where would this key be exactly? Because I need it so that I can complete the barenziah quest on 360 — Unsigned comment by 99.229.81.49 (talk) at 22:51 on 2 January 2013
Pickpocket the Key to Solitude Fletcher from Fihada or Jawanan. — ABCface 23:00, 2 January 2013 (GMT)
Even if you don't complete the quest, Elisif should ask you about her favor. I remember with one of my character, I used the Oghma Infinium glitch to reach level 81, so I never got the letter from Falk to start the quest and despite that I have my manor in Solitude. Respawning Potema[edit]

Is it possible that her respawning has something to do with who killed her or how? After "having killed" her roughly ten times via my usual cowardly way (have gimped my fighting abilities so my technique is more like "sneak, summon Dremora Lord, Invisibility, stay out of fight which Dremora Lord and Mjoll will do for me". After that I decided to chime in, killing her with destruction spells also caused respawning, but when I was finally able to connect with my weapon (ebony warhammer) she said goodbye. --Ulkomaalainen 09:00, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Reanimating the draugr[edit]

I've updated the page. I found it very useful to reanimate the draugr in the small room before the big fight. Potema got one to herself, but my 3 or 4 helped me beat it down. They then came down to the main fight with me. Sniping from the doorway proved successful, leaving a load of dead draugr which I then reanimated. By the time Potema retreated into the far room, there was only a Deathlord left for her (which I could do nothing with, and she didn't either, so maybe it was beyond her capabilities as well), and I had a wight to help me and distract her attention while I blasted at her with fire. She was already down to less than half health by the time she disposed of the wight and turned her attention to me. But the main advantage, I think, was that reanimation only works once on a corpse, so anything I reanimated was unavailable to Potema. Peterguard 01:05, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Cleared Catacombs before initiating quest[edit]

Okay, so I was completing the Dark Brotherhood quest 'Bound Until Death'. Though I'd never been to Solitude before, I had a hold-bounty from killing some imperial guards - so sue me. It was so perfect: I stabbed Vittoria Vici right as she finished her speech, then jumped from the balcony John Wilkes Booth-style, and ran straight into the Temple of the Divines for cover. I ran straight through the whole thing - stabbing Silana Petreia caused her to run and unlock the entrance to the catacombs. I kept on going, killing her and continuing on through Refuge and Sanctum, before finally coming to Potema. I did not find her remains on her after I killed her - this may be because I have never even met Falk Firebeard, much less initiated 'The Man Who Cried Wolf'. I have probably messed up this quest permanently, but I will soon find out for sure. Maybe I can still talk to him and initiate the quest, and complete it somehow? Probably not. 98.240.146.10 04:59, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

How to get the Courier if you are already maxed out[edit]

I found a working solution for the PC after solving the quest "The Man Who Cried Wolf" while beeing maxed out.

1. Open up you console 2. Type player.setav (Skill) 0 3. Type AdvSkill (Skill) 1000000 4. Level up at least on level 5. Keep at least on LevelUp in Waiting 6. Fasttravel between Citys you know a courier has spawned before.

Note that this WILL Grant you extra Perks, Levels and Statpoints. You can get rid of them with some console codes. player.setav health xxx player.setav level xx removeperk xxxx

It also helps if you have not all that much Misc Quest in your Journal. Sometime that prevents quest from beeing triggerd or questlines in dialougs to appear. My courier spawned in Whiterun. I did it with Version 1.5.24 — Unsigned comment by 84.137.206.146 (talk) on 7 April 2012

Remains[edit]

I've found that with a maxed sneak skill and a few perks, I was able to sneak up to Potema's side and nick her skull without alerting her to my presence. I cleaned out the chest and left through the back door before deciding that it would be mean to leave her sitting there, and proceeded to alert her to my presence and kill her with a bound bow. She did not respawn after that kill (I don't know if the method of killing her or possessing her remains had anything to do with that - thought it bore mentioning since there was speculation regarding what causes her to respawn above). Since this is pretty clearly not the way the player is intended to acquire her remains, I don't know that it rates being on the main page, but I thought it was worth mentioning here.MuddlingThrough 20:41, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Bug?[edit]

When go talk to Styr he has no dialogue for the quest. — Unsigned comment by Grelaria (talkcontribs) at 07:19 on 16 August 2012

Legend of Krately House in the boss chest[edit]

The chest next to Potema's throne is a TreasVampireChestBoss container with leveled items. However, in the MS06 Quest Aliases, one SkillSneak4 book (= Legend of Krately House) is forced into the chest. I've also checked it in-game, so I'm going to remove the vn tag for the skill book. The book is always in the chest. --Holomay 17:15, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Can't Finish the quest[edit]

