Two Staffs[edit]

Okay so I just killed 'Morekei' and searched his remains... I found TWO Staffs of Magnus, and from what I have read, I cannot find any other occurrences of this. One is a Quest item which I cannot drop and the other is not a quest item and I can drop it just fine. Anyone have any insight on this?? -SeaReut — Unsigned comment by 24.164.170.17 (talk) at 06:04 on 18 November 2011

Definitely a bug, I only got one ;) Predator106 20:50, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
It just happened to me... Stoked (: - Drew 00:28, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I got two staffs as well, my cousin was soo jealous! Yeah, its a glitch. know at least three other people who had the same thing happen to them. (izz71.55.247.35 19:24, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
I accidentally kicked the staff away from his ash pile after frying him and then picked up one staff from the ash pile and the other from where the staff was kicked to. It's a fun staff to dual wield. --174.6.51.17 12:49, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

what lvl should i be to do this quest?[edit]

im lvl 19 now and its very hard for me to kill him is it normal? — Unsigned comment by 67.201.180.76 (talk) at 16:55 on 25 November 2011

Read the wiki, takes a lot of arrows to kill him, I was level 31, 62 sneak with 3x archer perk, and it still took 10-15 arrows with a Glass Bow with I think 36 HP and 12 fire enchantment including the 3x archer perk. I was surprised, hardest boss yet for me. So no I think you're OK you just have to be patient and take your time. 75.70.45.40 02:38, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
I was level 20, it was hard but I managed. I killed one of the mages off, and placed my fellower behind the other, so that he could care of him. Now, most important: I had the Dual Casting and Impact perks. In the watchtower just before the chamber, there was a mana regeneration potion (+100% for 300 secs) which came handy. And I had the "Apprentice" stone ability. With all of that, I was able to dual cast Firebolt so often I could kill him without him getting off one of his deadly lightnings. Be sure to have some mana potions, that is the most important thing. At first, the stupid holomage managed to kill me all the time, until I had my follower take care of him. Be sure to get rid of the mage first before engaging the dragonpriest. — Unsigned comment by 188.110.140.119 (talk) at 23:55 on 2 January 2012
I've done the quest with a lvl 8-9 Khajiit mage, although it was brain-rackingly difficult... It seems pure mages are very difficult characters to use, even on novice for the lack of armour, or the related perks. I would recommend about level 20, and an amateur skill in 1h -- AcE x EPiiCzZ 14:16, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

doubtful walkthrough[edit]

considering i finished the quest before this at level 17, i doubt that boss is level 49-50 automatically. — Unsigned comment by 222.78.98.229 (talk) at 08:12 on 6 December 2011

Glitch[edit]

When I went in to fight Morokei, he was unkillable, and floated around making abortive magicky noises but not actually attacking me. There was no dialogue sequence with the thrall mages. It was impossible to use setstage to advance the quest (even in autosaves ~20 minutes back). The kill console command wouldn't kill Morokei, although it could kill both of his thralls. The quest showed "Find the Staff of Magnus" as the active stage.

The workaround is to use the "killall" command in the console to kill Morokei. The quest will advance directly to "retrieve the staff of magnus." Pez 06:55, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

I've just experienced this on the PS3 with the legendary edition. Upon entering Morokei's chamber, I immediately noticed the two mages were not casting their beams on Morokei. I killed the mages first anyways, thinking it was merely a graphics glitch. After killing them, Morokei remained invincible and blue, I was unable to kill him.
Reloading the save from immediately before entering Morokei's chamber yeilded the same results. I had to reload the auto save at the entrance to the Tribune and do the whole area again. Upon entering Morokei's chamber the third time, everything was back to normal. The mages were casting their beams on Morokei, and he had his barrier up. Killing the mages made him killable as normal and I was able to complete the quest normally without consol commands.
I hope this helps other consol players. 24.114.94.119 15:16, 30 January 2014 (GMT)

Not Starting[edit]

