It was originally planned for each dungeon to get a unique Veteran version (later a mark II instance) that served as a sequel to the story. However, after the success of the dungeon DLC monetary system the plan was scrapped.

  • Direfrost Keep II - Given a full unique exterior that can only be visited by going out of the map. Though complete, the dungeon was never released. The successor in terms of story and design became Icereach.
  • Arx Corinium II - Given a mostly complete map, the dungeon was never released. It had elements of its design repurposed into Ruins of Mazzatun and Cradle of shadows.
  • Blackheart Haven II - Shifty Tom mentions "My new master has waited long enough", intended to be explored in the sequel story, but was never followed up on.
  • Blessed Crucible II - Would have featured the player defending their title as champion from challengers
  • Selene's Web II - Would have featured Warlock Carindon as the antagonist. This story was scrapped and repurposed into Lair of Maarselok, where Selene is an ally (and optional villain) and Carindon is an anti-villain, morally in the wrong for his treatment of Selene.
  • Tempest Island II - Involving the storm spell attack on mainland Malabal Tor.
  • Vaults of Madness II - Would feature Gasteau Chamrond taking up the antagonist mantle from the Mad Architect, falling prey to the power.
  • Volenfell II - Heavily teased to involve finding where The Guardian's Eye went and clearing out the awakened undead. Tharayya says "I have a bad feeling about those undead. I'm going to get some help. Warn the region. Who knows how many of them are in there. [...] Eye or no, unearthing the undead is always an ill omen. And as much as I want to walk away, I don't think this mess is going to clean itself up." However, this was scrapped, and Tharayya returns in the Wrathstone DLC. When talking to her, she says "I never solved the mystery of the Eye or its relationship to the undead that overran Volenfell. No one was willing to head back into that mess, so any clues we left behind are beyond reach. [...] Fortunately, they seemed content to remain within the confines of the ruins, and the authorities content to leave them there. With no leads on where the Eye could have gone, I was back to square one.", meaning Tharayya did indeed give up on going back to Volenfell.

Original plans for various dungeons was initially much different:

Crypt of Hearts
  • QUEST: Echoes of Heartland

  • I have managed to impress the Mad Architect by prevailing in his twisted dungeon and defeating his horrific arena. While he has left me without the chance to get some revenge, he has left a projection that seems to want to talk.
  • I have escaped from the Bone Vaults only to find that this nightmarish dungeon continues on in even more disturbing ways. Somewhere in this warren is the sanctum of the Mad Architect, which may be the key to escaping this place.
  • I have located the Mad Architect's sanctum and can see a portal stone, much like the one I saw when entering. It is possible I can use it to escape, although I will need to make it past the lich first…
  • I have escaped the Crypt of Hearts and Nerien'eth, the Mad Architect who imprisoned me and forced me to play his twisted game. I was, however, denied the opportunity to exact justice against the lich.
  • I have managed to prevail in Nerien'eth's Crypt of Hearts, but the Mad Architect has given me no chance to repay him for his dark crimes, as he was nowhere to be found within the Crypt proper.

QUEST: Treasure Beyond Wonder QUEST: The Mad Architect's Trap QUEST: Rest in Vengeance QUEST: History of the Mad Architect

