Mercers' Corpse[edit]

For some reason, Mercers' corpse does not contain the left eye or skeleton key when i try to kill him, and the console command isn't working. Any advice? 93.97.36.81 17:06, 20 November 2011 (UTC)Baze

to fix the cutscence bug where Mercer standing there not doing anything after saying "you can't get a drop on me", use epc and then shoot anything that damages Mercer then he will start walking and continue the cutscene. --115.70.177.231 12:20, 21 November 2011 (UTC) lampuiho
or you can also use "prid 22651" then "moveto player" --115.70.177.231 12:24, 21 November 2011 (UTC) lampuiho
Are you supposed to be unable to remove the left eye but you can the right one? Shane for Wax 05:30, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
I believe the left is marked as a quest item - you can return it to Delvin for a reward. I'm not sure if there's any special use for the right eye or if it's just loot. Bootstomp 05:58, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Does anyone have any help to get Mercer to have the other eye and the Skeleton Key? I've tried many different console commands and restarting the quest, but he still doesn't have it. I've had other fishing job as well that I've had to quit because the item is not on the target person. skeleton key stays on mercer even thought i took it

Glitch - Telling Karliah and Brynjolf to Wait[edit]

I kept telling Karliah and Brynjolf to wait in the first large zone you enter, so I could scout ahead. They normally wait a bit then exit "wait mode" and catch up with you.

Unfortunately, while waiting on the first balcony, they entered "combat mode" due to enemies spawning down below. You're unable to talk to them at that point. Since there's no direct path they can take, they just run in place. I worked my way around the zone, cleared out everything, then came back and got them.

Bootstomp 06:35, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

There is another glitch, where after defeating Mercer and escaping the rising waters, if you exit into Skyrim Brynjolf and Karliah will not follow, and upon further investigation it soon becomes apparent that the characters are stuck. To avoid this, make sure you speak to Karliah before exiting. — Unsigned comment by 173.206.222.41 (talk) at 01:20 on 29 November 2011
XBOX glitch. Even talking to Karliah before attempting to exit the cavern filling with water does not get her to exit the cave. I have attempted this sequence a dozen times, to no avail. There is nothing I can do to get her to exit the cave, and she does not ever leave. I have done an additional 50+ hours of game play, and she is still in the cave underwater. — Unsigned comment by 50.90.10.229 (talk) at 23:47 on 6 December 2011
The console can be used to fix the problem with Karliah getting stuck at the quest's end. In the console, type "prid 58F1A" and enter to select Karliah, then type "moveto player" and enter to move her to you. This way you can talk to her and continue the quest. — Unsigned comment by 109.99.107.212 (talk) at 19:40 on 7 December 2011
The console solution is all fine and good for PC users. I guess if you are an XBOX user, there is no way to finish the Thieves Guild questline once this glitch occurs. — Unsigned comment by 217.74.214.227 (talk) at 21:06 on 15 December 2011
I was in the same predicament but managed to overcome it (360). Although u will need some waterbreathing magic/potions. First be sure to save before leaving the cave for the first time as it can be tricky. Hopefully Karliah will be in "swimming mode" when u reenter the cave and close to the top of the water. From here you need to swim underneath her and try to push her up. She doesn't budge by force but seems to move away from being so close to you. Then it is a matter of herding her towards the exit. This must basically be done in one go meaning you need to remain underneathe her or she will swim down below again. With patience you can get her out. Thats how I had to do it as annoying as it was. - Jonny Bravo 10:05, 17 December 2011
(Xbox 360) This is for those that have gotten as far as the inner sancutary on this part. I found out that if you told them to wait, and do not tell karliah "lets go" they will not follow you or escape the pool. Therefore you cannot finish it. My suggestion save before the mercer fight, wait for your nightie friends to reappear and make sure this option is selected. Otherwise they will just walk around in the water going up and down. I had this glitch much earlier, in the Falmer room with the collapsed tower- Karliah was stuck on some rocks. I ended up using the Unrelenting Force shout to unstick her, and she seems to be following fine now.

