Chest Behind Eldergleam[edit]

Behind the Eldergleam I found a chest, which you will need Neetlesbane to get to, as it is blocked by roots. Theron 18:29, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Sond and Asta dead![edit]

I went to this area without Maurice. I harvested the sap, and fought the 3 Spriggans and 1 Spriggan Matron. After getting back down to the main area, I found Sond and Asta dead. I'm guessing the Spriggans killed them. I am playing on Xbox.

Also, there is a lot of Dragon's Bane in this cave.

If you fall in the water, go downstream towards the bridge; on the right-hand side you can crawl out.

I spent a LONG time looking for the chest previously mentioned, and finally found it. You do need the Nettlebane weapon to get at it. At level 34, I got a Glass Warhammer of Enervating, 77 gold, a Greater Soul Gem, and Leather Boots of Sneaking.

Chest location: If you are behind the tree, bring up the local map. The left edge of the map comes down in an arc that is indented partway down. The chest is at the bottom of the indentation. Alternately, if you are standing with your back to the quest tree and facing the small tree stump, the chest is just beyond the stump and a finger or two to the left.

I'm a level 38 and I found an Iron Battleaxe of Shocks, a Scroll of Dread Zombie, a Dwarven Helmet of Major Magicka and 155 gold. Syko Conor 01:13, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

I didn't bring the weakly jondrell, he's a pain in the ass trust me. I got to fight the master spriggan or something like that and it was quite challenging, plus I saved the SOND and ASTA from being slain :) and you get to see the tree blooming in whiterun with the help of the sap. With the sapling all you get is a glitched sapling growing inside the dead old tree. — Unsigned comment by 112.200.154.36 (talk) at 15:57 on 31 December 2011

How to defeat the Hagraven ?[edit]

Have you got any tips on fighting the Hagraven ? I'm a level 10 melee fighter, not too good at spells or ranged attacks, and I keep getting toasted by its ranged Fireballs before I can get anywhere near the Hagraven. Rowena 11:07, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Answer to the OP: I was level 32 or 33 when I did that quest. (I'm level 35 now, I did that quest just the other day but been leveling up surprisingly fast.) I'm a spell-using thief, but my bow is my primary weapon. I snuck up on the Hagraven and took her out with one arrow before I crossed the bridge. I thought for a second she was going to need a second arrow, but then she finally fell over.

I strongly recommend getting some skill with bows, they are SO useful. I'm getting good at taking out dragons with them, but even for general distance work, it's so nice to take out a few baddies before they can get at you. Wherever possible, I go for spellcasters first, then archers. Oshaugm 23:09, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Different answer: I ran out to her while she was shooting at my follower. Then I used the Unrelenting Force shout, which blew her off the rock and killed her. I was level 17.

Nice! I don't think I've managed to kill anyone with that shout, yet. I had a very amusing incident though, when I was entering the treasury at Markarth, I accidentally thumbed out an Unrelenting Force shout. Crockery went flying everywhere, and the lady at the desk blew back and cowered behind the desk, shouts and cries from further inside.... Had to re-load after that. Oshaugm 12:37, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Another answer: I defeated her at level 12 with a Sword & Shield Warrior (Dwarven Sword & Dwarven Shield). First I took out all the Witches around the area then went bahind a Tent right across from Hagraven to regenerate my Health, Stamina, & Magicka (I always play without using any Potions). After I'm fully regenerated, I sprinted to the Hagraven, using Shield Block along the way to absorb Magical Spells she constantly fired at me. When I finally reached her, I Shield Bashed her then ran to the back of her Tent to Heal myself. As I've planned, she could not hit me through her own Tent and had to walk around it which gave me opportunity to use this technique to Heal myself any time my Health fell below standard level. Within a few minutes, the Hagraven fell and the victory was mine.

Pictures?[edit]

I had a hard time choosing between the sap and the sapling in this quest because I wasn't sure what the result would look like. I think maybe a picture of the sapling in Whiterun and a picture of the restored tree in Whiterun would be nice as a reference so people can see what each one is supposed to look like after the quest.