  • Spirit of Alanwe Malanon
  • Tomb of Alanwe Malanon

I must seek the Faded Spirit deeper in the Crypt of Hearts.\n\nThe spirit spoke to me briefly, then disappeared. Alanwe told me that she and Nerien had built a place called Heartland to guide others to peace and prosperity. When Alanwe died, Nerien went mad, and the dream turned into to a nightmare. "Dearest Alanwe! What we do here bears out the truth of our hearts. My undertaking means nothing without you at my side. This paradise will be a monument to our love. My devotion to you is eternal. Enduringly, —Nerien." "Sweet Nerien! I have thought of a name for the place we will build here. We will create it for all who crave our wisdom. We will call it Heartland, since my heart lies with you forever. Eternally, — Alanwe." "Alanwe, my beloved! Heartland has grown into a place of such beauty and peace. The toil of our students has been rewarded with a bountiful paradise. Yet all this wonder around me pales in comparison to you. Eternally, —Nerien." "Nerien, my husband! You have asked what you would do without me. I tell you this: I will always be by your side. My love for you will endure until the end of the world. Eternally, —Alanwe." Master Vemar, this brave stranger has discovered an insidious plot against our flock! These are the souls of Heartland, those we pledged to teach and guide. The paradise we built is gone… along with Nerien's heart. Only Nerien'eth and his Crypt of Hearts remain. Mostly unscathed, thanks to you. You were right about Nerien. His army of abominations rages through the streets, slaughtering those he once called his citizens. Heartland... is no more. Years ago when I joined Heartland's militia, I swore a duty to protect her citizens. No matter what. I'm staying. It's one of Nerien's necromantic horrors... Narene, look out! I'll hold him off! Janiel, go! I can't just... Narene... a curse on you, Nerien'eth! You can kill me here, but you will never kill what Heartland once was! That… was not what I was expecting.\n\nYou found what became of the mythical Heartland. Once, it was a fabled utopia here.\n\nI almost wish I didn't know about this. Hopefully, Alanwe's spirit will be able to do something. By the Eight! This was probably written to a distant grandfather of mine. \n\nThe stories say Yvaine Perroult perished when the Heartland was destroyed. The place is a crater now.\n\nIt's good to have this piece of our past. Thank you. I'm dead. \n\nI'm not intangible. I'm just a ghost. I know you. <<1>>, right?\n\nDon't ask me how I know. I do this for a living. \n\nI run around, delivering messages to poor damned souls who don't want to be found.\n\nI found you. I have a message. Beware! \n\nLosing his Heart, his Light has made him mad. Nerien has become Nerien'eth and he will doom you all.\n\nBeware what lies ahead - beware his tricks, beware the very ground beneath your feet lest it be a trap! Alanwe means 'daughter of the moon.' But now he sees only darkness.\nWhere once there was love, now obsession. Where once there was joy, hopeless wrath. Where has his heart gone? Nerien and I built Heartland, a city of great beauty, for those who sought our guidance.\n\nWhen I was killed, Nerien turned his intellect to cheating death.\n\nBeware his monsters that lie ahead. You will need all your wits and strength to pass. Nerien and Alanwe were so good to us, in those days. Heartland was a beautiful place, as they promised. Then the dream turned to a nightmare... We all came to Heartland looking for something better. For a long time, we found that. Nerien and Alanwe created a paradise for us. I was a smith, you know. In Heartland they taught me new ways to forge and better my craft. I was happy there. You never saw such a beautiful place as that valley. And how we all lived together, worked together... it was every bit as good as they promised, until the end. Nerien loved her to distraction. Everything he did in Heartland, he did for her. But then when she died, everything changed. That was the beginning of the end. He was a changed man. You should have seen our governors back then, Nerien and Alanwe. So bright, so beautiful. He hung the moon on Alanwe, you know. He called her his Bright One. My wife and I grew such bountiful crops we had more than we knew what to do with. How things grew in that place was magic, I'm telling you. We worked hard in those days, it's true. But we worked willingly, for the good of all. Not like later, when Nerien became so changed. And those under his hand toiled for such a dark purpose... I'd have done anything for Nerien, before he lost Alanwe. He was a good man. But then she died and the things he asked of us… many refused. Then we were punished. I will not speak of it more. I was a tailor in Heartland. I made clothes for so many settlers who came, I scarcely remember their names anymore. I do remember we were happy, though. As happy as anyone gets in this life. Alanwe was Nerien's light and reason. And when she was gone, light and reason went with her. Only darkness and insanity remained. We were all so glad to find that gentle valley. We had no idea what nightmares would come later... Nerien loved her too much. Without her, he transformed into something none of us recognized. Oh, Alanwe was beautiful, I suppose. But what she was was smart. I was a good architect when I came to Heartland, but a better one after her tutelage. We had a good life in Heartland. Almost as good as they promised us, before it all changed. Nerien and Alanwe were so good to us, in those days. Heartland was a beautiful place, as they promised. Then the dream turned to a nightmare... Nerien'eth, the Architect of the Crypt of Hearts, has been using stolen corpses in his necromantic experiments. Delia was glad I solved her mystery… except the answer was worse than anyone could have imagined. The spirit wardens need my help east of the abbey at the Moonlit Maw. I found an old letter from an ancestor of the Perroult family to her son, warning him of dangers in the fabled city of Heartland. There was a relative still living in Hoarfrost Downs. She was grateful to have this missive, even many years late. Bastion of the Heartland It is a symbol. A token that a Kinlord offers during votes in council. Giving it to Ayarynne would indicate that Langdruun will support her policy on the Heartlands. ... bones of the Ayleids have knit themselves into that monstrosity is only further evidence of their impurity.\n\nWe must keep the lower portcullis sealed. The creature stirs when we approach, and I do not.... "Sweet Nerien - I have thought of a name for the place we will build here, that we will create for those who crave our wisdom. We will call it Heartland, since my heart lies with you forever. - Alanwe"\n\nAre there more notes? You find the other half of the note. \n\n"Dearest Alanwe - What we do here bears out the truth of our hearts. This undertaking means nothing without you at my side; this paradise will be a monument to our love. My devotion to you is eternal. - Nerien." "Alanwe, my beloved… Heartland has grown into a place of such beauty and peace, and the toil of our students rewarded with a bountiful paradise. Yet all this wonder around me pales in comparison to you. - Nerien."\n\nPerhaps there are more notes… "Nerien, my husband… you have asked me what you would do without me and I tell you this; I will always be by your side. My love for you will endure the end of the world. - Alanwe."\n\nPerhaps you can find the author of these letters somewhere here… Here Lies Jhanaida the Undefeated, Yokudan Legend, Consort of Seht Here Lies Ansei Mabanyeh, Hero of the Crimson Fields, First Student of Divad the Singer Here lies Hadanah, Maiden of the Spirit Sword, Bane of the Breton Corsairs. Here lies Lihidar of Two Fangs, The Black Snake of Hammerfell. Here lies Nahrama the Burning Blade, Scourge of the Unclean, Champion of Tu'whacca. Here lies Mazira the Unbroken, Slayer of Nords, Sister of the Seven Blades The cart is filled with the fresh remains of Rivenspire's dead. Who is collecting these bodies and why? There is also a name on this cart: RENWEN. Perhaps whoever that is will have some answers. <You find instructions, in a scrawled hand.>\n\nRenwen - Use these remains, as I have taught you. Assemble them and give them new and better life. We will rebuild the dream that was lost when Heartland rose against me! As far as Alanwe's spirit goes... From my time in Wayrest to my time in exile, my scribblings continue. When the family was cast out of the heartland it took quite some time to adjust. The best of everything, the glamorous dresses and expensive foods. It was over a year before I got the hang of making even a simple stew. The Queen desires your support of the occupation of the Heartland. The Queen desires your support for the occupation of the Heartland. A wayfarer told me a tale of fantastic treasure in the Crypt of Hearts. \n\nHe said that those brave enough to explore the remains of the fabled Heartland will be greatly rewarded. I found an old letter on the remains of an undead creature. It's from a mother named Yvaine Perroult to her son, warning him to stay away from a place called "Heartland." Maybe a relative of the Perroult family still lives in Hoarfrost Downs.