Missing follower inventory[edit]

When I finished this quest and my (Dark Brotherhood Initiate) follower rejoined me, some of the armor I had given her had disappeared. Specifically, she lost her chestpiece and gauntlets. Not sure if it's relevant, but these were the only equipped items she had which had lower base armor value than her default armor (though they had been improved to a higher armor value). In any case, it may be a good idea to dismiss your follower before beginning this quest, or strip their possessions. — Unsigned comment by Shaydwyrm (talkcontribs) at 08:18 on 13 December 2011

Probably the same bug I had with Speaking With Silence. 71.132.201.220 09:01, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

After killing Mercer, suppose to retrieve skeleton key and exit through hole after rocks fall.[edit]

I'm playing Skyrim on PS3. I'm in the middle of playing the "Blindsighted" quest. I just located Mercer and beat him in a battle. Now, my next objective is to search Mercer and retrieve the skeleton key. I search his body and he has a few items in his inventory, but no skeleton key. He also only has the Left Eye Gem, not sure if he's suppose to have the right gem as well. Water starts filling up the room all the way to the ceiling. I watched a video online showing the rocks that are suppose to fall out from behind the head of the statue but in my game the water fills all the way up and the rocks never detach. So my character just ends up drowning. Any ideas on how to get around this our why Mercers body does not have the skeleton key? — Unsigned comment by 98.238.124.95 (talk) at 16:03 on 13 December 2011

Brynjolf and Karliah not following me in Irkngthand[edit]

I met them in the first trapped room, very near the Irkngthand entrance (the one with the whirling jets of fire). I spoke to them and got the "Locate Mercer Frey" objective. Then they started walking towards the entrance, ignoring me completely. I walked up to them and tried giving them follower orders (wait here, follow me etc.). They listened and agreed, but kept ignoring me and walking back to the entrance. I went deeper inside (even up to the slave pens) alone, then tried the "moveto player" command. They appeared next to me, and now I couldn't even give them follower orders, all that appeared was standard conversation. Needless to say, they ignored me and went on. This may be connected with the bug where they return to the Nightingale Sanctuary, but maybe I just met it much earlier? --Photon Man62 08:12, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Brynjolf Missing after completing quest, before doing the Twilight Sepulchur[edit]

Last place I saw Byrnjolf was in the tunnel after you escape the water chamber, and the quest finishes - He would say something like he has a lot to do blah blah and would meet back at the guild

Well now that i'm in position to take over the guild (the 4 missions in the other towns done, etc) he's missing, he's been missing, I just didn't bother worrying until now So Questions are - How do I get back into that Tunnel to see if he's there, or how do i find him otherwise, i'm on 360. — Unsigned comment by 98.247.210.14 (talk) at 01:47 on 29 December 2011

Bronze Water Cave is where he likes to hang, but he won't talk to you and he won't leave. Once you enter the Twilight Sepulcher and your quest updates accordingly the game seems to indicate that he should be in the Cistern, but he must still be changing his clothes 'cause he won't be there yet. Speak to the Twilight Sentinal and after your quest updates to reflect this latest event Brynjolf will now be puttering around in the Cistern as usual but still will refuse to speak with you. Karliah and Brynjolf not catching up...again![edit]

(Xbox 360) When zoning from Grand Cavern to Slave Pens, my game was crashing on the loading screen. It seems after a bit of research that on the other side of the door the two NPCs need to be with you. After waiting about 48 hours before going through it seems to have solved it. Karliah and Brynjolf walking to entrance of Irkngthand[edit]

Once I entered Irkngthand, the quest marker was one that told me that I had to go inside a different area but as I progressed through it became a quest marker which we were in the same area. I talked to Karliah to get the "Locate Mercer Frey" objective but she is still walking towards the entrance. I'm playing on the 360 and this is the first glitch I've experienced. — Unsigned comment by 99.234.167.197 (talk) at 20:16 on 2 January 2012