Maurice becomes hostile[edit]

Is this supposed to happen? I got sap at the tree, but then he suddenly ambushed me and tries to slash me with a dagger. This happened when spriggans suddenly appeared. — Unsigned comment by DelosFandas (talkcontribs) at 04:49 on 30 December 2011

In the event that Maurice turns hostile, you can kill him because you don't gain anything from keeping him alive. Although he only turns hostile if he is attacked. 98.183.206.163 19:54, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
He typically turns hostile around the time the Spriggans show up inside the cave. I've had him attack me several times, always after getting the sap and before seeing a Spriggan show up to attack me. VycDarkshadow (talk) 16:05, 11 March 2013 (GMT)

Staying Alive!!![edit]

If you choose to havest the sap instead of letting Maurice Jondrelle ask the Eldergleam Tree for a sapling, he will become hostile and attempt to punch you to death and a few spriggans will appear and slaughter poor Sond and Asta. :(

You can, however, keep everyone alive AND harvest the sap but it is VERY DIFFICULT! A one shot, one kill bow and a shout like slow time come in handy. Tell you follower to wait down by Sond and Asta. Just ignore Maurice as you slash the roots blocking your path to the tree. SAVE Activate the tree and hop down to where Maurice is. He'll start punching you but dont worry about it. Pick off the spriggans fighting Sond and Asta. Make your way back up to the tree killing spriggans and being punched all the way up. If your sneak is high enough and you can hide from Maurice he won't be hostile when he sees you. --Dlsmith08 08:31, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

^ Follow his advice. To add with that, having a dog wait with your follower is extra helpful. There are two spriggans that will spawn in Asta and Sonds place. Spriggan and Spriggan Matron. Just quickly jump from the eldergleam down and quickly help your follower, dog, Asta and Sond fight. No shout is required just have high weapon skills (doesn't matter what kind) just enough to quickly dispatch these annoyances. Tried it and it was cake. --112.206.47.204 18:19, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Ha. Wish I'd thought to use a dog! This is what I did:
1) Reverse pickpocketed a Potion of Extreme Healing and a Potion of Resist Magic onto Sond and Asta.
2) Left Jenassa standing by them, holding a Staff of Fireballs plus her usual weapons.
3) Went up to the top.
4) Cast Flame Cloak. Hit the tree. Summoned a Flame Atronach to deal with the Spriggan at the top by the tree.
5) Ran down to a decent vantage point and used Crossbow of Fiery Soul Trap + Exploding Dwarven Bolts of Fire to hit the Spriggan Matron and Spriggan Earth Mother that generate by the pilgrims.
Your method sounds easier :D baratron (talk) 22:09, 9 August 2013 (GMT)

With the Hagraven. I was level 7 when I beat the, thing. I summoned a Flame Atronach and had Sven and a Dawnguard Hound with me. Sven had a basic crossbow and the dog charged in. I took it down in less than two minutes. Dual-Casting Lightning Chain and it was simple.

Possible Bug - Nettlebane and Cutting the Roots[edit]

When wielding Nettlebane in my left hand I was unable to cut the roots leading to the Eldergleam Tree. After searching both ingame and the internet as to why and coming up empty, I tried switching the dagger to my right hand; started chopping the roots away in one swing. Switched back to left hand to verify and once again was unable to affect the roots. Could someone verify this and possibly add it to the 'Bugs' section for any others who have this problem? 86.179.28.190 21:32, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

For the record I have rebound my left hand to my LMB and my right hand to my RMB. 86.179.28.190 21:39, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Weapons put in your offhand aren't considered primary weapons. You must have Nettlebane in your primary (aka right) hand for this to work. I think the game was designed this way, and it doesn't seem like a bug unless it doesn't work in your right hand. VycDarkshadow (talk) 16:07, 11 March 2013 (GMT)

"Friendly" Spriggans - Confirm?[edit]

The page currently says that if you run away and come back, the Spriggans will be 'friendly.' I tried several times and never got this effect. Upon returning, I witnessed the Spriggan Matron and a Spriggan fighting. The Matron won, but she was hostile to me when I 'revealed' myself. Thinking perhaps the Matron stays hostile, but the other Spriggans switch sides (which would explain why they fought each other), I did another new attempt where I immediately killed the Matron and then ran away. However, the Spriggans on the lower level and the upper level were still hostile to me when I came back (I did not attack any). I also tried running away, completing the quest, got rid of Nettlebane and came back. The Spriggans were always hostile. Has this worked for anyone else, and if so, please explain exactly what you did. Thanks, --Amsuko 02:29, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