So, I just started and finished Containment seemingly without any issues... except The Staff of Magnus won't start. Reloading a save from just before talking to Savos didn't work. Using the setstage command for MG07 doesn't do anything, but setstage MG08 0 does - although I don't want to skip this quest entirely. Tested on PC, running Simple Borderless Window, with and without SKSE, patches 1.1 and 1.3. 112.201.196.17 14:27, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

I am having this problem too, did you ever find a proper fix, I don't want to play around with set stage incase it causes future problems. — Unsigned comment by 94.171.127.122 (talk) at 17:01 on 13 April 2012

Morokei's Transcript[edit]

I got bored and decided to write down what he says to you as you travel through the dungeon. • "Wo meyz wah dii vul julnaar?" (Who comes to -- dark -- ?) • "Nivah riin muz fent siiv nid aaz het." (Cowardly men shall find no mercy here.) • "You do not answer, must I use this guttural language of yours?" • "Have you returned Aren, my old friend?" • "Do you seek to finish that which you could not?" • "You only face failure once more." • "You, you are not Aren are you. Has he sent you in his place?" • "Did he warn you that, your own power would be your undoing? That it would only serve to strengthen me?" • "Come, face your end." — Unsigned comment by 220.244.42.175 (talk) at 12:54 on 20 December 2011

Thanks for the translation! "vul julnaar" may be the old name for that place (Bromjunaar Sanctuary?). After "Come, face your end.", I saw couple more shout animations (also my mp reduced), but no words. Glitch or maybe it was just his breath? (ZekunD 09:36, 29 December 2011 (UTC))
I got the shout animations with no words a couple times as well with the same affect, i think it was intentional.(izz71.55.247.35 19:39, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
The first statement "Wo meyz wah dii vul junaar?" directly translates to "Who come to mine dark kingdom?". 'Meyz' means 'come', as in 'become' - implying a state of transition. Contextually, that transition of state is that of entering. I have not found any Dovah word for 'enter'. 'Junaar' means 'kingdom' or 'kingship'. Morokei is a high ranking dragon priest, not a king - so I think the word 'domain' is more fitting. The Skyrim:Morokei (creature) page currently mentions 'Bromjunaar' meaning 'Northern Kingdom', but the word 'brom' is not spoken here. I would interpret this first phrase as "Who enters my dark domain?".
The second statement "Nivahriin muz fent siiv nid aaz het." directly translates to "Cowardly men shall find no mercy here". I don't think this requires any interpretation.
As for the wordless shout mentioned above, I'm pretty sure this is intentional. It'd it cool if there was the sound of him inhaling/exhaling associated with it, but it's not there. I didn't make this game. --24.18.234.196 02:25, 17 August 2013 (GMT)

Glitch: Not getting spotted[edit]

Hi, so I followed the guide insofar as I killed the two mages with the Drainspell bow. As the Dragon Priest hadn't spotted me yet, I thought I'd use the bow until he did. Now here's the problem: My sneak eye thingy was open, there was battle music, but all he did was hover from left to right without doing anything. I eventually killed him with about 70 arrows, but it just seems a bit glitchy and I feel cheated out of my epic battle. Can any user confirm? Experiences? — Unsigned comment by 93.97.77.104 (talk) at 14:11 on 21 December 2011

I have found that some dagon priests don't attack my player either. It is probably a glitch that will eventually get fixed at some point.RIM 12:08, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
I also experienced this bug. Upon entering the hall the combat scripts seem not to have activated correctly for the enthralled mages and Morokei. I was able to take out the mages at a distance with firebolts and they hardly reacted, Morokei was then very passive, he did summon a storm atronach but did not use the staff to drain my magicka so I was able dispatch him easily. I also received two copies of the staff. This is on Skyrim Legendary 1.9 with the latest unoffical patch --Drbob (talk) 00:32, 17 February 2014 (GMT)

Story[edit]