Water won't rise[edit]

I was having the glitch where Mercer was stuck. I fixed this by setting the quest stage to 40. After killing Mercer, and getting the eyes and the skeleton key, the water begins to rise. The water stops going up when it reaches the third step, and then stays there. The escape tunnel never opens up for me. Has anyone else gotten this or fixed it? — Unsigned comment by 75.104.128.37 (talk) at 03:58 on 8 January 2012

It happened to me too a few times....I just saved it before I entered the room.
Then when I used that code, I went up to Mercer (once the rumbling happened a few times) and I attacked him once.
He started attacking me, and then I killed him....
I waited to see if the water rose this time before taking the items, and it did; I don't know how it got fixed but I'm glad it did - just keep at it, and it should get fixed eventually. — Unsigned comment by 72.138.244.83 (talk) at 02:33 on 14 March 2012

Karliah and Brynjolf just leave Irkngthand[edit]

I am on PS3. When I got into Irknghthand Karliah and Brynjolf walked all the way to the entrance and exit. When I followed them out I try telling them to wait or follow but they ignore me. So now do I have to continue doing Irkgnthand by myself? — Unsigned comment by 75.104.128.37 (talk) at 03:58 on 8 January 2012

I had the same problem. Just continue on to Mercer and Karliah and Brynjolf will turn up when you find him. 203.45.143.21 03:50, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Can confirm that. Just go through the whole dungeon and they will be there in the last room. — Unsigned comment by 178.192.103.233 (talk) at 22:33 on 23 January 2012

Mercer not there[edit]

When I enter the sanctuary, my character freezes and I can't do anything except look around. And, mercer isn't there!!!! I cant continue until this is fixed, please help! — Unsigned comment by 66.122.68.223 (talk) at 20:35 on 16 January 2012

The same happened to me and none of the suggestions that I found in the internet were successful. I finally managed to get around this problem though. There is a bug with this quest, but it happens earlier, just after you meet Brynjolf and Karliah. Once you have talked to Karliah, you have to proceed through the door. In the next room, Karliah will suddenly spot Mercer at the far end of the cavern and when you watch him through the gate, you will see him sneak attacking two Falmers and then disappear. When I first played the quest, this scene did not trigger, and when I came to the sanctuary, Mercer was not there (although his voice could be heard saying a single phrase) and the game froze. I suppose that the game engine actually sets up Mercer at this location during that sneak attack scene, and then, moves him on to the sanctuary, so triggering the scene is essential for the completion of the quest. When I played the quest again from a previous save just before entering the dwarven ruin (thereby matching Einstein's definition of insanity: repeating an experiment and expecting a different result ...), I managed to trigger the scene and later on had no problems in the sanctuary (Mercer being there and no freezing at all). Investigating this further, I found out that the sneak attack scene did often not trigger when I sneaked into the room where I'm supposed to watch it. Only if I didn't sneak while entering that room, Karliah always triggered the scene almost immediately.84.171.181.143 11:18, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
I get the exact same on XBOX and I updated yesterday. Still won't work proper when entering the Irthknd Sanctuary when on Blindsighted Quest with a new file or earlier save game, therefore I cannot get all achievements. This must be sorted out I really want the story to come to what probably is a good conclusion but I'll never know. SUCKS — Unsigned comment by 82.145.217.46 (talk) at 23:59 on 15 September 2012

Detect Life Scrolls[edit]

The Notes section mentions a couple scrolls in a room that Mercer has looted. On my play through, these were Detect Life scrolls, which were very helpful when fighting him later. If these are always Detect Life, it would be worth mentioning either in the fighting Mercer section, or in the note. Motoma 02:48, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

These were Detect Life scrolls for me as well. I found three total in that area. -- 24.149.111.41 18:40, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Mercer, the noob[edit]