This journal tells of a four-person group seeking out treasure here in the Crypt. It mostly retells the group's tawdry internal drama, until the Crypt starts claiming members. It may be worth finding other such journals for more information. The Mages Guild has an interest in the Crypt of Hearts as well. We have reason to believe there are some valuable Aldmeri relics within the Crypt. If you could retrieve them for us, I have the power to make it worth your trouble. The Crypt of Hearts! The dead don't rest in those ruins. The tragedy of forsaken love still lingers there today. Poor bastards want us to put them down! Crypt of Hearts. The dark spirit of Nerien'eth has returned to the ruins. He leads an army of Daedric monsters. Cleansing the Crypt of Oblivion-spawn will be … challenging. <<1>> went to the Crypt of Hearts and didn't check in with me. That rogue is going to get himself turned into a wraith or worse! Based on the descriptions in Arfinwe's journal, there should be three other journals from the party, somewhere in the Crypt of Hearts. Finding them should give me some more insight into the Mad Architect, and possibly help find his weaknesses. The journals I've read have suggested that the Mad Architect sees this whole place as some kind of twisted game. Based on the descriptions of those lost to this place, I might be able to buy my freedom if I can impress the mad lich somehow. I should enter the Crypt of Hearts in order to find any treasure within. The spirit of Alanwe wants me to find her grave near the Crypt of Hearts in Rivenspire and retrieve her Star-Bracelet from it. She asked only that I take it far away from her tomb. If what the Wayfarer said about the Crypt of Hearts is true, I should find riches in the halls at every turn. The Wayfarer lies.\n\nI have explored the Crypt of Hearts to its bleak extent. \n\nIt was not entirely as advertised. I've collected a small stack of love notes from the Crypt of Hearts. Whatever the Mad Architect has become, he was once an idealistic man named Nerien. He loved deeply and was loved in return. I may be able to find more of the lovers' notes scattered around the crypt's halls and chambers. I've collected a small stack of love notes from the Crypt of Hearts. Whatever the Mad Architect has become, he was once an idealistic man named Nerien. He loved deeply and was loved in return. I should investigate crypts under the base of the Wrothgar Mountains. Then I can see what's become of those corpses. I've explored the Crypt of Hearts and freed the spirit of Alanwe Melanon. I should find the gravedigger and tell her what I've learned. Some of our Undaunted brethren say you delved into the Crypt of Hearts—and reported the sounds of supernatural battle. I guess the fools were too cowardly to follow you! Ha! Greetings! If you find treasure in the Crypt of Hearts, feel free to come by afterwards and sell to me! I'll offer a fair price and save you the trouble of hauling it all to the nearest town. Welcome, intrepid adventurer!\n\nWelcome to the wonderful, the magical, the miraculous Crypt of Hearts! I have escaped the Crypt of Hearts and Nerien'eth, the Mad Architect who imprisoned me and forced me to play his twisted game. I was, however, denied the opportunity to exact justice against the lich. I have managed to prevail in Nerien'eth's Crypt of Hearts, but the Mad Architect has given me no chance to repay him for his dark crimes, as he was nowhere to be found within the Crypt proper. I followed the spirit of Alanwe Malanon through the Crypt of Hearts, learning the story of her fate… and the madness of her lover, Nerien. Clearly, love should endure, but not beyond reason. Nerien'eth, the Architect of the Crypt of Hearts, has been using stolen corpses in his necromantic experiments. Delia was glad I solved her mystery… except the answer was worse than anyone could have imagined. Take me southeast towards the Crypt of Hearts. I'll leave Rivenspire and never return.\n\nI've lived an honest life of penance. I'll continue to do my best to serve the people of Rivenspire by living my last days quietly. No trouble. Crypt of Hearts is clear. The Crypt of Hearts is an elaborate trap! I have been imprisoned within as a mad lich taunts me. I have found a journal in the Crypt of Hearts, written by an Altmer named Arfinwe and detailing the adventures of treasure hunters. It describes a group of four people who entered the Crypt, and has some snippets about the Lich. I have been asked to retrieve relics from within the Crypt of Hearts on behalf of the Mages Guild. Specifically, they are looking for a pair of "eyestones", a signet ring from an Aldmeri champion, and a magical lens. They should be in the Crypt. The Bleeding Temple in the Crypt of Hearts is home to a curiously out-of-place statue. The alabaster statue is of a woman, and unlike everything else in the Crypt, is pristine and beautiful. I have encountered a spirit who claims she was Alanwe Malanon, the wife of the Mad Architect of the Crypt of Hearts and one of the founders of the city that existed before the Crypt.