I agree with the story on Savos Aren page that he sacrificed his two friends to trap the dragon priest and sealed the cave in the past by removing the Torc. The walkthrough needs correction on 2 enthralled mages protecting the boss and Savos sealing the cave at the end of quest. (ZekunD 11:55, 29 December 2011 (UTC))

Edited Frost Dragon Tip: Dragon shouts can be used though gate[edit]

Just wanted to explain my edit, as per wiki guidelines:

I added that Dragon Shouts can be used through the gate, even when closed. This allows a player to pick off the skeletons accompanying the dragon before awakening the dragon, in addition to killing the dragon from relative safety. It works most of the time, but enemies have to get close to the gate, and you have to aim between the bars (line of sight). Since shouting and using magic makes enemies aware of your presence, this is a slow, but effective "tip." I felt this was okay to add, since there was already a tip similar to this on the page. --Amsuko 20:32, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Possible changes[edit]

Wiki says bring extra potions. During my run he drained my mana completely about 10 times. You can do the math on the potions. Bringing extra potions isn't a good option unless you have an excess of carry capacity. Casters without free to cast in destruction enchantments should switch to a staff.

Also walkthrough omits multiple spellbooks you can pick up including telekinesis in the first (entrance) chamber and steadfast ward in a room before the hall of spell towers. 75.80.97.155 05:41, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

As far as possible changes, can we omit the "second entrance" option from the article as there are two barred doors from the hatch to the boss room? This makes it an unlikely entry point unless you've already been through once. 98.165.130.46 17:40, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Missing ghosts[edit]

On PlayStation Apparently I have run into a non-documented bug with this quest. At the beginning of the quest I had the correct number of apparitions spawned. However, on the second encounter two of the ghostly apprentices were already missing, and on further encounters only the ghost of Savos Aren appeared. He continued talking and, in an occasion, he even replied to something another apprentice must have been scripted to say, hence confirming this as a bug.

The quest proceeded normally even under these circumstances, though. — Unsigned comment by 68.7.147.236 (talk) at 08:00 on 6 January 2012

There are meant to be less ghosts each time, as they have all died throughout the dungeon. But I do recall him talking before going the final room and it sounded like someone else replied but no one was in sight. He is meant to be on his own at the end as everyone else has died. — Unsigned comment by Rukaven (talkcontribs) at 09:00 on 9 January 2012
I have also run into this issue on PS3. The second to last apparition of the ghosts only showed one of them, Who was obviously having a conversation which involved pauses, in which I assume other ghosts should have talked, followed by replies by the ghost that actually appeared. — Unsigned comment by 108.12.207.73 (talk) at 06:52 on 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Lol, are these people not paying attention? If you listen to the dialogue you will know the mages are getting killed off as they progress through Labryinthia. Before the last room, three mages go in and one comes out, and when you enter two mages are in the room...hmmm. Later Savros apologises, he is talking to the two mages he left behind...it's called exposition! The only reason the dialogue has pauses in it is because it was probably recorded in different sections, or Beth thought that by adding some pauses the player could hear what he was saying properly. So no...not a bug, just poor media literacy on the players part. — Unsigned comment by 124.148.254.133 (talk) at 00:13 on 31 August 2012
I think the original post was about subsequent games, not repeating the quest, which could only be done on PC (and they indicated PS3). SilencerSpeak 01:31, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
I don't think people replying to this post understand what is going on with this glitch. I too have experienced what is happening with it, on the 360, as well as a few friends of mine. After the first encounter with the ghosts, they're supposed to "meet up" again in the room after the skeletal dragon, minus one of the initiates, who was killed off by the dragon. However, only Savos Aren was visible and verbal, whereas all the other ghosts seem to have disappeared completely. This happened on the subsequent encounters with the ghosts, only Savos was visible and verbal. I know they become killed off one by one, but not 5 at the same time. Perhaps this clears up any confusion anyone is having with this issue. -Light-in-His-Eyes (talk) 16:21, 10 February 2013 (GMT)
Can also confirm the last ghostly scene is missing Hafnar and Atmah. --Lmstearn (talk) 13:53, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Glitch even after quest line completion[edit]