In my game, after the dialogue, Mercer just stands there with his fists raised, looking at Karliah. He doesn't draw any weapon nor uses any power on Karliah or Brynjolf, nor does he turn on me, even if I punch him a few times. It's pretty amusing, but I wish Karliah didn't shoot him to death so fast. This doesn't bug the quest in any way, thankfully.--201.1.29.2 19:29, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Help With Quest Breaking Bug[edit]

I have a quest-breaking bug that I cannot seem to figure out. I have had multiple glitches related to this area of the thieves guild quests, though I have managed to fix most. The first glitch was when I walked to the twilight sepulcher entrance for the "Meet Karliah at the Standing Stone" part of the Trinity Restored quest, Karliah and Brynjolf were not present. I used prid to select both NPCs and I used moveto to travel them to me; this made the quest continue. Another strange occurance was the when I went to go pickup the nightingale armour Karliah and Brynjolf grabbed theirs and continued before I had mine. After this Karliah started flicking the switch for the gate over and over. To fix this I spoke with her then hit the switch to open the gate. The cutscene went properly (I assuming) and afterwords I spoke with Karliah then Brynjolf, ending the Trinity Restored quest. Just after being told I would be the new leader of the guild the dialog with Brynjolf ended with him saying something like: "Not now lad, I have other things to attend to." I was not told to go to Irkngthand and the quest Blindsighted did not begin. I did not think anything of it and continued doing other quests. Later I saw Brynjolf (in nightingale armour) walking around in Riften, and thought it was odd. I went on the wiki and saw the Blindsighted quest, so I figured I should just travel to Irkngthand. After clearing the vicinity of bandits (and "discovering" the place on the map) I could not find out how to get in. I spent a good while trying to find the enterance but could not. I figured it must have been related to not having the quest, so I tried to fix it. After saving I tried using moveto to Brynjolf, who was in the Theives Guild, but he only said the not now thing. I then reloaded my save and used moveto to Karliah. I ended up near what I believe was the exit of Snow Veil Sanctum. Karliah stood walking into (sort inside) a gate. I tried speaking with her and it only allowed me to ask who is nocturnal etc... I once again reloaded my save, this time using getstage to find my stage in trinity restored. It was 200 (completed). I checked for Blindsighted, it was 0.00. I tried the command setstage TG08B 10 and nothing happened (although I have had difficulty getting the setstage command to work before). I tried player.setstage TG08B 10 and once again nothing happend. I have not been able to figure out how to fix this bug and it would be greatly appreciated if I got some help. I know how to use the console, so I do not mind fixing it through command methods. I also do not mind skipping a small section of this quest (or possible the entire quest) to move on, but I not 100% sure how to do that.

Thanks.

Easter Egg?[edit]

I'm interested to know what others think about this... but the scene where you encounter Mercer and the final fight with him... when you first enter, and see Mercer hanging from the ancient falmer statue, prying the eye loose, looks quite similar to the cover art on the early printing of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook, which displays a thief in a very situation, stealing a large jeweled eye from a statue of (I believe) the demon lord Moloch... thoughts? Agreements? Refutations? Confirmation? — Unsigned comment by 24.34.69.74 (talk) at 12:18 on March 10, 2012

I agree, but can't remember which manual that was... if you can find an image online, linking it may be fun. At the same time I think this may be a similar situation, and there may be some inspiration, but I'm not sure that it's an Easter egg... might be worth checking the other elements of the 'scene' (eg: the statue, the environs, etc). You are somewhat correct - the AD&D Player's Handbook (4th ed, 1980) features TWO thieves prying the right eye out (left side of the picture) of a demon statue while other adventurers are talking in the foreground. Just google it, as I can't find any pictures of it that aren't on eBay (and my camera was stolen recently, so I can't take a pic of mine!) — Unsigned comment by 71.204.50.95 (talk) at 08:50 on 17 May 2012

Touching water freezes game[edit]