Darkshade Caverns
  • We came with Lady Brerama to see what happened to her brother.\n\nBe careful around here. Something's not right.
  • This is still House Indoril's property, regardless of what's happened here. \n\nState your business with the Lady Brerama, or be on your way.
  • I wish we were able to meet under better circumstances. \n\nI am Nelam Indoril, the father of Brerama and Beltis.\n\nTell me what you've discovered.
  • Taron Hlaalu wants me to look into House Indoril's sudden and suspicious prosperity. I should find a member of the household, possibly at the Darkshade Mine itself.
  • Brerama Indoril wants me to stop her brother Beltis before he shames the Indoril name. He is somewhere inside the Darkshade Mine.
  • I've killed Beltis Indoril. That may not have been the solution his sister wanted, but I had no choice. I should return to the miner's camp and let Brerama know what happened.
  • I located Brerama Indoril at the Darkshade Caverns mine. It seems that there is something indeed amiss with house Indoril - she appears not to be involved, but wants my help.
  • Taron Hlaalu wants me to look into the sudden rise in House Indoril's fortune in Aldsotha. Somehow despite a dried-up kwama egg mine, they are managing to be prosperous - he suspects foul play.
  • <<1>> suspects her family's returned success in the egg mine of <<2>> may be caused by some illegitimate activity perpetrated by her brother, <<3>>. He has prevented Brerama from entering the mines at all, causing her great concern.
  • Brerama Indoril believes that eggs in the Darkshade Mine have been corrupted or contaminated in some way. Regardless of what I'll find inside the caverns, destroying the eggs can only be for the best.
  • In the Darkshade Ruins you found what appears to be a Dwemer mechanical map of some sort.\n\nTaron Hlaalu may have some answers about its origins and us, or can direct you to someone who does.
  • <You search Beltis's body and find a strange Dwemer device melded into his flesh.>\n\n<This could explain his recent erratic behavior. A Dwemer ruin sits nearby. House Indoril will want to know what fate befell their son.>
  • Yes, one would think. But my brother ... you do not know him as well as I. He is not a moral person.\n\nI tried to search the mine, but Beltis prevented me. Something unnatural is going on down there, and my brother is behind it. He must be stopped.
  • <These miners are all afflicted with a Dwemer mechanism similar to that of Beltis Indoril. It appears the Kwama queen is somehow transforming the miners.>
  • This abomination must be destroyed, before its corruption is unleased on all of Deshaan!
  • I called my father down here after you went into the mine. So what happened? Did you find Beltis?
  • What happened? Did you find Beltis?
  • Oh ... Beltis. My poor, misguided brother. He deserved better than that. He was of House Indoril.\n\nNonetheless, you did what had to be done. Beltis was already lost to us. I thank you for the service to our House, <<1>>.
  • What aberration is this? Metal and flesh ... Dwemer machinery!\n\nBeltis must have uncovered the Dwemer ruins below the mine. Son! How could you let this happen?\n\nSuch a disgraceful turn of events for my family. Thank you for ending it.
  • You made it out safely! We were just about to go look for the bodies. Nelam is anxious to speak to you.
  • I took the machinery-riddled head of the Kwama Queen to Nelam Indoril, who confirmed the mine was once Dwemer ruins. They were possibly some sort of research facility. He was relieved to know his son had not acted deliberately.
  • This strange coagulation of machinery was attached to the head and neck of Beltis Indoril.
  • The deed to the Darkshade mine.
  • Darkshade Bloodwaders
Elden Hollow
  • "Bakkhara will give you incendiaries to destroy what bones they gather so far. \n\nShe finds that they sort bones into piles; some for centaur, some for ogre, some for minotaur, and some she cannot identify.\n\nBakkhara will stay here to speed your exit"
  • Word is that Bakkhara found something big going on under the Elden Tree.\n\nThat Khajiit always lucks out!
  • Bakkhara has a good nose for trouble, by which I mean she seems to actively find it all the time. Who would have thought that the Worm Cult had a foothold beneath the Elden Tree?
  • I do not like the Khajiit, but Bakkhara was at least one of us. Why she crept off to Valenwood's Elden Tree, I will never know.
  • Bakkhara, one of our Khajiit guild members, traveled to the Elden Tree in Grahtwood to look for rare alchemy components. Everyone's worried about her.
  • Bakkhara comes to Elden Tree to find rare herbs for alchemy and maybe pinch rare relics from tall-ears in tree. Mages Guild friends say she is crazy to risk it.\n\nThat is why they are still apprentices or journeymen.
Selene's Web

Hrm. Heard you ran into a changeling in Selene's Web! And survived! You might just be worth a damn. I have defeated Selene, an ancient changeling that was in conflict with a group of Guild Mages. Her power is now left to the Warlock Carindon, the group's leader, to study. I won't be judged. Not by you.\n\nThrough this barrier is the first changeling the Mages Guild has encountered in thousands of years. What mage could turn down the chance to study her, no matter the risk? Armor from the fallen changeling, Selene. Changeling's Samite