I don't know about the quest side of this but in the wild you often see Spriggan's fighting each other, other times not. The Wiki only lists two ID's (Spriggan 00023ab9 and Matron 000f3905) so I'm not sure of the dynamics that make them fight each other. However, even when fighting each other in the wild, once they see you they attack ignoring their previous fight with each other. Philbert (talk) 00:49, 17 October 2012 (GMT)
Yeah I've seen the non-hostile spriggans and the fighting spriggans. Non-hostile ones seem to be just an oddity... mostly I've seen it after fighting alongside a spriggan against dragons. The fighting spriggans almost seems to be caused by 2 spriggans using their Call of Nature power on the same animal... almost wondering if its like how in Oblivion if you used the Command Humanoid on a bandit to make him an ally, the other bandits would stay hostile to the bandit you commanded. That one spriggans Call of Nature affects the other one and causes an issue with their relationships. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 01:24, 17 October 2012 (GMT)

resetquest?[edit]

Anyone know what happens if you reset this quest using resetquest? Specifically, when I did this quest I never met the guy that offers to follow you and thereby unlocks the 'sapling' means to complete this quest. Right now Whiterun has the restored gildergreen with the broken latticework after having been invaded by the stormcloaks. If I reset this mission and do it again, only this time bringing the guy over to obtain the sapling, will the tree in whiterun update to the sapling?

Answer--- Yes it will

Displaying Trees[edit]

Is there a way of displaying the sapling if you chose the sap, or the Blooming tree if you chose the sapling using console commands?— Unsigned comment by 144.132.5.135 (talk) at 10:33 on 31 January 2012

Yes. You can remove the dead Gildergreen with MarkForDelete and then "enable" the sapling. The sapling's ID is 46284. What's the healthy Gildergreen's ID? I did the sapling thing and now I'd want the Gildergreen to be a big honking tree instead of a scrawny bush, but it's been so long since I did the quest reloading would mean losing a whole week's worth of playing. Plus I'd really prefer if the hippies in the cave would not be butchered by Spriggans.
--Morgion 06:47, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
In addition to the healthy gildergreen id whats the id of the dead one? — Unsigned comment by 24.38.235.96 (talk) at 09:29 on 16 July 2012
instead of using "markfordelete" (what will mess up the game if you start a new character) try the command "str 0.000001" on the tree. the ID of the dead tree (when you click on it)is 00023612. When you use the "str" command, you will render the tree invisible, but it will be still there. If the tree is still invisible on your next playthrough, just click on the point where it should be, make sure that the ID 00023612 is "active" and use the command "str 0.000000" to make it visible again. The use of the "markfordelete" command is the best way to destroy your game for future playthroughs.— Unsigned comment by 188.100.0.93 (talk) at 20:03 on 31 July 2012
Are you trying to say that using the "markfordelete" command permanently removes the selected item from the game data files? This has not been my experience. I have used it many times (notably on Louis Letrush) in a previous playthrough, and he appeared just fine on my current game. --XyzzyTalk 05:33, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

() yes, that happend to me. After using "markfordelete" with one character one my next playthrough the item was missing, making the game unplayable. After loading the skyrim.esm into the creation kit the item was still marked for delete. — Unsigned comment by 178.9.22.236 (talk) at 17:19 on 1 August 2012

Skill Book "A Tragedy in Black"[edit]

Nettlebane turns into a Blood Dragon[edit]

I've got the best bug. Ir has been a long time since I did this quests, but I just noticed I still had nettlebane in my inventory. When I drop Nettlebane it turns into a blood dragon. If I do this outside it flies around and can be killed like any other dragon. If I put nettlebane in a weaponrack it turns into a blood dragon mounted vertically to the wall that clips through the ceiling and floor. If I drop it inside it falls through the floor and everyone around draws weapons and stares down. Unless I drop it on something elevated like a table, and then it appears in the room, and again can be slain like normal. --99.190.75.142 00:32, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

That's weird but really cool. Do you have any idea why that happened? Are you on X-Box, PS3, or PC? If on PC, use the Kit to find out why that would happen. Other than that, I would suggest creating a new game and doing the quest again. If it happens again, chances are your install data is messed up. Just a guess. I really don't know.--Grim765 05:13, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Are the animals supposed to be mad at me?[edit]

I left the cave after going down the sap route and all the local animals showed up as enemies and just stared at me. Like goats, foxes, and whatnot. At first it was just easy pickens for my soul gems but it got creepy and I just left. Is this part of the quest? Like if I pissed off Kynereth? Senator 05:00, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Could have been Spriggans. They have the ability to control animals and make them attack you. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 20:12, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Worse - my experience is that once an animal is made hostile by a spriggan, it STAYS hostile. If the animal is a pre-set in the area (I.E. it has an actual refID, it isn't just a random spawn), then it will always be hostile.174.28.48.205 07:54, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Gildergreen Sapling[edit]