I'm playing skyrim on ps3 and have gotten through almost the entire blindsighted quest. I am currently stuck in irkngthand sanctuary after defeating mercer frey and every time the water starts to rise, if I touch the water the game freezes. I have restarted the system at least 5 times now and it seems there is no hope in sight. Also I always save my game on the same save file so I can't just load an earlier part of the game anymore. Sounds like the new bug with update 1.5, delete update and game data in the Game Data Utility, then download the update and reinstall data. Hopefully that solves the issue. And use one of the auto saves if you can, to go back to before the water starts coming in. The Silencer has spoken 17:42, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
I also had this issue on a PS3 and this fix worked (thanks The Silencer). As info, this only deletes the game (not your saves) and then reinstalls the 1.5 update properly. — Unsigned comment by Tiggerthetiger23 (talkcontribs) at 22:27 on 12 April 2012
Happened to me too. Deleted the latest update (ONLY) and reinstalled it and it no longer freezes. However the glitch now is that Brynjolf, and Karliah do not follow me out of the cave at the top to the next part of the quest.

I had this same problem on the PC. I'm not sure how the Xbox differs game differs, but on the PC there is a fixit console in which you can input commands to move and reset the characters, (among other things). Sometimes when I entered the cave Karliah and Brynjolf would be floating motionless in the water as if they were standing on land, and at other times they would be swimming around. Regardless, I swam down to Karliah and opened the console, "~" key on the PC, targeting her to bring up her reference code, 00058f1a. After I closed the console, I swam back to the first dry room through the hole above the giant statue's head. I reopened the console, which still had Karliah's code active, and typed "moveto player". Upon closing the console, Karliah was on dry land and was available to continue the quest. She gave me her bow and started the new phase of the quest. Rpger (talk) 22:19, 4 April 2013 (GMT)
BTW, the "moveto player" command is also great to retrieve horses that have wandered off if you come out of a dungeon overloaded. Just write down the horse code and input it first before using "moveto player". Rpger (talk) 22:23, 4 April 2013 (GMT)

nothing happens after Mercer says "Kharliah, when will you learn you cant get the drop on me"[edit]

So I'm playing Skyrim on A X-Box 360, And I enter the place where mercer's at, he's not prying off the gems, he just appears next to me after kharliah tells Brynjolf to stand guard, then says his line. I can't move around like usual, I can only look around. I can't go back to a save because I deleted them (I usually don't have glitch problems so I didn't think I needed to...I know, very stupid of me) I already restarted my console various times, cleaned the disc, but every single time-boom-glitch. I solved this. First I made a save before the door to the area. Then I used tcl on the console to turn the collision off before entering. Upon entry, I appeared dislocated and the conversation sequence was not yet initiated. I slid to Mercer Frey and used tcl again to drop nearby. I hit him once, to get his attention. Then I initiated a conversation, having him to attack me. At this point he is apparently marked as essential character, so at some point you'll want to use setessential 1B07C 0 to remove that flag. Kill him. Then don't worry about the others. Just slide up (tcl again) the statue where rocks will still be stuck and look for a pathway to the Bronze Water Cave. Upon entering the cave, you'll hear their voices. Just slide a bit more towards them and you'll be able to continue (further dialogue will be initiated where Karliah says she couldn't believe it was over). --92.244.131.149 14:35, 26 October 2012 (GMT)

Use the console command setstage TG08B 40 to fix this.

mercer can't get down[edit]

I had this same problem, and I noticed a message in the top left corner saying my follower couldn't come in with me or words to that effect. (XBOX) This just happened to me. I entered the room and could see Mercer prying the eyes out, then he would just get stuck. My followers also wouldn't enter behind me. UUUGHHHHH[edit]