Armed with the power of a Blessed Bell, you are ready to launch an attack upon Sunhold.\n\nThe Maromer have installed our Varla Lens atop Sunhold's tower. Travel south to the island and take back what is ours! The crux of our problem here is Selene. They say she is an agent of Mephala. She has lured the local Bosmer into her cult and keeps them ensared with magics and lies.\n\nSelene takes a spider's form and will be hard to kill, but must be stopped. I've lost more soldiers and Bosmer scouts to those damned webs.\n\nIf you find anyone trapped, do what you can to free them.\n\nAnd for the Eight's sake, burn those cursed webs down! The blasphemies of Selene and the Thornvenom Tribe are unforgivable. Kill Loiran, Treethane of the Thornvenom! Bring me Loiran's body so that we may perform the proper death rites. Selene's tribe must be stopped! They've slaughtered most of the Wood Orcs here. \n\nI bet they have something worse planned for the rest of us. I'll search for more captives.\n\nAnd you? Kill Selene's champions. Weaken her any way you can! Selene's Web! The spiders, the withered trees, the multi-legged beasts and poison-dripping fangs! You get all the fun assignments. Selene's court has plenty of fur-limbed and scuttling members. Cull them down, show them the blade of your axe, and return here victorious! Collect the body of Treethane Selyin Collect the Body of Treethane Loiran I have the body of Treethane Loiran. Protector Tilmo will want to know of this. I've been asked to reclaim the body of the Thornvenom Tribe treethane, a Bosmer named Loiran. Well done. We can perform the proper rites on Loiran's body so that he can atone in death for his crimes against the Valenwood. Go, there's no time to waste. I'll make my way back to Tilmo's camp. Go on! Reclaim Selene's Bosmer Huts Destroy Shagrath's Eggs Collect the corpses of Selene's Tribe Chieftains Collect the body of Treethane Selyin Thank you for your aid. Speak of a <<1>> and one appears! We think Selene's lair is somewhere to the northeast. Be careful up there. This "Selene" sounds like the ringleader for these Bosmer cowards. Before the day is done, I'll have her killed.\n\nI don't care what Carindon thinks he's researching. The Bosmer will pay for what they did to the honored Patraud. These Bosmer are feral, mindless. This "Selene" could be controlling them. There is a powerful blanket of magic covering everything in this forest.\n\nI'm glad our wits are still our own. I intend them to remain that way, if today is to be my last. Two Mages dead and not a single forest spirit in sight. There is a potent magical energy beyond this barrier of vines. Maybe it's Carindon's fabled spirit, maybe it's this "Selene." \n\nEither way, I'm not returning to the Guild hall empty-handed. I'm not sure about this but Warlock Carindon seems to know what he is doing. Selene's menace has been neutralized. We are free to dissect and study her.\n\nI had thought the day lost, but this is exquisite. By seed and spleen, the Mages Guild is up to something in Selene's Web. Those bastards killed Patraud, for little more than stepping into the clearing. I'll be sure to return the favor to these Bosmer savages. When inspecting all the claws of this plan, this one is not so sure it will work. We'll find out what we need to know. I'd be lying if I said I liked Patraud much. The Apprentice never knew when to shut his mouth, but he didn't deserve to die like that. That Bosmer we … captured mentioned a matriarch named Selene. By the Egg, those Bosmer were vicious. I won't forget Patraud's sacrifice.\n\nLet's hope there's research worth doing in this forest. Told you I'd make it back, didn't I? Not going to let something like a little gutwound stop me. No way. I've no time for outsiders. I suggest you speak with Carindon, our leader. He's not neck-deep in work. You look like the adventuring type. Speak with Warlock Carindon, if you'd like to join the expedition. This area is saturated with magic. I believe we have found the mysterious Selene, however, our way ahead is barred.\n\nThis journey has been quite the burden. The knowledge we will obtain from the soul of this creature will be immensely beneficial.\n\nI can think of five different potions I'd like to attempt from Selene's aura alone. Glorious! You're the only one left to challenge Selene. Selene's Bosmer Hut Warden Tilmo thinks that the spider-creature Selene is somewhere to the northeast of their camp. I should kill her if I can. I have destroyed the spider creature, Selene. I should return to Warden Tilmo and let her know that whatever influence she has exerted on the Thornvenom tribe and the other creatures of this area is over. Several Bosmer scouts are missing. Many of them may be caught in the webs throughout the valley. I should release any I find and burn as many webs as possible. I've freed Bosmer soldiers and burned many webs. I should report back to Tilmo. Scout Mithiel wants revenge against Selene. She wants me to weaken her by killing her three champions. I killed three of Selene's champions. I should see if Mithiel found her way back to Tilmo's camp. Many of the local Bosmer scouts have gone missing while assisting Warden Tilmo's men. Alarwen asked me to assist any I find. Evoker Ahainar-jo has been killed in a second attack by the Bosmer of Selene's Web. I should speak to Warlock Carindon for instructions. Carindon has instructed me to move deeper into the forest to see what I can find while the Guild Mages interrogate a captive Bosmer. I should further investigate Selene's Web. A skilled Khajiiti hunter has attacked me. I have no choice but to defeat him. I've defeated Longclaw, a Khajiiti hunter loyal to the mysterious "Selene." I should speak with Journeyman Mirondil. Journeyman Mirondil and I have agreed to look for the mysterious Selene that both the mages' captive Bosmer and the Khajiit I defeated remarked about. While the Guild Mages attempt to bypass the barrier blocking them from entering Selene's Sanctum, I should try to find another way in. The Guild Mages have been attacked by an unknown assailant. I should return to the vine barrier to help them. Warlock Carindon appears to be hurt. I should speak with him. Carindon has been injured. The task to face Selene has been left to me. To earn an extra reward from Maj al-Ragath, I must destroy the spider-touched lieutenants of Selene's Web. I need to kill Treethane Kerninn, Queen Aklayah, and Mennir Many-Legs. You will not insult my Mistress with your intrusion. Thresher… Magebane… Attack! Lady Selene… beautiful Webspinner. I have failed you… Your bodies will make fitting sacrifices to the one who threads the Needle with the Hair of Wives. Mrow? Death… is life. Impossible! What of Mephala's promise? Are you so surprised? Lies are truth. Welcome to my Web… Do not waste these bodies! They will make a proper sacrifice to Selene! In the ancient heart of Valenwood, evil stirs among the shadows. The mysterious Bosmer sorceress Selene has led her tribe here, away from the ravages of the Camoran Civil War, to raise a new army. Rumors whisper of unnatural magic, and the blasphemous bond Selene has forged with the Spiders lurking in the heart of the forest. Selene's minions are a grave threat — she and her tribe must be stopped! Selene promised <<1>> would hunt tonight. And here you are.\n\nThe Forest Mother was right again. See how she takes care of us, my daughters? Yet this one wonders—what kind of prey walks so willingly into the hunter's lair? You may have noticed Kudda-dar is not sad at his daughter's deaths. Let me show you why. Selene blessed them with her gift—the gift of spirit life. See their hunt begin anew! So nice to see you again, my dear Selene.\n\nYour secrets belong to me, now. Even in death you will help me in so very many ways. my Queen! I've failed you. You made a deal with the Guild. Not with me.\n\nYour soul will make me one of the most powerful mages in the Guild. What do you have to say now? Nothing to you, whorespawn. Your kind will never rule the forest, not as long as Selene is its guardian. What's going on here? You've summoned Daedra into our forest! We're working on it … please, I'm trying to …. You're a monster! Our contract is broken. The Green has spoken. No! Wait! We'll see about that little one. Selene protects! Selene destroys! Selene will rule all! Your Wood Orc friend rampaged through here earlier. She went back out looking for more survivors.\n\nBy killing Selene's champions, you've done more for us than anyone else. Thank you. Selene's soul is mine, now. Today is a historic one for the Guild.\n\nI'll ensure my fallen colleagues receive honorable mentions in the next codex I write. Who are you working for? Why attack us? Mistress Selene forbids me from speaking. Selene will make you pay! Selene's Ritual Overlook You'll want to check your path, friend. Selene's Web is a destination you'll want to avoid. They've gone mad.\n\nMy men think it has something to do with Selene and her webs.\n\nOf course, I'm a fighter, not a sage. I don't really know. Selene? The Bosmer call her a god-child of the Hunt. Before they became brutal and violent, the Thornvenom would speak of her being their patron. Not long ago. They razed the Wood Orc villages in the area and are led by three of Selene's most trusted Champions. Our neighbors in the Thornvenom tribe have turned upon us. A handful of bloodied, frightened Bosmer fled Selene's web describing a massacre. I know not what drove the Thornvenom into madness, nor do I dare enter Selene's Web to find out. Deeper into the forest.\n\nIf this Selene is here, that's where she'll be. He served his purpose. We were attacked as soon as the door was opened. By Bosmer, woodland creatures, Selene's entire army it seems.\n\nWe held out as long as we could, fought like trapped Nords. But she was too powerful. I could not risk telling them the truth. Only a few at the Guild know of Selene's existence. \n\nMy superiors decreed that no mage interfere with her, for she is ancient, and her power is great. But how could I resist such a mythical creature? No clue. It was my Mages Guild informant who referred to the forest as Selene's Web.\n\nI bet you'll find out why—if you go. What will you do with Selene's soul? Why's that forest called Selene's Web? I found this pelt in Selene's Web. Hold on. Who or what is Selene? The captives are imprisoned in spider webs within Selene's Web. The unholy bond the Thornvenom Tribe has forged with the evil spiders of Selene's Web is an affront to the Valenwood, and it must be stopped. The Wild Hunt has taken root in Selene's Web and is corrupting the wildlife in the area. As I entered Selene's Web, I heard an unearthly screeching yowl echoing from the rock walls to the southeast. I should investigate. I freed a Wood Orc scout who had been captured by Selene's followers. They were going to sacrifice her. Now she wants revenge against Selene. The Mages Guild has launched an expedition into Selene's Web to seek out and study an ancient forest spirit rumored to live here. Maj al-Ragath of the Undaunted has challenged me to explore Selene's Web, a spider-haunted grove in Reaper's March. Volenfell