So I chose to get a sapling from the Eldergleam and when I went back to Whiterun, the sapling was planted but the giant dead gildergreen was still there. Now I've looked at some pictures of the sapling tree, and I know now that the dead tree is supposed to disappear, however mine didn't. I'm just wondering if this is a common bug for everyone or if this is a rare occurrence. I'll also add that I play on Xbox.--Pmrx78

It is a known bug - and it rather ruins an otherwise excellent quest. The bug is mentioned here. --Krusty (talk) 20:02, 19 November 2012 (GMT)

Gildergreen's IDs from its 3 differents forms[edit]

So, because I encounter myself the "sapling into the old tree" glitch, I've tried to search the ID of the fully bloomed Gildergreen's ID and was surprised to see absolutely NO ONE ever mentionned it. I rush the quest in a older save where I didn't do already the quest.

I will also join information already given and put the list of the 3ID corresponding to Gildergreen's different form :

ID : 00023612 (original/dead Gildergreen)

ID : 00046284 (New little "Gildergreen", the sapling)

ID : 000461ce (fully bloom Gildergreen , from when you do the "Wrath of Kynareth" way if you refer to the article)

No-one exposed the trick (PC only) I used myself, about the sapling glitch, so here it is, if it can help : I just scaled the old dead tree to a point of which it's not visible anymore, by console command : setscale 0.1

Furthermore, I also have to say the article is completely false about "The next time you visit Whiterun, the Gildergreen will be growing again". Actually I've observed that you can wait in-game as long as you want (I wait as long as 5 days), Gildergreen/sapling will bloom/grow only after there is some progression with your quests. (Just waiting and even fast-travelling wasn't enough in my game. But after I decided to advance a little a random quest I had, suddenly the final form Gildergreen was here, so I suspect that the trigger might be faking "wait some time" by looking at any other quest progressing)

But, what is sure, is that just travelling and coming back won't be enough (nor does waiting less than, at least, 5 days). Maybe someone can confirm that. 90.58.188.19 22:06, 14 January 2013 (GMT)

Unfortunately doing the Sapling way of the mission "The Blessings of Nature", will never get you the fully grown Gildergreen. Your sappling will grow from a small sappling to a small tree and then, later in the game, will grow to a medium tree. But no matter how much you wait (I waited 8 weeks), the tree will NEVER grow into the full grown tree. If you want to enjoy the fully grown Gildergreen you have to do the sap way of the mission. Very unfair of Bethesda's part...--85.75.146.137 08:36, 29 January 2013 (GMT)

Regarding the Old Gildergreen Reference ID[edit]

I'm a total newb to using the console and such so i could use some feedback, i found a form ID for the old tree in http://content3.uesp.net/oblivion/cs/cslist.php?game=sr searching for the RefID of the tree as it apears in the game when clicking it with the console open (00023612), and it leads to the parent ID: 00046360.

When using the disable command on this ID the old tree goes away just fine, but i don't know if it could lead to any problems later on.

So is it safe to use this ID to "erase" the old tree or could it break something that markfordelete wouldn't?

Thanks. — Unsigned comment by 186.50.78.105 (talk) at 03:01 on 25 March 2013

Not so harmless Maurice[edit]

When I passed by Valtheim Towers I had to kill all the bandits. I and my follower successfully annihilated them, and I saw that Maurice took steel battleaxe from bandit chief we killed on the bridge. Probably you can drop him some battleaxe or other two-handed weapon from the beginning, so he has better chances of survival (of course he never returns it unless dead).

Maurice travel hint[edit]

Well, I certainly did this quest out of order. And the following should be tested without MODs before adding to the other Maurice travel hint.

I did the quest as normal. But when I went back to Danica with Nettlebane, she was just leaving the market around 6PM. She pointed me at Eldergleam Sanctuary and off I went (no Maurice). After cutting my way to the top, I was standing in front of the Eldergleam. Then I started wondering how I get the choice (Yes, I already had finished this quest before). I went around and talked to everyone (again). No choice. Came here to read. Went back to Danica who was now in the temple. Had the conversation again, and this time Maurice showed up. After leaving the temple, I did not see Maurice until I had re-entered Eldergleam Sanctuary. As soon as I did, he started his dialogue about how I was a person of violence and offered me the choice.