I've killed Potema & given her remains to Styr, but the game won't let me talk to Falk Firebeard to finish off the quest anymore. When I went to go talk to Falk, a bunch of guards came to arrest me. Could this be why I'm unable to finish the quest? — Unsigned comment by 99.229.81.49 (talk) at 22:18 on 2 January 2013

If you get rid of your bounty, you can probably complete the quest. Jeancey (talk) 22:19, 2 January 2013 (GMT)
I did that but I still can't complete the quest. The dialogue option just isn't available with Falk anymore 99.229.81.49 22:24, 2 January 2013 (GMT)YLCC23

Killed Potema but can't leave[edit]

I can't leave because one of the three rotating portals is stuck, not rotating. So there's no way out. Do I have to go the other way and jump off the cliff? I've done this quest before with no problems. Is there something I can do to reactivate the portal? I've tried quitting the game and reloading and leaving to the previous section (Potema's refuge) and coming back but the portal is still stuck.

So, you know, what the heck?!

Potema's Skull may not be "active"[edit]

As I write this the main page says this bug is not verified. Well, I had this issue - everything went smoothly except I could not pick up Potemas skull after defeating her minions and her Ghostly Remains. I could kick the skull down the hall and shoot it full of arrows though :) Quiting and reloading was no help, neither was going back to a save well before entering Potemas Sanctum. I have 29 mods enabled, would not surprise me if one of them is responsible, but I skipped testing for now and worked around the issue using setstage commands.

208.126.68.32 23:55, 29 May 2013 (GMT)

Glad you were able to use setstage commands to work around the issue, but the bug should only be verified on the page without the possibility of mods affecting it. — ABCface 16:11, 10 June 2013 (GMT)
I had the same issue but was able to fix it without using set stage commands. After the final battle with the ghostly potema I was unable to retrieve the remains. To fix this I left the cave( via the exit behind her chair ) and ignored the apparent trap after ( no idea if that affected anything or not ). Once I left, I re-entered and used sneak when re-entering the room with the chair ( the room in which potema spawns drauger was active again at this point ). Without alerting potema to my presence I was able to collect the remains with no trouble whatsoever ( the only oddity was that now the skull was placed on the back area of the chair as opposed to on the seat ). I was able to leave after with no trouble and the quest proceeded and ended as normal ( with no misplaced characters doing misplaced things ). I know this post is old, but I hope this is helpful to anyone else who comes across this glitch. — Unsigned comment by 76.14.220.133 (talk) at 04:22 on 19 February 2014‎

Possible PS3 solution for lack of courier[edit]

I suggest some of you guys check your inventory for the original letter not the second one. I never once encountered a courier, but I went and looked at "Letter from Falk Fire Beard" assuming it to be the original, I found that the text in the letter had been updated to the new letter. Have a look and see if that works. I did all the rest, leveling up and so on. No couriers.99.241.145.23 18:53, 13 September 2013 (GMT)

Inaccuracies in Defeating Potema section[edit]

If you go through this with a low-level character, you don't get frost atronachs; actually I think those are summoned by Draugr Scourges, not raised by Potema. Also there's a minimum level to get the battle with Potema's remains, if you have a low-level character then it doesn't manifest at all, you just take the skull.

I don't know what the level cutoffs are. --Morrolan (talk) 21:34, 17 September 2013 (GMT)

Level 14 is high enough to get the battle with Potema's remains. So I must have been very close to the minimum level on the previous playthrough when I didn't meet it. --Morrolan (talk) 02:09, 25 September 2013 (GMT)

Potema not 'talking' to me upon entering the Catacombs.[edit]

At the 'gate' section, where Potema is supposed to talk to the character before lowering the bars, is simply not activating. I enter the area, but nothing. She does not talk to me, the bars do no lower, rendering the rest of the quest simply inaccessible.

Is there a console command of some kind to force this brief section to activate? — Unsigned comment by 68.196.238.225 (talk) at 03:13 on 7 November 2013‎

I'm having this issue as well. Any solution?