I revisited Labyrinthian some time after finishing all college quests, to see if I can get another drainspell bow. I didn't see any enemy respawn yet. But I saw the dragon priest body whole (not just empty shell) and on his body, there was another copy of staff of magnus.(ZekunD 12:36, 7 January 2012 (UTC))

One of the bugs mentions it is possible to obtain two staffs. I presume that's what happened to you too. Wolok gro-Barok 12:50, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
I guess so, although I got only 1 staff during the quest. And I guess I can safely keep 2 staves of magnus this time without worrying about glitching the college quests since I already finished them all. Both staves can be stored, dropped, dual-wielded (PS3). (ZekunD 13:04, 7 January 2012 (UTC))

Possibly Random Spell tome ?[edit]

I just started the quest and I'm at lvl 50. ( decided to join the guild quite late :P). In the first room with all the dead skeletons lying around, the walkthrough says that there is a Ironflesh spell tome on the altar but I got a Detect Life spell tome. Maybe its randomly generated. I know its not important but I thought I'll just mention it here. — Unsigned comment by 178.152.100.73 (talk) at 07:42 on 8 January 2012

No you're right. The page should be changed. I got Telekinesis Spell Tome in the first room. I am level 36. Rukaven 07:56, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Also it seems to be a random Alteration Spell Tome. Not just any spell tome Rukaven 08:57, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Spectral Zombie Draugr[edit]

An intresting note is that the Spectral Draugr can be reanimated. This makes them triple undead, one draugr, two spectral, three zombie. I think it is an intresting side note. --Zar Pof 06:40, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Tip to easily defeat Morokei[edit]

I just wanted to confirm (atleast in my experience) the information in the guide that if you use close quarters combat against Morokei he can be easily defeated. After the second mage is defeated simply sprint straight up to Morokei and attack him with a close range weapon. Instead of fighting back he will continuously back up as if he is trying to get to long range and use a spell. I have tried this three times on three seperate characters now and it has worked each time.

Note: Each time I have done this I defeated the mage on the higher platform second, then jumped down and attack Morokei very quickly. It is possible that the quickness of engaging him is part of what throws him off. The5thdarklord 02:28, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Malachite Ore in Tribune Pool?[edit]

The article mentions a Gold Ore in the pool at the beginning of the Tribune section. I also found two Malachite Ore in that pool. Can anyone confirm this? --198.228.220.250 05:23, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

I didnt even find any gold, just mala. (izz71.55.247.35 19:38, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
There are 4 pieces of Malachite. You can't pick them all up at first but you can hit them around with a weapon until you can! — Unsigned comment by Natty (talkcontribs) at 13:00 on 10 July 2012
Yeah, wondering if this is a bug with having to be underwater to interact with objects underwater, (unless specified, like fish, which I think can be harvested from above water?). I knocked the ore about until I could target it. — Unsigned comment by 124.148.254.133 (talk) at 21:58 on 30 August 2012

Another Bug?[edit]

The enthralled wizards in the fight with Morokei didn't engage me. I walked up to them and talked to them after entering the room. They stopped with the spell they were doing and yelled about how they were going to kill me, but they didn't attack. The one on the lower level attacked eventually when I walked away, but the one on the higher level just stood there while I killed Morokei. I can walk up and try to talk to him, but he still won't become aggressive. — Unsigned comment by 98.200.136.193 (talk) at 23:25 on 19 January 2012