The excavators and I were trying to find a way to get to the lower level when we found damage to the lift in the center of town. We couldn't tinker much before we were attacked! I got back, but my three assistants didn't return. Help me find them! We may be the first to see the lower ruins in centuries. I wish I could go with you. If you could, take these memory stones and examine any machinery you find down there. I'll be able to see it as if I were there - I'd be greatly appreciative. Legends tell of the Pearl of Zeht, an artifact that could bring us endless water. I am led to believe that such tales are true, and that the Pearl can be found within the ruins of Volenfell. Please, retrieve it, and be thanked by Fahara'jad himself. Perhaps you can help me. I feel like I am close to understanding these constructs, but there are still pieces I am missing. This item here is an organon from a centurion. Bring me others like it from inside Volenfell and I will make it worthwhile. A striking artifact sits on the pedestal. It appears to be an incomplete map of Tamriel, and various trace lines across the face of it seem to indicate direction to somewhere. You should bring this to someone more knowledgeable about Dwemer relics. "I miss your presence, Morga. This dungeon is hot, and I grow lonely with just ogrim for company.\n\n"How is your stay in Volenfell? I hope you find what you were looking for and return here soon.\n\n"Write me back." Volenfell! These are amazing - I can't wait to study them. You've saved this excavation, you know. I don't know what we would have done without you. Here, we were sent with some of the best equipment, perhaps you can make good use of it. This… this can be nothing but the Pearl of Zeht. My lord Fahara'jad will want to speak with you in thanks. You have done an unparalleled service today, and mere words cannot thank you enough. These are excellent! Some are damaged, but that is to be expected. I will be able to learn much from this batch. If you are headed back into the ruins, do let me know - I can always use more of these. Pearl of Zeht Chamber QUEST: Riddles of the Dwemer QUEST: The Resplendent Pearl of Zeht

There was a plethora of leads here. Nothing closer to hinting at the Guardian Eye's true nature, but we can figure that out once we find it.\n\nHowever, all our clues point to Volenfell, the famed Dwemer ruins, as the Eye's final resting place—and Volenfell's location has been lost for generations. The only thing experts can tell, myself included, is that Volenfell is hidden somewhere under the sands of the Alik'r Desert.\n\nShould be no problem for me and my team to cover its vastness and find those ruins.\n\nRight.\n\nThat's sarcasm, in case posterity bothers with this journal.

