Fonus Rathryon, a Dark Elf pilgrim found along the road west of Maar Gan, is in dire need of an escort to Koal Cave to continue his pilgrimage.

He wears a set of common clothes, consisting of a shirt, trousers and a pair of shoes. He carries up to 170 pieces of gold with him, 150 of which he gives to you as a reward if you safely bring him to Koal Cave within the two-day deadline.

In addition to his natural resistance to fire and the sanctuary provided by his ancestors, Fonus knows the spells Mother's Kiss, Veloth's Gift, Veloth's Benison, Strong Heal Companion and Balyna's Perfect Balm. Fonus offers no services.

You may find Fonus standing at the side of the road between Ald'ruhn and Maar Gan. He is on a pilgrimage to the shrine in Koal Cave and politely asks you to escort him there in time for him to meet his fellow faithfuls:

  • "Pardon me, can you help a poor pilgrim?"
  • help a poor pilgrim
    • "I've been trying to get to Ruddy Man, but I've lost my way. If you would be so kind as to help, I can pay you 150 septims upon our arrival. I need to get there rather quickly, though. I'm on a pilgrimage, and there are others I must meet there. I must be at Ruddy Man, in Koal Cave, within two days. Can you help?"
    • I can escort you to Koal Cave.
      • "Excellent! Let us be on our way then. It's on the western shore, so we must hurry."
    • I'm sorry. I cannot help you.
      • "No? Well, maybe I'll find someone else who'll be able to help me out." Goodbye

If you decided not to help him and speak with him about the topic again, he will try to persuade you to change your mind:

  • "I must get to Koal Cave soon."
  • help a poor pilgrim
    • "I still need to get to Koal Cave. Are you sure you won't help me?"
    • I can escort you to Koal Cave.
      • "Excellent! Let us be on our way then. It's on the western shore, so we must hurry."
    • I'm sorry. I cannot help you.
      • "No? Well, maybe I'll find someone else who'll be able to help me out." Goodbye

If you decided to help him out, he will follow you until you either successfully bring him to his desired destination or until the time limit runs out. You can ask him a few questions about his destination and the help which he requires:

  • "I must get to Koal Cave soon."
  • help a poor pilgrim
    • "Yes, I need to get there as soon as possible."
  • Koal Cave
    • "The Koal Cave is south of Gnisis. If we travel west and a bit south, we can arrive there. If you have a map, I can mark the location for you."

While acting as your follower, Fonus will remind you periodically of the time that remains for him to reach the cave in time to meet up with his fellow pilgrims. The first warning, which takes place after half a day has passed, is a relatively neutral yet clear one:

  • "As I've told you, I need to be in Koal Cave in the next day and a half. Let's be on our way."

Another half a day later, Fonus starts to grow noticeably more anxious:

  • "It's already been a day that I've been traveling with you, and I'll need to be there within another day. Can we get moving?"

After you have wasted one and a half days of the mer's time, Fonus starts to wonder if you even know how to reach the cave:

  • "Are you sure you know the way to Koal Cave? I need to be there in the next half day."

If you manage to get the pilgrim to his destination on time, he will thank you upon arriving at the entrance to Koal Cave and, true to his word, pay you for your efforts:

  • [150 Gold has been added to your inventory.] "Thank you for your help, %PCName. As promised, here is your payment." Goodbye

If you speak to him again afterwards, he will once again express his gratitude for your valuable assistance:

  • "It is good to finally be at my destination."
  • help a poor pilgrim
    • "Thank you for your help."
  • Koal Cave
    • "We are here. Thank you for your help."

If you do not reach the cave within the allotted two-day deadline, however, all that Fonus has left for you are some annoyed and disappointed parting words before he quits being your follower:

  • "Clearly, you don't know where you're going. You've wasted two days of my time, and now I won't make it to Koal Cave on time. Thanks for nothing." Goodbye