I can confirm this but it's a little different. The Enthralled Wizard furthest from the chamber entrance stopped attacking me during the fight with Marokei. And after I killed Morokei, she is standing in the middle of the room and it says "Talk to Enthralled Wizard", but she is unresponsive. The way my game ended up like this might have something to do with how I fought in this battle. I shot the first wizard and killed him. Then I shot the second one which lets Morokei free, but SHE only ran about halfway to me and stopped under the arch. To kill Morokei, I ran outside the door, and Morokei never came out and when I went back in he just floated around and let me kill him without attacking me (I even got pretty close to him). THEN, after collecting the staff, the last Enthralled wizard was standing under the archway and was non-combative. So I guess I'm saying not only was it a girl when the page says they are both male, but a bug/glitch exists where if you don't kill them, or at least the second one (furthest from the entrance), she CAN become non-hostile and stand where she was when Morokei dies. Maybe someone can try to replicate this a third time and add it under notes or something. A "good" character might be able to kill Marokei but let the arch-mage's old friends be free from holding Marokei in that shield for eternity. =) I'll go back in soon and check to see if she's still there. I'm on PC. --71.94.53.49 04:41, 6 October 2014 (GMT)

Savos and the ghosts[edit]

When i got to Labarynthian a Dragon attaked me, so i ran for the door. the dragon landed and breathed fire on me. but four of the ghosts were in the way, including savos. they died and no other ghosts aoppeared in the dungeon after that. i'm assuming that was unscripted. but will this affect what happens at all? — Unsigned comment by 70.89.180.125 (talk) at 00:53 on 23 January 2012

"There are more inside" said Savos before entering. He was mentioning about two enthralled wizards. They are not one of six ghosts. here reference footage http://youtu.be/yOx-f7uRn10?t=27m50s where all four ghost are standing still, unaffected during the fight with Morokei.— Unsigned comment by 117.204.170.90 (talk) at 02:20 on 25 March 2013

Skipping Estormo[edit]

I went the long way through the dungeon because the quest markers told me to, and I missed Estormo completely. The quest finished correctly and I could finish the next quest as well with no issues. -IVI4tt — Unsigned comment by 82.19.4.94 (talk) at 21:58 on 27 January 2012

How can you just went the way back? You should be blocked just outside the door of Labyrinthian, Tribune. "tcl" or similar?FelixH 19:51, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
I recall taking the long way back too. There was nothing blocking my way as far as I know -- the gate that closes behind you once you enter the chamber with the skeletal dragon can be reopened with a chain hanging close to it. I never encountered Estermo. Narzul 16:38, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
This is true as i didn't know about a short way through and backtracked and never encountered Estormo. The questline just procceded normaly (PS3) Simsas999 15:41, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
I can confirm this, went back to pick up some loot and decided to take the long way. Neither Estormo nor the apparition appeared, and the quest was not stuck. -Kat — Unsigned comment by 89.245.228.69 (talk) at 19:47 on 9 April 2012
Another Confirmation - didn't know there was a short way back, and if it wasn't mentioned on this page, I'd never even have known that there was more after Morokei. Quest proceeded without issues, though. -Hafer — Unsigned comment by 77.20.35.108 (talk) at 05:01 on 7 May 2012
Another Confirmation but slightly different - It can be confirmed that you do not need to fight Estermo period. I took the short way back met with him in which he basically said you have trouble. I sheathed my weapons basically yielding and he didn't bother attacking. He accepted the yield. I then exited via the short exit. This shows that while his appearance and all is scripted if you take the back way it doesn't matter whether or not you either engage him or even kill him. You do not have to fight him period. Darkcaptain3 17:41, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Borrowed magicka[edit]

It seems that Marokei has magicka taken from you and little more if any. He says that you'll be defeated by your own strength. Doing this quest at very low level I did not have weapons to kill him easily. So I just shouted and ran away, dodging his sparks. It was very slow but in the end he just had not anything left and I was free to do whatever I wanted. This assumption may be checked if you just deplete yourself before each of the doors. --93.73.19.163 08:57, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Biased[edit]

This page seems to be written by the disciple of the school of destruction. There is a lot of suggestions about the choice of spells. My suggestion would be quite opposite - hack. Mage's main weakness is to a good swing. --93.73.19.163 09:14, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

