Temple of the Ancestor Moths

Temple of the Ancestor Moths is a settlement and chapel north of Cheydinhal (quest-related).

This settlement in the Jerall Mountains is the home of the Moth Priests, the only people allowed to study the Elder Scrolls. As reading the scrolls progressively causes loss of sight, the blind priests live a life of relative leisure tending the ancestor moths, harvesting their silk and spinning it into bolts of cloth. Three monks maintain the outside area of the settlement, while the priests and prelates live in darkness in the secret catacombs. You will come here on behalf of the Thieves Guild during the related quest.

The settlement consists of three buildings (the monk's quarters, the chapel, and the crypt serving as the entrance to the catacombs) and a small cemetery.

Monk's Quarters[edit]

The quarters comprise a single room where the three monks serving the priests reside. The room features plenty of cloth and yarn, as well as a green brocade doublet and a green silk garment on the table to the west of the door. In the northwestern corner, a set of shelves holds a pumpkin, a watermelon, and a copy of Pension of the Ancestor Moth. A piece of boar meat and three potatoes are on the nearby table, while another pumpkin sits on the floor next to the lit fireplace. The humble dining table in the southwestern corner only holds three pieces of food: an apple, a bread loaf, and a cheese wheel. A nearby table holds copies of Ten Commands: Nine Divines and Trials of St. Alessia. The northeastern section of the room features two double beds and another lit fireplace. The room contains only three containers: a chest, a crate, and a set of drawers, all non-respawning and containing clutter. While the building is level-locked at all times, entering is not considered trespassing, the two beds are free to use, and all of the items can be taken without penalty.

Temple of the Ancestor Moths[edit]

The small unremarkable chapel is used by the three monks daily. Three statues watch over the four benches, while the active altar is surrounded by lit candles. Behind the altar is a set of shelves holding a copy of Pension of the Ancestor Moth. Near the door is a ladder leading to the roof of the chapel. During the related quest, it is not possible to speak to the monks while they are praying. As with the monk's quarters, while the building is level-locked at all times, entering is not considered trespassing, and all of the items (i.e., the book) can be taken without penalty.

Ancestor Moth Crypt[edit]

The small crypt serves as the entrance to the secret catacombs where the blind priests and prelates reside. It is visited by Brother Holger daily. The crypt contains very little of interest, with the only usable objects being a roll of cloth and a barrel containing torches. The door to the catacombs to the northeast is level-locked. The building is hard-locked at all times, and entering is considered trespassing, but all of the items can be taken without penalty.
