The Frozen Man

The Frozen Man is a crazed Bosmer ghost found in Orkey's Hollow. He has trapped Eiman inside a block of ice and you will have to find a way to rescue him. Since the Frozen Man likes mysteries and games, you need to solve some puzzles in order to free Eiman.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

When you enter Orkey's Hollow and explore the place, the Frozen Man will be observing you from distance, commenting on various things. Approaching Eiman who is entombed inside a solid block of ice prompts a rhymed comment from the Frozen Man:

The Frozen Man: "This one's frozen! Is it someone you know? Guess who I am, and I might let him go."

As you proceed further into the cave, he yells:

The Frozen Man: "Keep walking! There couldn't possibly be traps!"
The Frozen Man: "You'll make a lovely squirrel. So inquisitive!"

When you find his old campsite and search his backpack, he pouts:

The Frozen Man: "How rude! Digging through my things. What manners!"

In the northern part of the cave there are several items which belonged to the Frozen Man's friends; he confirms that, saying:

The Frozen Man: "This is where I keep my friends. Go on. Introduce yourself."

Using the Daedric Vase summons a ghost of a friend:

The Frozen Man: "Tarak of the Silver Claw! Always joking. He's much happier as a vase."

Using a candelabra summons a ghost of another friend:

The Frozen Man: "Doesn't Arawe look splendid? Always so shiny."

Using a milk jug results in him commenting:

The Frozen Man: "This is Oriell. We're brothers! I'm better looking."

Upon reaching his journal, he objects:

The Frozen Man: "Leave that be! That's private!"

When you reach the last clue, a battered chest, the Frozen Man hints that it's difficult to reach it:

The Frozen Man: "Look up, greedy squirrel! See something shiny? Don't break your neck!"

When you've climbed up to the chest, he yells:

The Frozen Man: "Astounding! You've accomplished the impossible! Leaping small rocks!"

If you talk to him before getting all the clues:

"Have you any idea? Ooh, this is so exciting!"
Let Eiman go.
"That's no fun! Go on, look around!
Oh, and mind the bears. I never got around to changing them back."

When you have gathered all clues and reach him, the Frozen Man wonders:

The Frozen Man: "What have you got, clever squirrel? Do you have a guess?"

When you talk to him, he says,

"Digging away! Puffy little cheeks. What have you found?"
You're a spy from the Aldmeri Dominion.
"A spy, am I? But why? Oh, my!
You're a smart one. Whatever will I do with you?"
I guessed who you are. Let Eiman go.
"That's no fun! Join me inside. We'll play a game of shells.
Win, and you get Eiman. Lose, and you'll be my newest squirrel."
All right. One more game.

When you enter the Frozen Man's lair, he will summon copies of himself and wants you to guess which one is the real Frozen Man:

The Frozen Man: "Here I am! Or am I here? Guess wrong, and you're mine, my dear."

If you pick the wrong one, he'll be amused, and the copies will move:

The Frozen Man: "Ooh, so close!"
The Frozen Man: "Hey, over here! Ha ha ha!"
The Frozen Man: "Ha ha! Got you! Try again."

After finding out the real Frozen Man, he runs away.

The Frozen Man: "No fair!"

Upon you finding him, he shoos you away:

"Don't talk to me. I'm a shrub."
Let Eiman go.
"Your soul is missing. Want mine? It's black and gooey."
I won your game. Now let Eiman go.
"No. We're having old friends for supper. Drink some roots. Stay with us! You'll be safe here."
Safe from what?
"The stones! The shiny ones. They're pretty until you turn your back, and then ... whoosh! Skulls implode. Bones shatter."
You're talking about a cave-in.
"This is my safest place. My friends are here. Don't take them!"
I don't want your friends. I just want Eiman.
"Want, want, want. Greedy squirrels. We wanted to leave here, but then? Shiny stones.
I ate them after. They were cold. They hurt my teeth."

If you exit the conversation and talk to him again:

"Go away, little squirrel. Before the shiny stones find you."

You can respond in three ways to try and convince him to release Eiman:

What about this rune? Don't you want it back?
"It gives me headaches! And it tastes like sawdust. Go on, you eat it."
If you don't let him go, I'm going to have to hurt you.
"The shiny stones did that. The roots, the water, Oriell's three toes.
I tried to save him, but his head wouldn't stop leaking. Now he's a milk jug."
Eiman will die if you don't release him.
"People don't die. They change shape, like Arawe. She's a candlestick. She's bright as the stars. And Tarak? He's never been happier."
If Arawe's a candle, and Oriell's a milk jug, that makes you a bear trap, doesn't it?
"So?"
So nobody wants to be caught in a bear trap. Not even squirrels.
"That's ... that's the first thing you've said that makes any sense.
Fine, take Eiman. Just leave my friends alone. And don't blame me if the shiny stones get you."

Speaking to him after this exchange:

"Go, go on now! He's not frozen anymore."