I believe the page is written this way because of the huge drain on magicka resources throughout the whole of the dungeon. The reason I say that is because the 99% ish amount of mana taken away each time Morokei speaks would incline a mage type player to act differently than they normally would and thus the suggestions in what to use, where and why. Its also apparent to me that there is more strategy to how a mage plays than to a standard warrior archtype would. I myself play as a knight (Heavy armor, 1h, block) and had no trouble during this quest. But when I went around a second time as a mage to get his mask it was significantly harder.Chronic 22:28, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Ghostly Dialog Transcript?[edit]

I just played through this quest on the PS3 and all of two of the ghostly apparition scenes worked properly, and they appear to have been numbers two and three; would it be possible to get a transcript added to this page for the people who encounter this bug? The story actually looked pretty interesting and I'm kinda bummed I missed out on it. --148.66.125.194 22:08, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

I went through and transcribed every bit of dialogue I heard during this dungeon. I'm unsure as to how I should incorporate it into the page, so I'll just dump it here.
upon arrival
SAVOS AREN: Come on, we're finally here! Let's not waste any more time!
TAKES-IN-LIGHT: Are we truly sure this is a good idea?
ATMAH: We'll be back at the College before anyone even knows we're gone.
GIRDUIN: You would care about that, since you're the Arch-Mage's favorite!
SAVOS: Don't forget, this whole idea was Atmah's to begin with.
HAFNAR ICE-FIST: Let's just get inside, see what's in there.
upon entrance
ELVALI VEREN: I can't believe we're doing this.
SAVOS: Can you imagine the looks on their faces when we come back?
HAFNAR: You keep talking like you're sure we'll find something useful in here.
GIRDUIN: Given the history of this place, it's more than likely there's still some amount of power here.
SAVOS: Enchanted weapons, tomes of ancient knowledge, Shalidor's secrets themselves -- who knows what we could find!
TAKES-IN-LIGHT: And what if... What if there are things guarding this place?
ATMAH: Against six College-trained mages? I think we'll be fine.
after skeletal dragon room
HAFNAR: We barely made it out alive, and you want to go back in?
TAKES-IN-LIGHT: What was that thing, anyway?
ATMAH: It's too late. There isn't enough of him left to go back in after.
TAKES-IN-LIGHT: Gods, what have we done?
SAVOS: We can't go back. Might as well go forward. We can still do this.
ATMAH: Savos is right. We can make it if we just stay alert.
Etched Tablet:
Hail All - Brave City Bromjunaar
Forever These Walls Shall Stand
May Enemies See Her Majesty
May All Quake to Behold Her
before frost spirit
MOROKEI: Wo meyz wah dii vul junaar?
entering next room
MOROKEI: Nivahriin muz fent siiv nid aaz het.
over bridge
MOROKEI: You do not answer... Must I use this guttural language of yours?
before door to thoroughfare
MOROKEI: Have you returned, Aren? My old friend?
nearing small waterfall
MOROKEI: Do you seek to finish that which you could not?
heading towards room past troll
MOROKEI: You only face failure once more.
nearing gate, descending stairs
MOROKEI: You, you are not Aren are you. Has he sent you in his place?
before fire spirit
MOROKEI: Did he warn you that your own power would be your undoing? That it would only serve to strengthen me?
after fire spirit
SAVOS: Come on, we can't stop now. We have to keep moving!
ATMAH: Where's Evali? [sic] She was right behind me!
HAFNAR: Dead. Something grabbed her from behind. Gone before I could do anything.
ATMAH: You're right. This is all my fault. Should we turn around, head back?
HAFNAR: I don't think going back is a good idea.
SAVOS: Going back would be the end of all of us. We keep pushing forward, and we'll make it. We will!
ATMAH: Come on, you can make it. Let's go.
walking towards trapdoor
MOROKEI: Come. Face your end.
after word wall
SAVOS: What else could we do? Stay there and die with her? She refused to go on, we didn't have a choice!
? (missing dialogue here?)
SAVOS: Agreed. We all stay together.
after defeating morokei
SAVOS: ...I'm sorry, friends. I'm so sorry!I had no choice! It was the only way to make sure that monster never escaped!
I promise you, I'll never let this happen again! I'll seal this whole place away...
ESTORMO: So, you made it out of there alive. Ancano was right... you are dangerous.
I'm afraid I'll have to take that Staff from you now. Ancano wants it kept safe... oh, and he wants you dead.
Nothing personal.
DRAGONBORN: Get out of my way.
ESTORMO: You fool. You don't stand a chance.