The Mages Guild in Volenfell has run into trouble. The excavators were attacked while in the ruins and split up while looking to repair the central elevator. With the repairs to the main elevator, the way into Lower Volenfell is accessible for the first time in centuries, if not longer. The excavation crew is excited about the opportunity, despite their hardships thus far. I have been asked to retrieve the fabled Resplendent Pearl of Zeht from within Volenfell. The Pearl is an artifact from which pours an endless supply of clean water, and should Fahara'jad control it, his leadership would go unopposed. Artificer J'neth wants me to bring him some organum from inside Volenfell, so that he can continue his work on recreating a Dwemer centurion. The various constructs within Volenfell should contain these organum. I have found an artifact in Volenfell that appears to be a fragment of a map. Unfortunately, a massive construct is blocking the way forward. If it can be defeated, Tahra may be able to reactivate the lift. I've filled Tahra's memory stone by examining machinery within Volenfell. I should return to her with the stone. I have retrieved the Resplendent Pearl of Zeht and should return to Arzedram. I have delivered the gyroscopes to Artificer J'neth. I should collect my reward from him. Tahra in Volenfell has asked me to help in finding her lost team of excavators. Three of them should be in the upper level of Volenfell, and rescuing them may be the key to reaching the depths of the ruin. Tahra has requested that I take her memory stone into the lower ruins of Volenfell and examine machinery within. I have found the missing excavators, but it seems their repairs have activated a Dwemer machine, the Guardian of Volenfell. To go any deeper, I'll need to defeat the Guardian. In order to get underneath Upper Volenfell, I will need to find the excavators so power can be restored to the central lift. I have found a schematic library within Volenfell. There is surely something of value in this place, and I should find it. I should complete my conversation with Mogra. I have a letter addressed to a woman named Mogra. We are a people of strong and noble heritage. \n\nTo earn our respect, you must succeed at a trial of combat, of kingship, or of bloodlines. Choose now. What makes you worthy of such a relic? Any common thief could make it this far.\n\nOnly someone truly worthy may take the Cartulary from its resting place. The Ra Gada brought fear to Volenfell's shores. Breton, Orc, Nord, and Elf alike trembled at our battlecries and the prowess of our sword saints.\n\nTo prove yourself worthy, you must best this challenge. Do you, now? You are either confident or arrogant. It matters little. Great kings are often both.\n\nTell me, wanderer. How would you use the secrets of the Cartulary? You speak truth. Yokudan blood flows through your veins. I can sense it. \n\nThe Cartulary is yours, by right of blood. Use it as you will, but know that to abuse its secrets will bring you and your children great dishonor and misfortune. This trial is not for you. You are not a descendant of the Ra Gada. A true king knows that strength is often found in humility. We foster our people because they, in turn, make us stronger. A king is nothing if he is not beloved.\n\nYour answer satisfies me. Was it this Paldeen who overcame the dangers? Who battled the guardians? Who risked life and limb to stand before me? No.\n\nYou are the focus of these trials, not Paldeen. You're a plunderer, then! Many of the Ra Gada kings were corsairs. We raided the coastal cities and merchant vessels of the Bretons. We were both wealthy and feared because of our ferocity.\n\nYour answer satisfies me. I'm just not sure. The Volenfell texts never hinted the Orbit could react like that.\n\nPerhaps when I can move again we'll survey the effects of that explosion. What is your excavation looking for in Volenfell? What should I look for in the upper city? Slay the Guardians of Volenfell The excavation at Volenfell seems to be halted. If I want to gain access to the lower city, I will need to assist. The Dwemer city of Volenfell is buried deep beneath the sands of the desert. Wayrest Sewers
  • Pellingare to Prison
  • The Pellingare Smugglers
  • Reports are of many dangerous beasts under Wayrest. I should look there and kill whatever creatures I find.
  • I've killed many of the creatures threatening to take over the Wayrest sewers. I should return to Constable Lienne and let her know the population's been thinned.
  • I promised <<1>> I would exact revenge on the Pellingare gang. I should kill any smugglers I encounter in the Wayrest sewers.

I've killed most of the Pellingare smuggling gang. I should return to the entrance of the sewers and speak with <<1>>. The Fervor is fading! Menevia is saved!

  • This sewer was a dangerous place even before the Fervor. Crazy you yourself must be, for wandering into the lair of the Pellingare gang.
  • With the chaos of the Fervor, the Wayrest sewers have been overrun by dangerous beasts. I killed a number of these at the request of Contable Lienne.

While wandering through Stormhaven, I saw bandits swarming the Wayrest Sewers. I'm not talking a few, either. Something big is about to happen.\n\nEither that … or I just saw one bandit. Many, many times.