I am playing skyrim on my pc, and I enter the place where mercer is. Karliah is whispering, telling us that he doeant notice us here or whatever. And mercer says something about Karliah not being able to drop one on him. Then the story doesn't progress. I can't move, or draw my weapon. I've tried epc to move and kill him, and it doesn't work. I try to kill him but it doesn't work. All he does is go into that crouch position and then his health is full when he gets up. I've also done the setstage that ends in 60, but I still can't kill him. I've tried restating that quest from when u fist go in the building and all the dead bandits are laying there. I've never used any cheats until the epc and setstage. Please help! I can't play skyrim at the moment! Thanks all. — Unsigned comment by 24.65.110.69 (talk) at 22:22 on 17 November 2013‎

Do you have any mods running? Have you tried fast traveling out and then returning to the area? (Try typing coc Irkngthand01.) Have you tried reloading an old save? (If not, please learn to make multiple saves; Bethesda games are often buggy like this.) To kill him, have you tried opening the console, clicking on him once so his ID appears, and typing kill? I've tried loading multiple times back a bit. No change. Don't have any mods running nor have I ever used them. Is there anyway that I can kill him using cheats and get the quest completed? — Unsigned comment by 24.65.110.69 (talk) at 15:15 on 18 November 2013‎

I've tried clicking him with commands up and killing him, but it won't work. He just kneels. I've tried talking to everyone, but it says their busy. Its like the story can't progress. If it wasn't for cheats, I wouldn't be able to move. Is there a patch at all?

Missing centurion?[edit]

Playing on xbox 360, there is no Dwarven Centurion in the Grand Cavern. It's literally just missing. I can walk through the spot where it's supposed to be standing, deactivated (at least where I assume it should be), so it's not invisible or unrendered. Anyone else had this problem? Also I can't find a body anywhere, so I doubt it was activated in a glitch and subsequently killed by the Falmer. 68.200.221.151 00:05, 19 November 2013 (GMT)

  • Ug, I thought not having cookies on was not displaying my posts so I turned them on and tried a third time - can someone please delete my previous two identical posts? 68.200.221.151 00:06, 19 November 2013 (GMT)
  • Thanks, whoever just deleted them. Quick response! 68.200.221.151 00:10, 19 November 2013 (GMT)

Serana as a follower[edit]

Not sure whether or not the following note belongs on the Blindsighted Quest page (or anywhere?):

If Serana is your follower during Blindsighted she will not accompany you into Irkngthand Arkanex. She will only follow as you far as the entrance, then she remains outside when you enter.

When you exit Irkngthand Sanctuary, thereby completing the penultimate quest objective, 'Escape From Irkngtham', Serana will rejoin you in Bronze Water Cave, possibly before you can complete the final objective, 'Speak to Karliah'.

This may be true with other followers as well.

Gharveyn a collective representative... ;^) Enjoy! 14:35, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

This is true of all followers. It's not entirely clear in writing here, but it is on the location page. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 13:07, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

PC Issue: Having tough time getting Brynjolf and Karliah to follow[edit]

I've done this quest before multiple times with no issue. However I'm doing it again and I'm having issue getting Karliah and Brynjolf to follow (this starts after I leave the room with the two levers to get the door open). They will follow a little and then stand still some I'm constantly running back to them to encourage them to follow. Is this due to an update, or have I just been luck until now? How can I get them to follow me normally?

Update: never mind. A restart to accept an OS update fixed everything. — Unsigned comment by 73.160.156.218 (talk) at 01:24 on 21 December 2017

Brynjolf and Karliah Staying in Bronze Water Cave[edit]

I finished Blindsighted. Got the Skeleton Key. Picked up the Left Eye of the Flamer and it seems I can sell it to Delvin without a glitch. Talked to Karliah. Got the Nightingale Bow. The quest to start the Pilgrim Path began as it should.

But Karliah and Brynjolf seem inclined to just hang out in Bronze Water Cave. Neither one set off back home. Is this a bug or is this expected behavior? Will they show up where they're supposed to be when I go do the final quest? If they eventually leave, how long does it usually take them to get back? If they hang out in Bronze Water Cave for the rest of the game, I don't see how I can become guildmaster.Valeria (talk) 14:20, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