Thankyou for taking the time to note all this. Not all will go on the quest page, but it will go on various NPC pages. We do however have a list of all game data available for all editors, but your input is welcomed. The Silencer speaksTalk 01:59, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Tolfdir has better things to do...?[edit]

I completed the quest and returned to Tolfdir. He was engaged in battle with a one of those flying magic orb things, so I thought 'okay I'll just help him kill it'. So I did, and then Tolfdir ran off to kill another one, and it wouldn't let me talk to him because he was 'fighting'. He somehow teleported into the magical barrier where you can't enter (I think that's a glitch) and commenced the battle. And now I'm stuck outside with no Tolfdir to return to and I can't complete the quest. I don't want to tcl it to get through the barrier because I'm worried that it'll glitch even more. Stupid Tolfdir. Does anyone know how to fix this? —203.130.170.181 10:42, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

I can't recreate the "Tolfdir inaccessible / behind the barrier" bug, but I tried this: coming back to Winterhold, ignoring Tolfdir who is fighting Anomalies, running up the bridge on my own, "attacking" and breaking the barrier with the Staff of Magnus. This will end "The Staff of Magnus" and start "The Eye of Magnus". Again, I did not wait for Tolfdir who was still busy down in Winterhold. I entered the Hall of Elements and there he was, standing next to me at the door. So you don't need the Tolfdir dialogue to proceed with the quest. I guess this will also be the case with the bug mentioned above. --Holomay 18:01, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Same as above. Was able to break through barrier with staff, auto-completing the quest and starting the next. -- 21:01, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Four chests in boss battle room[edit]

I looked everywhere but only found two chests aside from the one underwater. Where is the fourth one, or is the article mistaken? — Unsigned comment by Dbbolton (talkcontribs) at 02:55 on 2 May 2012

Tribune Pool[edit]

In addition to the Gold Ore and the Malachite Ore, there appears to be a small ring next to the hand of the skeleton that lies under the rock. I could not pick up the ring however. It this merely for decoration or has anyone picked it up. I am playing this on the XBox 360. -Lord Mykhal — Unsigned comment by 68.207.200.121 (talk) at 20:03 on 2 May 2012

Sometimes small objects may get stuck in the floor or other objects. It could be just for decoration or maybe you were just unlucky with the placement of the object. Good observation, further testing should be carried out. RIM 20:20, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Staff Of Magnus obtained before ever visiting college - broken questline.[edit]

I was exploring the Labyrinthian with my (at the time) level nine mage, and using some cliff-climbing and barred-door-opening tricks I had learned, managed to make it into Morokei's room through the trapdoor that you usually exit from post-battle. I continued with this exploration, somehow managing to kill Morokei without actually letting him out of his... bubble, then took his mask and the Staff Of Magnus. Only, it was later on that I realised precisely what I'd done - I can't receive the quest that involves the retrieval of the staff that I technically already have.

Help?

Glitch- Enthralled wizards do not stop casting magic when attacked[edit]

Enthralled wizards don't stop casting magic when attacked leaving the shield up and Morokei invincible.

The wizards will fight back when attacked however they do not pause to stop casting the spell. The lightning stays in the air and even when they both die the shield is still up around Morokei.