  • I was asked by an imprisoned man to find evidence of wrongdoing by the Pellingare family so he can clear his name and search for his missing daughter.\n\nHe thinks I might be able to find something in the Wayrest Sewers for some reason.
  • In the sewers beneath Wayrest, I met a man named <<1>> who was ruined by a group of smugglers and now seeks bloody revenge. The Pellingare gang, as he names them, use the sewers as the headquarters for their smuggling operations.
  • A group of smugglers known as the Pellingare gang is operating out of Wayrest sewers. The smugglers act with near impunity in the city. A corrupt investigator named Garron is helping the gang cover up their crimes by framing innocent citizens.
  • I think the Pellingare family has her. When I looked into missing shipments, they had me arrested! \n\nI need evidence. Waybills, letters, stolen goods, anything to prove my innocence so I can get free and look for her! Start in the sewers.
  • Yes - the Pellingare gang! Thieves and cutthroats, every one. Their headquarters are through the tunnel below.\n\nI came here with thoughts of red revenge, but now that I'm here… I'm not sure I can go down this road. I don't want to become like them.
  • It is! <<1>> is as crooked as they come. He's helping the Pellingare gang hide their crimes from the rest of the city guard.\n\nThat's why I'm in these stocks. Garron framed me for one of the gang's crimes. Then he had me arrested.
  • Me? I didn't know what else to do …. My husband was falsely imprisoned, arrested by a corrupt investigator named <<1>> who works for the Pellingare gang.\n\nI thought I might find a way to free him down here … but I can't even find the smugglers!
  • Garron's a traitor to the city and the crown. You can give that criminal the justice he deserves!\n\nIt won't end with him, though. The smugglers run their operation out of the city sewers. You should go down there and put an end to this corruption.
  • You would do that? For a total stranger?\n\nOh, Divines bless you, yes! Please, find that awful, lying investigator and put an end to his corruption. Everyone's so afraid of the Pellingare gang. It's past time they were dealt with.
  • Gah! Don't just stand there gawking. <<1>> is right over there. He works for the Pellingare! If he sees you, he'll kill you.

Thank you. I can't thank you enough.

  • You must believe me. I've done nothing wrong.\n\nThe investigator who arrested me is the real criminal. He's working for the Pellingare gang!

  • My father? What has he got to do with anything? This doesn't involve him - it can't!
  • Imprisoned?! \n\nThat was never my intent. I thought only to improve my lot in life… I won't let my poor father take the burden of my guilt.\n\nAnelle will seek revenge for my betrayal… please stop her!
  • I should descend into the sewers and try and find the evidence Chaupelle insists is there. Waybills, incriminating letters or even stolen goods themselves will help prove his innocence.
  • It seems that Evan Chapelle's daughter has become involved with the Pellingare's crimes. I should find her and tell her of her father's imprisonment.
  • Chaupelle's daughter fears retribution from the bandit leader, Anelle Pellingare. I should kill her to prevent her coming after the Chaupelle family.
  • I was able to kill the bandit leader, Anelle Pellingare. I should let the Chaupelles know that they are safe from retribution.
  • I promised <<1>> I would exact revenge on the Pellingare gang. I should kill any smugglers I encounter in the Wayrest sewers.
  • I've killed most of the Pellingare smuggling gang. I should return to the entrance of the sewers and speak with <<1>>.
  • I must find and confront <<1>>, a corrupt investigator.
  • <<1>> is dead, but there's another investigator being held prisoner in the sewers. I should talk to <<2>> and offer my help.
  • <<1>> asked me to search the sewers for a hidden exit while she returns to Wayrest to summon reinforcements.
  • I've discovered the hidden route used by the Pellingare smugglers to exit the sewers. I should report my discovery to <<1>>, who will be waiting at the sewers' entrance.
  • I must find and confront <<1>>, a corrupt investigator.
  • I've been attacked by Wayrest noble Varaine Pellingare. I should defeat him before he does the same to me.
  • You've toppled the terrible Pellingare gang!
  • Helene sent me to find you… are you all right? By the Eight, you've killed Anelle Pellingare!
  • Oh, husband. What have you gotten yourself into?
  • Thanks to our friend here, we've got the information we need to move on the Pellingare gang. Their operation is about to go belly-up.
  • You must believe me. I've done nothing wrong!\n\nThe investigator who arrested me is the real criminal. He's working for the Pellingare gang!
  • You're in danger! If the Pellingare smugglers find you here, they'll kill you for sure.
  • You're here! My savior returns. Thank you for all your help.\n\n<<1>> told me you freed her from the Pellingare gang. She released me before heading back into the sewers. Praise the divines! I can finally return to my life.
  • Thank you for the kindness you showed my husband. It's a rare soul who would risk their own life to save another's.

  • That swine sold me goods that were stolen by the Pellingare gang, then blamed me for the theft! He even brought false witnesses in to make the claims against me. I tell you, his lawlessness knows no end!

That swine sold my husband Evan goods that were stolen by the Pellingare gang. The next day he returned to our store and blamed Evan for the theft! <<1>> even brought false witnesses in to make the claims against him. Oh, my poor man. What injustice! They run the most ruthless smuggling ring this side of the Bjoulsae. Inside Wayrest, they're nearly untouchable.\n\nI've been investigating their crimes, but someone kept covering up their tracks. I searched the sewers and found out who - <<1>>! She's the head of the Pellingare smugglers. She runs the whole operation with the help of her brother, <<1>>.\n\nI'm positive she's holed up somewhere in these sewers. Be careful if you go after her, though - she didn't rise this far on wits alone.

  • This locked gate blocks a waterway that appears to lead out of the sewers. It must be the hidden exit used by the Pellingare smugglers.\n\nI should find <<1>> and tell her what I found.
  • How do you know <<1>> is corrupt?
  • Tell me about the Pellingare gang.
  • I saw the bounty poster for <<1>>. What can you tell me about her?
  • I found a wanted poster for the notorious criminal <<1>>, leader of the Pellingare smugglers, who is wanted for several crimes.
