Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
North of Ouze where two paths merge stands a Wood Elf who appears to be looking for someone or something. When you ask her what has happened she tells you that another spinner, Spinner Indinael, was trying to prevent the Worm Cult from defiling a burial site but was taken captive. She says Indinael is now near the center of Ouze at one of the altars in the water and beggs you to save her.
Find Spinner Indinael[edit]
Head south on the eastern path towards Ouze. You will encounter Skeletal Warriors and Worm Cult members on your way. When you get to the swamp turn east and you'll see a woman laying on an altar surrounded by tall stones. She seems surprised that someone sent you to help. Tell her she is safe now, and she responds:
- "Safe? None of use are safe. All the threads are breaking apart. The Worm Cult awakens the Oathbreakers! The necromancers enslave the spirits of Ouze!"
First, ask her about the necromancers. She tells you the Bosmer that are buried here rejected the Green Pact, defying Y'ffre's will and thus earned the title Oathbreakers. The pact is an agreement between the Wood Elves and Y'ffre, the most recognizable spirit that helped create the physical world during the Dawn Era. These Bosmer shapeshifters were trapped by Y'ffre and are eternally protected.
Burn the Spriggans[edit]
Now the Worm Cult wants to enslave the Bosmer and make them kill spriggans for the heartwood needed in their necromantic rituals. Indinael wants you to burn all the spriggan corpses to keep the cult from getting the heartwood. There are three locations that you will need to burn: the northwestern, southern, and central.
After you have burned the three spriggan corpses, return to the altar. While you were gone, Spinner Indinael died, but her spirit says her death is just the beginning of a new, unhappy story. She says she is trying to resist the pulse of the Worm Cult. You tell her you are sorry you weren't able to save her, but that you were able to burn all the spriggans you could find. She is pleased that you were able to thwart the necromancer's plans.
Investigate the Sack[edit]
Spinner Indinael tells you there is one other way the necromancers can get what they want, and she needs your help to stop them. Since they can't create their army of shapeshifters, they will try to create one powerful creature. She has hidden something in a sack nearby that holds what the necromancers need to do this, and wants you to get it before they can.
Spinner Indinael is a storyteller, and she can change the narrative of a story by manipulating the story threads. She has hidden the thread of the story's existence behind a tangle of threads in the larger story of Ouze. The Worm Cult has not realized this and hasn't unraveled this knot.
The sack is behind Indinael next to one of the tall stones. Open the sack and retrieve a totem then return to Indinael. She says you must prepare to use the totem from the sack in order to stop the Worm Cult from mastering the Oathbreakers. A shapeshifter named Guardian Celonron was one of the strongest of the Breton's that refused the Green Pact. You will need to battle and defeat him to disperse his excess energy. The totem will then absorb the wisps that he will release during the fight.
Guardian Celonron can be found southwest of the altar along the path that leads to Valeguard. As you approach he accuses you of violating the ancient grounds. When you reach him, he is in the form of a lion. After you defeat him three orbs will be floating, just walk up to them and the totem will absorb them. Then Celonron's image will be floating behind the altar, so you can talk to him:
- "Who do you think you are, taking my energy?
You think defeating me once will be enough to enslave my spirit? I'll see your bones sink into the tar first!" - Are you the guardian of Ouze?
- "Of course I am! My lion form suffices to dispatch tresspassers. Well, usually."
He will ask who you are and you tell him you are a friend and that Spinner Indinael gave you a totem. When you show him the totem he is upset as he realizes she would never give it up if she were alive. You tell him that you don't know what you are supposed to do with it. He resists helping you since you used it to drain most of his spiritual essence. When you try to intimidate him he just scoffs and says you need to speak with Indinael, and to hurry because something is wrong.
Search for Spinner Indinael[edit]
When you return to the stone altar there is no sign of Spinner Indinael. Someone has taken her body from the altar, and you need to find them. There are three clues you need to find to determine where Spinner Indinael's body was taken, but you can only find one at one time.
- a broken bottle filled with fresh blood
- a dilapdated cart filled with putrid corpses
- a map with bloodstains and a mark locating a cave entrance
Open your zone map and you'll see a marked location southeast of Ouze. This is the entrance to the cave marked on the map you just found. When you reach the cave, you'll find Spinner Endrith and Spinner Gwilon waiting for you. Speak to Spinner Endrith, who is quite upset. She's convinced that the stories of a terrible undead being are connected to Spinner Indinael, claiming the Worm Cult has turned her into a servant to command the Worm Cult's legions.
She suddenly realizes that Spinner Indinael obviously knew her fate because she gave you the Totem of Y'rre. You are to go inside the cave and use the totem to stop Spinner Indinael.
Entering the cave you find Guardian Celonron in lion form ready to help you. Work your way through the cave, fighting Skeletons as you go. Go straight through the first large cavern, the cave then curves to the left where you will find Spinner Indinael transformed into the undead being Spinner Endrith described.
Use the Totem of Y'ffre on Indinael. When she is finally dead, her spirit form appears and she exclaims:
- "I'm … free! We must leave, quickly!"
Turn to the right and exit the cave. You will see Spinner Indinael's spirit form straight ahead of the cave exit. Go speak to her.
Spinner Indinael's spirit form tells you that you were successful in saving the Oathbreakers, and perhaps all of Valenwood. Suspecting she knew her fate, ask her if she knew you would have to kill her:
- "The threads pulled in every direction. They threatened to snap. My death was the least of evils possible.
With your help, I challenged the story. And with your strength, I was able to change my fate"
She tells you that you must return the totem to Spinner Gwilon. Turn and speak to him. He explains that it will be his duty to take over for Spinner Indinae as protector of the spirits in their eternal rest.
Notes[edit]
- The spriggan corpse piles won't exist in the area before starting the quest or reaching the related objective.
- The spectral lion that follows you in the cave if you have passed the Intimidation check with Guardian Celonron lacks a nameplate.
- There is a lore page, The Excavation of Ouze, on a bench as you enter the large cavern of the cave.
- While displayed as a hint needed to progress the objective, it is not required to use the totem during the fight with the lich.
Bugs[edit]
- During dialogue with Indinael while she is laying on the central altar, the dialogue option to confirm that you will look for the heartwood is marked in red despite not being a split-decision. ?