The solution is (PC) to open the console upon first entering the room and type "killall"

the wizards and Morokei should die. But the shield is still up. Walk up to the shield and press the console button. Click on the shield for its ID to be shown, then type:

"disable" this should bring down the shield and enable you to pick up the staff of magnus.

Note that your companion might be severely hurt. They should be recovered when you return to the next area. — Unsigned comment by Natty (talkcontribs) at 12:54 on 10 July 2012

Can this be fixed for 360? — Unsigned comment by 49.176.101.157 (talk) at 22:29 on 22 February 2013

staff of magnus~[edit]

I finally made it to where morokei is but there was no energy shield around him nor were the mages casting anything, he just floated around my companion and I tried engaging but he wasnt dying. So I killed mages just to see if it changed anything but all stayed the same, please help — Unsigned comment by 71.15.125.113 (talk) at 04:31 on 2 November 2012‎

I have this same problem for the 360 — Unsigned comment by 174.141.208.104 (talk) at 17:41 on 2 February 2013

Morokei is completely invincible and I can't hit him![edit]

Yeah, that happened to me too, is there any way to fix the glitch without console commands? (I'm a ps3 user) — Unsigned comment by 98.218.156.55 (talk) at 03:55 on 13 November 2012‎

Quest doesn't start[edit]

Hey guys! I have a friend who's stuck on this quest, and I decided to see if I could rally some quest gurus to the cause. In his game, Containment completed with no issues, but The Staff of Magnus simply will not start. He knows what he's doing in the console and has tried everything he can think of to force start the quest, but with no luck. This quest line is the last thing he needs to do in order to have done literally all of the things, which, to me, is just a tragedy. Does anybody have any ideas? (I can get more details if needed—just yell!) eshetalk 17:17, 19 December 2013 (GMT)

My first guess would be setstage mg07 10... I ran into a simmilar problem with Dawnguard's Awakening, where only a full un- and reinstall of skyrim helped... -- SarthesArai Talk 17:35, 19 December 2013 (GMT)
Yeah, setstage was my first suggestion as well, but he's tried it and it didn't work. I don't know if he's tried a full reinstall, though...I wouldn't be surprised, but it's a thought! eshetalk 17:49, 19 December 2013 (GMT)
Okay, so, apparently a full reinstall did nothing to help. The issue possibly has more to do with Containment than with The Staff of Magnus, but...it's pretty much a game-wrecker. Any suggestions would be seriously appreciated! eshetalk 15:52, 2 January 2014 (GMT)

"Headless Knight" summoned by Draugr[edit]

I played this quest actually for the first (Lvl 29) and was quite surprised when those "ghostly Draugr Warlocks" summoned something labeled "Headless Knight". I've encountered them twice: First time while watching the Draugr fighting a Troll in a pit (Thoroughfare, when you come across an iron grate like trapdoor), second time was in the Tribun section, right after the throne room. Both times this "Thing" was clearly summoned by the Draugr Warlock. The Headless Knight looks exactly like the Headless Horseman but obviously lacks the horse. IIRC it even utters the same dialogue lines like the horseman. I'm just a bit confused since it is my 3rd Playthrough and I never encountered them before outside the Labyrinthian. Even more confusing is that there is no refference on such a creature/npc/summon on the uesp. It is not mod added, since I only play with both DLCs and the unofficial patches - no other files installed (besides texture replacers but I higly doubt, one of them adds this kind of summon) [1] Can someone confirm this? --23:37, 26 December 2013 (GMT)80.133.208.29

Hmm, I've never enqountered anything like this, and a quick search in CSList brings up only the horseman... -- SarthesArai Talk 12:13, 27 December 2013 (GMT)
That image seems VERY likely to be modded. The summon's name is displayed as "Headless Knight", whereas at the bottom right screen, it says "Flecha de [obscured]". Since all official DLCs are translated, this seems do be a non-translated mod. -- SarthesArai Talk 20:18, 12 September 2014 (GMT)