It bugged for me after I had a CTD a bit after the bars lowered. Now I did manage to fix it with FallrimTools ReSaver but I don't know if it'll work for others because I'm pretty sure the CTD caused it. I guess it's worth posting since it might help. So I loaded up my save in ReSaver and in the top left textbox typed in 00096d83. In the Script Instances there should be a default2StateActivator: *00096d83. Select it and in the data tab on the right set the USLEEP_HasAlreadyLoaded to false (simply click on the 'BOOLEAN:true' and set it to false). I'm not sure if this part is necessary but I also deleted these Script Instances since they were also connected to the same quest stage: 00096d7c, 00096d80, 00096d86, 00096d89, 00096d8d. The process is similar just search the ID in the textbox, right click on the Instance and select Delete. After that save the file under a different name, load it ingame and see if it's fixed. -86.58.32.211 23:21, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Broken quest marker[edit]

The quest marker is broken and once you're in Solitude Temple the spell Clairvoyance will point to a wrong location outside. Hexaae (talk) 17:20, 7 November 2013 (GMT)

I verified this each time I've done a play through. You have to stay on the main floor, travel almost up to the shrines, then make a left turn to head across, then a right hand turn toward the front of the temple. A set of stairs to the temple's basement levels can be found. This bug should be added to the listing and I'm surprised that it has not already been done years ago. 198.91.176.251 16:37, 8 December 2019 (GMT)

Quest won't start after receiving the letter[edit]

I've got the letter from courier, but quest didn't start when I read it. I went to Falk and he told me to talk to Styrr. Styrr lacks quest dialogue option. I used "getstage" command and it is set to 10. (178.252.126.70 01:59, 1 December 2013 (GMT))

Instead of using 'getstage', 'try setstage MS06 10'. Then open and read the letter, and follow up by talking to Falk. When I did this, the quest continued from there as normal (Styrr had the dialogue available). — Unsigned comment by ‎82.132.229.133 (talk) at 20:57 on 23 December 2013

Refuge - 3 Revolving gates experience Xbox[edit]

Interesting experience to corroborate/confirm. (Xbox 360) Potema’s Refuge at the 3 doors/levers.

Known: throwing all levers to open all gates seems to make them slowly slide down again over time, blocking an exit.

Experience: Locking open the first and third gates, and leaving the second revolving counter-clockwise (lever thrown to the right) to simply walk through the passage seems to 1.) either keep the gates from sliding closed altogether, or 2.) makes them cycle slowly down AND back up again , making future exit/backtrack possible.

I’m not sure if its just the 1 & 3 closed, 2 open combo, or if they cycle up and down regardless. But with this combo I have found that each time I backtrack, the gates are always still up and passable. --Beezer1029 18:18, 11 January 2014 (GMT)

Make sure that you have installed the latest Official Skyrim Patch, because version 1.9 allows you to exceed level 81. Then all you have to do is gain one level and the courier should eventually show up. --Xyzzy Talk 14:41, 25 February 2014 (GMT)

Nothing spawns after first round of Inner Council[edit]

In the room with the electrically glowing, floating Potema, after killing the first three Draugr, nothing else happens. She continues to cut loose with the shock stream, but no other Draugr come out, she doesn't seem affected by any spells, and there is no way to activate the door to the remains. — Unsigned comment by Dogfood (talkcontribs) at 15:54 on 8 March 2014 (GMT)

how i fixed the bug of potema's skull not being active.[edit]

i encountred this bug on xbox 360. i looted potema's ghastly remains but could not pick up the skull. i uesd the shout power "unrelenting force" on the skull. i shouted the skull out of potema's throne on which the skull was seated. after that it became active and i was able to pick it up. — Unsigned comment by 109.64.152.116 (talk) at 21:37 on 22 May 2014 (GMT)

reanimate undead[edit]

the spell obtained from Styrr is 'Turn Undead' which makes undead flee, this DOES NOT reanimate. Also depending on your level when entering the catacombs, encountered draugr may be :too powerful for this spell anyway. The statement about reanimating draugr should be removed from the main page141.0.8.158 01:57, 6 November 2014 (GMT)

Quest not initiating after courier turns up[edit]

Finished prerequisite quest, courier arrives, hand over letter, read it, off to talk to Falk, he has the right conversation markers and tells me about it but no quest marker ever pops up and Styrr doesn't say anything about it when I go find him. PS3, DLC all on if it makes a difference. FlyingMeeces (talk) 16:20, 4 March 2015 (GMT)

Finally got the quest to 'fire' after talking to Falk about 6 times. Weird. FlyingMeeces (talk) 16:23, 4 March 2015 (GMT)
Had you activated one of Falk's other quests possibly? They are
The Man Who Cried Wolf: Investigate reports of strange happenings in Wolfskull Cave.
Delivery: Deliver a bottle of Rum to Falk Firebeard.
The Mind of Madness: Gain access to and solve the mystery of the Pelagius Wing.
Sometimes quest dialogue competes and causes bugs. --Morrolan (talk) 04:21, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
