Discussion moved from Template talk:SRDwemer

This template is the first step in an attempt to update Dwemer Inquiries with Dwarven text as it appears in the game as well as any other places that may need Dwarven text. This is an older method of translation for this wiki, but I decided to use it as there is a gap in this area that could do with getting filled. I plan to do plenty of testing with this template before implementation, but even so, if anyone knows more about the performance side of this technique (I know it needs to be used as a substitution, but I'm not sure about performance even then) and could help answer questions on that end (Mainly how performance friendly is this technique?) I would appreciate all the help I could get. Also, if anyone is familiar with creating .ttf fonts such as the ones used by Template:DragonFont and Template:DaedricFont and could teach me how or do it themselves I would love to learn how to transition this to that format as well.Jack of Wabba (talk) 17:21, 4 December 2019 (GMT)

Not currently working, trying to figure out more off-site so as not to bombard recent changes with different iterations. Would love help from anyone who can.Jack of Wabba (talk) 18:07, 4 December 2019 (GMT)
It's working now. Took me a while to remember why it wouldn't. The problem is that lower-case letters in the file names end up getting replaced right along with the text you passed to the template. I'll add a note to the templates themselves, just in case we have to create more templates like this in the future. As far as performance goes, the main issue is that every call to the template does a full string replace 27 times (once per letter, plus the figure space...more for the Daedric template), so while it doesn't really impact the servers notably for one-off cases, it's definitely not something we want happening on a lot of pages. Unfortunately, I can't help you with the .ttf conversion. I'm pretty sure that's something that's always been done by people off-wiki in the past. About the only thing we've ever had to do was to convert it from one font format to another. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:37, 4 December 2019 (GMT)
I have a (mostly) working .ttf font now, it needs some adjustment as its cutting certain characters (S for example) - so i'm going to tweak it until it works properly and then i'll look at the conversion into the other font-formats for compatibility before passing it along for installation. Thank you both for all that! Be sure to let me know once the new version is up and working. Jack of Wabba (talk) 21:49, 4 December 2019 (GMT)
The font files are now available for download. I am unsure on the wiki-side installation other than it appears to rely on an extension, the .css code looks easy enough to implement. On that same subject, I am unsure exactly what fix we are doing to the .eot version for IE so i've not included a version specifically for that. Kiz(email - talk) 21:55, 4 December 2019 (GMT)
And, thanks to Kiz's magic with the font conversion, we now also have the {{DwemerFont}} template: abc. Let me know if you want to keep this one or if it should be deleted. Robin Hood  (talk) 05:02, 5 December 2019 (GMT)
Happy to have this version become obsolete and deleted accordingly. The new method is working great. Big thanks Kiz for putting that togetherJack of Wabba (talk) 03:46, 6 December 2019 (GMT)
